View Full Version : How To: Isolate Exhaust from frame cutouts?

I like how AME frames have nice exhaust pass-throughs for 3" exhaust tubing.

I was wondering how you guys have mounted your exhaust to prevent rubbing and vibrational noise to the frame when using these cutouts. I'm assuming you could do this by rigidly mounting the exhaust to the frame just behind the cut-out or using a high-temp elastomer as a damper.

I have an art morrison frame, but made my own cutouts, they were not offering it when I bought mine, lil behind :)

I drilled (I think the size is correct, it was 12 years ago) 3.5" holes and welded in some 3/16" wall pipe. Then used some silicon sheet in between the pipe and my 3" exhaust tubes. It was a tight fit. And to be honest, I dont know if it helped with sound. My car is too noisy. But the thing with car noise is you have to tackle every point of noise and whittle it down. It will keep the metal on metal noise down. And the silicon sheet will hold up to the heat. JR

A/M frame here as well. We have done many 'special' modifications to my Max-G frame to get it the way we need it. One was to make room for bigger exhausts. 3" simply doesnt cut it on a big inch boosted motor. So we modded the cutouts in the front to take a 4" EQ round oval pipe header to muffler, and the rears to take a 3.5" EQ round oval. Once the tailpipe curves up we convert to 3.5" round. My motor is mounted on a front and rear plate, so no real movement. The custom tube headers have the oval collector as well.

@SDMAN, great idea about the use of motor plates, I also like your take on running your collectors to an oval cross-section. What kind of engine will you be running, turbos or supercharger?

Another suggestion here - Chris @ JCG makes these awesome billet exhaust hangers. I was thinking of using them above the cutouts for proper exhaust tube placement. Hopefully they'll secure the exhaust well enough to prevent any rattling?

Car is very low, so nothing allowed to hang below the frame. Engine is an aftermarket block Pontiac, 555ci with a Procharger.

I just had my exhaust run through the cut-outs of my AM frame, I can take some pictures of how it was done this week.

heres how i did mine. called up the Roadster Shop and bought some of the poly isolators. im using flex mounts right after the headers so i wont have any issues with a somewhat solid mounting.

Thanks. I appreciate it. Dont get here very often. Not really building a major G-machine. Mostly an A-machine (A=acceleration) with good brakes that will turn.

I dont think I have any with the exhaust, Ill look in my photobucket. If there arent any Ill make some time to crawl under the car and take some shots.

My car wont EVEN be as nice as the stuff the other guys posted. Im not a builder, this is my first car work. So I tend to go on what I can afford and my limited skill set.

But I did know what I wanted. Mufflers stuffed up high and tight. Three inch mufflers and pipes and you cant see them unless you get yer knees on the ground. They are high and tight and NO heat transfer to the floor. And even though the pipes are in tight contact with the frame the silicon sheet keeps anything from making any metal to metal noise, I think LOL

Everything else is so loud. The car is in all metal, no door or window seals, no interior. Its a work in progress.

Lemme see if I have any pics. Prolly not much to see anyway, more than I described. And it wont be pretty, be forewarned :) JR

Ok, I dont have any pics with the pipes going through the holes that I could find. This pic shows the holes and the exhaust dumping out right before them, small turn downs. Im gonna have to raise the car to get under it for some newer pics.
