View Full Version : Roadster Shop's 70 Chevelle - Back in Black

Roadster Shop

Well, we have decided to send our 70 Chevelle through Barrett-Jackson to find its new owner and let some one else have as much fun with it as we have had. While it is definitely sad to see this one go, we have to make room for the next build for the 2011 season featuring our new Fast Track Chassis and Suspension system. It looks like we have a prime time spot Saturday night so bid early and bid often! ;-)

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/0473_CLN08.jpg

We decided to freshen everything up on the car including the color. While the bright green was definitely recognizable and did it's job, it simply was not for everyone. After much debate, we have decided on a color that is more mainstream and will appeal to a wider audience.

Here is the revised rendering. There will be a few minor changes from the rendering, but this should give you the idea. (The wheels will most likely have brushed hoops w/o pinstriping and we are trying to decide on painting the bumpers matte or gloss to match the body.)

I never did like the green, but it did stand out as a marketing tool. that black set-up looks awesome!

So much better!

Now forget the red/orange stripping - just let it be a Chevelle - black and nasty to the max... :D

I like the mat on the bumpers - and maybe a couple other places - hood etc but without the pin stripping.

BJ will be "interesting" this year.... we'll all get a tell on where prices are headed... flat - up - or down. My hope is up a bit!

Forgot to finish my "thoughts"....

It's easy for someone to ADD stripping - or colors/mats etc.... but at an auction --- you want to appeal to the widest possible audience you can. Sometimes that means less is more.

Very cool car, probably one of the best pro touring '70 Chevelles around.

The dash and interior is really well done. :hail:

I agree with Greg, and keep the red pinstripes off, especially on the wheels. I'd like inner fenders too.

Good luck.

Personally I love the red pinstripe with the black, Phil.

Maybe it's just the lack of some details in the rendering but I detect an absence of door handles? Are you shaving them?

The matte on the hood and bumpers is a nice touch too. You guys do some incredible work in that shop. I will have to drive the Camaro up there in the spring since you guys are so close to me.

Do you think that the repaint will hurt the price of the car? The only reason I say that is because the buyers will know it is not the original paint and it was a reshoot over another paint job. Unless you did it differently than I am thinking.

I don't think anything the Roadster Shop does would hurt the price of a car.

I very much like the black.......it's the best color option......that's why my cars are black, my bike is black, my guitar is black.....:cheering:

Anyway, they only way I can the respray hurting the value is because the car was a bit iconic in the green.....love it or hate it the green stood out. If your a potential buyer thinking "I want that car I saw in the Magazines!" then you may be a bit disappointed. However if your the guy thinking man I want that car but that color.....ughhh......well than it's perfect.

I think the stripes are understated enough to be attractive with out being obnoxious.

Well, we did not do the Maco scuff-and-shoot approach on this car, so I don't think the color change will have any negative effect on the price. We are getting close to 400 hours in the paint job to make sure that it is absolutely perfect.

I don't think anything the Roadster Shop does would hurt the price of a car.

Thanks man! We were a little concerned about losing the iconic value of the car, but it was such a love it or hate it color that we felt leaving it green might hurt the sale of the car more than it would help.

Door handles are staying. While a cleen black Chevelle does look good, this just is not that car. If it had stock bumpers/trim, stockish interior... I would definitely say straight black would be the way to go. With everything done to the car, I think a straight black paint job would look like we left something out. It definitely needs the matte finnishes and red accents.

I saw this thing on the road before the Goodguys show at Texas Motor Speedway, definitely stood out in the green.

It would be pretty cool to include a bit of that color somewhere on it as an homage, maybe instead of the red for the pinstripes or something in the interior. Looks like you could swim in that new black, though, good stuff.

I have lusted this car since I first saw it at Motorstate in 2009. The only things I would change are to give it inner fenders and to fab up a tube for the intake so the filter wasn't hanging off the throttle body.

Thanks guys! Were are really happy with the way the car turned out. Hopefully a few guys in Scottsdale will feel the same way. It is definitely a gamble and we've definitely lost some sleep over the decision. But, it has a prime spot Saturday night and I think the new look will attract a few bidders. The car has definitely done its job from a marketing standpoint, sold several turn key builds, and has proven the performance of our chassis line. It has definitely paid for itself already. It is sad to see it go, but now it is time to free up some capital for the next project car....

There is a lot of effort that goes into keeping the shop looking good but it has to stay on par with the cars that we are building.

We ran out of floor space as new projects came in, so up they went. The Mustang is our car that will begin after Barrett-Jackson. The '36 3-window is on hold as we finish the same customer's other car, The Nova is waiting until the end of January before it starts up again. The 53 Doge wagon on the floor is a car that we just completed a custom chassis for. Since there are no aftermarket suspension components for it, the customer came to us to build a complete chassis to fit the original body.

Phil/Jeremy/Neal

The Chevelle looks awesome !!! I know there was a lot of discussion over what to do about the color of the car after the altercation with the big black cone in Texas. Don't second guess your decision, I think the new color looks great and it will do well down at Barrett. We'll be watching.
Hope you guys have a great trip.

Hey, what did you do with the old tires? I know your a little lite footed, so you didn't use them up all the way. But anyways it looks sick!!!!! Killer job on the makeover. I just hope it gets what you want out of it.

Marty - Stay focused here! One car at a time... you are always looking in the background... look at the big car taking up 3/4's of the picture!  That is a 71 we are doing for a guy out of Cali. It has our complete chassis under it and is getting a twin turbo LS shortly! Details to come.

Chris - thanks... We are confident with the car, just have to wait and see where the bid goes:_paranoid I was out in your neck of the woods today. Did your 9" come back yet?

Randy - Thanks, the red definitely sets it off nicely.

Curt - I still have the old tires if you are looking to make a launch ramp, I'll ship them over. Your 69 Camaro conv't is looking killer!

Brans - Maybe if it was the right one. Everyone wants to trade their left one. I have a feeling the rights may be worth more since they are so rarely traded.

Everyone else - thanks again for the compliments on the car. The storage rack came by way of the mother of all invention... necessity. We were running out of floor space and had several racks where we stacked chassis waiting to ship. We figured if they can hold 10 chassis, 3 cars shouldn't be a problem.

That turned out killer, concidering Im partial to green. You need to do another track car with a vibrant color so you guys can stand out on the course from the rest of the crowd again. Yellow?

Don't worry about shipping them. Just stack them in the parking lot next to your fence usually about 4 high, I nose right into them when I get there. Thanks Phil.

Are you guys concerned at all about the lack a of a reserve at BJ? I remember a not so impressive showing for the G-force Cuda (not impressive based on build cost for the car) a few years ago......:_paranoid

Whoa whoa whoa guys!!!!!!!! Calm down! Now lets get things straight! First of all, I do NOT hate this car, it is my most favorite 70 chevelle and I want to build my chevelle just like it! I got to ride in this car with Phil Gerber driving in the autocross and it was amazing!!!!

Now about my post, I did not mean to offend anyone, I just thought y'all wanted to see those pictures because no one else has them, I guess what I said wasn't well thought out. But, think about it, if Phil Gerber didn't wreck the car then what would be the point in spending all that time and money on a different design? But anyways, like you guys said i'm just a stupid 17 year old kid so i'm just gonna get out of y'alls way...

I didn't see your original post... so can't comment... but I will say that we were all young once. What you should remember is that this is a COMMUNITY not just plain white space floating in somewhere cyberville... The other end of your post is read by PEOPLE. People have feelings. If you have to apologize about what you've written... then it probably shouldn't have been written. This community - and some of us have become very good friends and never met - and some have gone out of their way to meet - is about POSITIVE reinforcement and helpful comments and sharing of valuable information. It's NOT a flame place. If you read comments directed at one or the other - if you hang here long enough - you'll see that these people are friends - some quite close to each other although separated by many states. This forum is our collective garage. We come here to hang out - banter - share - help - harass - learn - and just generally to be together. It's a great place to hang out. You can watch tv with one eye and peck away on the keyboard should you read something you feel you'd like to be a part of. Come hang out... say something when you have something to add... you'll like this place and we'll like you. So start over.... WELCOME!
