Hi, found this forum recently, or someone in nastyz28 adviced to ask about something from here.
Let me introduce my project(s) and what have i done so far. Gues little different what you guys have used to but bare with me.
First one is 1978 Camaro, i have driven Drifting at pretty serious level for five years now, allways with vintage cars (european) but decided that i want something different. From cars and about driving itself. I did Camaro that way that i can drive also track races in Historic Race Finland series called Roadsport V8, car was originally builted to that class and i did rather minor modifications it to use it at Drifiting, so itīs easy to convert between races.
More info about Roadsport series -> http://www.historicrace.fi/indexe.htm
I did drove only Drift season last summer, car was still little uncomplete and didnīt want to rush things.
Video footage from last Drifting season.

So at first "Project 2010"
This is how it was when i bought the car.

Engine fitted, LS3 engine did sit IMO nicely in place with original LS3 vette oilpan, sits low and far back, nearly mid engined Gearbox tunnel had to be remanufactured. 4gen pacesetter exhaust manifolds did fit rather easy in place, little bending ang cutting but couple hours of labour.

Will be posting updates when project moves along, i will be doing basically suspension and steering mods for next season, and brake upgrades for track racing. For steering i am going for rack, and need to get wheels to turn much more. Selfmade control arms and some other cars spindles are THE plan, maybe from MK4 Supra, would get some descent brakes for bonus then.
For rear iīm gonna ditch the leaf springs, somesord of 4-link setup is major plan, other option is some modern car IRS + diff. Iīm not afraid of little custom job or cutting the body. But iīm open suggestions about rear modifications.

Nice ride, interesting body to use too. Most drifters like bodies you can easily get replacement parts for but more power to you.
there's a couple closet drift guys in here but not to many.
Why not stick with the leafs. My understanding is you need a beefy rear suspension...ie type that doesn't bend easily and has has a relatively low roll center.
Either way you go please keep us updated.

I assume that i can get more traction with 4 links, would be lighter and most important easier to setup for different tracks, when leafspings own sprinrate and damping action mess coil-overs setup a bit. Alltough with IRS setup it would be better when entering normal track races.
Now i have few leafs removed from packs and coilovers with relatively soft springs, i can setup overall springrate to correct(ish) level thatway, changing springs to coilovers.
Leafsprings doesnīt make setting shock absorbers that easy, since they have their own ability to do that.
Roll center, i donīt understand much about that area.
And sorry if my english sucks a bit, iīm from Finland. Hope you understand all...
Bodyparts, those are relatively cheap comparing to Jap cars, many guys drive JDM cars in here, when you need something in those, it sucks. And iīve allways wanted to do these things litlle different than everyone else, makes also easier to get sponsors.

I am installing accusump and oilcooler but how to attach piping to engine, exhaust manifolds has pretty tight fit
Any hints how to do do it.
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/ctr-22-595_w.jpg
This kind of adapter didnīt fit, no room for pipes. there is less than inch from filter to exhaust.
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/ham-3323.jpg
This kind dont work too good either, pipes go too low (for ground clearance) so would need to be connected with 90degree fittings, then those are also pretty wide and it gets tight with exhaust again.
So, hints? And remember, LS3 so M22x1,5mm thread for filter...

Those will only work on a first gen spindle 67-69, the second gen is completly different and taller than the first gen.

Something has been done during long Finnish winter, main mission was steering and get wheels turn like they should in driftcar. Pics dont link correctly but click the links...
I made new lower control arms, using oldones as base. 7cm longer per side, changed wheels from 8x17et -10 to 8x16 et 8 and tyres from 235 -> 205. Now wheels can turn in THEORY 65 degrees
http://forum.vastaheitto.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4116.0;attach=5144 ;image
Then i get rid of old steering box and started to fit rack & pinion steering, i choosed Volvo 240 aluminium core rack, they use these in rally cars here and you can get different ratios to those, I had custom made infernals to that, now 2.5 turns lock to lock, in normal tarvel distance... And added 10cm more lenght to rack, so total travel now 28cm, should be enough....?
http://forum.vastaheitto.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4116.0;attach=5140 ;image
Then modified, knucles in right lenght and angle, i made bolt on adapters to knuckles, tested movements few times with those and when it was right made jigs and welded knuckles in those, maintained to keep them symmetrical that way, now it turns that 65 degrees and basically no ackerman at any turning angle. And doesnīt go near to dead angle at full lock, few days well spent
http://forum.vastaheitto.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4116.0;attach=5146 ;image
But how to route Steering axle, front crossmember was badly in way. Get 90 degree rotating gearbox to it:D Pic shows also how i solves upper control arm issue, i moved those from inside of brackets in frame to outside, so those moved 60cm out which correlated lenghtening of lower arms.
http://forum.vastaheitto.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4116.0;attach=5138 ;image
And last steering mod was to fit Opel Corsa C steering colum, tilt and elecric Power steering with adjustable sensitivity.
http://forum.vastaheitto.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4116.0;attach=5136 ;image
But then front wheel stick out 5cm from fenders, and front end had seen itīs better days also otherwise. So little glasfiber and paint.
Btw. couldnīt afford zipties...

http://forum.vastaheitto.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4116.0;attach=5160 ;image
Thats all about steering, not at full lock in this pic yeat.
http://nikon.1g.fi/kuvat/Tapahtumat/2011/ACS%202011/DSC_0157..jpg/_smaller.jpg
Then gearbox rebuild, it was kind of "loose" and i managed to do lot of misshifts in last season so in went new ->
-Carbon fiber Blocking rings
-Billet Keys for the 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and Reverse Synchronizer Assembly, with stronger springs for keys
-T56 3-4 Steel Shift Fork, used in Viper, standars aluminium is weak link
-3-4 Synchronizer Assembly. Complete new.
-Bronze fork pads for all shift forks.
Im glad i did it, feels completely different to shift. Otherwise nothing fancy changes in engine, otherwise than adding accusump -> Canton Racing Products 24-026 - Canton Racing Accusump Oil Accumulators - Overview - SummitRacing.com (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CTR-24-026/)
to make sure that engine has alwas oil and oilcooler.
http://forum.vastaheitto.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4116.0;attach=5148 ;image
To rear axle, i decided to get rid of leaf springs and go with Four-link setup. I got Competition engineering universal kit and that assembly is in progress right now. Final gear ratio is also going to change from 1:3.72 to 1:4.1 so fourth gear will also get in use. And axle shafts change to Mosers stronger ones.

Installation of Four-links, hints and tips please:)
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/cee-2017_cp.jpg
I got that Competition engineering kit for basis, but should i go with link angles and dimensions that are in instructions. Does link angle (meaning front brackets height) and link lenght mean much, or is it just links mutual difference in angle what makes differences in car behaviour.
Instruction ->

After some thinking and reading i think that put mounts that way that bars are level when installed in middle holes, sound right...?
Some problems...
Bar lenght, those are 21", does 17" sound too short? My suspension travel wonīt be max, 4" travel maximun in and out. In 21" lenght front mount are directly in place of roll cage main bar.
Or then put links inner side of frame rails but that doesnīt sound good option.
Or lower bars outer side, normal leafspring line, and upper bars inner side of frame.
Or both in normal place, lower bars 21" and upper bars 17" lenght, just cut front mounts and mount in different line.

Few vids and pics from first race.
Rear-end didnīt work that good, i think that four link setup didnīt mess anything but springs were too soft and maybe rubbers on end of coil-overs too soft. It was very restless to drive and movements little shaky when transiting, need to try different springs and few other adjustments.
But i managed to run third on qualifications and 6th at final standings. F*cked up little bit at tandems top 8 and miss shifted, from third to sixth...

That car looks bad ass and I love what you have done with it. Will have to check the videos when not at work.
Did I read earlier correctly? You added what looks to be huge gains in turning radius and are using a 2.5 turn rack and pinion? That looks straight nuts! Is that 2.5 turns lock to lock or from center lol?

Basically not, Rack is from Volvo 240, in normal little over 7" racks travelling distance wheels turn about 40deg to 40deg, but i had made custom infernals to it. 2.5 turns from lock to lock instead of about 3.5 turns, so itīs faster than original. But it also has longer racks axle with more teeths and 11" total travel. So when wheels turn from 60deg to 60deg it takes over well over 3 turns from lock to lock.
Dunno does my explanation make any sense... :D

It would be time to try normal track racing instead of drifting.
What would be recommended spring rates to this to rear-end? So it weights less than 1400kg= about 3050lbs race ready with driver and ratio about 50/50 front/rear. Four links at rear and coil-overs.
If i remember correctly i have used 600lbs/inch springs in drifting but how much softer when trying to get grip. Nothing else fancy to suspension at this point, just springs and front sway bar back in itīs place.

Have you tried it yet with bigger tires all the way around?
Typically the trade-off for steering angle you'll setup the car's suspension to understeer as well to create stability at a higher slip-angle...which is convenient, because when you add some front tire back into the equation you end up with a decent amount of front bite and a car that responds to input really well around a corner.
Was going to ask also, did you ditch the steering box just for convenience as far as getting steering parts over there?
MikkoV
11-01-2011, 12:46 PM
No i havenīt and donīt think that i will. Front geometry has been thought that way that this is tyre size and wheel offset i will use. If i change somethink tyres will contact something in bigger angles. Itīs quite well balanced with 205 R888 Toyos at front and 245 sponsor tyres rear. But still noticibly oversteering, thatīs way i want it.
Steering modīs. No i didnīt basically even thought at sticking with steering box. I didnīt realize how i could manage to get over 50degrees angle with good ackerman behaviour and not to have over-fast steering in max steering angles. Main reason for this in my mind is center bars front-back movement.
Plus one reason it is unsensitive feel, in my opinion.

Car sounded great! It's cool to hear all the small boosted engines with their turbos whining like hell but there's still no replacing a V8 that's being romped on.
How did you do in the competition?
MikkoV

Was fourth in that competition, in Tandem runs moved up on Top16 until in Top4 that handbrake broke and had loong straightening when following. Lost that couple and in Bronze battle against that big black Toyota just ****ed up otherwise, it was lot slower on wet track, i did go too close and made couple mistakes with my line and spinned.
Car sound:) Recently got new sponsor, and having new exhaust to it. Itīs now got just individual 3" pipes with one small mufflers at back. Think that will do x-pipe and pipesize 2.5" all the way or behind that X.

Very cool vids. Nothing like the v8 sound among the 4 bangers with turbo's etc.

Finnish season over, i did placed fifth at overall points in Finnish National drift championship series, i may be wrong but it may be first real national series driven under FIA. About 30 drivers... Not so bad, but not the way i planned it offcourse.
Cars are getting faster and faster, pretty much all top10 cars are in 600-800hp range, im struggling against with my barely over 500hp, funny still, Camaro is lighter than most of other cars. But iīm in need of supercharger if planning to run series next year with somesord of goals in mind, or trying to make 100-150hp more an N/A but, letīs see what i come up next winter...
Otherwise car is good, pretty well balanced and i have pretty much grip and speed in reserve if just would have power to spin those wheels, fast tracks which accelerate toward finish are pain...
Somesord of videoclip from last race, i did drive my this season only podium race in this, placed second. Other bests were 2 fourth places...
But hereīs the film, no one donīt watch whole 14min so quick guide on my battles
Top 16 in 5:20 against Pasi Koliseva and his Toyota Celica ST20? with ~600hp 1JZ
Top8 in 8:20 against Henri Haanpää and his Toyota JZX90, 2JZ about 600hp, that following was probably my best with this car.
Top4 in 9:50 against Marko Kivi, Lexus IS200 and 2JZ, 640hp if i remember right
Top4 OMT at 11:20
Final in 13:35 agains real rookie of the year, Harri Kosunen (won the Championship) with Skyline R33 with supercharged LS2 and 670hp. It is two time Finnish championship car by previous owner.

Im open for ideas how to make reliable N/A 100hp more on this 475whp LS3, now just cam, exhaust and standalone ecu. Best idea in my mind is Procharger D1 series an E85 fuel. Ok it should be good for atleast 700hp but...

Few updates...
Finnish winter is long and cold, better to stay in garage.
First we did gave body bit tidening up and makeover.
We made new front fenders (and offcourse moldings for those.) New RS model front end parts with few added OEM goodies. Lotīs of fitting and body straightening and new paintjob and graphix. Still missing RS front lip...

Engine:
First i changed ACL Race conrod bearings and ARP conrod bolts, checked pushrods and did basic maintenance.
Then bit redo on fuelsystem, E85 compatible foams to fuelcell, KMS 1210cc injectors. Holley HP series low pressure fuel pump, new filters and couple lines that werent meant with E85.
Then added oil cooler adapter palte and connected Accusump oil accumulator and Oil cooler.
Then offcourse a centrifugal supercharger :D Paxton Novi 2200SL,with ECS brackets. That pumps max. 1450cfm, 1000hp. Little less on my car. 600x300x100 chinese intercooler. And VAG 60mm electric throtle body used as blow-off. Other mechanical blow-of used as boost control...

http://forum.vastaheitto.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4116.0;attach=6062 ;image
Then bit off hazle with charger belts, with that throttle body. And with boost (was bit too much 0-7-0.8bar) and A1000 fuelpumpu met itīs limits.
Dynograph from first test, bit too much boost, bit too low on fuel and we did stop there, lots of power on reserve.
http://forum.vastaheitto.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4116.0;attach=6050 ;image
I changed fuelpump to Fuelab Prodigy 1500hp, did few upgrades and another try, on 0.5-0.6bar boost gave folloving, clutch or tyres did slip after 5500rpm, but it pulls on great to 6600rpm.

Very nice power numbers. I have to ask though, what part does having a supercharger and now even more power play in a drift competition? It appears you have plenty of power to keep the wheels spinning and as I understand it, it's more about follow the leader than get to the finish line first. So did you need more power or does it give you better advantage somehow?
Good luck this season!

Evolution of Camaro continues ;)
I did re-design front suspension. Removed front springs that were between frame and lower control arm. Made new upper mounts for coil-overs. S13 coilies, modified lower end. Also changed upper controld arms to SPC adjustable ones, here comes Caster.

6-rib charger belts didnīt hold up that long last summer, changed over 10 of them during summer. So i did bought Summit SFI 8-rib balancer and changed 8-rib charger pulley and belt. Hope it helps... Gates belt align lazer was great help when aligning pulleys, good buy from Rockauto.

Re-made fuel lines from enginebay. With ebay cheapo AN fittings and Nylon-braided fuel line that should accept RE85, also Holley fuel rails had been allready changed after last posts.
Also changed original throtle body that had been modified from DBW to cable driven. It didnīt work properly and eated couple of TPS sensors during 4 summers. Ebay china-billet one seemed quite good for itīs price.

Also did made support bar to back of bonnet. It was quite restless in high speeds without additional rear center pins. Also should keep smells at engine out from cabin. Heater inlet is front of screen as usual.

This oneīs still alive ;)
This winters project was building proper engine. We did some fast engine build last summer, but now upgrade rest of it.
Wiseco Professional series 4.070" pistons.
Callies Compstar 6.125" connection rods
LS7 lifters
And Melling Hi-volume oilpump.
Rest of engine specs will stay the same, and that is:
LS3 crate engine
-ARP 8740 main stud kit, 234-5608
-ARP 8740 Head stud kit, 234-4317 ***
-LS9 head gaskets, 7layer MLS
-Lunati 21460702 cam, .050 227/238, .583"/.600"
-Lunati 73925K1 valve spring kit, 379 lbs./in ***
-COMP Cams double roller adjustable cam chain kit 7105

Also will be upgrading clutch, iīve had Clutchmasters FX500 now 5 years. That amazing single disc clutch holded 700hp/900nm and several abuse. So iīm sticking with the brand.
Now clutcmasters FX850 with steel flywheel. Looks so pretty...

Engine has been diaasembled, now in machinery shop and waiting for parts.
Iīve have been working my other -70 Charger this winter, pure streetcar but think that it can be skidded when done.
Currently fitting engine and gearbox...

Bit of progress with this. Over half of Finnish drift season now driven and itīs been now working nicely :) And few trophies also added to collection.

For this season we did tubular front end for Camaro, for easy maintenance and collision repairs. And rebuilded engine with forged internals, spec sheet was pretty much what i speculated earlier. Raised boost a tad and ->

After that dynotime i did do new exhaust. 2x3" instead of 2x2.5", with x-pipe. Boost raised from 0.8 to 1.0bar and power ~825hp/ bit over 1000nm

We have had time to even film something in races. More later but couple gopro vids for now, mostly chase runs. First one from Finnish national series Round 4, placed second. .
Other from NEZ Championship Finnish round, dropped in second elimination round there. Against current Estonian champion, no major mistakes but not my best driving.
