View Full Version : Me n Ethyl
Ethyl is a 2004 GTO. I bought her new in November 2004. We put 95,000 miles on her with 80,000 of them being at 450+ rwhp. In May 09 we decided to go completely through it. First off the original LS1 running heads and cam for 85,000 miles only required honing, cam bearings, and rings and is back in another GTO making nearly 500 rwhp with forged internals, heads, and cam. In our build we initially started to put a 91 mm Borg Warner Turbo on but switched to a PD twin Helix Harrop HVT2300 supercharger. After getting it together we decioded to go with the 4.0 Liter Whipple to see how far we could take the Texas SPeed and Power built 408 LQ9 Engine.
The engine. We started with a LQ9 Iron Block built by Texas Speed. It has Diamond Pistons, Eagle Rods, and an Eagle Forged Crank. The entire rotating assembly is coated and the pistons are a -28cc dish. We put ETP 245 heads on the car and retained the 1 7/8 inch Kooks Headers.
Fabrication. We relocated the ECM to inside the drivers compartment and fabricated a coil pack relocation scheme with some modified GM Performance Valve Covers to clean up the appearance. We fabricated an AWIC reservoir with a front mounted heat exchanger.
Forced Induction. We started out intending to put a Borg Warner 91 mm Turbo on it but went with a Harrop HVT2300. Our goal was 20 lbs of boost since the engine was built to go to 1500 HP. The Harrop maxed out around 18 lbs so we went with the Whipple Sand Rail 4.0 Liter Supercharger. That Supercharger is a beast. We have seen 19 lbs of boost on the engine thus far with the OEM pulleys. We also replaced the 2004 GTO radiator with a 2005 Radiator to eliminate the large fender mounted catch can.
Fueling. For fuel we went with 83 lbs Accutron Injectors fed by an Aeromotive A1000 pump through a -10 an line. The -10 splits into 2 -8 an lines into the rails with an Aeromotive Regulator sitting on the other side maintaining constant pressure. We used the OEM fuel system to complete the return.
Clutch/Tranny. One of the reasons we built the car was to stress prototype Monster Clutches. Monster Clutch and SNL Performance have done all of the fabrication on the car. The T56 was built to go to 1000 ft lbs of torque using carbon fiber synchros, brass shift fork pads, steel shifting forks and face plated components. The current clutch is a Monster 11" Ceramic that went straight from the rack to a WOT pull on the dyno. That clutch has held for over 3,000 miles now. See a couple of Dyno pulls below.
Drivetrain. We turned our attention to the drivetrain with a complete drivetrain by GForce1320 including the 3.5 inch carbon fiber driveshaft, 8 inch tubs, coil over kit, 33 spline stubs and hubs, 300 mm CVS shafts, and a 33 spline spool using 3.46 gears. We will be running 14.5 inch slicks on 15 by 10 Holeshot Rims with 15 by 4 inch skinnies on the front. Currently have MT ET DRs, 295 by 55 by 15s on it.
Finishing touches. SNL put a Kook's afterburner 3" exhaust on the car. We added a FireCharger fire suppression system and Prosport AFR/Boost gauges. We've modified the GTO Shifter by adding a GMM Race Unit with an SNL developed Hurst shift lever adapter. Currently we are still trying to figure out how to get a hood on the car.
Suspension. Lovell's suspension components from Kollar Racing will replace every component in the suspension with new bushings, and fittings. We are also going to the Lovell's 90/10 struts as the car will work mostly on the strip once completed. We still need to complete the hood, add the Roll Cage, and completely repaint the body to finish the build.

Sounds Killer WRP...
Off topic comment here: Our little corner of the web here is starting to remind me of mid-2000's offshore boat poker runs. More power (3000hp) and tech going into those boats than full race builds. And they were running @ 175mph all day...until the ecomony tanked. One 'upsmanship' at its best! HiJack over...
 Thanks for the comments, you make a good point. That is the reason what you see in the photos is just a small part of the build. We literally cut the GTO undercarriage out of it for the tubs and QA1 coilovers and the full return fuel system was probably overkill as well. The entire drivetrain has been replaced/rebuilt. If I were doing it again I would probably have gone to a tube chassis. Some of us believe this is all going away and soon as your post suggests. Before it does though, it was a thrill doing something with the car no one else has done. I guess that is what it is all about, at least for me. We will get the car on the track at some point.

Really happy with SNL visit today. Things moving forward. The upper cog drive and shaft are fabricated and ready to go. We have the tensioner and need to resolve mounting it. Right now waiting on belt and a couple of spacers. The best news is once everything is lined up we may not need to change the radiator.

Pulled the trigger on a complete Moroso Electric Remote Water Pump with all the fittings today. Saw the SEMA display and an actual electric mounted on a BBC last Saturday night, in lust with the look. Hopefully we will get the shipment from Moroso this week and start laying out the install. We have one spacer still being fabricated for the tensioner pulley.

Started on the remote water pump installation today. I am eliminating the tensioner on the passenger side and wonder if anyone might know of an aftermarket tensioner I can replace the fixed tensioner on the driver's side with?

:) Had a pretty good day today. Spent some time mocking up the remote water pump layout and trying to determine how to solve the tensioner issue.
For the layout, the battery goes to the trunk and we will mount the electric water pump on the frame rail where the battery tray was. The remote thermostat and filler neck will mount on a brace on the passenger side head. That lets me run all the hoses to the engine in from the passenger side and clears away any interference from the Power steering pump. The return from the pump goes into the radiator bottom mount while the return from the filler neck will be the longest run from the passenger side head mounted bracket back to the driver's side radiator fitting. All in all it will clean up nicely and keep the heat on the passenger side. Steve is going to mount the Moroso Power steering pump on the driver's side back near the master cylinder. At the end of the day we will have probably moved 50-60 lbs off the nost of the car to the trunk.
For the tensioner, the Whipple had an 8 rib tensioner for the serpentine belt. That tensioner was mounted on the front bracket and was used to achieve better belt wrap. It is already aligned with the accessory drive. We might have to trim the outer ribs off, it was a ten ribbed serpentine tensioner. Final bits coming from Moroso include the rear mount battery kit and cables and some black anodized fittings. We are just waiting for the tensioner spacer for the Cog tensioner now. Pictures is with everything mounted more or less except the cooling hoses.

Here is a view from a different angle. You can see the 10 rib Whipple Serpentine pulley. I am going to use that as a tensioner on the accessory belt. We are waiting on the fabrication of the spacer for the cog tensioner in the mock up it appears to not be stuck out enough..

Here is the final mock up with the mounting bracket for the remote thermostat in place. We may have to shim it all out a little more. Also instead of the NPT to 1.25 hose connection we will probably go with an 1" NPT to -12AN fitting.

Got a little more done today. Began to test fit the -12AN fittings with the remote water pump. Have one issue I will heave to solve with the driver's side lower fitting. Solution may be to reroute the belt, the 90 degree -12AN swivel fittlng hits the belt on the traditional tension pully mount. Still waiting on 4 -12AN Fittings from Jegs. Also got the plugs for the back of the remote thermostat and the temperature sending unit opening.

One of the biggest projects was to weld the heat exchanger coolant reservoir to the XS Power battery tray. I think it looks pretty good and gives me a place to mount the tank flat and secure in the trunk. SNL is working with a new fabricator who does an excellent job.

We intend to finish the battery wiring tomorrow, mount all the fittings for the water pump, and the coolant reservoior in the trunk. Wednesday we will hook up the hosing and have the final meeting with the machinist who is designing and building the tension pulley bracket. Hope to be tuning in a week or two. Really quality welding getting the PS reservoir bracket set up and notching the valve covers/welding in tabs so they won't slide and welding in the 90 degree fittings for the evac system.

ton of work, good job.
Thanks, quite a bit done today. Finalized the electrical system setup with the rear moutned battery. We should have that in in a couple of weeks. The welder finished most of the valve covers and the evac system. Also got the water pump bracket roughed in. Going to mount it along the passenger side frame rail where the battery came out using battery tray holes. Running the outlet down through the frame and bending it 90 degrees into the engine compartment.

Fabulous day today. Got the bulk of the remote water pump fittings mounted. All that is left now is to resolve the heater issue and string the hose. I think the pump mount was pretty cool, drilled a hole in the frame and fed the -12AN swivel fitting through the frame. This way if the wheels somehow get up and we bounce hard, the water pump will have a backup brace to hold it and keep the unit out of the belts and hoses.

Bruce began the remote battery mounting. He has studied it for a while and decided to mount a Ford solenoid in the back instead of using the OEM solenoid with the starter. This will keep the wire to the starter from being hot all the time. It will only be hot when the ignitioin switch is turned on to start the car. He's going with breakers instead of fuses and got the rear grounding hooked up.

gettin' close.
Thanks, I am looking for an electric twin fan with a very low profile, preferrably less than 2.5". Without that we may have to modify the radiator mount and or build a new radiator. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Killer car. No idea how I have missed this thread. Good work and good luck.
Pretty good day today. Bruce finished the trunk and back side wiring then moved to the forward engine compartment. He completed most of the cable wiring from front to back as well. In the engine compartment he linked everything to the distribution box and fed from there to relays for the accessories, fans, pumps, etc.

Damned good week this week. Only thing between us and some Dyno time is wiring and installing the fans and radiator, then hooking the cooling system up to it. Here is the plumbing hooked up except for the radiator and the rear mounted heat exchanger. We will probably work on the hoses to clean them, up but I am very pleased with the setup as is.

your still doing a heck of job bill! been a while sense iv run into you @ SNL...ill be up there tomorrow morning getting some suspension maintenance done. Car looks to overtake many in the future!
Pretty much got over the last hurdle today. The radiator and fan setup is hooked up with wiring and plumbing. The remote electric water pump is hooked up. The cooling system is under pressure. Only thing remaining is to hook the heat exchanger reservoir up in the trunk. May start tomorrow

+1 on the slipping, we are having to brace the snout though. We were getting close to finishing the car so we tore the interior out to start the roll cage install

Just got back from a hell of a good trip to SNL. Steve has really outdone himself. He has designed a top cog pulley that I believe is going to be more resilient and less prone to either breakage or belt walking due to flexing. The solution is high quality machined with very close tolerances. His earlier attempts were pretty good but there was still a little bit of flex in the Cog and the mount which transferred the pressure to the rest of the snout. You guys have topld me breaking snouts is not an uncommon thing. Steve has taken the entire thing to a new level, an artform as far as I am concerned. Some might not like it but I personally believe it will carry me to levels of output I never thought possible and do it reliably. Anyone with a Gilmer drive or contemplating going to one with either a Kenne Belle or a Whipple should contact SNL and talk to Radio. Pics below are of the actual snout shaft for the cog. Radio will release the pictures of the brace when he finishes it.

We got the car on the dyno last night. Good news is she held 21 lbs of boost with no falling off so the cog drive works great. Also the Moroso remote electric water pump kept the ECT at a steady 185-190 through the session, I highly recommend that product. On the down side the injectors maxed out. We are going to have to go to 190 lbs injectors to keep up with the 21 lbs of boost. IATs were through the roof so we have some work to do there yet. We also discovered a breaker box in the rear mount battery install was just not robust enough to survive the vibrations and we will have to work out an alternative to that. Car made 775/850 to the wheels with 12 degrees of timing in a best of two pulls. We get the injectors sorted out and work on the IATs we will hit at it again.

nice! Get the IAT's under control, and oh boy. :unibrow:
I've teased you guys for about a week on the new snout for the cog drive. I am sure many were wondering how many seconds the cog would last until it snapped off. This is the solution designed by Steve Addison of SNL Performance. Snout problems and belt slipping are problems of the past.

Will you have to tub the car to get the 305s in there? I thought I read somewhere that these cars can't handle a wide tire.

Measuring and masking it off, had removed some of the subbracing Friday.

Initial cuts are well inside what we expected the ultimate dimensions were. Kept the cuts small and closed the hood frequently to judge measurements.

Really couldn't decide about covering or leaving out in the open until we saw what we had to work with when we got it to close. I will be looking to see what it would take to cover the blower and intake.
Next major hurdle was the intake and Throttlebody. Inexperienced worker was a barrier, a few unnecessary dings and scratches

nice stub shafts and axles. :wow:
Thanks, the T56 ought to be sweet too. Rockland Gears internals built by RPM. Face plated with dog cut gears and a new Monster triple disk clutch.
Test fitted the interior back into the car today, Took some trimming on some of the panels. Also laid out the Simpson belts and began the installation of the fire suppression system.

Picked up a really cool Roll Bar mounting kit from Pegasus Racing. Fits the Firecharger fine. Also figured out this Firecharger System only supports a total of three nozzles with outlets for two lines. That means that I will have two nozzles in the Trunk/Fuel Cell zone and one nozzle in the cabin on me. Based on that I am going to install another pbttle to have two nozzles in the engine compartment with an additional one in the cab on me. I would like to figure out a cable pull system that would allow me to activate both bottles simultaneously. Anyone with ideas let me know.

As I am fixing the split seams on the front seat I also decided to begin the cleanup of the Roll Cage welding in the back. I am using brushed on Rustoleum Enamel this time, used enamel spray paint last time. First order of business was to clean up the welded areas, especially where the heat started rust. Had to wire brush off the old paint which was flaking. Took it down to bare metal as best as I could. I primerred it this afternoon and will paint it glossy black tomorrow.

Finished up the first part of the Fire Suppression. I have three zones; cabin, trunk/fuel cell, and engine compartment. Need to get another bottle to do The engine compartment and to put an extra nozzle in the cabin. Lines are run. At the end of this I will have two nozzles in the engine compartment, two in the cabin, and two in the trunk, Right now I have 2 in the trunk and 1 in the cabin. Finished up neater than I expected though replacing the paneling is going to be a fun time.

Note the use of blood during the install, seemed to make things slide into place easier.

Dual boost?

How much HP should that inlet be worth? It looks to be a lot less restrictive, which can make big gains depending on how good or bad the original setup is.
We were debating that today. The fabricated (homemade intake has a curve rear that forced the airflow into the supercharger. This one has a lot of sharp angles. The homemade intake has approximately 35-40% more air volume than this one. Biggest gain I see here is in fitment and perhaps a lot better throttle cable arrangement. We should know in 2-3 weeks.
Dual boost? No sir, just a side by side comparison of what Iam replacing.
More blood

This is the baddest T56 on the planet. Was my wildest dream and turned into a nightmare. Went out and saw the actual T56 today. the polished shaft looked incredible. Actually saw the build sheet on it.
Picture of the sheet didn't come out but it was essentially as follows:
faceplated by Liberty and included
Liberty Billet interlock
Liberty Billet Interlock Bolt
Liberty Billet shift plate set
Gforce 2.71 ratio 9310 straight cut gear set
micro polished internal parts by Performance Metal
Bronze fork pads and shifter bushing
RPM modified 1-2 shift fork.
RPM managed the project and performed the teardown, prep, and shipping.

Thanks for commenting. I think the next two weeks are going to get really exciting.
Starting to clean up things we rushed before. Worked on the electrical connections we modified when we relocated the battery to the trunk today. Hard to tell by the photos but the steel plate was beginning to rust. Rather than powdercoat it I changed it to aluminum and smoothed all the sharp edges.

good show but maybe i missed it... why ditch God's own T56?
It was 15 weeks late in the delivery. About week 9 with no real response we frankly figured they were not going to be able to deliver so we began the process of changing over to the TH400. We literally only had a few days warning before the T56 showed up so we had already pulled the trigger on the TH400. You seriously cannot try to pursue a program with no indication of when and where things are going to show up. It would have taken longer to reorient back to the T56 than continue on. For instance the pedals were pulled out, the lines undone, the master cylinder removed, and the shifter boot hold cover cut up to accommodate the automatic floor plate.
I didn't mind being one of the first and never really expected any breaks or special treatment but I also didn't expect to be on the back burner. It was a great team of vendors that came together and given time to learn to work together they will have a positive impact. I have too much in the car to not have the same priority that everyone else hasa right to expect.
We put the T56 on the shelf to use as a backup when we refresh the TH400. It was a first rate job but I lost a good deal of the season waiting on it. Maybe after they have sold a few more and can get consistent with the production (thus the ability to repair and support them) I might dust if off and try it. I don't see that happening this year.
Took us 19 hours to get the speedometer gear off. Could have probably done it sooner but have never done that so was somewhat of a ***** about it. Finally got it off this afternoon. Has delayed the build a bit.
First thing we had to do was take the old style Speedometer Gear off the Output Shaft

Took us 19 hours to get to this point, yea we are pussies but this is the first time we've done this.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Transmission/Transmission-45-640.jpg
Then we had to heat up the 17 tooth reluctor that enables us to use the Speed Sensor
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Transmission/Transmission-38-640.jpg
Align the Reluctor to the middle of the hole, approximately the same location as the gear we removed.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Transmission/Transmission-54-640.jpg
Bolt in the Speed Sensor and button up the tailshaft
I had really hoped to spend next week finishing the small stuff and dyno tuning it. Then a couple of weeks getting the hood finished. The delay has pretty much put the whole fall drag racing season at risk. While I could run without a hood after all the effort I thought I would just wait until the car was done. I can't put the CBM intake on, can't finish the hood, can tune the car until I get the transmission in. Cannot even really finish putting the interior in.
We have gotten some stuff done. Replaced the rear main seal and bolted the flexplate in, removed the shifter boot and cut the console for the shifter to fit, plus put the hole cover plate in.

We had to change torque convertors so it has delayed us some. Got the new unit in today and I will attack it tomorrow. Also worked on a setup for the Fire Suppression System. The system I bought supports only two zones. I will buy another but was perplexed at how to put suppression in all three zones with a single pull release. Solution will be a roll bar mounted cable mount with both cable pulls side by side. I can rig a pull like an ejection seat or something where one tug pulls both cables. Here is the setup with only one pull mounted. Will probably end up putting that on the top bar.

Working on a central console for the various switches. This is the first stab containing the LC1 calibration button and LED, The Line loc switch and the transbrake button. Will eventually incorporate the Nitrous switches and hope to steal Plumcrazy's idea to use one button on the shifter knob controlling either the transbrake or the line loc depending on how the toggle goes. Was thinking it would be cool to toggle a switch for the fans for cooling power between runs.

Got much of the interior back in today. Still have to remount the ECM, front kick panels and passenger seat. I think the console panel turned out well. I bought a second Firecharger system so now I service three zones with two nozzles each. To solve the activation challenge I just mounted the handles where I could pull them both easily.

Put in the drivers side harness today, well mostly, still have to work on the mounting on the right side of the car. We also got the fuel pump filters right. Thanks to RUQWIKR on LS1GTO for pointing out the fire suppression bottles need to be horizontal to function properly. That will be my next project.

Got Ethyl out for street tuning yesterday. She decided to show us who was boss and proceeded to kill the entire Alliance Air Show and Goodguys car show. All Matt and I had to do was get her to the right intersection at the right time. On the up side, we heard some cool insults, some of which are anatomically interesting though most likely impossible. Saw several vintage firearms and a couple of nickel plated Saturday night specials. I'd estimate we had 10,000 cars blocked for about 10 minutes. Once her point was made she fired right up and continued on the 60 mile journey home. Enjoy the video, the reason for the grey was I had ducked a 22 caliber pistol shot and dropped the phone on the seat camera side down. A couple of people from the Goodguys show followed us over to the nearest lot to tell us she sounded good. Three bikers came over to whip our ass.

how's the tuning going?
Shredded a belt and took out the electrical for the water pump. Mostly repaired but waiting to finish installing a new high torque starter and finish some odds and ends. Hope to be back with it this weekend.

Doing a lot of driving to work out the low end tune and driveability. I really am enjoying the car as the tune gets more dialed in. Last week we worked on the exhaust that was hitting in some areas and we replaced the OEM Starter at 100,00 miles with a PowerMaster High Torque starter. Those mods alone increased the driveability of the car remarkably. Nothing special in these vids but they do give a sense of the way the car handles.

looks like fun....... :unibrow: Any idea why the blower failed?
Remains a mystery. It has been installed for nearly three years now put a little over 4,000 miles on it. My best guess is that there are a combination of problems.
We had trouble with the snout breakaway a couple of years ago and they upgraded the system. So where the snout would have probably normally broken as it was designed to do, the force was transmitted to the rear bearings. Once the rotors touched, I was smurfed.
Discussions with Whipple indicate there is nothing noticeabley wrong with the cog drive, ie that wasn't the problem. However, the belt tended to hit the brace on the driver's side when cold,. I am thinking the extra drag that caused was a contributor.
Whipple has a 2000 hp marine internal setup that they have now applied to the system. I think we were operating far beyond the specs they had in mind, and we've been doing it for three years.
Previously we had fueling issues, using the wrong fuel filter on the inlet. The engine was starved for fuel which probably explains the low horespower ie 969 wheel horsepower. Changing the filters forced us to redo the entire tune. It will bee interesting to see if that affected the numbers.
Bear in mind, of the 4,000 miles, probably several hundred were on the dyno at WOT. You've seen my videos on the rest.
We have re machined the snout brace and Whipple has now upgraded the rotor pack and bearings. Everything in the blower is new except the case.
When I put the TH400 in we initially had a 4500 rpm stall. That sucker hit hard amd given the other issues may have contributed. We have gone back to a 3700 rpm stall now.
There are not a lot of people to share experiences with on 4.0 Liter Whipple mounted on LS engines. Since this wil apparently be the upgrade to the 2.9 on the COPO, perhaps there will be more learning in the future. I guess I am finding what breaks first.

I am looking for a better window switch option than the OEM. I think I have found a couple of rocker switches that will work. I am going to move the fire pulls back to the rollbar then add a on off on switch with two LED's one for transbrake and one for lineloc. Plumcrazy turned me on to the setup. With the switch, the LED will indicate which one is active for the shifter button.
