View Full Version : Greg Weld's dirty secret!
In his signature, it says; "I have some tools... would someday like to have some skill using them... " but the truth is that he has a buttload of tools that would actually make many shops jealous and he knows how to use every one of them expertly! He's even a great welder and can weld aluminum and steel like nobody's business. He even repaired a very thin-wall lug key of mine with his welder that looked like it was fixed by a jeweler.
I've had the privilege of hanging out with Greg the past few months because the new LS2 in the Buick broke a valvespring and was stranded at another Lat-g member's house for a day so when Greg found this out, he just hitched up his trailer and came down to drag it home to the dream shop and said "there is no schedule, rush, thrash or timeline, we'll get to it when we feel like it and take our sweet time doing it right" which was a huge relief that has been almost therapeutic and made the kick in the teeth of the failed valvespring such a non-issue that was purely a blessing in disguise. Since it failed right at the end of Summer and my machinist wanted to go through the motor to make sure nothing happened on the bottom end, we just took our sweet time working on it a day here and a day there when we weren't tied up with life, travel, family and business and it was a lot of fun.
Greg is so thorough and meticulous that he would see something that was overlooked in the motor-swap thrash or an aftermarket part that wasn't holding up like he thought it should and he would just announce that was our project on this day or that and we'd make it right. No bolt went into anything without getting Loctite or anti-seize and then torqued with the beeping electronic torque wrench to factory specs.
There were also explicit instructions to leave ALL tools on the cart and not to put them away "because you'll misplace them and lose them forever and screw up my whole system!"
We had a great time through it all and Greg is good company and good people and I learned a great deal during the process. He is a true example of the kind of people that reside at this forum and I'm glad to call him my friend.
I drove the car home on Friday and it was even better than before. I look forward to a few more dry winter days to get out with it and fully intend to flog it all Spring and Summer this coming year with all the bugs completely worked out because it's ready so far in advance of the break in the NW weather.
Thanks for everything, Greg
Bryce

Jason -- you were supposed to keep this little bit of work on the QT! I kept quiet on my end.
Thanks guys really.... Todd has it right BTW.... the last part anyway. Although I really wish he'd have called me a "BIG PRICK"! Sadly.... <looking down, hanging head>
I'm the luckiest guy - in Al's words - "ON THE PLANET" (or was it galaxy?). Just trying to pay it forward a bit. I've always said that this - or any other - hobby is not about the hobby... it's just a way to get guys together and have some fun and meet some new people. Thrashing away in the shed really just isn't nearly as much fun as watching Jason hit his head on unmovable objects (like lift arms! Gawd that had to hurt! My stomach that is.... from laughing at him).
Jason just hasn't discovered that all those tools are brand new and I have no earthly idea what we just fixed or why. :D

Look at all of Greg's fans! Only outnumbered by his friends who love to break balls!
He won't let you buy lunch so I figured the least I could do was give him a public thank you.
Ya, Greg kept the car on the QT for me but the main reason I wasn't talking about it was because I started out the process pissed off at the valvespring but like I said before, it all worked out for the best.
Having the car running and driving again gave me the chance to take it to a little Cars & Coffee thing here in Tacoma at Griot's Garage which is an amazing place and the special guest Saturday Morning was Peter Brock who had his own personal Daytona Prototype Replica with an LS7 and his own Datsun 510 with an efi injected small block Chevy in it and told his biography to the crowd from starting at GM Design under Harley Earl to working for Carroll Shelby and designing the Daytona Coupe to having the rug pulled out from under him by Shelby snaking him out of a deal with Toyota Racing which is what lead him to start BRE with Datsun. It was great and he was an amazing speaker with an incredible story about his career arc and the best part was driving the Buick across town in the sunshine to be there. It was cold as hell but it was sunny!

It helps your addiction -- and the amount of free time you spend on the internet if -- BIG IF -- you are:
Retired
Have multiple laptops all with wifi
Have lots of hired help to do the crap you used to have to do on your own <grin>
As I've learned in the REAL AA.... an addiction is only a problem - if it's a problem to "others" or you're harming yourself.
So far - the only harm I've done to myself is that my nuts sometimes get awfully warm with the laptop actually in my lap. :unibrow: And my wife is too busy to notice what the heck I'm doing.

Hey cool!!! You weren't outed Greg. I kinda suspected you were the type to help a guy in need.
Cause really, whats the point in having tools that can make tools unless you have a purpose for them. Your own car(s) prolly only need so much. Really cool to find a person that could benny from the knowledge and a sweet shop.
Specially when it counts and you are stranded.
There are some car groups that have a registry of folks in the group that a guy thats traveling and gets into mechanical trouble can contact.
Its a nice idea. Kinda iffy if you dont know the person. But the one group I associate with is a small group. I dont even mind opening up my garage or house to them.
Its like if you are taking a trip and get some mechanical failure there is a person to call that knows the car and is willing to help out. Much better than getting towed into the local gas station.
I will make myself available to any of the guys in the group and we can fix just about anything, minus breaking down a tire off the rim. But I have a truck that can cart the tire and wheel to the local tire shop for that.
I like the idea of having contacts all around the country. Even if it means just a place to be able to swap out an alternator VS doing it in the parking lot of the auto parts store.
There is alot of comfort knowing you have some buds around the states that will help as much as they can. Even if it is only a place to park the car for a night so they can work on it in the morning.
And there is always a spare guest room available here for some much needed sleep (after we (or I) toss some suds and laugh about the break down). Morning will come and time to dive into the fix. And Im all about fixing. Kinda refreshing to see the idea isnt lost. JR

I have been pushing an LS6 around the shed for 5 or 6 years now at least perhaps longer... When I mentioned this for the '32 - Steve just about convulsed... so can't use it there... Just haven't had the right project for a LS engine I guess.
LS motors are just all wrong in a '32 ford.. Unless the styling is all done "hi zoot". Which, to me, is all wrong as well.
I'm going to use the LS6 in my '37 3 window.... But with 8 stacks and hidden coils etc. I had the chassis for that project built for the LS already.
