well i finally got the time to start my build thread. if you havent read in the new members section my name is mitchell laucks and im from the small town of fredericksburg pa. i got this car when i was 16, and drove it occasionally to high school and to some shows. i did some basic upgrades, rebuilt suspension with poly bushings, new sway bars and a 400/700r4 combo. it was fun but after my fathers pro street chevelle was finished and started kickin butt around local shows and even winning an award at cruisin ocean city, md. i had to step my game up. here it starts.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c23/dropthesixseven/raked.jpg
here is how it sat before i started all this, lowered a little, 17 inch americans and the 400/700r4.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c23/dropthesixseven/005-9.jpg
i had wiring issues with the car for a long time and finally got fed up with it. i didnt know id tear it down as far as i did but you all know how it goes. ill point out that im not doing a frame off on the car because it is spotless underneath, just pressure washed the oil and sludge off the underside, reundercoated it and thats all.
when i decided to rewire the car i pulled the interior out. most of it fell to pieces so new interior was in the works....
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c23/dropthesixseven/005-10.jpg
molded headliner i did myself, missing the trim.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c23/dropthesixseven/001-29.jpg
speaker pods and door panels i did myself, still workin a console and armrests for it.
at cruisin oc 2010 i got a killer deal on billet specialties, and had to make em fit so on when the ridetech brackets and airlift airbags also did a front disc conversion kit on it and hydroboost i stole off a junkyard pickup.

haha, i dont actually speak the best spanish. most of the catch crews in our poultry business are mexican, so i learn a little, mostly insults though.
i appreciate all the kind words. once i get some more sheetmetal ill get the passenger side of the engine compartment finished.
this is the big block i have built for it. first engine i built entirely myself, no help from dad on this one.

its a 468, oval port gm heads with some porting, victor jr, 252 @.050 comp hydraulic cam, 10:1 pistons, pretty mild build. bought most of it from swap meets and leftover parts from other builds. one day im hoping to put some hilborn efi on it, but thats way out of my 22 year old getting married next year broke ass budget.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c23/dropthesixseven/045-1.jpg
if you notice i work body line to body line on the car, before i hit it with any mud the car gets blocked down real hard with 40grit then the hammering and a skim to finish it. theres really no hacked repairs found yet except for the cave and pave on the roof that was recovered in vinyl, but thats all sorted out now.
also tubbed the rear wheel wells, where the the outer part of the wheel wells were rubbing my tires ever so slightly when i rolled low, so they were cut out to the seam where the inner meets the outer, and the tubs were butted to the quarter and seam sealed to the quarter panel. loads of clearance now. also used some 1/4" roundbar to clean up the wheelwell lip.

well, got most of the bodywork done and threw some feather fill on it. decided to take a break from bondo dust while im fighting a cold and work on mocking up the engine and clutch. ordered the parts for the clutch from hubbards so i should be able to finish that up this weekend.
headers fit good except for the flanges hitting the head bolts, which is kinda mind boggling to me. but what can you do. everything clears so far, i havent had to break out the bfh yet. also got the air intake all done except for welding the stainless tubing up, which will get polished.
also if you notice the smashed stool in the first picture, well its about 15 years old of rotten out wood that was in our yard forever. i was using it to prime the roof and wham, it finally gave up on me. time for a diet. :poop:

fronts are 20x8.5 with 255/35zr20s, rears are 22x10 285/35zr22s i think the rear offset is 5.25, and the rear is narrowed 2 inches. the wheel lip is also rolled to only 1/4 inch wide in the rear. im planning on going 20x10s in the front eventually, theres plenty of room there if i watch my ride height to turn.

somedays life gives you lemons, otherdays you get kicked in the cahones by an mma fighter....
today i started stripping the anodizing and polishing my trim, which went quite well. after lunch i thought id push the car out in the sun and snap a few pictures. no sooner did i get the car out in the sun than i realized my worst nightmares. the pearls are all cloudy down both sides of the car. if you look at the pictures where there are light and dark layers of different shades of primer, thats where all the pearls are goofy. apparently my sealer didnt work for me and the basecoats soaked or something. today felt like the worst day ever. on top of the paint being odd, well, i dont know what to do about a respray. i cant leave it how it is, its just not good enough for the work i put in. i dont have enough of the pearl to shoot it and the parts for the engine bay and interior pieces i wanna spray, and i doubt ill be able to mix it correctly since i didnt save the mix( because i mixed way more than should have been enough, even for a touch up, just not an overall touch up) so im starting to look at other color options.
anybody know of any good teal/aqua colors? im strongly considering bermuda blue metallic like was on alot of tahoes, avalanches and chevy pickups.
any suggestions id very much appreciate, im pretty much lost.

Sorry to hear this happened . Do you think you could bring a small panel to a paint dealer or body shop and see if they can check it. Maybe you could spray what you have on the outside and have them mix some for the inside where the difference might not be obivous ? I don't know if I amagining it but don't they have a scanner that can match paint ?

I don't know if I amagining it but don't they have a scanner that can match paint ?
well, most paint supply places have a scanner, but they scan and get the closest code that matches. since it was a custom mix, i doubt that theyll be able to get it close. i shouldve never mixed it the way i did but im young and dumb and now ive learned. an oem color wouldve been a smarter move from the start.

well, right now i have the whole car sanded down, minus the jambs and such. gunna blow it apart tomorrow to do the jambs, maybe ill have it ready to paint again this weekend, at the latest, ill have it sprayed by the end of the month.
i made the mistake of trying to go a little too wild with mixing crazy paint, which is probably beyond my skill level, my painting environment, and on top of that, had a chemical problem. i try my best to push myself to turn everything out as best as i can and improve my skills all the time, but sometimes i bite off more than i can chew.
thank you all for your support.

well right now, the car is about halfway sanded down with 180. why so heavy? well, i had it scuffed down, started reshooting it in a similar factory color and about 4 coats in, the son of a bitch lifted on me. so i stopped spraying, let it all dry and now im gunna have it sanded down hard (back to perfect) reprimed and shoot in either straight black, or some kind of black metallic. the color i had picked covered absolutely terrible! i was almost through a whole gallon and it was barely covering, and then it lifted and i decided enough was enough.
im keeping in high spirits though. even though im behind my intended schedule i realized that the last three months of bodywork are still way ahead of schedule compared to alot of guys on here and other places that i hear the cars are in a bodyshop for a year or more.

im trying my best to hang in there but im kinda getting a case of the ass of sanding this beast all the time.
im still not sure on what i want to paint this thing anymore. straight black is too much maintenance i think driving in in farm country all the time. so im looking around for a color that will work well and contrast with the brown interior and shadown gray frame and engine. any ideas are a big help!
Leadfoot1
04-03-2011, 01:45 PM
Something in the Charcoal line? It would do well with the frame and is easy maintenance and goes with anything interior wise... You can break it up with a stripe of your kind and choice at anytime if you want later down the road too....
Just an idea.
My hat is off to you for the perseverance (sp) my friend!!! And your way of seeing things is the good one!

finally something good to report!!!
i blocked the whole car down hard, started with 80, back up to 320 and reprimed. blocked it with 180, 320 and reprimed. blocked it 500, 800 this time wet and got her ready to shoot.
picked a color out of the book called sterling gray metallic, a ford color. i was actually looking for something more pewter, (like this looked in the book) but im happy now. just reshot her tonight and im thrilled with the results. the temperature was perfect, the color layed amazing, its clean and the clear layed flat enough to read text in a magazine off the reflection.
enough jibber jabber. sorry the photos arent the best just yet.

now we're getting somewhere.... got the front end together and put her on the ground!
all the fasteners for the sheetmetal and some of the others are stainless and polished before being put on the car. blacked out the front of the rad support so i would have a cleaner silhouette behind the all polished grille( when i get done with that.) all the trim on the car is original stuff that i stripped the anodizing off with acid, sanded and polished back out.

oh man i wish that was ride height, maybe if i had the money for a morrison chassis or something of the like. thats actually as low as it goes for now(its laying headers) till i get my buddy with his tig over to make some stainless headers. then hopefully i can get her down another inch or two and drive with it a little lower.
ride height just untucks the front wheel, gives decent header clearance and i can actually turn without the wheels hitting the fenders.

it doesnt look like much, but ive kept myself busy on this old girl. in the past few weeks i built the whole exhaust, 3" mandrel bends with dynomax race bullets that im hoping arent too obnoxious for long trips. i got just about all the plumbing done in -8 stainless braided, of which i stripped the anodizing off all the fittings and polished them out, i also built stainless rad hoses, which are of course, polished. this weekend my friend and i aligned the car, and i got a few more pieces painted. the trans tunnels been modified for the six speed, and i got about a third of the car buffed out too. i also got a bunch of the trim repaired and back on the car to boot.
ive also been really busy with my dads car, his 496 big block powered 66 chevelle. this winter he picked up a jeffco transmission, which is clutchless, and like a lenco has a lever for every gear. it is straightup badass. well, that transmission isnt shaped anything like the richmond 6 speed that is now in my car, so we had to make a few, er mild changes. the middle three feet of the floor was cut out and reshaped. a removeable tunnel was built, runners were ran on the frame for strength and an easier way for a tranny mount, new trans mount was built, new 4" exhaust was built that doesnt hang so low under the car and its got new carpet now and a new parking brake lever from lokar. it was an exhausting project, but we knocked the whole deal out in about 2.5 weeks.

Lead,
the hoses are just pieces of stainless tubing i got from columbia river mandrel bending. found here>>
http://www.mandrel-bends.com/catalog/?gclid=CLnuj6PTlakCFQMRNAodrzg_dA
the rubber sleeves that connect them are just silicone hoses that i also got from columbia river. i think jegs and summit also sells both of those items.
the jeffco is an unbelievable transmission, at WOT there simply is nothing cooler.
thanks to everyone who checked out my update and left comments, you guys keep me going and keep me pushing myself to get better.

well its been far far too long since my last update. ive been kinda treading water on it for a little bit, but im started to near the end. i had a couple "oops" deals when wetsanding and buffing so i had to touch them up and put on an additional three coats of clear to make sure it wouldnt happen again. finall got the car all buffed out and cleaned up. im pretty impressed with my garage paintjob. theres a few imperfections but in the sun it looks great. i started finishing up the hood and decided that a molded cowl would function and finish better then my homemade version, so i knocked that out( hood is currently in primer.) its a 3.5" harwood scoop. it looks big in the pictures being unfinished but in primer it kinda gets swallowed up by the cars massiveness. i finished the air cleaner assembly, it just needs buffed and striped. decided to add a little high tech to my rather old school car with some painted on carbon fiber look.( i just wanted to see if i could do it, havent decided if i should keep it or not). also got the wheelwells sprayed in bedliner, for protection and to have a nice backdrop for the wheels.

still at it. i have my own little sema thrash going to have the car done( or driveable and inspected) for my wedding on november 12. Im getting kinda frustrated with it lately, i look back at things i shouldve done and wanna change down the road, and im not even finished the first time.
what do you guys do in that situation? change it now, later, or just let it go? it always interests me how others go through build plans compared to me. id like to see how the pros do it, and the homebuilders who also turn out top notch stuff.
i got the hood done and on the car, needs a quick buff and some more time on the gaps. pretty much all i have to do before the wedding is get as much interior in as i can and get it running well.

so time for an update? i think so.
well since my last update: my wife and i got married in november( we actually moved into our house in august) and have since been busy with being a domesticated husband(ugh). but in all honesty, ive been spending alot of time with her getting moved in, and working on the house projects.
taught myself to drywall and finished the garage, so when the car is ready to come home (im hoping in a few weeeks) itll have a nice place to sleep.
besides that and the car which you'll see in a moment, ive been playing with nitro:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c23/dropthesixseven/IMAG0291.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c23/dropthesixseven/437.jpg
this is nitro, we got him in february and hes 8 months now, pure bread doberman( we decided against cropping his ears). hes a lot of work, but hes really an excellent dog.
ok now for the good stuff.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c23/dropthesixseven/490.jpg
my first cold air setup i built, was too low. i could not get the car to idle decent with it on the carb and decided to build a new one, with more taste, and it cured the problem. i didnt have enough room between the roof of the intake and the carb and mustve made turbulence and choked it off. now thats fixed. i molded the new one out of fiberglass.

been trying to get all the interior on the car done as well. took a few trys but i finally built some door panels that suit me, only thing i wanna do yet is pull the inserts out and sew some diamonds in them to go with the rest of the interior. the arm rests i got from fesler on there black friday sale and the cranks are from lokar( may change them to billet specialties later) i made a new dash panel out of fiberglass and wrapped it in vinyl instead of the wood attempt i had earlier, it just fits better, also cleaned up the wirings on the gauges as well. i started puttin the stereo togther, built a box for my two 15 inch re subs, and i built mini boxes for all my component speakers as well. i also picked up a 6.5 inch kenwood dvd/cd/nav/ head unit for it as well. ill try and get more pictures this weekend and get them up, but for now i thought id bring you all back up to speed.

ITS FINALLY ON THE ROAD!
its not totally finished, but i could really care less anymore. i got everything functioning for inspection, door panels finished, carb tuned up and ive made it to three shows so far this year.
i still gotta finish the headliner and put all that trim that goes with it, buy and install the window cranks (swore i had them somewhere but i guess those were the old set) i have to make a new carburetor hat too, i made the current one too low in hoping of getting a flatter hood on, but neither worked out, and it chokes the engine out. so at the moment i cruise with a regular air cleaner on and put the other on at shows. maybe ill stumble upon some money and go efi with a fabricated manifold to fix that too( wishful thinking)
I also have hubs and brackets to put 14 z06 rotors on the car, trying to find some used calipers if anybody has any, let me know! theyre pretty spendy new from a dealer. also, what are you guys running for rotors? i know the factory zo6 rotors rust up, whose rotors wont rust?
enough bla blah... heres how she looks at the moment.

The engine bay and intake look great. Good job on the car. Congrats on getting it on the road and good luck getting the rest finished up.

Love it! 67 has been my favorite since I was in high school in the 80s. Had a buddy with a 67 Caprice. Awesome cruiser. Missed out when he sold it. Later I found a 67 Impala and went to go buy it and the guy sold it 30 minutes before I showed up. Still would love to have one someday.
Yours looks absolutely killer! Stance, engine bay etc, just cool. Looking forward to further updates!

Nice. The car turned out great. All the trials you went thru with paint, the hood, etc paid off. Congratulations.
Any pics of the audio set up?
