Thought I would share the build of Project TimeWarpf100

This is a dream truck from a "Dream" that will be 45yrs old tomorrow when my dad pulled into the driveway with a brand new 1966 F100! Even though I was only 8yrs old It was love at first look...

In 1978 I bought a 1967 Mercury Capri with a Factory 425hp 427 & a 4spd with only 12k miles on the clock. It was then I thought some day I want a BRAND NEW 1966 F100 powered by a Dual Quad 427 Side Oiler.

Since tomorrow is 45yrs to the day when I fell in love with the 66 F100 body style, I thought it would be as good of a time as any to share my build of it.

This started out a a very very nice unmolested Arizona Short Bed Custom cab in a very rare Orange/White 2-tone.

Once it was torn down it was time to make carts for the cab and box to make moving them around and blasting etc a bit easier

Took a Cobra Jet C-6 out of the cobwebs and started a rebuild. Had an "ISSUE" with the trans case because someone put a bottle jack under it to "LIFT" the car. A quick weld job and back at it.

A Yukon Gear Posi unit was added to the 9" rear supporting the stock 3:50 gear set

What type of stripper did you use on the paint/body?

Been using the same stuff for approx 32yrs now!

Aircraft Remover by Klean Strip. They make both spray can and quarts/gallons. I normally keep some spray around but does not work as good.

That hood was ONE application of the stripper in approx 20min time.

The key is to not move it/brush it around much. Best is to pour and let run down saving what runs off and using it again. If its brushed on very thin it will take more applications. Pour it on without brushing on a vertical surface and it will start to peel within minutes. If many layers of paint and bondo it will take a few applications.

Key is to neutralize it with soapy water (Ivory Liquid) and a scotch bright before priming etc. Once surface is stripped and clean I then use a PPG metal conditioner to scrub the metal again prior to paint/primer. The metal conditioner also keeps it from surface rusting.

I also stripped the inside of fenders, the door jambs and cab floor along with underside were also sand blasted. The carts made blasting a breeze.

I use engine stands with a special attachment for the doors where I can have them stand up normal turn them around or even lay them flat for blocking. A fender stand was also made and fenders will pretty much stay there until complete, sanded, buffed and ready to go on. I do all the blocking, work, prime and paint on the stands.

Great styling during those years and you certainly have a solid truck to start with it appears.

What kind of mods are you doing to the suspension?

I will pick n' file and work the metal then apply the epoxy primer.

If there is a portion thats impossible to get straight I add a bit of old tyme lead work... and pick and file some more. Self taught but I get by... My style and technique is not like the pro's but gets the job done instead of farming anything out. I just do what works for me.

After metal prepped prior to the first primer.

Metal turns a blue/gold and no white in color then I know its ready.

TimeWarpF100
10-09-2010, 08:46 PM
I then apply a few coats of "blocking" primer and sand until the fingertips are raw! Those nook and crannies underneath are torture. Of course a bit of guide coat is put on top and bottom in and out first. Once sanded smooth I apply another shot of primer and block all over again..... When happy I finally quit the priming and apply tinted sealer and paint...

Absolutely Love it. I've been following your thread over on GJ and I can't get enough. I've learn a bunch from your thread. I'm still curious as to what your "Magic Soap" is.. Keep up the great build. You sure don't see many of these side oilers. Also did you fabricate the stand that you have your fenders on?

THANKS! The Magic Soap is a cleaner that I mix up that works nothing like anything else I have tried. The materials are getting hard to buy because of government regulations. The only way I can buy the things to mix together now is truck freight which is quite costly. I will be sharing as soon as I can get more of the materials.

Yes, I built the fender stand, the box and cab stands along with the attachments for door/engine stands. The fender stand comes apart so I can slide it under a workbench etc when not in use. More updates soon.

I have a 2nd Side OIler under the bench I will most likely sell soon.

Going on 4yrs since I gave an update.

Still have the project which has been sitting and just collecting dust for the 4yrs. Moved 3 times in 9 months with all my stuff plus a illness.

I have finally gotten to point where I have it back in shop now vs storage.

Slow going but have made a bit of progress over past month or two.

I was able to replace the box floor and make some new pieces for the 4 corners of box. Still needs a bit more welding and grinding then will be ready for primer. Many months to just get that much done. Box sat in middle of shop floor for a couple years waiting.

back to the 427 truck.
When I moved I dropped on the front clip to help with damage issues in shipping across country.

These were taken a few weeks ago. I have since pulled the front clip and started to build headers for it.

The truck I posted prior pics of is now on road driving but still needs paint.

Simply did not have the funds for a custom chassis so just bought a new F150 chassis from ford with closest W.B. to stock truck. Had to paint it as looked pretty rough straight from dealer.

Like I did not have enough to do already. Started yet another 1966 Truck project . . This time a 1966 F250 Ranger. (Ultra rare factory bucket seats)

This truck is getting a 2015 3.5 EcoBoost and a 6R80 6 spd auto. Its from a 4x4 prototype truck. It was all donated so could not resist . . Low enough miles it had not had its first oil change yet.

This truck will be the sleeper hot/rod of the bunch and a slow progression of upgrades. Total stock appearing interior and exterior except for a custom gauge package to work with the late model engine/trans

Thanks! Continued health issues have really put a damper on getting much done but a few updates since last post.

I finished Eco1 project except paint. Put on 11,000 miles in 2017 then sold it late in year to allow me to finish other projects.

Far too many things to do for a old fart but here is a current one.

540" Twin Turbo Boss9 for another truck project.

A custom one off set as I changed bolt pattern so I could order the wheels I wanted/dreamed about.

These chassis have a lot of heavy crossmembers. At only 600 HP It should work well. Main purpose will not be AutoCross.

Eco1 I did have a fully boxed chassis but it was all late model stuff

My other Current engine build of 1500+ HP I will for sure need a more stout chassis . . but it too will be a daily driver.

Now that truck has great brakes, good tires it’s time
To make it handle a bit better so when a corner is attempted
Over 15 mph it doesn’t roll over n play dead.
Trying to find a OEM type sway bar to work but it would be
Just that. A sway bar so:

Decided to just build my own sway bar system exact for my application!
Let the fun begin to get that done...

(good to have older brother who is suspension engineer)
I am sure it’s been done a million times trying
To make a twin I beam handle decent but will see where this goes.

Few questions asked:
1) diameter of spring outside
2) diameter of spring wire size
3) number of coils
4) tire track width
5) I beam pivot point to king pin center
6) distance between I beam pivot points
7) distance from end link mount to center of bar
8) distance from frame to inside tire at full turn
)9 distance from front of crossmember to most forward part bar will fit
10) center distance of the 2 I beam mounting points.

How is it tested? Certain RPM?

After tech, before driver's meeting...they take all of those needing sound testing over to road course and have them run by the sound meter on e at a time at speed.

I've never been over there when they do it, but I think they give them time to get into second gear and at full throttle before they go by the meter.

Pass and you get a sticker in your driver's door, fail and they park you for the day.

I am as shocked as my friends. The dual quad 427 was a 40+ yr dream

I started to think what it would be like to have a late model engine in this truck
That would have equal power but other than oil changes maintenance free
The new Gen3 5.0 Coyote engines with a 10 spd auto sounded good.

I decided to list the 427 on Craigslist for 48 hours at a price I could install the
Coyote and have $$ left to finish other projects. I know, I know a total
Dream.... until someone stopped by and actually bought the 427!

So, Engine is out & sold, front clip off truck then it sinks in how much more work it’s going to be to get truck back on road.

Having done 3 EcoBoost swaps into pickups the Coyote should be a no~Brainer. ALthough I have not done any coyote swaps I cannot imagine it being more difficult than doing a ecoboost swap.

HA! I cannot believe I did that either! Waited 40+ yrs for that exact engine combo. Problem is I gained 40+ yrs too. I loved it actually, nothing like a big inch engine with a solid roller cam and great sounding exhaust that was music to my ears. But, wife did not like it at all and each time it needed a bit of adjustment she would say why don't you just sell the truck!

To please her I listed the engine on CraigsList to say here I am trying to sell the engine! Problem is that idea backfired and the engine sold!

So here I am starting all over again . .

Speaking with the "Pro's" like Power by the hour they said they were not aware of ANY Gen3 10 speed swaps done so looks like once again I will be a sucker to try to make it all work. Knees already knocking just thinking about it but in the end I think I will be much happier and the wife a BUNCH happier with a late model engine. I just will not tell her I plan on adding a SuperCharger just to make it more HP than the 482. With proper mods and tuning I am sure the Gen3 Coyote would make equal or more but who wants equal?

HUGE FE fan since late 1965 and even more so in 1972 when I worked on my first one. Then stepped it up in 1978 when I bought my first dual quad 427 car with a 4spd. (One of only 6 built)

But now that the years are piling on the wife deserves as much enjoyment as I get out of it. I am hoping the Gen3 Coyote 10 spd auto with or without the SuperCharger will make the truck that much more enjoyable on trips over 25 miles each way then stopping to fill the tank . . . Wife being a accountant she was not at all impressed with the 50 cents per mile just for fuel.

Like most of my projects this will be a HUGE undertaking. In search of proper donor now. May have found it but I have a actual "Budget" to do the swap so will see how that goes.

Thanks! Huge turn of events . . . I still cannot believe I sold the 427.

I got tired of the BS on facebook.
I do have instagram where I post most often

https://www.instagram.com/ecoboostf100/?hl=en

At this time I am trying to find the replacement for the 427.

I am in process of building a 410 FE its slightly possible that may replace it. a very basic engine with no upgraded heads, roller cam etc. A very basic no big bucks stuff.

What I really want to drop in is a Gen3 Coyote 10 spd auto with a SuperCharger. Finding proper donor truck is the hard part.

In a pinch I may go with a 2018 & newer 3.5 Eco & 10 spd auto but have done 3 ecoboost swaps already so not my first choice. I can easily get 500 RWHP out of one and still get great MPG.

Will see what becomes avail over next 30 days or so. Have bids in on a few different ones including a 2017 6.7 Diesel.

The 540" Twin Turbo Boss 429 I am building belongs to a friend, would love to have that but way out of my pay grade.

I started on the 2.7 Swap into the 1966 F-100 4x4 Christmas time but so much else to get done. Doing a major cab off, full engine rebuild, new transmission, big brake upgrade, new suspension on a '01 Lightning. Once its done I will get back on the 2.7 Swap. Hopefully by end of this month.

I will be using very minimal Electronics in the 2.7 Swap. Enough to make it drive but plan on using the Electronic Locking Diff, the electronic park brake and the 4x4 of course. I may add cruise control but it will be a pretty basic swap. Hoping it to be a daily driver and will be used as a truck.

I currently have Seven (7) different 1966 Trucks in various stages and the garage is so packed with junk and truck parts its hard to get anything done.

Way too much for a one man band old guy . .

I post mostly on Instagram under ecoboostf100

At minimum you will need PCM, BCM & ignition /keys along with engine and transmission wiring. One can use a aftermarket or OEM instrument cluster. Oem one can be modified to fit about anything.

Of course one can have the PATS turned off.

I change my mind like the midwest weather changes. Minute by minute

One day it's a FE the next a Gen3 Coyote 10 spd then its a Gen2 Eco 10spd then back to a FE.

I was certain I was going late model but after not finding anything thought maybe FE. UNTIL, I started to count the $$ to stick with a pretty basic FE. I actually made a very large purchase of aftermarket heads, Edelbrock Plo Flow 4 until I realized I was sent the wrong heads. I just do not want to dump 10k in a very basic FE. I already have 2 FE 1966 Trucks with 2 more FE's under the bench & one at machine shop.

Today I have absolutely no clue which way to go. I thought the FE would be a quick easy swap but finding a machine shop to get er' done not so easy.

What year is the Coyote you have in the '56? Any pics?

I made a offer on a Gen3 Coyote/10spd Auto (10R80) will see what they say on Monday.

Just a pretty basic FE nothing special Current Aluminum heads, basic machine work with a 428 Style crank along with EFI and a Overdrive Trans is around 15k! No way no how will I spend that much on a dinosaur engine. Just sold a even more expensive one so not going to repeat.

So many people doing Coyote swaps wanted to do something different but what is currently avail for power and reliability they are hard to beat. Just a bit pricey . .

TimeWarpF100
09-16-2019, 11:32 PM
I started to build another FE this time a 410 and after getting the runnaround from shop for 6 months I found that not only did the shop ruin one block but all 3 blocks I had left! Since they were my last 3 FE blocks I finally threw in the towel on a FE.

I had spent a half fortune on a new Gear Vendors, New Transmission and a custom converter, and so much more.

I bought a 2018 F150 with 5.0 Coyote 10 spd with 9k miles but truck had such minimal damage I fixed it in just a couple days to the point one could not tell where damage was. Loved the truck but the low end power was nothing like my experience with the 3.5 Eco. Having already installed 3 different Eco engines really wanted to go the 5.0 Route.

I heard rumblings that Ford Performance had 5 2018-19 Raptor 450 HP
510 TQ crate engines. After a bit of research I was able to buy #4 of the only 5 sold.

So the plan once again changes to the Raptor crate engine and a 10 spd auto.

These engines will put down 490 RWHP with just a tune. Truck being down 6 months so far am getting tired of it sitting.

TimeWarpF100
09-16-2019, 11:36 PM
So much for the 5.0 Idea! Was willing to run one if I could do it with 10spd auto but it just never came to be. Not only that but it's what so many others are doing. The cost of making a 5.0 Run with the Eco is probably 7000.00

If interested I would consider selling my 2.7 conversion. Just too many irons in the fire. The 2.7 is in truck and I have had it running. It was meant to be just engine and transmission and maybe keep the TPMS. Rest would remain as is.

Good luck! This is a great project.

Thanks much!

Mostly have all core support, inner fenders fitted. Not much room underhood as engine is very tall because of all the turbo plumbing.
Also had to rotate battery 90 deg to clear radiator. Not a lot of room to fit Battery Junction Box, Pcm and all the wiring. Already had to make harness out of OEM 2018-20 F150 and too much work to try to make each wire perfect length and to put components in different location. Installing those components where wire length will allow. That’s stock F150 location.
No kits avail for the dual fuel system 3.5 EcoBoost.

Now it will take a lot of metal finish work to pretty up the sheet metal.

Few goals:
600 HP 600TQ @ tire on E50 (pump gas here)
25 MPG @ 65 mph
11.50 or better 1/4 mi at 120+ mph 1/4
900 mi per fuel fill
Would love to see 100 mph in 1/8 but don’t think enough power for that!

As in photo I added a 16:1 Redhead steering box.
I wanted to keep the Twin I Beam suspension so can only go so low
On ride height. No way was I going CRown Vic stuff.
No $$ for full chassis from RS.

As a stock 2018 Raptor owner, beyond the garret intercooler, what other upgrades are you making to achieve the great power and MPG goals? Maybe it's time to spend more time on the fordraptorforum as I average 15mpg and no where close to that power...

thanks.

Performance wise it should be 2200 lb less than typical Raptor. That should also help MPG somewhat too. MPG wise it will need to be on 91 Octane numbers drop fair amount on E50.

Big difference for HP numbers (at least noticeable) Is my tire wheel package is under 50 lb per corner while Raptor wheel/tire typical is over 100 lb.

Will not know until I try though as think the 9" Ford axle uses more hp than the 9 3/4" Raptor version.

Huge disappointment if it does not make at least 500 RWHP on 91.

Only mods from stock are minimal each. More of a direct Ram Air for airbox, Big change in exhaust that is very similar to the 2021 Raptor. Garrett says only around 13 hp gain from cooler although here it may be more in hot summer but again I have no clue about airflow through engine bay.

I have seen other trucks make 575 at tire so figured a 25 gain with just the 1/2 weight tire wheel combo. Gearing may make a diff too. I can also run in 7th gear which is 1-1. My tire height is only 27" and am running 3.50 rear gearing.

If I look at what my other eco swap truck did it ran 13.0 @ 105 with base engine and tune only it made 420 RWHP and track weight was 4750 lb that truck I had to leave at idle or it would just spin. Much better and larger tires on this one. Adding 150hp and taking away 800+ lbs of weight should get me to 11.50's. If It will make 600 RWHP and I can get it to hook and leave on boost it may net me a 10 second quarter mile. Not sure how the engine will hold up to that HP level (Pistons/Rods) All I want is a long distance cruiser that has acceptable performance, MPG and long distance cruising. Truck looks decent and is reliable.

So goals are from past experience with ecoswap. I think just the tire size alone will be huge for MPG, weight and other factors should be huge too.

Is your Raptor around 40 mph per 1000 RPM? Mine should be 36 mph per 1000 RPM.

65 mph cruise should be around 1800 rpm

Taller final gearing, bunch more weight, huge tires combo and a much much larger truck. Will soon find out I guess! What ever it is will not be the 6 mpg I was getting with the BBF.

For distance I will have 46 gallons of fuel capacity and at only 20 mpg its 920 miles cruise per fill.

Cool on the F100's! I hope to be out there too!
I have owned at least 6 Crown Vic/Grand Marquis and they were more mushy suspensions although anything can be made to work. I think they are kinda cool but not something I would consider on one of my own trucks although did install a narrow version in a friends truck with coil overs etc.

I might be surprised to find a CV equipped truck running away from my Twin I Beam setup. But the Twin I Beam was engineered in the early 60's and is still in use by ford today on some applications. (I Beam less known for handling than the CV setup)

Would be exciting to test it at AMP. My current setup/combo has never been done before so who knows what will happen. Although I want to do some track days the truck is being built for Long Distance Cruising. I think better suited for long tracks.

Found this online. If this is any indication if my truck will hook up it is possible to run 10's in quarter mile. Typical weight for a Raptor tire wheel is 100 lb per corner. Mine are under 50 lb per corner. 100 Less lb of rotating mass should make noticeable difference not to mention the Tire diameter. Excited but only bench racing guesstimates at this point. The 2200 lb weight difference should be huge also.

Just a few miles shy of 4000 now!

It's total banana's on E51. Base tune was 603hp and 658TQ at tire and that was limit found where PCM was closing the throttle! LOL

Thanks! Can't wait for final tune!
Tuner wants WOT in 3rd from 2000-6000 problem is It still wants to spin in 7th

Add some fuel in rear tank, let out some air from tires then see which gear I can do a 2000-6000 rpm pull in.

Will have to have the dragy in too. See if it will run 100 mph in 1/8 th

With a 3.50 gear in diff and a low 27" tall tire add in the 4.69 1st gear and even with power in 1 & 2nd dialed back it's still a handful.

1966 N700 CrewCab

Built by Louisville KY truck plant june 1966 for the Northern Pacific Railway for use as a high rail truck. Dump bed too.

I found it hiding behind this chicken shed where it sat at least 31 yrs. Bringing it back to life.

Although a bunch more costly decided to go original vs taking cab and dropping on something else ruining the Railroad history at same time.

For well over 30 yrs the decal on door was covered in white paint protecting it from the elements. I was able to figure out how to remove white paint revealing the mint decal underneath.

Long history this truck has.

Truck update
Have driven 8000 miles in past year. All over Arizona and trip
To Southern California.

If I put a bit of a tune to it showed to make 603hp and 658tq to tire and that was restricted by the PCM power management closing throttle.
Without question the tq would have shot past 700 if PCM had not taken over. It also did a big restriction on the HP both midrange and top end.

660 lb ft of tq by 3000 RPM is pretty nuts but fun!

The 10 Spd automatic does wonders for it also.

On the trip to california we got caught in some very very heavy headwinds and we were running 75-80 mph. Drove to Southern Cal then put on 135 miles while there which was 505 miles by the time we got to car show then were able to drive all the way back home on a single fill of fuel.

19.5 for the first 505 miles mostly because of speed and heavy winds but were rewarded on way home with 24.8 mpg as slowed it to 65 mph or less just to make round trip not having to add fuel. Overall average was 22.0 mpg

Holey cow! Congrats on the sale.

At least a couple of bidders must have really dug into all the fantastic work you put into that truck.

What's next? That cabover?
