Well after being on this site for the past few years I have gained quite a few great friends from all over the country. I have also been doing some online racing on a site called Iracing.com. Well they now have a way were you can host a race and have a password to enter. So I have been talking to some people about just having a regular league racing night maybe once a week. So here we go.

Now to do this your would have to be a member of Iracing, which is 12.95 a month. Tell them I sent you. [email protected]. You will need a steering wheel and break pedal setup. Logitech G25 or G27 would good units to get used off ebay. And a gaming style headset to be able to chime in and Talk. Or in some cases smack talk. If 60 people show up to race they will post 60 cars on the grid.

I'm thinking about racing the FR500 mustang at Lime rock and Laguna Seca for the first few weeks. I will sponsor the money to host the race, 3 whole dollars :unibrow: :unibrow: . The winner each week can brag online.

This is to have fun with the great friends we have all met on this site. Sure it is still about the win, but don't worry if you you lack talent. Shoot I think you can sign up and just spectate if you wanted.

SO who is in.

Here is a practice lap from Road Atlanta in the Mustang.

It is alot of fun. I have been racing for almost 2 years. You can go in at 9pm and race in a 30 lap race with guys from all over the world. This is not a video game, there no cheesy nitrous or short cuts. You have to fine tune your set up which can be complex and adjust the car for different surfaces and tracks. The mustang is pretty simple. There are ton of tracks and cars for beginner to very advanced. The C6r Is one of my favorite, but man is that thing a handful.

I figure this would be more fun for just the hangin out aspect then the who really gets first place. But there are some guys on this site that are pretty fast on there.

This is way better the GT5. You actually have to get the set up right to really be able to keep up with the fast guys. Plus the side by side action is really fun.

This looks like it's up my alley, I have friends that do the online NASCAR deal, but I have never been a fan. I'll check it out and start looking for a wheel.

Ordered a G27 on Amazon --- $219 should have it in a couple days. I'll sign up for the iRacing thing when I get home. Then it's SHOW TIME!

Tracy -- I'm lik'n' your wall technique! EEEEEEHHHHHHHAAAAAAAA

I just hope my connection speed in the shed is going to allow me to race from out there. That connection is a wifi - via an antenna - to the wifi in the house... So I'm going wifi to a repeater - to an antenna - to another wifi via another antenna. If it doesn't work I'll just have to take over the TV room. LOL

Do we really need talking things? I saw a headphone set with a mic when I ordered the G27? Also -- I noticed they offered a "stick shift holder" for the GameSeat chair --- should I have ordered that too? Are you guys using stick shifts?

ironworks
08-31-2010, 04:29 PM
The mic is fun to chit chat, but maybe it would be better if you did not have one Greg. I don't use the stick shift, I use the paddle shift on the steering wheel. My gaming table is kinda weak and I thought the shifter seemed flimsy

I was going to use a 42" HD plasma I have out in the shed... and need a computer - so wasn't sure if a medium speed version with a high tech video graphics card is "great" --- or if you need the whiz bang gaming computer.

THOSE PEDALS ARE OMG!!

Love that!

Count me in on a weekly league. As a suggestion, could we run some of the unused track configurations, like Watkins Glen Classic or Road Atlanta Short. Neither of those are scheduled for the series I run in, so I'm more curious than anything.

IMO that machine would be overkill for a single monitor. A decent CPU matched with a 5770 or up ATI graphics card will support triple monitors. I run a 5770 with triple 22"s at 5040x1050 on an $800 Core2Duo workstation. I wouldn't trade the wider field of view of three monitors for any single screen.

Single-Monitor View (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itQfYkR7x2g) vs. Triple-Monitor View (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fYwEj0bQBE)

Lino, welcome to the site. All of us need to race the track you know the least about. Or figure out how to chain your car to Greg's car with all those phone books to help slow you down.

Well guys I think we are up to 8-10 people so far. Since most are west coast at this point, except Tracy Weaver. I'm thinking about running Monday night at say 6:30 pacific. We will have maybe a 1/2 hour to hour practice session, with 2 laps of qualifiying and maybe a 15-20 lap main event. The starting order will be inverted. The fast guys have to make it through the field from the back. Sand baggers will be make fun of to no end online. The winner of the race has to share his setup with the rest of the field.

We also had the idea of doing a 5 lap demo derby just for fun. You just have to make your car last for 5 laps. But top qualifiers go to the front. But hopefully you have enough speed to get far enough away to not get pounded in turn one.

So far Tracy Weaver in Nebraska s the farthest away and he is 2 hours ahead. I'm pretty sure it will take him a few weeks to get online, since he has to put windows on his MAC to race with us. 730 is great time for me. That's 9:30 at Tracy's house.

6:30pm is kinda pushing it for me too.

Rodger: Does it let you run a long qualifying session, like around 20-30 minutes? I know thats more than the proposed two laps, but a 7pm open qualifying session could serve as a warm-up/B.S session before a 7:30pm race.

ironworks
09-02-2010, 11:53 AM
Maybe we can host a race this weekend to see exactly all the options. I have seen 20 minute qualifying sessions. We will have to research the options before next week.

I'm good with 7:30 for a 30-45 qualifying session and 8:15 for a 15 lap race.

ATI Eyefinity needs at least one DisplayPort monitor to work. They do make active DVI-to-DisplayPort adapters, but when the 5XXX-series cards were first released the active adapters weren't very reliable. Some worked, some didn't. ATI releases new drivers every couple of months, so I'm not sure if it is still a problem. I opted to go with a couple of Dell P2210's (native DisplayPorts) to go with my 22" AOC. The AOC and one Dell are hooked up through DVI and the other Dell uses the DisplayPort.

Do some reading at www.widescreengamingforum.com (WSGF).

Well... after typing the first part of this post, a quick visit to WSGF has informed me that ATI just released a $30 DVI-to-DisplayPort adapter. Problem solved.

I think so. I just went to a headset a few weeks ago and you can hear much more. Plus the volume of the chatters and the car can be balanced. you can turn the chatter up and turn the master volume up or down.

Dave Tell Jason to bring it on.

But with all the fancy equipment you can really turn it up. When you upload Iracing it will naturally turn your settings on to what your computer can handle.

I just watched Rodger's 4:15pm Mustang race. Awesome race!

For those that don't know, iRacing also lets you live spectate other sessions that are running including practice and races.

Recap:
Rodger started 15th on the grid and over 30 laps had worked through the field up to 5th and was making pass attempts for 4th place for three consecutive laps. Yeah, I was cheering him on at home. The pinnacle of the race was a lap 29 pass attempt at turn one. Good run off the last turn, outbraked the 4th place car, but ended up putting two wheels off and spinning, taking both cars out of the race. Great run, tons of fun just watching.

Rodger, I saw you ran a hosted session the other night. Apparently I'm not very good at guessing passwords. Was it posted in this thread?

You would have to sign up and pay the monthly money, but just not race. So I guess 12 bucks a month does it.

After a few laps last night with Bob in a Qualifying session I improved my personal Best in the Solstice from 157.?? to 151.9. Yeah I guess I have learned a few things since I used to race the Solstice. But I think Lino is going to bring the Heat tonight. I thought 1:59 at laguna was fast with the Solstice. Then saw Rogers time and I just knew I had to go faster. Got down to 1:55.4 then Roger shows up at a Qualifying race and Runs a low 1:51. Damn him!! It did push me to go even faster got it down to a 1:54.0

This is very addicting.

I'm sure that is a big HAIR. I raced the Solstice last night and was only in the high 52's. Lagauna is so long it is hard to keep it together. But I did end up with a 3rd in a high strength field.

Thats what makes it a challenge. A race is 12 laps and keeping it together for twelve laps is hard. I did have 3rd place finish. I was even pole position on one race but staying in first when there are guys bumping you is hard.

I ran a best of 1:49.04, but still was not the fastest in the practice session. The other guy just edged me out of the top spot with a 1:48.98. But get this... the fastest lap at Laguna in the Solstice for this 2010 Season 3 was a 1:46.2. !!??? Never fails, just when think you're going 10/10ths, someone else comes along and makes you look slow. This fuels the addiction. :)

HUH???

Eight cars on the track. 5 of them were in a group all drafting each other. 1 of them forgot their driving talent taking 4 cars out.

Its amazing how much chassis stuff you can change with these cars in this iracing simulator. I get in the practice session with stock set up. I can only go around the track at 175 mph and im bouncing off rev limiter.
Lino tell me to change the rear wing and rear end gears. Come back out and Im going 193 mph. Then this guy Mark comes in and he gives us a whole new chassis setup and we were going 197 and it was easier to get around the track. The whole drafting thing is pretty cool. You can feel it when you go in and out of it.
Had a blast last night.

yeah I spun on the pace lap to much torque in the corvette in low gear.
But atleast i didn't spin out as much as you did. I mean come on there is no icy patch on the track at Daytona. It is in Florida you know.

It seemed like every couple laps you were spinnin out in the same spot.

To go fast at Summit Raceway it is a pretty loose track. You go full throttle for most of the track and slam on the brakes in 2 turns and throttle steer the rest I believe. I have not raced the mustang on this track yet.

I hope you weren't watching my two crappy races. You should have watched last night. Second through fourth place within .5 of each other the whole 21 laps. I finally got passed with like three laps to go and took 4th.

But yeah, the Mustang only really turns if you're lightly trailbraking or when you're on the throttle. You pretty much drift it through the last S section before the last turn onto the straight.

Besides, driftin' is MAD TIGHT YO!

That is about what it was last night Greg in what they call week 13. In Week 13 which is the end of a season they do a fun for all. They let the lower rated guys drive the big Horsepower cars against any one willing to race and have a huge turn out. There are no license requirements and it does not affect your safety rating. So last night in race one at Watkins glen I'm driving the radical which is a 300hp go kart basically with a bunch of guys also driving the C6R also. It is mixed class racing. Well we started the race with 56 cars and had a huge pile up in Turn one. Thank God I started in the back and knew turn one is always a mess so I let the idiots drive right off the cliff. Well I finished the 15 lap race in 8th place and got 3rd in class.

Bob told me last we that next week at SEMA Iracing will have booth at the event. I say we have some kind of competition on who can set the fast time for each day. Sorry Bob they don't run the slow cars for the DEMO. :( :(

If they let Greg drive he will have to sit on somebodies lap and they will have to press the pedals for him.

In addition to the normal spring rates, anti-roll bars, and ride height adjustments: three downforce trim levels before making finer angle adjustments, corner springs, heave rate springs, ballast, brake bias, brake pressure, corner dampers and heave dampers, inerters (???), differential preload, engine braking, engine power (to adjust fuel consumption), throttle response curve. I quit reading at that point.

Here's a link to an article about iRacing that Sports Illustrated ran last December.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/bruce_martin/12/21/iracing/index.html

In the last year I have ran races or practice sessions with quite a few real-life professional, national champion, and amateur drivers from Nascar Sprint Cup, SCCA Spec Miata and Skip Barber, and karting. I find it really cool to be able to test your skills against nationally recognized drivers.

Generally I've found that if a driver is fast in real life they are also fast in the sim. I believe this is due to iRacing doing an excellent job of duplicating the physics of the vehicle and the accuracy of the track models. One of the drivers that ran the iRacing Mustang series this last season, was top qualifier in a couple of the real-life GrandAm races last year. Typically, he's quite a bit faster than the rest of the field, with only a small group of iRacers globally that run similar times. Racing with and being able to analyze replays of professional drivers definately helps to figure out what you're not doing quite quite right and where to pick up a few tenths.

You can get a Logitech Driving Force GT at just about any electronics or department store for about $100. It's a good entry level force feedback wheel, but the two-pedal set isn't all that spectacular.
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/gaming/wheels/devices/4172

From there you can step up to a Logitech G27 for about $300. Larger wheel, better pedals with a clutch and H-pattern shifter.

iRacing is running a special right now; three months for I think $12.

I run H-pattern manual with a clutch pedal normally. But, you can choose to have it auto-clutch. Most wheels will have a shift knob and paddles, so you can pick either.

Since I'm getting ready to build myself a new computer, what do I need to know to get for it to get the best experience?

Here's a link to the posted system requirements.
http://www.iracing.com//membership/system-requirements/

Triple monitors are highly recommended to increase your peripheral vision. It's a lot easier to race clean in traffic without guessing where the car is next to you.

I'm running a Core2Duo E8400 3.0Ghz, 5GB ram, ATI 5770, with three 22" monitors. My system is kinda borderline for running triple monitors. Frame rates range from 45-75 at 5040x1050. Single monitor resolutions with this hardware combo easily outputs over 100fps.

I just picked up the Williams last night. That's funny, I had the exact same feeling that the track was small. It's real easy to over drive this car, meaning going too deep into the corner. You lose lots of time by braking too late, missing the apex, and then getting back on the throttle late. If you can't turn in enough to get to the apex, back up your braking point. Slow in fast out is very important. Trail braking and throttle are the only way to get this thing to turn.

For set up I've been running pretty soft for more grip; soft front bar and no rear bar on most tracks and ride height pretty high to take some curb without upsetting the car.

Are you running the Mustang series this season?

im running the Mustang now with the new License.
I already did 2 races at Watkins Glen with it. I have been trying to trail brake but its feels weird in this car.

I'm running the Mustang in Grand Am this season and both series are at Miami Homestead this week. You're gonna hate the track this week. It's got one of those crappy, unstable, Turn 1 braking zones just like Daytona.

Maybe we can save Rodger $3 and just jump into uncrowded practice sessions.

Can he race in the grand am practice session? I think the license is different for the mustang class and the grand am. I'm down for a practice session. I have been out of the drivers seat since last Monday night. I have a few nights this week to race and then I'm on the road for 10 days back east.

I can't race in the Grand Am. I need a B or C license.
I saw homestead was a track this week. I tested it out last night for about 20 minutes. my time was a 1:32.xx I don't like the track and not a big fan of the car either.

Lets do a practice session.

Mustang Cup practice is fine. I'll run Grand Am traffic sessions later this week. I scratched my setup from last season and started over with the baseline. Got it down to a 1:28.6 so far. And yeah, this track sucks. The lack of reference points makes it really tough to be consistent.

The mustang cup.... Well I can't run my Riley Prototype. I'm having fun with tha car. How long are the Homestead sessions this week. I would like to get a race or 2 in before friday. I had worked my way up to 9th in the standings. Last time I raced.

You could host a multiclass practice race. Probably get some takers since there aren't Grand Am races until tomorrow and Thursday.

We could do the Mustang at VIR. Its this weeks track.
I have never raced on it yet. Could make for some good laughs.

How about a single car model on a small track to keep the racing kinda close even if we have a small turn out.

MX-5 Cup or Advanced Legends at one of the short tracks like VIR South Course or Patriot, or Barber Short B. The Barber track looks pretty easy to learn and has a nice straight, so I have somewhere to pass you slower drivers.

ironworks
12-13-2010, 05:19 PM
I will figure out something different. I hate driving some of the slower cars, It chances my reflexes from the DP car. Maybe the F-1 at VIR.... HMMM

I bet Bob can't keep that on the track. But the S's in the F-1 would be fun.

i tried the f1 at vir. Your right can't keep the car on the track.

So where are we at tonight? I have been racing the street stock on the short track. It is a fixed setup and lots of fun. Way better then the legend car.

I pull off a 4th place finish last night. That Oval stuff is tricky for just turning left.

I just found something interesting.

MX5 cup car race at Limerock.

Rodger 1:01.005
Lino 1:00.253

ME 1:00.019

You guys need to step up your game, cause now I have nothing to shoot for.

Alright MX 5 at Limerock. You will have to report back about the beat you will get.

I'm going start early.

Rodger

Lino is fast. He got in the 59.9 second range.
Rodger needs more time in the Mazda, he was in the 1:00.750 range.
I tried as hard as I could, the best I could do was a 1:00.033.

I wish we had more lat-g guys involved, its a blast.

Driving that Mazda develops bad habits in my Prototype racing. But last night was fun. That car is completely the opposite of what I usually run. Power, speed, braking, Sex appeal.

01-04-2011, 12:33 PM
As soon as I get my next license, I'll race grand am with you and Lino.
Im only .5 away on my SR. But I was so close a couple weeks ago with only needing .05. I did find out in the forums that when your that close you should just do time trials and qualifying sessions to get what you need.
Cause as I've learned if some one hits you, your score takes a hit.

Nice drivin' last night Bob. But, I'm starting to think you had a ringer run laps while you chatted. :D

96z28ss
01-04-2011, 04:10 PM
You can tell the laps when I was talking. I don't think I talked that lap. I tried to talk only on the straights, cause i always ran into trouble in the corners while talking.
Where do you have your chat button? Mine is the lower right hand button on the g27 wheel.

Psydwaze
01-05-2011, 03:35 PM
Mine's mapped to the left steering wheel button on my G25. I have trouble hitting my marks if people are chatting during a race, let alone trying to talk myself.

Promotions are coming up in a few weeks. Did you get your safety rating up high enough yet?

I'm trying but I run into a bit of bad luck every other race.
Last night before racing I had an sr of 2.49. I get in a race (MX5 at Laguna)without qualifiy.
Started 12th last place, by lap 3 im in 7th coming into turn one guy hits me and flips me over, he apologizes says he lost his brakes and its cause his g25 is having connection problems. so I lose .06 on my sr.
I get in a qualifing session and get my .06 back.
Then I get in another race, I qualify 1st. Finish 1st. my sr went up to 2.63.
Im almost at a 3.0 just need to keep it above that for my next promotion. I don't see me getting a 4.0sr in races with alot of rookies.

Okay, Greg has got me a little nervous with his level of committment. I guess I'm going to have to start driving with two hands.

It's Monday again gentlemen. Any suggestions for car/track combo?

Bob's display of skill in the MX-5 made last week pretty interesting. So, I'm voting we stick with the MX-5 but maybe a track that none of us are familiar with? Or, maybe a wierd car at one of the rookie tracks, like Street Stocks or Advance Legends at Laguna.

Sure where would you like to race? I have doing alot of oval racing. The street stock at Richmond was fun yesterday. I came back from 2 laps down to come in 7th.

Talladega is fun with those cars also.

Did you race the 2.4 hours of daytona? I was at the GNRS.

Psydwaze
01-31-2011, 04:30 PM
I missed the 2.4 Daytona race. My daughter had a cheerleading competition on Saturday. That was going to be a tough/fun race too. I think they fell just short of 1,000 racers. 150 Mustangs qualified and I'm pretty certain my personal best wasn't even going to get me into the top split.

Are you guys planning on running a full season? I ended up finishing 16th overall in the Grand Am Mustang class, so I'll probably be shooting for a top 10 this season. I just hope the car counts are a bit higher this go round. I might also run a D-class series in the MX-5 or at least something that runs everyday, so I can catch a race whenever.

Oval or road works for me. I'll see you online later.

I have been practicing the C6R. I'm not much of an MX-5 guy. Last week at Watkins Glen. I do better in the bigger HP cars.

Last week one of the few times i have had time to practice, I ran at WG and they did not use the bus stop. That was a fast track. No bus stop but they ran the boot. I did pretty well. Maybe we should run that tonight.... We have run that girl car Mx5 enough.... Or maybe a superspeedway race again

Yeah last night was alot of fun. You need to get your mic and head set working. Last nights race was going well until Bob just hit me from behind and he continues to brake way to late. I got my personal best down to a 142.5, I think.

96z28ss
03-29-2011, 09:01 AM
I brake late?
How about you brake too early? You got them fancy pedals that take you deeper in the turn. I got a 143.9 which I don't think was bad concidering I don't drive that car and that was the first time at that track with that configuration.

Lino spun out infront of me about half way into the race. I hit him and my steering was screwed up, but I still stayed and finished the race. 2 laps to finish and I got a flat tire, due to the one tire pushing. First time I have ever gotten a flat tire, it was the funniest thing I have ever seen, it felt and sounded so real. So I finished in 2nd place with a flat tire.
