Karl- Just shooting to have the car done for SEMA will be great... but I do want the car shaken out before it goes to SEMA.. Hell.. We are gonna be fighting for the keys to who drives it to Optima!! :D
Maybe a few, at RTTHs, trying to wind down at Cris' expense:lol:
No really I want cris to shoot for everything, not just SEMA. If he can get the car shaken out in time, I would think that it would have a good chance at getting an OUSCI invite. Never can tell if this opportunity will come by again. Carpe whatever. Seize the day!

Attention to detail is second to none! Motor pic is the money shot! Nailed the industrial look with with the satin gray, black and stainless hardware! Is the top of the cowl gloss or just a reflection?
Good luck on the thrash and look forward to seeing it at SEMA!

Nice detail on finishing the stock Uprights. Did you powder coat or hard anodize them? Also did you press out and re-install the upper ball joint? Was masking the part a pain?

Billet trunk hinges were not in the budget.. We need to leave some of it for gas money.. The trunk is not a focal point in the car.. so could not justify the cost for billet trunk hinges
No billet trunk hinges?:willy:
The sub-frame is powder coated.. the rest is painted.. Gotta thank Jay/Jamess113 for helping on the paint formula for the grey & helping on getting correct flatting agent for the colors..
Masked control arms & uprights.. painted them

Awesome stuff there Cris!
Cris@JCG
10-01-2011, 08:48 AM
Thanks Todd.. It was not the ideal place for the oil lines but it was tough finding a spot for them especially where I placed the oil tank.. But I wanted the tanks feed point to be high so that gravity could keep the the oil feed to the engine.. Looked @ it last nite.. We will fab some stainless sheild to help with heat & keep direction of oil from falling in top of the header if we ever get a leak..

Car looks amazing! I almost went with a similar location for my coils but decided to change it for fear of throwing a serpentine belt and slicing the plug wires. I know it is rare to break a belt but...
Cris@JCG
10-07-2011, 08:55 PM
I can understand your reason for not putting the coils in my location.. I was more worried about getting caught in a rain storm.. So, we built this covers to protect the coils from getting wet.. We need to paint them black..

Here is another pic of a shield we built for the oil lines on the side of the block plus it also keeps heat away from the wiring for the engine.. Take a look @ the bottom of the bellhousing.. It is a Mcleod.. I knew we were going to run the car low.. the lower portion of the bellhousing was the lowest point.. so we grabbed a stock f-body bell housing & a modified it look like the stock one.. Plus a notch for header clearence..

Hey Cris, it was good talking to you the other day...
I think what I meant to say is just order me one of these in a deep electric blue but can I get it in a convertible instead?
This is real nice. It is good to see local talent setting the bar real high and doing such quality work.
Quick question: Are you concerned about the return oil line picking up heat on the way back to the engine?
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/jcgrestoration/IMG_1400.jpg

Ron- I was wondering who was gonna be the first about giving a hard time about the steering wheel..
Jeff- Car will be leaving to the upholstery shop on Tuesday.. It will be gone for a few days.. Call me before you come out to make sure that it is here..
I was anxious to here the exhaust system on this car!
The car kicked me a fought me all day yesterday to get fired up.. The one thing that worried me the most was that I opened up the wiring harness that Speartech had re-worked for me & cleaned it up & loomed it in nylon braid.. My fear of LS wiring on LS conversions is completely gone.. Getting the engine to build oil pressure before fire up was time consuming.. but once pressure was built it was smooth from their.. The dry sump oil system worked out great.. It holds about 11 qts of oil.. The temp maintained @ 180 thru first fire-up.. The ProPart Spek gages are awesome... But I am having a problem getting the the rest of the gages.. ProParts is working on getting the rest of them to me this week..
The smoked glass on this car is going to look great... Today I get the rest of the door glass in..
The SEMA crunch continues!
What a car! Motor sounds bad azz! Congrats Cris...

Hey Chris - congrats on the startup - sounds wicked! I forget the motor specs - I'm gonna have to go back and look. Never heard of those gauges so I looked 'em up - holy cr@p - those are some 'spensive dials man!
As for the rest of your startup experience - I can almost quote you. I have to update my own build thread but suffice to say I spent most of the day re-wiring also. Speartech was fine. ISIS was fine. Custom dash fine but the combination of the above took some last minute (re)work. Similarly - I am no longer scared of the LS wiring. However my fear did extend well into the oil system esp at startup but my engine builder showed me how that goes.
Anyway - glad you are getting close. Looking forward to seeing this monster at SEMA!

Gregg- I have never posted engine specs.. We had a stock LS7 that we opened up & changed a few things.. kept the stock crank & rods, changed the pistons, balance & blueprint, valve job, Avaid oil screen baffle, new cam that I will have to look for specs..
The gages were a bit pricy but worth it to monitor the engine that we all worry about.. These gages are used in Cup racing.. The cool thing about them is that they are programmable.. If oil pressure hits 20 PSI.. it warns you by turning red.. same for oil temp, water, tach.. The speedo has pit row monitor to not exceed speeds on pit row..
ISIS was discussed early in the build but decided to keep the wiring simple.. This car is complicated in many ways but also kept easy in other ways.. Ken W from Wire 1 has been great to work with… I told him that I wanted to clean up the engine harness that Speartech had done for me.. but I had never silver soldered.. He gave a crash course on it & told me to mark all wires before I started.. learned a lot .. That was my biggest fear on the engine fire up.. all good.. Ken did the rest of his own body harness..
The oil system was another worry because we did our own system to a extent.. This is our first car with all in house custom plumbing.. learned even more on that part..
The Vaporworks/Ricks fuel system again worked perfect for me.. Of course it helps that Carl comes in and sets up my gas tanks with his system..

Carl- That is ride height!! to start off with.. I am sure we will have to adjust it when start driving it.. That is why we spent the time making sure that everthing is tucked underneth the frame rails..
Here is another shot of the car in a differnet angle.. I spent @ least an hour last nite looking @ it in diffeent angles.. The car to me just sets right @ this ride height..

I'm just simply amazed on how much the quality of these builds have gone up over the last 20 years. This car would have been a Ridler contender a few years ago and here the owner is planning on using it as a track car. Just amazing. :hail: :hail:

This was our first rodeo ride for building a car for SEMA.. What an experience it was .. We were still doing interior work on Sunday @ 3 PM loading & leaving @ 4 PM.. It was a long week but well worth it.. Got to meet allot of great people that have been following our work on Lat-G..
This car did great for us in more ways than I can imagine.. I have to thank the owner who allowed me to live vicariously thru to him to build my dream car.. “MY CREW” I could have not done it without them.. They are my biggest asset to what we can build @ JCG..
Here are some pics of where we were staged for SEMA & the HRIA banquet ..
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/jcgrestoration/IMG_1681.jpg
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/jcgrestoration/IMG_1669.jpg
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/jcgrestoration/IMG_1671.jpg
I need to also thank Greg Weld for coming out of retirement for a week & keeping the car clean for us.. For once he could reach the roof of a car with a duster!
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/jcgrestoration/IMG_1673.jpg
Leaving SEMA in the rain! Well.. It was a good thing we had functional wipers.. The owner & I left SEMA for a test drive around Vegas in the rain.. What the hell! It will be his daily driver when I ship it back to Tennessee! What a better way to proof out if she can handle a small rain storm..
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/jcgrestoration/IMG_1689.jpg
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/jcgrestoration/IMG_1682.jpg
Friday night after we leave SEMA.. Me and the crew are drawing straws on who is going to be the first one to be on guard duty.. We brought the car in open trailer.. It is a race car/daily driver! I did not want to be out in the cold/rain .. So I call Todd AKA Vegas69 to see if I can store my car in his garage for the night.. first words out of his mouth “ dumb ass” who brings a car to SEMA in a open trailer.. Just shrugged my shoulders & laughed! So we are off again driving to Todd’s house @ night.. in the rain! Trying to read the txt message that Todd sent me with driving directions.. As always.. I still got lost! We passed the exit about 10 miles.. All I can say is the little 68 proofed that she handle the rain..
Pic of the car when we arrived @ Todd’s.. I was not even their for 5 minutes.. OPEN the hood.. As we all know Todd is a man of very little words.. “ICE MAN”

Get to Todd’s house Saturday morning to pick up the car.. to head off to Optima.. I promised Todd a ride in the car.. So.. instead I threw the keys to over to him.. I am waiting for the phone call on what it will take to convert his 69 to a LS engine! LMAO!
WYjBgcvHh3o
After Todd’s drive I am figuring out if I really want to load the car on the trailer to head out to Optima.. I think to myself what a better way to break in the engine.. So I jump in & drive from Todd’s house over to Optima.. Her first taste of snow.. We build them to drive them!

We arrive @ Optima & park it @ the Wilwood booth.. About 3 PM the owner STOLE the keys away from me .. & drove the 68 for the first time! Got back with a grin from ear to ear.. Car is scheduled for delivery for Christmas! We got a few things to adjust for the owner, get the car vinyl wrapped, dyno tune, a full day of track abuse @ Button Willow with Dave & Mary Pozzi @ the wheel.. Got a few photo shoots with some magazines.. We will be showing her @ the Delmar show this month...

Great, great car!
I'm not really one for '68's, but this car is changing my mind on that. Love the stance on that car. That tail spoiler looks great on there. I love the rear of that car, the spoiler, the tail panel matching the bumper. Very nice.

Today I woulkd like to give a thank you to Ben Hermance for the rendering he did for us on this project.. It was very important asset to the build because the owner & I kept referencing it to to when the car was built.. Ben understands the theme of cars I like to build & makes it easy when I feed him with information for a new project..
Yesterday Didier of American Muscle Cars from France shot the car for their magazine.. Took the oportunity to shoot a few pics for myself.. Rupp will shoot it in a few weeks for Camaro Performers..

We made it out to our first Goodguys Show before the year ended.. It was a blast to watch the car go down the Autocross track.. Dave & Mary Pozzi were behind the wheel of the car helping me get a feel for the car & to see what needs to be done before we put a full load on the it.. We got a few small issues we need to get sorted out before we track it again.. I was planning on taking it to Streets of Willow on the 4th of Dec. But the front fenders are coming back off so that we can modify the inner wells.. they are rubbing on the inside & have blistered the paint plus the brake booster is not working properly.. I think we are just gonna convert it to manual brakes.. need to put a breather tank on the rear-end.. & just finish off all the details before we deliver it.. In the mean time I daily drive it & use it as my parts chaser! We will also be renting out the Camarillo Airport for testing & tuning with Pozzi’s in early January...
I got to drive the car once down the Autocross with Doug Renner as co-pilot.. Bill Goldberg kept egging me on that I should drive it.. I got thru the course with the car in one piece & did not knock down any cones.. That was a blast...
Here is a pic with Mary behind the wheel..

Congrats on the award yesterday. Del Mar is a great show to win awards at for the setting you get to park you car or truck in.
I think you have the Muscle Machine Award you got mixed up with the Street Machine of the Year award. The Muscle Machine award is given out maybe 10 times through out the year and next Oct before SEMA they select the Muscle Machine of the Year winner from the 10 finalists. The Street Machine of the Year awards has a top five that is selected Friday night at Columbus after the show and afternoon autocross and the winner is crowned Saturday night at a big ceremony that very same weekend. There are no Finalist awards given for the SMOY throughout the year.
Congrats, I just wanted to make sure you understood process.

Ed told me that the Friday turn out was equal to a spring show for Friday. The Saturday count was down from the spring show, but they figured that was also due to the Scottsdale show happening the previous weekend. But the autocross at this event was huge since it was not in the back 40. I think Goodguys met or slight exceeded their expectations for this new event.

I have gotten several PM's or emails on the tail lights about if we will have them available.. We are not planning on producing them to sell them... not very cost effective for us to make.. plus we had to machine the lens also..
To get the look we wanted .. which was a flat look we had to cut out the whole tail panel out & fabricate a new one.. Lots of work went into getting it to look right..

Congrats again Chris, it was great shooting the breeze with you. I'm expecting great things from your shop. Keep it up.

Maybe this is the best build around here, so simple, yet so awesome, not a lot of details, only the needed amount, it's a total win. Congratulations Chris. JCG does an amazing job.

Skip- I have been busy putting some miles on the little 68.. driving up & down the Coast.. Going to Malibu & taking two hour lunches .. Sometimes 3 depending on Santa Barbra traffic on the way back to the shop.. I got about 800 miles it.. Getting pulled over by the CHP & getting fix it tickets for not having a front license plate.. CA on ramps are fun! The owner said to drive it & make sure that she is road worthy!
All kidding aside.. Uhhh! We are getting the car ready for Run to the Alamo Event.. Fixing a few things that the car needs before we start abusing it on track..
Finally got the fuel gage from Spek, fixed the rear end vent by building a remote tank @ a higher level, Exhaust was hitting slightly, finish Stereo system, interior, trunk interior.. Chassis dyno tuning!
I got the parking brake cables done today.. I got them to work great.. I can apply the p-brake with the car in gear & will shut the car down.. P-brakes are pain to get them to work correct.. but I used a Honda Accord lever with a few machined pcs. For a balance bar system.. & lots of adjusting & measuring.. got tons of leverage from the Honda lever.. which a Lokar lever does not have.. Routing of cables are very important too..
I have to replace the brake booster or convert to manual brakes! Not looking forward to that but we will see how that goes.. We got tire rub on the inboard side of the inner fender wells on suspension compression… We will be fixing those two things this next coming week..
We will be renting the Camarillo Airport for a day during the week to shake the car out in mid January.. That will be fun! I will be doing some traveling this year with the car to attend all the race events going on .. Gotta support what we built!
I will post videos as we do some dyno tuning & testing @ the Camarillo Airport soon..
We got a lot of things going on behind the rear-end!

Cris- I would think you get lots of offers to have lunch in Malibu...they're so bored with their Ferraris, Lambos and of course Panganis.... ;)
Seriously, that's some great progress obviously with some more hills to climb. Brakes specifically (maybe a broad generalization here) but it seems like they offer their fair share of challenges on many serious pro-touring builds...
I got a surprise for you Skip! Ben Hermance is working on it for me this week..
Rutt row! :wow:

Cris,
Are you going to be in the shop Monday, the day after Christmas?
