I just noticed someone had commented the 67 Chevelle built by the team at Goolsby Customs and thought it may be a good time to introduce a project I've been fortunate enough to be involved in for months now. I'm sure one of the guys over there will be chiming in soon with some progress pix, specs and updates throughout the build.

Josh gave me a call back in Feb with a slight hesitation in his voice when he told me they had a new project that needed some help. When he told me it was a 71 Mustang, I think he was a little surprised to hear my excited reaction.

These forgotten Mustangs often seem to be passed by at car shows and ignored by the performance crowd looking for something more agile and less barge-like. We took this as an opportunity to knock the ugly off of a potentially great car and get the proportions back under control without losing it's DNA.

I want to thank Josh and Goolsby Customs for letting me take a swing at it.
I hope you like it and comments, positive and negative, are always welcome.

Here's a little icebreaker to get things rolling.....

A quickie photoshop chop to tweak proportions

Thanks for the kind words Ben and eveything you have done , we are extremely excited about this build and the challenges we will face this is a follow up build to the 67 chevelle for the same customer..... sort of the anti-everything the chevelle is it is riding on another Roadster Shop custom chassis... as we could think of nothing else worth putting under this and those guys have to be the absolute best in the business and by far the easiest to work with.

For power I will let the pictures speak by itself.....many more build pics coming soon .....

Nice job Ben, it looks lke you shrten the fron over hang about 6", behimd the front wheel about 2 " and another 4 to 5" of the back. Does that sound about right.

Base on the pictures, those changes loo like they are going to make a major difference.

Thanks for sharing.

By the way, the interior looks killer. I love the door panels, heck I love the whole concept. Sweet project!

Thanks guys.

I forget the actual dimensions of the cuts but even shaving a little off made a big difference right away. We altered the drip rail area to soften the shape of side window and make the roof look a little less flat. The intent was to create a more refined and aggressive look to the profile of roof and side glass. Another major mod is that we tunneled out the rear deck so there's a pass through on the rear spoiler. This resulted in a more sculpted rear roof but from the side it appears unchanged.

The whole rear of the car and the grill needed some massaging and detail work to achieve a more balanced and modern look. There's a lot of machined parts and fine details that'll hopefully tie the car together and reinforce the contemporary, industrial theme we were going for.

Great to see you guys take on the challenge of improving on the fastback's design. Always liked the front end styling of these cars and the convertible models.

I stopped by the shop and saw this build in person today. They have made some good progress on the front cut. I can't wait to see how it turns out. It should be another killer Goolsby build.

Good to see Goolsby getting some recognition on here. He has always done great paint work. I have seen the Chevelle and it is awesome. This new project is going to be pretty sweet too. Nice to see that they are doing more pro-touring style builds.

I see a little bit of an Australian Falcon look to the 1/4 panel after the mods. Very cool project. People are going to like it, but won;t be able to figure out what you did to it. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

thanks man we appreciate it a lot and its crazy you say that about the mustang's new found popularity , after a couple conversations with the Ring Bros. at Sema we talked about our next project being a 69 fastback and they informed us of their 70 project and we said wow cool,...then we nail everything down with Phil and Jeremy at RS about them doing the chassis and they let us know about their next track car and we said oh,.....THEN we hear through the grapevine of yours and Steves collaboration and we said OK... and ask the customer that instead of continuing on the 69 we were 20% into what he thought of testing the uncharted waters of the 71-73 boat of a car to try and stand out in the what we feel will be a sea of STANGS over the next couple years (its gonna be a revolution) ..and he never questioned it he said lets do it...and to top it off several months ago we see the first renderings AND YOURS IS WHITE which is the color this customer wanted from the start of all this ...So I say all of this to say its interesting to see that when a group of very talented innovators from all over the country try and think outside the box they all end up outside the box together ...thats funny... anyway thats just a liitle background on the car and our thought process hope it all works out and I cant wait to see what you guys pull off , should be awsome Strope has a style all his own and thats awsome when everyone is all keep it clean this and keep it simple that he really acheives it.... perfection through simplicity ,amazing. Oh and by they way I think we met in Columbus when I was talking with Phil and you stopped by for a minute it was good to meet you and cant wait for the next update

I have seen that motor Troy did and it is amazing ..I agree this motor with some vintage parts would be awsome but I think the modern vibe we were going for and that Ben brought to life on paper is lending itself to these angular lines on the valve covers and engine cover....and is the first reason we went this direction because this motor looks incredible...but I do concur

And while Im at it was going to show a few bumper progress pics from last week before we leave out for Shades of the Past ...lots of new stuff coming next week ..so stay tuned

I've always been torn between "65-'66s and '69-'70s. After this build, unshortened '71s - '73s will never look the same! I guarantee some people at Ford are going (woulda, shoulda, coulda).

There are actually access panels on both sides that bolt in to access the bulkhead fittings and run the lines if you look closely at the last picture you should be able to make them out

You will be very happy with that front clip also not to mention that added room you need

You dont have to wait for that ship, I am sure we could work something out, its probably not as bad as you might think and thanks for the compliments but Jonathan is the paint guru I couldnt spray a panel if it was paint by numbers and yes over the past few years we have a little bit of a focus shift and are trying to improve with every build , just as many of the other great builders on here are doing as well

I stopped by the Goolsby shop today. It was kind of after hours and everybody had their hands dirty on Pegasus so I just looked around and didn't get in their way. I think the next update is going to be a big one, and I won't ruin it for anybody. It is an amazing build. A lot of subtle details and major changes too. I will also say that the shop was very clean and organized with a lot of nice looking iron in different stages of completion.

Would again like to thank all of the people and vendors and our guys in the shop and most importantly our customer Mr. Shores for making this one come together were sorry we couldnt get him the top five he wanted but we were able to get a builders choice this past weekend. We would also like to thank GoodGuys for putting on such a great and organized show with such great people. We had such a great time talking to everyone this weekend and think the car was accepted well.

Congrats go out to the top five winners RPM,Ringbrothers,RoadsterShop, and Anvil all of you and your guys are so great it makes it that much more fun competing against each other ,especially being a bunch of NoNames from Alabama. I have never seen that many top quality cars competing at once and it should be a testimate to this hobby we all love so much.

Well enough of the mushy stuff lets get on with some pics over the next few days i will be uploading more of what I have and maybe more as we are thrashing on this thing at other events, Again thanks to everyone you know who you are

I just want to say congrats to the Goolsby Customs crew on the Builder's Choice award! These are really the first completed pix I'm seeing along with everyone else! Hats off to them!

They are truly a class act and evidently can run with the big dogs too. It was a pleasure working with the team during the design phase and I really enjoyed the challenge of working on a car that gets totally ignored by everyone.

As far as the top 5 recognition, I think the judges simply had different criteria than the direction this car took. Although, I haven't seen it up close. The plan was to carve a swan out of the "ugly duckling". Then make it into what we envisioned a modern version of a 71 Mustang Concept Car would have looked like had the designers not been heavily medicated and the accountants and execs were locked in a janitor's closet. It was totally re-proportioned with some modern details added to bring it up to date but it was supposed to look like very little was done to it. We just eliminated the ugly elements end emphasized the beautiful ones. By those standards, I'd say it was very successful. Well done Goolsby Customs!

As we say in Boston....there's always next year.

I am sure that everyone involved in the build really appreciates your enlightening opinion on what you would have done. I really don't get why people like you feel the need to go onto a thread and post crap like this.

There are a lot of good attacks in your first post. Makes you wonder who didn't have the nerve to post this under their actual username:_paranoid :_paranoid If this is an actual newbee you may want to rethink your introductory post. Or maybe post pictures of your can and let everyone have a run at telling you what they think you did wrong.

The Goolsby crew had the vision to create an incredible car out of one of the ugliest Mustangs ever produced. If anything, this car has not gotten as much attention and publicity as it deserves.

He builds Mustangs. Has a right to his opinion, but not the ideal way to start out on a site. ;)

I want to add that I do not know the Goolsby crew personally, but they did a great job with what was considered the ugly step-sister of the Mustangs. And the Ring Bros? Besides being the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and uber-talented, they must be doing something right as they keep winning award after award with their builds.

Really dude? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but to come on here very first post and personally attack someones vision and hard work and then try to thinly veil the attack by not liking Ring Brothers cars either? This may not be the forum for you.

As I told Modmach on his thread

http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=4961

I never liked that year of mustang but I like yours. No wait I love yours.

I've always thought the Ford designers had a lot of good ideas that the bean counters and the materials of the day didn't allow them to execute when they built those cars.

That car is beautiful; yet still recognizable as a grown up version of the bucked toothed pimple faced kid it was in the early 70s.

Awesome just awesome. It could only be better if it was a Torino.

Uncle Rico strikes again. I'll tell Jonathan and Josh that we should scrub the plans we have on all the new projects, apparently we missed the new trend in disco-touring that's sweeping the nation. I should just put down my pencils and markers and brush up on my LSD induced wizard murals and dancing bears. I swear I know this guy from every New England car show I've ever been to.

Since you have it all figured out, sounds like it's time for you to step up, get in the shop and show everyone how it's done!

I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong!

Everyone needs to remember that light travels faster than sound so people often appear bright until they speak.

It's best to ignore him and focus on what a stellar build this is. Great vision, great execution over the top but not over done. I need to get some of that moonshine those guys at Goolsby are drinking that leads to these kind of visions. It is obviously a euphoric high.

Well looks like we had a little troll drama this weekend , well everyone is entitled to their own opinion no matter how wrong, or outdated they are , anyway thanks everyone for the support its great to have you guys on our side. Ill take this opportunity for a shameless plug and let everyone know that Pegasus is in the June issue of HotRod, check it out John Jackson did a great job as always......especially hiding all that "2005 billet stuff" , I will have to get someone to do a photoshop "shackle up" and post that and see if it gets his approval

Look the best thing you can do is distance yourself from that hideous Ford.

Not because I like the car but because I hate to see you guys suffer with the controversy I'll come pick it up and hide it out here in my garage in CA. Nobody will know its yours anymore and if somebody sees it I'll just tell them its mine. :unibrow:

If you had just built a Torino everyone would have loved it.

Good looking out , but it's already in the shop ,for a repaint and lengthen the front end back to stock ,... Maybe a couple inches longer, who knows maybe we can talk the owner into a Ranchero conversion:lol:

Maybe a little rake and some slotted mags too. Don't forget to de-minitub it while you are at it.

Sweet.... Yal know my motor is being built right down the road in Pittsburg TN so the more "unique" moonshine induce design elements the better.

That whole conversation with Phil about slapper bars makes sense now.:D

Just make sure you run the design by classicstang first...............
