How about a 69' with a complete 2008 Z-06 running gear and suspension? How about a full crome moly chassie? I being building on it for a little over a year and it's almost done. I'm not much for posting and posting pics so bear with me and i'll do the best I can Thank's Bob

The car I started with was a nice virgin sheet metal car and saved alot of time. I bot a complete drive train and the wheel base is within 1 in. of a stock camaro so the tork tube did'nt have to be modified. The tracking width is wider so it had to be narrowed and new rear axles had to be made.

Now that's awesome. How much did you have to narrow it up?

REAL BOB JOHNSON
07-07-2010, 09:11 PM
If I remember it was like 3 and a half on front and 5 on rear. I used the stock Z-06 wheels and they have alot of offset I don't think you could ever get it in far enough to put a conv. style wheel Thank's Bob

While I dont want to knock QA1's quality - but Pfadt has been designing and selling coilvers for the Vettes for years, and at 1800 bucks, you can't complain about the price. Everyone that I know that has them, loves them.

Just my 2 cents.

c-6 vette is 107" and a camaro is108" move the motor back a half and trans forward a half and you have the same. I cut back into the fire wall 4 inch's and kept all the same locating points as a stock c-6

Very cool build. I'm doing something similar but with Viper components on a 69 Dart, less the V10 (too much weight and lack of balance). Where did you pick up your shortened axles? Are they new or did you have the stocks shortened? Thanks.

if you won't then i will! its a nice piece for a street rod... but its not a performance shock. the valving is ..... suboptimal.. and the adjustment is simple bypass orifrice (so thet change damping with temperature).. and they dont return to the same setting .. and 4 clicks on one shock doesnt equal 4 clicks on another...

but they look spiffy and are cheap

Mark Williams made the axles. The stock ones were .060 to small to respline. a little pricie because they had not done any yet. Something else pretty cool, the peddals out of a c-6 brake, clutch and gas fit pretty nicely in a first gen.without much mods and moves the corvette booster over 3 inchs for more motor clearence

Awesome project Bob! In hindsight of everything I've modded on my '69, your approach may end up being less work LOL! But seriously, it's great to hear how everything is fitting and what needs modification. You'll have the best of both worlds IMHO. Among the advantages you get to run the ABS, stock drysump, brakes plus no messing with new transmission etc.

Will you be running the stock BCM and instruments? Doing a custom harness or will you be able to adapt the stock one?

I'll be watching to see how you get on tackling the cooling and intake with the front of the '69.

So many questions.....

By the way - you are doing a great job of updates and pics - keep 'em coming Bob!

I've taken the stock corvette complete wiring and spent MANY hours weeding the unneeded wires. I'm using the ABS,traction control, heated seats, power seats out of the corvette, keyless start, power door locks with electric door latches, and the corvette guages with digital display. I'ts taken me 3 months to wire it and now i'm cross eyed. Bob

The first one I knew of was a guy named Gary Guthrie. His car went into Wayne Due's shop just after my 50/50 car and actually went all the way through into final assembly and has run on the track. It's yellow and Red.

The 2nd one I know of is a Blue car built by Lingenfelter.

21st Centry Street Machines also had a rear c5 rear set up but not sure what cars got the install. Payton might know. Either way, camaro or others theres still only a hand full C5/C6. (another one just got added to the lat g for sale list) I can see that list being much greater if you add in the C4, Heidts, etc to the mix.

Anyway, back to Bobs thread- Great car Bob! Cant wait to see this one on the road.

Great Looking Project Real Bob!

Then there are the guys at Neuman Car Creations. They specialize in late model Corvette running gear in early model bodies. I've got a client with a 64 and a 65. One is blown LS2 powered and the other has a 572 GM crate engine. I belive they make their own frames, bolt on the Vette Running gear, your choice of engines, and the drop on the Early model body. (Makes it sound easy doesn't it?)

Ironically the guy's name is Paul Neuman (no relation to the actor.)

I'll get it out side and get some side pics. I'ts been in upolestry shop prision getting interior done. I'm not big on street rod type interior so it's pretty stock. I used stock rear seat back and cut the center out bigger for the trans axle and the bottom half in two pieces and covered them with black leather with red /black houndstooth ,it's bad as,front seats c-6 vette covered the same way Heated and power with memory.

Been working on the doors. I've used the latches and all the electronics out of the corvette power door locks and power doors. The electric latches in a vette are in the door post not the door and the latch is on the door so I had to modify latches to install in door.If you're familer with a C-6 theres a safety,non-elec, handle in the floor to manualy open the door so I used the stock inside door handle for that and installed the elec. button in the door panel and the outside handle pushes a elec. switch and electricaly opens the door like a corvette. Also has heated and power seats from the Z0-6 and the memory controls are also in the door panel. Curious on what made you go this route...did you have any performance goals in mind?

For example, did you set out to try and exceed the handling capabilities of the best front and rear 1st gen chassis/suspension setups on the market right now?

Or was it more 'this should work well...time to prove it' ?

GM spent millions of dollars on corvette suspensions over past time and they are proven street and track. My black car was a little to much. It had c-4 front and rear sus.with air bags Big block with turbos and was a little to much. It drove fine, handled pretty good but a little nose heavy. My new red car, I've tried to duplicate all the factory control points for the control arms other than moving them in to fit under the car because a vette tracks wider. Anybody can buy a bunch of bolt ons but I guess I like doing it the hard way.The motor I have now is a LS-7 with a cam and headers and once I'm done with everying else I will put a supercharger on. Excellent Bob - can't wait to see this finished and hear how she drives!

Any chance we can talk you into taking a few teaser pics of how things turned out under the hood - maybe some of under the car with the new running gear, esp torque tube and the rear?

Nice!

Just super all the way around. Too much neat stuff to comment on individual areas. It's killer! Like the factory + custom setup.

I've been working on the dash bezel and i'm about done. The dash bezel and pad are 69 nova. I cut out the whole top and made it out of steel to fit the corvette guages. Bob

Awesome project! Very nice job!
Would you share what is needed to make the Vette cluster/geuges work on a conversion? Like what else do I need to grab from the Vette I'm taking the gauges?

Well, that's a deep subject. The guage cluster is a class 2 module and is feed through the body control module and works off low voltage signals. I wired on this car for 3MONTHS 2 and 3 hours a night makings everything work its not that easy. But I'll help if I can Bob,
