Thanks guys.
Rodger, the work you guys do is truly inspiring to me. I try to look to the professionals, like yourself for even small ideas that I can apply to my projects.
It's been a long time project. I bought the truck out of a friends field back when I was 15 years old.....well Dad bought it for me. I've changed my mind several times on the theme and finally settled on a modern interpretation of a "stock truck". I wanted it to have a solid color similar to a stock color. The color is an Izuzu green. I went with the Wheel Vintiques steelies and stock caps.
I've learned a lot so far building the truck. My fabrication skills have improved and more parts became available for these trucks, so some of the early work that had been done was "re-done".
My Dad has been a huge help. He's a body man from way back and has tons of experience for me to draw upon, but at the same time he really stays up with the current latest and greatest technology....................and he works for cheap!!!!! Sorry Dad!
I have a family now, so time is limited, but I still hope to finish the truck and get out to some shows next year.
Wish me luck!

Ironic enough we have the same theme for the 48 truck we are doing.

Thanks for the comments. Darrin is doing the interior, eventually. He's been waiting and watching me miss deadline after deadline. I've spoken with him about it several times, but I'm just not quite there yet. My new goal is maybe try to work with him and get it to him in the late Winter early Spring. That will probably be a busy time for him though, so we'll see.
It's nice to see someone else from the area on here. Have I met you, if so I'm sorry if I'm not making the connection. Post up some pics of your project(s). The more project threads the better!

We worked over the weekend to get the bed and tailgate painted. The underside and wheelwells are coated with a stoneguard material. It turned pretty well, a few runs hear and there in the clear, but overall, nothing that sanding and buffing won't take care of.

So I measured for a driveshaft last night and in the process (actually prior to measuring) we made some adjustments to the pinion angle. As best I can measure with a digital angle finder, my engine/transmision is around 2.5 degrees down and my pinion is about 3.5 degrees up.
I know that they are technically supposed to be exactly opposite. My question is will I have issues If I don't get the pinion angle to exactly 2.5 degrees up, which I should be able to do if needed................and, is 2.5 degrees enough to not have u-joint issues?
Thanks,
Brandon

Yeah, I think Musclerides is down, but I'm not sure if it is for good. I had a lot of build info in a thread over there so hopefully it comes back up.
It's a '65 era 327 with the camel hump heads (461) - 2.02 valves, some porting, etc. and a decent sized Ultradyne cam (I can't remember the specs), Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and 750 Carb. The tranny is 700R4 and the rear is a 9" with 4.11's. It should sound pretty good and be plenty spunky for the cruiser that this thing will be.

Ha - - -- Yeah! I'd love to, but more likely will be that I finish this truck and then work on getting our house built on our property and my shop (as big as possible). As of right now (things change though), my next project will be a '66 or '67 Chevy II.
Dad and I have talked about getting with Rodger for a frame (the builder type) for his '57 Ford pickup. It may be awhile though. Dad wants to build a shop truck w/ some patina etc., but wants to be able to autoX it.
It's all about time and money. This truck has been taking way to long to finish so I've banned myself from getting involved in anything else until it is completed.

OK - - So I pretty much know what I need for my AC lines etc. I'm going to use the Aeroquip EZ-Clip fittings and lines for my AC.
I see that Vintage Air Sells a 1/2 NPT to #10 O-ring adapter, which leads me to believe that I can use the EZ-Clip fittings and lines for my heater hoses as well. Is this correct? I can't imagine that hot engine coolant would cause any problems that R134a wouldn't, but I wanted to ask.
My other questions are that I have the VA bulkhead, which has 3 X #10 O-ring and 1 X #6 O-ring fitting. I can use the EZ-Clip stuff for all of the fittings except the heater hose connections to the VA heater valve and unit under the dash. It just has the good ole copper line to clamp a rubber hose to. What's the best way to handle this?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but this is my first go-around with the VA stuff and wondered what the best practices are.
I can certainly call Vintage Air and get their feedback, but I thought I would try Lat-G for some others' experiences/advice.
Thanks - - -

OK - I had a few minutes during the day today to call Vintage Air and they answered my questions. Yes I can run the EZ-Clip for heater hose and they have the O-ring to hose barb fittings that I need for the connections under the dash. I just missed them when looking in their catalog.
I just thought I'd answer my own questions in case someone else searched an found them - they would have the answers.

Well, I thought I was pretty well done with all of the "dirty work", but........ We were pulling parts out to sand and prep for a coat of Flat Green last night and the lower grill pan was still as it came from the factory. I didn't think we needed the provision for the hand crank any more. ;)

I'm not sure I would describe us as anything other than SLOW! ;) I'd love to work on your wagon- - - I'm not sure it would even fit in our shop right now and I think Dad has a few projects in line after this one is done. He's been pretty patient with me, but he's ready to finish up his '48 Chevy and then get on his '57 Ford Pickup. I'm trying to work out a plan that results in a new house for our Family along with a much larger shop. We'll see how that works out.
I picked up a Pexto model 132 foot stomp shear the other day on Craigslist, so I was itching to use it. I also got to use the bead roller and the tig welder last night! It was a good night. I'm tired this morning though.
We plan to paint a bunch of the flat green parts on Saturday. Inner fenders, grill parts, hood hinges, hood props, grill pan, and other random under the hood stuff. The rest of the shiny parts just need wet sanded one last time and they are ready for paint - ie: front fenders, hood, running boards....
We're getting closer. I really want to at least get it wired to the point of being able to start it prior to putting the doghouse on it.

My plan is to bring it to Columbus. The big wild card will be whether or not I get it to the interior shop in time to get the interior done by then. He's pretty busy with other projects/customers, so it may be coming to Columbus with a partially complete interior. If it has seats in it, it'll be there!

So, just to make sure that I am hooking up my heater hoses correctly - - -
With a reverse flow water pump (Steward Pump that come with the VA Frontrunner), what is the direction of the coolant flow through the heater hoses. I just assumed that it would be out of the water pump and back in through the intake -- is that correct?

We got the truck started last night. After a few heat cycles and some adjusting on the electric fan controller -- all was well. solid and steady 50psi oil pressure..... I have a slight oil leak on the one valve cover, but other than that, it was pretty uneventful. I had to start it and get a little video. We were trying to see if the throttle pedal operated smoothly is why we were screwing around in the cab...

I'm not sure if I said it in this thread or not, but I bought this truck from some friends when I was 15 and it was literally sitting along a fence row completely disassemble. My Dad pretty much funded the projects start to get/keep me interested in building cars (and probably to keep me out of trouble!). Since then, well - - - a lot has happened. They are a 2-chamber Flowmaser knock off. I have full length headers into an x-pipe to the mufflers. I took the lazy way out, since my 4-link gets really busy and it really tight up against the bed floor when aired down - - so I just turned the mufflers down in front of the rear axle.

Thanks! It is looking increasingly unlikely that we will have time to get much of any of the interior done - - -read: "I'm too slow to get it together". That being said, come Hell or High Water (which we've had plenty of), we are going to try to make it to Columbus.
My wife has been extremely patient with the fact that I leave every night once our daughter is ready for bed and head to the shop. I think she is trying to eliminate any excuses that I may have for not getting this thing done before Kid #2 arrives.

We wrapped up Nora's Birthday Festivities and took her to the Cincy Zoo on Saturday, so Sunday I was at the shop at 6:00 am and spent most of the day over there. It's rare that I get an entire day to work in the shop, but it's nice when I do.

Well, we decided to push the truck out in the sun for awhile today and clean the dust off of it. My brother-in-law (and good friend) Brian came over today to help me get the bed boards all cut down and routed etc.. He is much better at wood working and in general just great at figuring how the best way to do things. He is a "true engineer" in every sense of the definition - - -anyway - -- Thanks a ton Brian. I will post some pics of the boards once we get them cleared and installed, but they came out great. I went with quarter sawn sycamore. Also a big thanks to my wife's uncles Dan and Tim aat Wilhelm Lumber who hooked me up with the boards.
It also moved for the first time under its own power tonight. WooooHooooo - -even though it was just to back it into the garage. I need to verify the TV cable adjustment with the pressure gauge and go though all of the checks and then we can test drive!
Below are a few pics of the truck sitting out in the sun.

The front bumper pan is buffed and the bumper is ready to go on. We are going to try to get the tail gate sanded, lettered, cleared again, sanded and buffed before Columbus, but if not - - -oh well it'll just be plain for the time being.
Oh - Thanks to my wife for letting me spend way too much time on the shop recently. Everyone keep your fingers crossed that we can get all the minor details wrapped up enough to be on the road and drive to Columbus Goodguys.

There is a bit of a lull in the action this week. We are smack in the middle of planning for next fiscal year at work.....blahhhhh! My wife is back at IU in a training session so that she can teach college credit Chemistry at our local High School - - just a quick plug for my smart wife - ;) Anyway, Nora (my 2y/o daughter) and I are hanging out this week and then the whole family is headed up to Gingerman this weekend for the Motorstate Challenge.
I think Dad is going to try to make some progress on a few of the items this week if he can get caught up at work. If I have to take vacation to get it ready, we'll be at Columbus!!!!

So, many of you know of my bad luck with the engine on the way to Columbus GG. I ended up buying a ZZ4 to replace the 327. I will dig into the 327 at a later date to see what happened..............
The ZZ4 is in the truck and we just need to finish hooking everything up, put the radiator back etc.. A little break-in and hopefully, I will be driving it again soon.

I'd love to make it down even if I don't drive the truck down. If so, I will look you up to say hey. Dad and I talked to your dad briefly at Columbus over by the Nomad. I only got to chat with you for second or two. I just felt like I was in LaLa Land that whole weekend..............
I missed the engine info. The 327 gave up on you? Any ideas what went wrong?
Im sorry that happened, I know you and your dad have been busting your butts getting the truck ready. Beautiful truck by the way!
wiedemab
07-25-2011, 03:09 PM
Yeah, I put the details in a separate thread, not sure why. I'll blame it on lack of sleep........
I think it spun a bearing. I made it within 35 miles of Columbus, OH on that Friday before it lost oil pressure while cruising down the interstate. I picked up this ZZ4 for not much more than it would cost to go though the 327 again, depending on what all is wrong with it.
The ZZ4 is new - A guy bought it for a project and never got around to using it. I think it will be a good engine for what I am going to do with the truck. There is a reason that GM has sold so many of them!
That ZZ motor is a great package and should get your truck down the road really nice.
Good luck with all the little stuff, and please post up pics of the finished interior.

So, shame on me if this is in the directions and I didn't see it.......... I've never been able to get the heater control valve to work in my truck. I called Vintage Air and they told me that it was likely a bad switch. They told me how to test the switch with a DMM (ie: resistance readings at the extremes of the switch). I tested it and determined it was bad. They sent me a new one and I installed it. I still couldn't get it to work. My next step was to take the valve out -- messy and not easy to get to up under the dash. I decided to tear the little gear box apart to see what was going on.. I took the electric motor out and tested it with a battery and it worked. I put it all back together, plugged it in and still nothing. I have a new valve on order at this point.
So here is the kick in the shorts............ Dad just happened to turn on the fan/blower motor and the valve moved. Damnit! I had no idea that you had to have the fan on for the heater control valve to operate. I'm not sure why that is the case. It is fine now that I know it, but man I was frustrated............
If it is in the instructions, please commence with the Dumbass comments now!

Thanks for the comments. This truck has been a long time coming. As I've said before there are things that I would change if I were starting on it today and there are some things that just didn't work out perfectly, but all-in-all it's a pretty nice piece. I'm looking forward to putting some more miles on it and then getting the interior finished up before next spring/summer.
S.... happens. Sit back drink a  and have a laugh about it.
Then get off your behind and FINISH that bad ass truck and enjoy it !

IMO a brown saddle bag (distressed) leather look would complete the "vintage" them you got going on.

I thought I was passing quite a few people - -- -:) I gotta figure out if I did something when I was monkeying around trying to remember how to program it. If not I'll call New Vintage and they'll get me straightened out.

I've been on the road a fair amount for work, but today I was able to make a trip over at lunch today to check out the progress on the truck. Darrin and crew have done a great job of making what I had envisioned into reality. I wanted simple (too simple in some cases, so thanks to Darrin for pushing me on a few things).
They still have some work to do to finalize it - console, finish the kick panels and a few little pieces to hide seat mounts etc., but it's getting close. I really like how it's turning out!!!!

Well - -the truck made it to and from Columbus with no major issues. I had an issue with a rear airbag that was completely my fault, but the folks at RideTech fixed me up. The truck has around 750 miles on it now and aside from a few little things that need addressed it is doing really well. I'm not happy with my fuel cap (too hard to remove). I'm going to replace it with a better one. I need to get my Vintage air unit to drain a little more easily...it wasn't draining as well as it needed to and was freezing up :( - - - -- I should be able to just route the drain hose a little differently and be good to go.
Thank God for Vintage Air on a weekend like that - -- It was insanely hot!
I really enjoyed seeing everyone. I'm not sure if I'll make it to the Street Rod Nationals with the truck, but I will definitely be at Indy Goodguys.

I made the trip down to the NSRA Nats, but only for Friday. I had to be back home for some family events over the weekend. We got rained on quite a bit in the morning, but then it cleared up. All-in-all the truck continues to do well. I have almost 1,000 miles on it now and only have a few small things that I want to tinker with.
I'm debating on putting it on the market to help fund a shop/garage at our new house (and my next project). That's what I get for moving farther away from Dad!!! In a way, I would hate to sell it, but I have another project in the waiting and can't afford to keep it and build the next project - -wish I could!
If I keep it, I'll probably put power steering on it over the winter. I have the frontrunner bracket for the pump, so it will basically just be a pump, new belt and a new rack and pinion - - should be an easy swap.
