Hi all,

Just wanted to introduce myself (officially), my name is Chris and I live in northern Ohio. I found this forum a while back but I have been trying to locate a car to start my build..... Well I found her! :)

Here's a couple pics from last weekend when we got her home.

The rear tail pan needs some work.....

So the plan is:

LS power!
6l90e trans (paddle shifted hopefully!)
Custom IRS rear suspension
C6 Vette front suspension components (w/drop AM steering arms)
Subtle body mods, nothing too radical
18" Fordgeline Wheels (gotta start saving for those puppies!)
275 front tire 335 rear tire

This will be mostly a garage build except possibly for the chassis. I good friend of mine owns a Chassis shop over in Norton (Pro Street Chassis) and I may take the car over there to get the tubing work done...not sure yet though. Either way I will be doing most of the work myself.

Can't wait to start the project! I KNOW it is going to take 3-5 years to finish (I told my wife that it should be done JUST in time for my mid-life crisis  )but getting started soon will mean the completion date will get here sooner rather than later! :)

I look forward to being more active on this forum.

Looks like a good starting point for a project! Since that rear pan is rusted you better check the panel behind the fiberglass one between the tail lights they can be tough to find and no one repops them yet as far as I know. Save that Speedo!

What a beauty! And yup that rear panel is terrible and notorious for breaking

Thanks guys!

I can't wait to be able to post progress pictures. Now that our deck project is complete (just finished it up Saturday late) I can start working on the car!

I have started to model it in AutoCAD to get the driveline figured out but beyond that I have not had time to do much else.

Thanks for the advice on the speedo! I need to go through everything and see exactly what I have. Anything of value I don't need will be heading to eBay to help pay for the chassis. There were some NIB parts that came with the car too like weather stripping, and window lift motors and things like that.

The price was right though.... All it cost me was the gas money from Ohio to St Louis and back...and some time. It was a nice little road trip for the wife and I. Oh, and about $21.50 to get the title changed into an Ohio title in my name.

Thanks again,

Chris

Does anyone know where I can get a stock '70-73 Nose assembly in the Ohio area?

Well, the wife and I spent the better part of the day at GG Columbus Saturday.... so much to see! Got some good pictures and ideas from the SMOY cars. It was cool to see a '72 Firebird in the ring there! :)

So now it is time to start tearing the car down for media blast. A good friend of the family has a Media blast room/equipment I can use all I need is the media. So I am knee deep in research about the different medias that are used. I think I am leaning toward Walnut shells or maybe corn cob media for most of the surface and StarBlast or Aluminum Oxide for the rust removal needs.

Oh, and we have decided the rear seat is pretty much pointless (I am 6'7" after all) so I am leaning toward a more "conventional" C5/C6 driveline. Going to go the 6 spd Puddle Shift automatic route....probably... :) After seeing the way they finished the rear interior area of Scar I have a new direction for that area (hence the C5/C6 driveline).

The fun should soon start!

Well couple quick updates....

First, I won a Corvette A6 trans off eBay for $500 shipped to my door!!!! Should be here late this week or early next.

Second is I started taking an inventory of of thins that came wit the car. I was pleasantly surprised to find the weather stripping is a complete set (Doors, Upper Rails, and Trunk) of Year One soft seals!

I also found front and rear TA wheel flairs...not in too bad of shape either. I also found the rear filler panel in the trunk so that was cool. Speaking of finding things the A-pillar covers for the interior were in there too.

I started stripping it today so we can media blast it. Not too much progress but a start none the less. Too bad I am going to be out of town most of the week....and then again over the weekend. That's gonna put a damper on the progress.

Nice project Chris. Great to see another Bird on this site. Any reason why you chose a '71 Bird?

Keep us posted with pics please.

Hi Ron,

Good question, I went with an early 70's Firebird for a couple reasons. When I first started looking for a project I was drawn to the 1969 Camaro but they are pretty popular here (everywhere I suppose) and the price is pretty much out of sight for the most part. So I started looking for a different car.

I have always liked Firebirds and Trans Ams (First car was a 1978 TA and I drag raced an 89 TA for twelve years) so I started comparing and contrasting the different years and trim packages and such and I decided I wanted to build something I did not already have at some point in my life so I decided on the early 70's Firebird. I really like the "all business" look of these cars! :)

I will post up some pics asap. I have not uploaded them to the PC yet and I am typing this from a hotel room in Cincinnati.

Progress pics....

I finally have time to post up some pics from the other day. Not much progress but time to work on her has been tough to come by lately.

Anyway,

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0741.jpg

After a couple minutes I had this:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0746.jpg

Which meant I found this (not unexpected):

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0747.jpg

And this:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0749.jpg

I knew about the door jambs and the tail panel is not quite as I thought it could have been.

So I picked this bad bot up today....

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0754.jpg

Oh yeah!!!!!!

I also found this on craigslist:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0755.jpg

It's in great shape except one flaw:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0757.jpg

It had been stored standing on end so the endura plastic (rubber?) cracked from the weight. Shouldn't be too tough to fix (I hope). For $150 I thought it was worth a gamble.

Chris,

I believe they just started making the whole rear sheetmetal replacement. I know they now have the rear curved bottom pan...called the Valence. Check on the performanceyears.com tech board....under 70-73 birds. Also, make sure thats not a 73 nose, as they are different mounts. Theres info on that same forum about that as well. Truthfully if you are going the pro-touring route you might want to consider the fiberglass nose. Takes a bit of prep, but drops weight................and really the nice thing is the long term durability of the paint.

The stock endura noses are a PAIN. Even properly prepped professionally, the nose on my #'s matching 72 trans am cracked from the temp in the garage changing from 40 degrees in the daytime to below freezing at night, and I'm not the only one who has had that happen.

The grills are 73 and if they fit that bumper correctly then the bumpers a 73. It can be used but there aren't any repro grills or chrome bezels available yet that I know of. The most noticable difference appearance wise is that the nose sticks out farther. I believe they changed it for 73 to meet new impact regulations. You can see the difference in the pic below of the white 73 and my 70 behind.

Thanks for the info guys (been a while since I could get online). I have not had time to look into what year nose it is for sure. I am sure the grills are 73's for sure based on the larger grid spacing. As for the nose I am not sure the "fit"....the shape of the grill does not really match up to the opening in the grill.

Thanks for the advice on the fiberglass. I was told that going that route was worse because the fiberglass noses are thin and crack prone. By prep work are you meaning adding material to the fiberglass to increase the thickness/strength? I might just go that route after all....those anvil carbon fiber noses sure are cool..... I guess I was hoping modern painting techniques could overcome the endura nose issues. Guess not though.

I will probably end up repairing the crack on selling it off to help offset the costs of a new nose.

I have the classic industries Firebird catalog on my Laptop! I have looked at year one too. Classic seems to have the best parts coverage of the companies I have found so far. I'm going to go checkout Performance Years right now!

Thank you so much for posting that picture! I have been searching high and low to see the exact difference between the 70-72 and the 73, but all I could find was straight on shots. The pic you posted helped a ton.

So as you you mentioned the grills are for sure 1973 inserts....in a 70-72 nose. They are in there angled and the guy made some "custom" mounts for them.

So now I have to decide if I want to repair this nose and keep it (and risk paint issues). Or repair the damage and try to recover my costs or just try to sell it and recover my cost without repairing it.

Which of course brings up the next issue....VFN or Anvil? The anvil is big $$$ but REALLY nice (they had one in the booth at GG Columbus). I always liked the VFN doors and front clip I had on my race car but I would guess I will need to add some material to the nose to make it strong enough for street use.

So I scored a Torque Tube out of an '09 vette off eBay I am going to pick it up Friday. Now all I need to find is a differential and I'll be able to start drawing the chassis!

Speaking of a Corvette rear end....do any of you guys happen to know the dimension from the mounting flange to the center of the rear axles? How about how far below the input centerline the rear axles are? Those dimensions would be most helpful!

I'll post up some pics when I get it all home.

I am currently trying to decide if I should invest in a new Compressor or continue to buy parts for the chassis/driveline. Right now I cannot do both. My though is if I get the compressor I can get that purchase out of the way early in the project then just go full steam ahead after that. I am looking at the Ingersol Rand SS5L5. The reviews all seem really good and it is probably all the compressor I will ever need. It is only single stage though... but 18.1 CFM @90 PSI is really good. Oh, it would be about $850 out the door. The 80 gallon 5 HP 2-Stage would be like $1075 out the door and it has slightly less CFM output that the other compressor.

What do you guys think?

Chris

Chris....whichever way you go I often see great deals on compressors on craigslist. Good 2 stage units in the $500-750 range. You can tell if a compressor has been cared for.

Yeah that is a great point. We kind of started out that way and one thing lead to another and the next thing you know were are looking at spending $850 on a new compressor. For instance there is a used 5HP 60 GAL Speedaire compressor on CL for $600, the thing looks BRAND NEW so I was like well $600 is a little higher than I would like to spend but it seems like a great deal. So then we found the IR compressor at TSC for $799 that puts out 2 more CFM @ 90psi. So then we were like well for $200 more we get 2 more CFM and a new machine. So the snow ball is rolling at full force! :)

Thanks for the advice.

LOL.......its a snowball effect. Just ask yourself what the more expensive one will do for you that the lesser one wont. I have to do that all the time. For example, when I sit and think of very simple things I could do to make more power......as if 1100 hp isnt enough........

Ok, the snow ball has stopped..... for the compressor any way! :)

I scored a used Snap-On BRA-718v 10 minutes from my house! Best part was I was able to get it for less thatn the 2 Stage 15 CFM Ingersoll Rand unit at TSC. It puts out 23.9 CFM @175.

So what will the next snowball be?????

I forgot to mention the guy I bought the compressor from is a guy I used to do work for in the shop I worked at in town. He is a great guy and takes real good care his stuff.

Anyway, I have the garage re-arranged to fit the new toy and I actually had a chance to do a little work on my project tonight. I will post up some pics as soon as I get a chance. I did not get to use the new toy but I did get to use my Miller Diversion. Fun stuff! :)

Ok so back to the project at hand...

I scored an A6 torque tube out of an '09 vette off eBay a while back. I asked the seller if he had they bell housing and he said he did have it but it was broken. I asked if he would send it along anyways and he said yes. Well he was correct it IS broken....

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0796.jpg

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0799.jpg

Luckily for me I have a Diversion at the house.

The prep:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0802.jpg

The weld (more like the beginning):

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0805.jpg

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_0809.jpg

I suppose I could pickup another bell housing but I have the time and it gives me a really good excuse to use the Diversion. :) I have to get some aluminum for the patches I need to make. Once I have that I will stop by the machine shop I used to work and and pick a block to bolt everything too to finish the repairs.

Well I finally had time to do some "real" work on her. Yesterday I spent the day stripping ALL the bolt on stuff off the body. All that is left is the front sub-frame and the rear suspension.

At this point I need to make a cradle/rotisserie to mount the body on while I do the paint stripping and metal work.

I would post pics but I am sure we have seen a car stripped down getting ready for metal work.

Stay tuned.

I can't believe I didn't eve get a "dude why the heck are you trying to salvage that bell housing" comment.

lol Chris...the compressor looks good, and like you I enjoy the challenge of trying to fix .something like that bellhousing. I need to get a gas tank for my mig welder, and then figure out what supplies I need to try welding aluminum. I'm new at welding.

Sorry I havent been following too closely...I tend to spend more time over at pro-touring.com than here (no offense I hope to anyone).

ccm399
09-20-2010, 05:51 PM
That's cool....

I just thought for sure someone would chime in about the bell housing. I may not end up using it but it is good practice as I have been away from the TIG welder for a couple years now. The weld tuned out OK... I had some time the other day and I cleaned it up and ran a weave pass over it, looks better now but I am still out of practice.

I have been really happy with the compressor, I had to use it some Saturday while removing stuff from the car. It was great to be able to grab the die grander with the cutoff wheel and remove a stuck emergency brake cable for instance.

I will metal finish the weld and prep the Bell Housing for paint. We mounted the bell housing to the block and made a shaft to align the torque tube front bearing race to the crankshaft center line. It was probably more work that it was really worth but it was fun none the less!

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone might know where I can get some BFG tires for mockup purposes???

I am looking for 275-35-R18 for the front and 335-30-18 for the rear. I will be running BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2. I am in northern Ohio but if you have something and would be willing to ship please let me know! The perfect deal would be tires that are worn out and being replaced. As I said they would only be for mock up.

Thanks!

Chris,

Check your local tire shops, especially the ones that sell used tires. Someone who removed a set from a vette or mustang, etc might come close. These guys have to pay for tire disposal, so......

And even if you have to pay a few $ for a junk set its still probably gonna be cheaper than shipping.

Not to make you more Jealous but technically I have two bottles and two regulator, one for the MIG and one for the TIG.... but who's counting! LOL :P

I saw over on PT that you are starting to work on your car too, sounds good! I hope to have the E-wheel done this weekend and then the sheet metal will begin! I will put a build thread over there too once I get rolling on the car itself.

Hey John,

Thanks for the comments, as far as the skills to use it we'll see  Building it might just be the easy part!

As for the bell housing I probably should have just bought a used one but I had fun repairing it. Until I started working on it I had not picked up a TIG torch in about 5 or so years. It's been really enjoyable to get back into working on cars! I.T pays the bills better but it is NO WHERE near as fun! :(

I'll post up some sheet metal shaping pics as soon as I have them.

First metal I have ever shaped on an E-Wheel...

Guys like Lasse make the E-wheel look easy... that whole "tracking pattern" deal is not as easy as they make it look! I'm sure with enough practice I will get better at it though.

Thanks for looking.

Wow Chris....I'm really jealous. Thats one hell of an english wheel....not your cheapie version thats for sure. What did it cost to build if you dont mind me asking? From what I can see....there's plenty of room to pull my car in there too...:D

Hey Aron,

Thanks man!

It was a a great project. Kinda "knocked the rust off" the ol' fabricating skills. It's been a little while since I have done this type of thing.

As for cost I will have to get a final tally but it wasn't too bad. Probably a little less than the same thing from HF. But... add about 30-35 hours of time and it is pretty "expensive". LOL But like I said it was a fun project so the time investment is not a big deal to me.

I'll get you a total as soon as I can.

Oh, as for the space, my wife's and my car are outside when I am working. As soon as the Firebird is inside my car will be outside full time. Hopefully under a temporary car port! :) But the more the merrier... :)

That panel took me about 10-15 minutes to wheel up. I am sure once I get used to the tracking movements and pressure I need it will shape even faster.

Ok cost break down for the wheel look like:

Steel 135.36
Hardware 14.80 My bolt selection isn't what it used to be!
Axle and Adjuster Material 9.00
Upper Anvil 41.54
Lower Anvils 95.85

Total 296.55

That does not include any consumables and such. But even if you add the Propane I used for heating the garage and the little bit of Argon, sawzall blades and such it is still pretty in expensive for a good quality wheel.

Chris

aronhk_md
01-18-2011, 05:06 PM
Really cool Chris, and thats not bad price-wise really. I know so little about how to use the english wheel other than knowing WHAT it is used for. But just that is enough that I'd love to have one. I have walked past the ones at Harbor Freight many times and wondered if they'd be useful enough to even get started with.

But as of right now I have too many projects going to even think about making one. My TA is in a million pieces, and if I have any hope of getting her on the road by spring I'd better just concentrate on what I have going on already..........lol. Not to mention that funds are super tight right now. I also still need an argon tank and regulator for my mig.

In addition, I've given thought to POSSIBLY trying to paint her myself perhaps once the weather warms up. Probably wont unless I get someone with experience to help though....lol.

P.S. - Its NOT that I dont like lateral g net...the opposite in fact, but I still think you should bring a copy of this thread over to pro-touring.com....I think lots of guys over there would be inspired by the stuff you've done, whether its repairing that bellhousing or building your E-wheel. In fact, they have a section over there for fabrication stuff and I think lots of guys would really be intrigued.

01-19-2011, 11:18 AM
Thanks guys,

Aron I did not realize you needed the tank too.... that will set you back a little! I asked last time I was at my local Airgas and I think it was $220 out the door for a 80 sized bottle. Add around $85-125 for a reg and that hurts!

As for Pro Touring... I plan to start a thread over there. I was going to wait until I got rolling a little more but what the heck! I have a goo amount of progress so far... sort of.... :willy: (that's me going in circles FYI)

I am hoping to started on the first "true" car project tonight (if I don't end up having to working late). But like you said $$$ is tight so extra hours at work are not a bad thing.

After adding up the total investment I am pretty happy. The HF wheel goes for 349.99 (minus 20% with a coupon) then you have to add the lower anvils for another $119 (again minus 20% if you have another coupon) so the total minus the 20% is 375.96 plus tax. Sure you get the 2" radius lower anvil that I don't have but....

Talk to you soon,

Chris

Well I am out of town this week but I did have a chance to work on the nose a bit. I filled in the area where the front license plate would go. I wanted to get an idea of the shape I needed before I began working on any patterns.

Anyway,
Styro foam in place:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_1208.jpg

Close up:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_1209.jpg

I decided to use drywall joint compound since I had it and this will not be going on the car ever...
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_1210.jpg

All mudded up:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_1213.jpg

I think I will post the final shaped pics in another post here.

ccm399
01-25-2011, 07:47 PM
Final shaped pics, I used a razor blade as the joint compound was setting up to get a rough shape. Less sanding that way! Notice I am using the tape trick I picked up on here to make sure the body line is straight....
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_1215.jpg

After a little sanding:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_1216.jpg

And another:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_1217.jpg

Now I can start making the patterns I need. Sorry the white does not have better contrast to show the shape but hopefully you get the idea.

Stay tuned.

01-25-2011, 08:03 PM
Hey! I was wondering where my container of cool whip went! Had a piece of pie ready to go and looked all over the fridge.......

So................what are you making a pattern for? Interesting that you are filling in the license plate area because I am likely filling in the openings for the fake valence on my new one piece fiberglass front end. Might have to follow your lead and fill in that plate area too!

ccm399
01-25-2011, 08:08 PM
That's funny right there.... As a matter of fact I stole the container from the cupboard and my wife was like do you want the lid? I said sure throw it down (not really knowing why I would need it). Anyway, I ended up citting it up for may "bondo spreader".

As for what I need the patterns for well.... stay tuned for that one. I really like the way filling in that area makes the nose look more "finished". Anvil did the same thing on there nose which is beautiful!

Chris

aronhk_md
01-25-2011, 08:38 PM
Hmmm....guess I didnt notice Anvil's change. Good catch on the detail. Part of me probably said......oh........a $1000 fiberglass nose with a layer of carbon fiber? Next item to look at..........

Still their stuff is beautifully executed. That formula hood looks like glass. Even if I could afford it though I wouldnt buy.......think the carbon fiber exposed exterior panels on a muscle car.....even pro-touring.....looks sorta passe.

ccm399
01-25-2011, 08:54 PM
Yeah I thought the same thing, a Fiberglass nose with a layer of carbon I will be paining over. They really should offer the nose in non carbon too. Who knows maybe since I looked they have not sure.

I think the exposed carbon look done right is OK. Not my cup of tea but two that come to mind are Ty's Freedom Bird and Mary Posey's 2nd gen Camaro. Both have a small amount of carbon showing. Very tastefully done.

Chris

aronhk_md
01-25-2011, 09:04 PM
I keep saying the same...they are missing the boat by not offering those excellent parts in just fiberglass too. Maybe they think they wont appear as exclusive. I feel the same....I like Ty's bird, BUT.....not my thing. I'd much rather have the nice carbon fiber dash panel NOT A TA made for him. If you havent seen it he did a thread on that dash buildover on pro-touring.

I am DYING to make a custom console with gauge pods and cup holders built in. Something sleek and stylish. Heck, make one and use it as a mold and I could probably sell copies to tons of camaro and bird owners. Its a badly needed custom item NOBODY is making. Wish I knew more about how to make fiberglass molds/parts. I understand how its done, but dont have the experience to really do it.

I am actually going the LS engine route. "Main Stream" I know but you just can't beat 'em for ease of getting power and/or parts! The thought has crossed my mind to go all Pontiac and it may happen (doubtful but maybe). If I do I will be fabbing my own intake for the EFI system for sure. I probably will fab my own for the LS too but time will tell.

Thanks again for the heads up.

87ss I really haven't done all that much yet.

But as for my background, Growing up my Dad was a carpenter so I started working with my hands at a very young age. In High School I took various wood and metal working classes and also went to the local trade school for auto mechanics. Jr year I got a job at the local machine shop (Medina Auto Parts) and I worked as an automotive machinist for about 15 years. I worked for other shops too including Mark Pawuk racing where I was Head Engine builder for a short time. During that time I also worked part time at Pro Street Chassis in Norton. I got the job at Pro Street because of the Drag car I had built in my Dad's garage.

So I have pretty much done most anything car related at one point or another... except upholstery.

Fabrication just comes naturally to me. I can "see" what I want to build in my mind then build it. I would say it is a God given talent. Not that I have not had to practice and work at things but fabrication comes easier to me then other things do.

Aron, I have to keep you guessing man! :) Stay tuned.

Rome wasnt built in a day they say. Had to keep telling myself that today when I spent 6 hours removing 4 ball joints. SOB's would not loosen up with an 8 lb sledge, two ball joint forks and plenty of heat. This was on the subframe that had the VBP suspension (transverse leafspring setup) on it that will be going on my car . It had only been assembled for 4 years, never used but did sit outside, and I destroyed 4 like new Moog ball joints removing them.

Now I have to remove the original A-arms on the TA, and even though they were completely redone 8 years ago or so I'm DREADING it.

I have been working on this for some time now it does not show any of the "special" things I want to do with the nose but the hood is close to what I am after. My pencil drawing did not transfer to PS as well as I would have liked but it is close. It looks much better in the pencil drawing as the openings are a bit taller.

The hood is meant to look like a '69 Trans-Am on steroids.

Ok, flash back time here....

My drag car from "back in the day",

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/89TRANSAMRACECAR.jpg

The power.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/DCP_2998.jpg

The engine is not all that "pretty" but with 722hp at the flywheel (all motor no spray) so it has the "go" part down pretty well.

The car was built in my Dad's garage, my boss at the time and I did the back half chassis work, I did all the aluminum (without a brake). Then after the first season I front halved the car myself. Mind you I was 20 or 21 at the time so some of the work was not all that "polished" looking (the wiring for example).

After a few years we put the fiberglass clip and doors on it and added the "Pro Mod" wing. Actually that wing IS a Pro Mod wing... we pulled templates for it off of Bill Kulhman's (SP?) 200 MPH Camaro. That was really cool.

The engine was a 380 CID SBC with Trickflow 18* Aluminum heads. I did all the port work in the manifold and heads along with all the machine work (save balancing), assembly and Dyno testing personally. Oh, I built the 850 alcohol carb too (including the booster change, metering block fuel curve work and air bleeds).

Come to think of it the only thing we did not build was the transmission. I either personally built the parts or was very involved in the process (wing and paint for example). My uncle actually laid the paint down. I can remember blocking on that car for HOURS on top of HOURS.... Can't wait to do that again... :P

Thanks for taking a trip down memory lane with me. Back to the project at hand...

No not really...

Work has me going crazy and then any time I have had to "myself" has been used up on spring projects around the house. Unfortunately we are looking at replacing the siding on our house this year so we are going to be gearing up for that project soon.

I hope to have some time here and there to work on it.

Thanks for checking, I'll post an update as soon as I have one.

Ok, so the new update is there is still no update... The wife and I are working on re-siding our house and boy has that turned into a big ol' can of worms....

Ended up having to tear apart the front wall to replace some water damaged wood and OSB. Seems the person who last sided the house was not familiar with how water flows... :willy:

Anyway, if you think cars are expensive.... WOW! Don't start a house project...:wow:

Oh, I did pick up a Iwata LPH-80 off eBay for a screamin good deal. I also found an LPH-400 locally on CL a few months back and so now all I need is a primer gun and I will be set!

Small set back.... Well maybe not so small. While working on the house Saturday I injured my right eye pretty bad. We have an appointment Wednesday afternoon for another ultrasound scan of the eye to try to determine if any damage was done to the retina.

So that puts the house project on hold which of course puts the car project back as well. Not complaining though, I still have one good eye for sure and I am still alive! Lord willing I will be able to regain sight in my right eye. Tiem will tell on that.

Hi guys,

Sorry for the delay in updating you all. Having to be in a 100% head down position for 5 full days does not lead itself to using a laptop. Well not when you are 6'6" tall and the special chair you can rent for this type of recovery doesn't fit you so well anyway...

So the surgery went well and yesterday's follow up appointment showed good healing progress so the Doc took me off face down positioning! :willy: You would be surprised how hard it is to hold you head vertical after 5 days of holding it down... My balance was off and everything! Anyway, hopefully in three weeks we can start removing stitches and such but is it going to take 6-8 weeks for the gas bubble in my eye to fully go away so that will delay getting full vision (ie new glasses) until that little guy is completely gone. Slow and steady though.

Thanks for all the thought and prayer guys. Hopefully sometime soon you can check in for actual updates on the CAR!!!

Hi all,

Sorry for the long delay here and thank you for all the thought and prayers. Things are going as good as can be expected. The last doctors appointment they lifted my weight restrictions and such so I have been spending every available second trying to get caught up on the house project!

So as far as the eye goes the best news is the retina is fully attached and healing nicely. The bad news is that some time after the second surgery a small bleed happened in the eye and that opacified (sp?) the man made lens the doctors put in as part of the second surgery. So that means that they will have to go in and clean the lens for me to be able to see.

So right now I have very little vision out of that eye but I am hopeful that once the lens is clean I will be good to go! I can see light and movement but that is about all. To give you an idea how cloudy the lens is from the bleeder, the doc couldn't even see through parts of it with his BRIGHT light and scopes! He could see part of the retina but he had to send me to ultrasound to make 100% sure the whole retina was attached.

We have an appointment October 7th to hopefully get some stitches out and get the lens cleaned. I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks again,

Chris

Another Surgery....

Well I had another surgery Thursday on my eye. It sounds like it went well and the docs are pleased with the progress but at this point the vision I will have in that eye remains a moving target. The doc was a little evasive when we asked what the prognosis for sight was. They had to go in an remove some scar tissue that had formed on the retina and I guess the tissues were pulling in such a way that the retina now has folds in it... which is not good. So they have a new LARGE gas bubble in my eye and I am typing this while sitting face down. I will be in face down recovery until at least Tuesday (hopefully NOT longer!!!).

Just went I thought I might be able to get back to working on the car too...

Stay tuned, someday I will update this thread with some progress on the car!

So the doc says things are looking good but as with before we have to wait and see how the eye heals. We are praying that the scar tissue does NOT come back! The good thing is this time I can actually see out of the eye (limited but MUCH better than when the lens was cloudy!) so I will know if and/or when the tissue starts to form.

So on to the car stuff... at least as much of it as I can do now. I got a $25 off coupon from Summit Racing this week so I am search through the website to try to find something to "save money" on... I think I will pickup a Tubing notcher or possible a Devilbiss air dryer/filter unit. I suppose I will technically need both of them in the future but I think I will need the tubing notcher first.

Too bad it is too soon to be buying parts for her! Tools are never bad though!

Darn Summit....

ccm399

Chris

aronhk_md
10-29-2011, 01:00 AM
well, a milk jug weighs about 7 lbs, and a plan weighs nothing more than the paper you write it on or the computer you use. lol. So get the plan done. Then when the doc lifts your restrictions start on the car already...lol. I love your tool time stuff, but I want to see action on the car even more. lol

ccm399
10-29-2011, 06:17 AM
That makes two of us!

Good idea though. I'll work on that.

Actually I have been working on suspension pickup points and such. Plus as soon as I get the go ahead from the Doc (and after I button up a couple loose ends on the house project) I plan to get back into making the aluminum nose. I figure I need to practice TIG welding with one eye before then though! I may go out and try my hand at that sometime soon. My wife is freaked out about that idea though... She thinks the arc will somehow damage the eye's healing process.... I told her I was still planning on wearing my welding helmet! LOL.

aronhk_md
10-29-2011, 09:19 AM
well, since the eye is fragile maybe you can wear a patch and do it with one eye only. Then she'll be happy.

ccm399
11-25-2011, 12:11 PM
Well I finally got to get out in the garage and try one eyed TIG welding...

Not too bad I just had to adjust my start up technique. I typically start the arc then bring the rod into the puddle. I found without depth perception it is easier/more consistent to place the rod FIRST then pull it back a little then start the arc. This way I know where I am when I want to dig the rod.

My first time, I struck the arc and though "hey that doesn't look all that different.... then I went to dig the rod and was about 2-3 times farther away than it looked!

I did dig tungsten a couple times but after about 2-3 rods I was doing much better. I probably ran 4 rods total and by the end of the fourth rod I was doing pretty decent.

I hope to be able to get back to work on the nose soon.

Wow. I take a few months off the site and look what happens. Sorry to hear about your eye Chris. I had my own eye accident earlier this year. Was using a wire brush on a grinder under the car. One of the wires came off and went under my saftey glasses and impaled my eys. I had to have surgery but it only took a couple of stitches. Nothing like your accident.

I will wear goggles next time I wire brush anything. It makes you realize just how fragile we really are. One minute you fine and the next. Wham. Hang in there and a hope you heal quickly and fully.

Thanks guys! It is good to actually be "working" again. Even though it was just practice...

Sight out of the eye is not so good right now, the retina is still swollen but the doc has me on drops every two hours (when awake) to try to get that resolved. I can see shapes and movement but detail is a no go. I have another appointment on the 6th to see how things are progressing.

Ty, to answer your question specifically the doc says its too early to tell yet. Too much swelling and still too many variables. For instance, they are not 100% sure we are done with surgeries. I know I am in good hands at Cole Eye, and better yet I know God has a plan for my recovery and I gave this over to him in the ambulance ride to the Cleveland Clinic on day one.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

The fronts are in pretty darn nice shape and the rears are good enough to get some time on the car before needing to buy new rubber. Bret gave me a heck of a deal on the tires and even shipped them to me!

I was out in the garage all last weekend building my Dad a custom wood rack for his new wood shop. It turned out really nice (I forgot pics though). I built three main racks that we lag bolted to the studs of the wall. They will accept 1"x2" rectangular tubing for the wood. He can slip in the 12 tubes in 1' increments to give him tons of options for storing lumber. Felt good to be working with my hands again.

Nice shop man. I've always wanted at least a 40x60. Settled for a 27x44 that's attached to my house for now.

Thanks guys.

Lots of work but I am sure it will be worth all the effort in the end. I won't have "finished" pictures for years but I will keep posting as I get some major milestones accomplished. I plan to get the Bridgeport and Compressor setup tomorrow so I'll probably post up some pics of that. Hopefully I can get a bench built too.

Happy Thanksgiving!

So I had a little time to look over the car now that it is in the barn. It turns out that the quarter panels are indeed skins... and NOT properly installed skins at that.

It turns out they lapped the skins over the stock panels about 12" or so AND only tacked the panel on every inch or so. On the plus side that will make removal easier! :willy:

Good times...

Man has it been a LONG time since I could post an update!!!

Good news I was actually able to work IN the barn rather than ON it! :topic:

So I removed the rear axle and the sub-frame:

After that I built a cart for the body:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_4556_zps60e650f5.jpg (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/ccm399/media/Firebird/DSC_4556_zps60e650f5.jpg.html)

Then I took off the remaining bolt on stuff:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_4558_zps9b2d5479.jpg (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/ccm399/media/Firebird/DSC_4558_zps9b2d5479.jpg.html)

Then started on those 1/4 skins:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_4560_zpse0ff194a.jpg (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/ccm399/media/Firebird/DSC_4560_zpse0ff194a.jpg.html)

Not pretty!

ccm399

Couple more of the 1/4 skin:

Close Up:

As you can see they stitched the skin with a tack weld every inch or so. Great work there... Not so much. I am swamped at work and I have a couple side jobs I have to work on so progress will once again be slow. But hey at least I got to work on her!

Love the quality work there!!!! Make sure to brace up the rear before you cut off that great metal work!!

Thanks Rick, I was wondering about that. I have only seen people (shops on here) brace the cars up when the floor is removed. I am not intending on remove the floor just yet.

The other thing I was hoping for is maybe I could correct the 1/4 - 5/16 inch of tweak the body has before re-welding those panels back on. When I dropped the front sub frame there was a 5/16 thick piece of steel between the front mount and the body. When I built my cart I made sure the mounting points were all exactly the same length (height) and when I set the body on the cart that same mounting point is a heavy 1/4 off the cart's post. The floor in my shop was poured level and i have checked it specifically in the spot the car is in and it is good.

I do plan to go get my Dad's laser and double check all the pad heights just to be 100% sure before attempting to correct anything.

Good to be working on it again though!

Why brace the car before the quarter is pulled off? Like Chris, I thought that was only done when a structural part is removed. Is the quarter more structural than I think it is?

Glad to see you starting back on the car, Chris. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about it if you are just doing a skin. If its out of whack it was done long before you got it.

I've seen some cars with the 5/16" biscuits up front stock. Just make sure your doors and trunk shut ok before than after the work is done.

Well if he is just changing out the qtrs then yes you would not need to brace it up. But if it was me doing this job I would see what needs to be replaced first, and looking at the pictures it looks like more then just the qtrs? If so I would wack off all the bad metal first, so bracing or body jig would be mandatory for me.

It will for SURE be more than just the quarters for sure. I want to get them off so I can see what I am working with though.

Thank you for clearing up what you were meaning. Before I am done the floor and probably most of the firewall will be gone.

The tail panel is SHOT too. The rockers are not great. Inner wheel houses are getting rebuilt either way so that's not an issue.

I am sure before it's all over I will have to brace her up.

I should be able to get some work done on it this weekend.

You will need to build one of these then!! Of course for a 2nd gen!!

Yeah, there is something like that in my future for sure.

Probably a little close to a chassis type table like RS and the other big boys have. After my car is done I plan to do some chassis work on the side too so it won't be a once and done investment. We'll see though.

My car will be getting a new custom full chassis and new floor, firewall, wheel wheels ETC) so most of the bad metal will be going away by default. I plan to get the 1/4's off her tomorrow. Then I can better plan how to move forward.

Rick, thanks again for your input. It is most helpful!

More soon!

your gonna need a table if you have floors and tail going in. Just a simple twin beam will serve you well too.

Ok, so the can-of-worms has OFFICIALLY been opened....

Passenger side quarter skin removed:

Drivers side skin and outer wheel house removed:

Found this little "gem" waiting for me on the passenger side:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_4571_zps141fb7a7.jpg (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/ccm399/media/Firebird/DSC_4571_zps141fb7a7.jpg.html)

It was covering some rocker damage:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/ccm399/Firebird/DSC_4573_zpsc79a68ab.jpg (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/ccm399/media/Firebird/DSC_4573_zpsc79a68ab.jpg.html)

The only thing I can figure is someone must have driven over a curb or something like that at some point. Weird damage. It actually looks liked they must have backed over it as the inner rocker structure is pushed up and forward. Oh well that stuff was all going any way.

ccm399

So at this point I am torn....

Plan "a" would be continue cutting until all the metal I don't need is removed giving me access to the reaming metal for blasting and repair.

Plan "b" would be patch and repair a little at a time as I go. Then blast the whole thing (repairs and all) when all the unneeded metal is out of the way.

I am leaning toward plan "a" but any input you guys could give would be helpful.

At this point there are still two unknowns. The biggest unknown is the roof. While nothing *looks* like it would be an issue this car is proving once again that bondo can cover a LOT of ugliness. The other unknown is the doors but again not a huge deal there... Worst case I buy skins or look for replacement doors. The roof and a-pillars are my biggest concern for now.

Thanks guys!

Chris

blast first, then buy yourself a small blaster for any cavities or touch ups down the road. You have no idea how much bondo could be lurking, i had way more on my car than i ever thought. just look at my build thread.

ccm399
12-06-2013, 09:16 AM
Agreed on the bondo hiding... Thanks Scott.

I might have to see about making a table and mounting her to it then proceed cutting her up. In looking at pics on this site and others I have no idea how I would attach the car to the table though. The rockers are needing replaced and the whole floor is getting removed as it the tail panel. That doesn't leave much to attach to a table.

I think I will be able to sneak out there tomorrow for some time and continue the process. I'll figure something out.

More soon.

I see that Goodmark offers this panel so that's good. The door jams on the other hand... not so much (so far in my searching).

So a was able to work on the car for a couple hours on Saturday. I cut out the panel with the trunk hinges on it (shown in the previous pics). On the plus side the rot pretty much stopped with the top panel the inner panel is OK!

I also made some spacers to start to figure out the flush mounting of the rear glass. Looks like about 1/2 - 5/8" should do the trick. I may go ahead and make a new outer panel from scratch as I think I am going to re-work the hinge area and filler panel areas anyway.

I will try to get some pics tonight.
