I bought a 1996 Cheyenne SWB (V6/5spd) for daily driver duty, but there seems to be an issue with the idling of the truck. The engine surges and the RPMs jump up then drop back down. Sometimes the high/low idling will last for 20+ seconds. Any ideas what could be causing this? My buddy was the previous owner and its always done this from what I can remember.

Idle Air Control Valve would be the first ting id look at. Can you pull any trouble codes at all from it?

yeah, sounds like a dirty TB. I'd clean it out real good and do a re-learn on it.
But if its been doing it for awhile it could be a number of things.
Let me know if you want to bring it by the shop. I can have my GM guy take a look at it.

Vince I may have to take you up on that offer. I really don't have time to mess with it myself.

The IAC as previously mentioned, also the throttle position sensor should be checked out.
