Hey all -

I'm always fascinated by checking out how people have assembled / organized / tricked out thier shops and garages, and now we're building a new shop on our show, V8TV. I'm looking for inspiraton.

Our place is modest; a basic pole-barn that is split into 3rds. The 1st third is the machine area with some cutting tools, engine hoists, etc. It's a working farm shop, so it's not pretty, but it sure as hell works.

The second bay is a makeshift paint / prime booth, your basic plywood box with basic cross-draft ventilation.

Those two bays are pre-exisiting; we're now building the 3rd bay, which is where we'll be doing most of the shooting for the show.

The new bay is not real big, (20'x30'), but it sure beats a 2-car garage. And it's ours.

The highlights are an Eagle 2-post lift, floor coating coming from Motor City Flooring (Muscle Gloss), some welders and plasma cutters from HTP, and an IR radiant heater from Space-Ray. We hope to hang that sucker tomorrow.

I've attached a couple renderings of the place... they're simple guides to the layout. Real photos to come.

I'd love to check out photos of other shops and ideas for storage and cool tools and tricks that anyone may have come up with. I think it may make a cool episode story... a bunch of killer shop tricks.

So let's see 'em!

Here is a pic of my garage taken last summer. It's still under construction and only used for storage. I have 7 vehicles in it right now.

It's 32x54 with 10 foot side walls. I'm lucky that the zoning in the town I live in limits building size only on the size of my lot (no absolute limit). The center 1/3 has scissor trusses to allow a 2-post lift. Another 1/3 will be walled off as a smaller shop space that will be easier to heat in the winter. The remaining 1/3 will be able to be used as my paint booth (with a temporary wall).

If you want real garage porn you need to visit www.garagejunkies.net

Have plenty of tissues handy. :D

Hey Hey Hey, since we are are thinking size matters here, which of course it does, I forgot to add that our garage is 24 x 60 with 10ft side walls as well. As you can tell we have 4, 10 x 10 doors (which allows us to roll the lift out side if needed) two on each end with drive through technology. I can pull my tow vehical (the mint 78 ford van in the background of the pic) and a 25 ft trailer straight in and shut the doors. Then when it is time to leave, just open the back door, and pull out.

Thanks for starting this thread. This is what I am going through right now. I am in the middle of a mini-remodel on my detached 25x35 workshop. The man that built my house first built the shop and lived in it while the house was going up. So, it is fully insulated, heated/cooled, well wired (cable/phone 220/110, etc) and has a full bath (10x5). The downside is he finished it inside with OSB painted white and the bathroom was only marginal.

So...enter my current project. We are just putting the final touches on the bathroom. I installed a 32x32 shower and built a custom vanity using a deep sink and oversize counter surrounded with formica matching the counter top as side and back splash. The idea is to be nice enough looking to pass for a standard guest bathroom, but rugged and water proof enough to hold up to shop greese, grime, etc.

A bathroom is a MUST in your workshop and in my opinion should be the first thing you really plan for.

NEXT we figure out the work bench/cabinet/storage, etc. My wife came up with an excellent idea last night that I am running with now.

A couple of things to consider. A good way to complete a budget build is by using old counter tops and cabinets from a remodeled kitchen. Second, you can buy the preformed counter top from the hardware store (superior to just a rough old plywood work surface) and build your bench from that.

My ceiling it too low for a lift but we should be able to get most everything else crammed in.

My wife parks in the house garage (usually) so there is room to store one other car in the house garage. That leaves room for no more than one project car at a time. That's enough for me.

Also having to build the shop "baby safe" so my son can come out and play while I tinker. I hope to get a small workspace in one corner when complete to put a pc, printer, and file area for setting up and moving ebay items and general auto forum chat while working in the shop.

No sense taking any pictures right now until it is done. I am sure I will post those up soon as I am taking the week off after Christmas to finish it up.

Well here are the specs on my Toy Box. 32W x 56L x 14H insulated with water and a drain in the 'wash area'. It has the provisions for a full restroom with toilet and shower, as well as footings for a two post lift. Like cars...a garage is never done. After a layoff (and now much less pay), as well as a 6 month old son, money isn't flowing like it used to.

There is also coax, and cat5's for the phone, alarm, DSL, etc.

Under construction.

My garage isn't very big but I figured I'd spruce it up a bit by creating an environment my car would feel comfortable in. Some brick paneling, some paint, signs and antiqes... viola!

Hauln, that is a nice looking building. Did you assemble it yourself? What manufacturer's steel building is that?

We have some property up north where we plan to put a 40x60 to keep some of our lesser-used toys in and my only worry with steel buildings is the tales I hear of "tin snip bandits" simply cutting their way in...Of course if someone wants to get in, they are gonna get in, but I don't want to make it any easier for them, either...I was thinking about getting one with extra-thick steel at least on the lower sections...

I had contracted it to a local place that does a lot of buildings in my area, as I didn't have the time nor the experience. I can't say enough about the quality. I get compliments all the time, especially from guys in the construction trade.

If someone wanted in, it would be easiest to bust out a door. (That is what alarms are for.... ;) ) All the steel on my building is screwed on (versus nailed), but with the finished interior, there are so many stringers that getting in through a wall would be tough.

My walls look like this on the outer side.
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/3811/dcp04186kb.th.jpg (http://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dcp04186kb.jpg)

Then it was insulated.
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4726/dcp04365qz.th.jpg (http://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dcp04365qz.jpg)

Before the interior steel, they ran another set of stringers for the inside steel to attach to. (Hard to see in this pic)
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/1817/dcp04422qy.th.jpg (http://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dcp04422qy.jpg)

Like you stated, if they want in...they'll find a way. If the gun range in the back yard doesn't deter them, maybe the trained sniper next door will?

Thanks again and good luck!

This is were my 94 B4C camaro resided prior to relocating to Colorado. Thats a 911 twin turbo lower left, my fathers 91 quasar blue ZR-1 upper left, My B4C on the upper right, and a dailey driver boxster S lower right...oh yeah, CL55 is in view on the left. the other pic is of the ML55 on the left, denali pick-up and the CL55.

good mentor to have. :hail: My next garage will be very similar with teh 1st bay being a fabrication bay. He paid almost what I paid for the B4C back in 94 in gas guszzler and luxery tax on the 911 twin turbo. thats the second fastest car I've ever driven. The first...my rotisserie <sp?> restoration of a highly modified 1990 dodge daytona shelby VNT..last pic. I miss that car, sold it for teh CTS V. needed four doors for the new bambino.

Just got a load from Homedepot last night and am headed out this a.m. to start framing up the workshop side. We just finished the bathroom remodel and I am very happy with it. It turned out so nice that I don't want to put that deep sink into regular shop action. So, it is dual plumbed already (set up to put a sink on either side of the wall). I am dropping a second sink with the sole purpose of being allowed to get filthy dirty on the other side.

I am starting out by framing a 4'x4' closet with a 3.0 door to house the air compressor. Not sure yet how I am going to vent it, or if I will just leave the upper 2' open (short of the framing studs). I am hoping to use the exterior walls to hold the hose real, drier, and a box with all my common air equipment and air oil, etc.

I am also framing in a 4' wide office/desk to T off and around to the main workbench. Anyway, as of this moment it is a mess out there with $600 in drywall, 2x4s and other supplies stacked in the middle from last night. So...off I go to spend the day Measuring TWICE, and cutting once. However, in my case it is more like measure five or six times, then cut, grind, shave, pound and force fit the pieces until it looks okay. Then, there is always a dab of caulk to finish off what I couldn't cut straight!

On the floor, I am now convinced I will do the simple cheap 12"x12" sticky tile in the bathroom (black & white) checker board. Then in the main shop once everything is installed I will do the floor in Epoxy paint like Groovyjay!

Thanks :D

It is threads like these that helped me chose my building and design plan. I researched, asked questions, looked at everyone's shops, etc. My biggest fear was to say "I wish I would've done _____ differently" when I was done. I spoke to a lot of people and asked what they liked and hated about their buildings, as well as what they would do differently. Just like a custom car project, make sure you build it the way you want. Don't let others sway you into doing something that won't work for you.

The other big thing is be realistic in what you are going to do in your garage. Some guys fabricate, some wrench, some just store stuff, etc.

Do you know what he single most popular response is to the question "What would you do differently?"

Build it bigger.

Randy

PS - Being the geek I am, I have pics of every step from dropping the trees (27 Oaks), digging out the stumps, the first post, the first piece of siding, etc. , all the way to filling it up with toys. If there is anything specific, just let me know.

I cleaned up the "shed" today -- and the 55.... I'm building this car for a buddy that had a massive stroke. His wife rented a van and is bringing him over so he can spend some time with his car - in order to help rebuild his memory... and to get him out of the house. He's wheelchair bound now. So cleaned everything up - got the car on the ground... and prepared to get ready. Then I thought - gee - it hasn't looked this good for a long time - so took some pixs.

Here are a few pictures of the shop that I will be breaking ground on in the spring. It is a 22x48 foot shop with a full second floor studio apartment that will be used for a home office / man cave. I would love for the shop to be larger but what you don't see in the pictures are all the trees in the back yard that the wife will not allow me to cut down. The bump out on the side is for the enclosed staircase. The plan is to put a make shift paint booth and a two post portable lift from MaxJax. The model was done in SketchUp (by Google). It is the easiest 3d program to learn. With a few hours of tutorials from the website, you will have the basics down. I have been using this program for years since I am an architect by trade. Prior to going to school, I worked at a body shop performing frame off restorations on street rods and muscle cars. Once the shop is completed, I will get back to finishing my 68 camaro. Hope you guys enjoy the pics.

You should have seen the look on his (Ricks) face when we rolled him in - and there sits his car... (He has several - but this was his only "build"). That look and acknowledgment that he knew what was going on - was priceless. I agree with you... Activity both physical, and mental, is what will help the most.

That's excellent. So many times we see people laid up in beds in hospitals, but I agree - get 'em out and close to an environment they like and it would work wonders. Heck, I get sick just walking though hospitals because of the thought of having to stay in one. Best of luck to Rick, and have a great holiday season!

Thanks for the kind comments. I'll try to post some more photos soon.

Greg - the mill and lathe are very humbling for a wanna be machinist. They are great for converting money into chips.

Garage Dog - the 356 should be done sometime this year. Nothing as radical as your 356 project. What doesn't show, is the new red leather interior, and the new trick 356 Porsche engine. When finished, it will be a fairly nice restomod with EFI. It is amazing how much money you can spend trying to get close to 200 hp out of 1883 cc's. Probably been cheaper to put an LS motor in the back seat!

I was just house hunting. I told my realtor that I wanted a two car garage with a bedroom and kitchen. she laughed until I told her I was serious. Anything in my price range didn't work for me, so I went to plan "B".

I found a small ranch with a one car attached. before I put an offer in, I went down to city hall just to make sure I had enough setback and land to add on. it all looked good so I signed my P&S yesterday.

If I have enough money after I actually move in, I will hopefully be pouring the form for a 12' wide, by about 20' deep addition to the garage within a couple of months. :woot:

I have been working on my 2 car garage off and on since we moved here last year. I am starting to get it where I want it. Today I am going to build a folding work table that will go next to my shop vac. I am thinking I will throw another peg board up behind the foldable bench.
Most of the items are craiglist shelves and a free work bench my father gave me. Although, I wish I had about 10x this amount space, I am trying to work with what I have for now. Once I get the parts installed on the car it should free up a lot of space.

Best piece of gear in my shed! No messy crap flying all over the shop when making a cut... super quiet... super accurate! I still own a 14" Raptor type saw -- and a abrasive disc saw. They all have their place. I rarely (once a year?) use the Raptor/abrasive saws. I use the cold cut almost daily.

You do have to have different blades for different materials! Aluminum - Stainless - Mild steel.... but it only takes a minute or two to change them out.

My Hyd-Mech cold cut saw is only a 9" --- and only miters one direction. This saw is 12.5" and miters both directions. Now that I have it -- I'll NEVER use the Raptor type saw as it was only used for the occasional larger diameter stuff. The new saw is capable of handling everything I'm going to cut.

Lol I was sold before this speech but now I must. I need to do some compound angles and in thinking I can get pretty close cutting one wall at a time with a good cold saw. 2x3 or 2x4 would be max is ever need to cut so I'm thinking a saw even smaller than your new one may work. We will see. I'm dreading using a cutoff wheel to make these cuts and I do have some money. Just was hoping to use it for more parts.

Brian --- I wouldn't buy these kinds of tools if you're only going to ever build one or two cars over a 15 or 20 year period. I've been doing this stuff for some 40 years now... and have built or heavily modified at least a dozen or more cars. You can buy some awfully nice parts with what these tools run. I'm lucky that I have the space and time... and I value this kind of stuff even if it's not really practical to own. I know guys that have built nicer cars and don't own much more than a hacksaw...

For the amount of use most people would get out of a saw -- I'd buy a decent band saw --- even a portable one.... but mostly a decent mitering horizontal one.

I've got my money's worth out of my little Jet 1/2" blade horizontal saw. Improved accuracy and quicker setup to cut angles are my new desires.

This one or it's big brother might be worth the extra money and still less than the cold saw GW just bought: http://www.grizzly.com/products/6-x-9-1-2-Swivel-Metal-Cutting-Bandsaw/G0614

Thanks for all of the compliments.
The Grand National is all original with only 18K miles, so that bay is mainly for "parking". The silver GS is getting ready to go to the Fall Fort Worth GoodGuys autocross, so there has been some "work" going on in that bay. I am building a 65 Skylark track day/autocross car from the ground up, so that bay will have the most work in the next couple of years.
The building is stick framed from 2x6s, air conditioned, insulated with cellulose/spray foam, and matches the style of the house. My business is pre-engineered metal buildings, but that style of building would not work in my sub-division. No pole barns or poll barns here! I designed it on our CAD program, laying out the equipment, plugs, air drops, etc. I started designing at three bays, and my wife said I should go to four. Some times you just don't argue.

What size ceilings do you have? What did you have to do for your garage door to lift over the second car on top of the lift?

What size ceilings do you have? What did you have to do for your garage door to lift over the second car on top of the lift?

The overall ceiling is just under 12' I think it measured 140"

The garage door I removed the standard motor and low hanging tracks, installed a liftmaster wall mounted motor and spring, and re-routed the tracks up higher to the ceiling. My buddy is on garage journal steady and gave me the idea. The door does not open fully, but it opens about 90%. (The bottom of the door hangs down from the opening about 12") But theres more than enough room to drive a car in. Maybe even an SUV.

The old workshop or showroom debate will go on forever. I guess everybody's got to hit their own sweet spot in terms of how they want to use the place and how they'd like it to look.

Mine is reasonably well known on the internets. If it's got a virtue, it's that I did a lot with a small space and a small budget. I'm at 20x20 and $3,500. I did everything myself, including setting the tile and digging the pit for the lift. Everything in the place is second-hand, re-purposed or home-made.

I also made a website for it: http://www.12-gaugegarage.com (This is not spam. I don't make any money off of the website and pay for it out of my own pocket.)

But it does go back to clean very quickly -- that's the real accomplishment of it, I think. I finally took the time to work out a place for everything to go when It's not being used.

In practice, it makes a huge difference not having to spend so much time looking for things you've misplaced. I spent years doing that.

Thanks, guys!

I don't want to promote too much here. But there's a video made by Petrolicious that shows the lift in use. You've got to put up with me yapping and with everything being all cleaned up for the shoot -- oh, and an old German car, too. But aside from all that...

The funny thing about the 'black thing' is: I picked it up second-hand -- it had never been cleaned up or restored. It had just been sitting around... for about 60 years. I plugged it in and was immediately able to dial my cell phone. It made me wonder: what's so great about today's smart phones? Are they going to be able to effortlessly connect to the network 60+ years from now?

The old things were built like tanks. And I never have to wonder where I set the cell phone down when I hear it ringing.

While the chevelle is away I got started on finishing mine. It was open walled. I ran copper airline throughout, insulated and am starting on sheetrocking it now. This next year I will move the compressor outside to keep it quiet. It already had plenty of 110 and a couple of 220 has phone and cable as well.

My shop has been a 13 year long project, and is still evolving...I'm not sure it'll ever be done. I have in my mind what I want it to end up being, but life just keeps getting in the way so to speak.

It started off at a 36x50 full concrete foundation, stick framed outbuilding built back in 2001.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/Outbuildingphotos0011-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Outbuildingphotos0011-1.jpg.html)

The first couple of years while I was absorbing the initial build costs, it was basically a boat and yard equipment storage facility.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/garagemahal5.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/garagemahal5.jpg.html)

I did use spray in foam insulation and hung a 4 ton heat pump from the trusses to heat and cool the space.

About 3 years ago now I guess I finally got to add a two post lift to the shop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/IMG00061-20101116-1921.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/IMG00061-20101116-1921.jpg.html)

Then I had to change things up and built an apartment in the back of the shop for my Dad to live in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01529.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01529.jpg.html)

I was able to put a loft up above the apartment to gain back some of the storage I lost by the addition. this picture was taken from up in the loft. What a mess...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01530.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01530.jpg.html)

I also had to move the lift back about 10 feet. did that project by myself without taking the lift apart. Yes, there were a couple of pucker moments...at one point my Dad went back into his apartment and said "I can't watch this".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/Luckydog%20Ranch/DSC01577.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/Luckydog%20Ranch/DSC01577.jpg.html)

I now have a lot of pictures of stuff I'm working on in the shop, but none show much of the actual shop itself. It's actually pretty clean right now and will take some updated pictures of it in it's current form soon.

What I'm struggling with now is finding and setting apart a "dirty work" space where I can put my welding, cutting and grinding tools and do my dirty work in to try to keep the rest of the shop halfway clean. The lift is a fantastic tool, I use it all the time. I don't think I'll ever be without one again. I need more cabinets to store away the parts and stuff I just can't part with and I need to pare down some of the yard equipment that I just don't use that much anymore to create more space. And lights...I need WAY more and better placed lights. Painting the walls white might help with light as well. Eventually I'll get it all set up like I want, but lately I've been doing more work in the shop...than on the shop...which is okay too.

Here's a couple picture of my ongoing garage project. It’s adjacent to my house and it’s 50’x100’ with (4) 12’x14’ roll up doors. There is also a parts mezzanine that sits on top of the cecilng for parts storage measures 12’x100’. Now I’m working organizing and outfitting the shop. The most recent addtions are the 2 post lift, compressor and air line plumbing as well as the 220 plugs for the welders.

I think I'm going to make a rolling fab bench up that I can mount a bench grinder, a drill press, vise, maybe hang my welding gear underneath it and be able to push it back against the wall when not using it, then be able to roll it out into the middle of the shop for the dirty work.

I finally finished my crib stands up today. I've got a couple of projects planned for this winter that require the car to be sitting level and at ride height while I need to get under neath it, so I needed to get these ready first.

Since I plan on using mine mostly for chassis setup and measuring purposes, I needed to build them a bit differently than a lot of guys have. I wanted to have the tops of my stands flat so that the tires sat up on them, not down in them. This will aid in letting me get the car sitting on a perfectly flat and level plane while up in the air enough so that I can get under it and I'll be able to turn the front tires left and right to check caster and what not.

Since I had an odd assortment of 2x4s and 2x6s on hand, I laid them out and cut them up to make these 18" long x 12" wide. Test stacked to make sure I cut them all right.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1Qx3Pv7q11g/UpYMqOtLrJI/AAAAAAAAKg8/5ZG5-iFt1as/w1213-h684-no/13+-+1

After nailing them together, I measured the track width and wheelbase on my car and marked the floor exactly in the center of my lift posts. Then carefully measured exactly where the center of all 4 tires will sit and marked places on the floor with tape to represent where the stands will sit. This will show me where to park the car before lifting it with the lift to set on the stands. My floor is not level as the sides fall toward the center where the drain is, so I then needed to shim the bottom of the stands to get all four of them plum and level with each other. This took a while but I finally got them all flat and square.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-gm4ukwvAGm4/Upu6qQlkMfI/AAAAAAAAKjw/lsxod7cfe1I/w1213-h684-no/13+-+1

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-oRKfQnZnTSY/Upu6vv0kbkI/AAAAAAAAKkQ/ZwKKi71IFoc/w1213-h684-no/13+-+1

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7xBRnJn6i3M/Upu6ztgVRAI/AAAAAAAAKkk/oAVnYOge9Yg/w1213-h684-no/13+-+1

I marked the stands so I'll know how to put them back in place and I'll clean the floor up real good and remark the tape where they go, then I'll be able to store them out of the way then put them back in exactly the same spots so the car will have a flat level spot to sit on and I'll still be able to get underneath it to make setup changes and adjustments. I'll also be able to set scales on these for four corner weighing and slip plates under the front tires for alignment settings.

I still have to rig up something to use for wheel chocks to keep the car from rolling and test place the car on them, but for the most part...they are ready to use.

^^^ That leveling trick is a good idea. Thanks

Thanks, I had to scratch my head a bit when it came time to start leveling. It's hard because if you change the height of one, it changes everything else. I had to find the highest stand, get it leveled, then raise the rest up to it's level while keeping them plumb and square. I think the most one was raised was 1/4-3/8s" but they were all off a little bit.

I can roll that pipe over any two of the stands now and it stays flat on the tops of them all the way across.

The hardest part might have been balancing that level on the round pipe for the photo opps though. :unibrow:

I also made a website for it: http://www.12-gaugegarage.com (This is not spam. I don't make any money off of the website and pay for it out of my own pocket.)

In practice, it makes a huge difference not having to spend so much time looking for things you've misplaced. I spent years doing that.

I don't have anything fancy (even though it was in Popular Mechanics after I Epoxy'd the Floor) & the pictures are on my Home Computer. Just a 1 Car Garage that used to be a CarPort. I walled it in, tore the old Flat Roof off, built my own trusses with a 12' center section & installed a Roll-Up Door. I put in a Rotary Revolution7 Lift so I can wrench & store. Big Snap-On box, Snap-On roll-around Cart with 4 Drawers, Fridge Full of Beer  . I also have a 40' long Carport behind the House where I can store my Open Trailer & another car.

My shop has been a 13 year long project, and is still evolving...I'm not sure it'll ever be done. I have in my mind what I want it to end up being, but life just keeps getting in the way so to speak.

It started off at a 36x50 full concrete foundation, stick framed outbuilding built back in 2001.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/Outbuildingphotos0011-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Outbuildingphotos0011-1.jpg.html)

The first couple of years while I was absorbing the initial build costs, it was basically a boat and yard equipment storage facility.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/garagemahal5.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/garagemahal5.jpg.html)

I did use spray in foam insulation and hung a 4 ton heat pump from the trusses to heat and cool the space.

About 3 years ago now I guess I finally got to add a two post lift to the shop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/IMG00061-20101116-1921.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/IMG00061-20101116-1921.jpg.html)

Then I had to change things up and built an apartment in the back of the shop for my Dad to live in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01529.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01529.jpg.html)

I was able to put a loft up above the apartment to gain back some of the storage I lost by the addition. this picture was taken from up in the loft. What a mess...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01530.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01530.jpg.html)

I also had to move the lift back about 10 feet. did that project by myself without taking the lift apart. Yes, there were a couple of pucker moments...at one point my Dad went back into his apartment and said "I can't watch this".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/LSVLance/Luckydog%20Ranch/DSC01577.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/Luckydog%20Ranch/DSC01577.jpg.html)

I now have a lot of pictures of stuff I'm working on in the shop, but none show much of the actual shop itself. It's actually pretty clean right now and will take some updated pictures of it in it's current form soon.

What I'm struggling with now is finding and setting apart a "dirty work" space where I can put my welding, cutting and grinding tools and do my dirty work in to try to keep the rest of the shop halfway clean. The lift is a fantastic tool, I use it all the time. I don't think I'll ever be without one again. I need more cabinets to store away the parts and stuff I just can't part with and I need to pare down some of the yard equipment that I just don't use that much anymore to create more space. And lights...I need WAY more and better placed lights. Painting the walls white might help with light as well. Eventually I'll get it all set up like I want, but lately I've been doing more work in the shop...than on the shop...which is okay too.

I see that your lift is right over the seams in your concrete. I was under the impression that this wasn't a good thing? I had the same problem in my garage, so this weekend we cut out 2 4x4' sections of the 4" concrete and dug down 12-13" to pour some 5000psi concrete this week. Maybe your slab is thicker and you were able to use longer anchor bolts?

SSLance
01-06-2014, 09:48 AM
Yeah, I went back and forth on that over and over again reading all of the experts on the internet saying it shouldn't be done while I was researching the lift install too. The more I looked and read, the more I realized that those saying you shouldn't span an expansion joint with the base of a two post lift were the same types that probably wouldn't ever even attempt to install a lift on their own because they were too afraid of everything.

I talked with the guys at Greg Smith Equipment about it...and a few construction guys I know and decided I'd be fine.

I've got 4,000 psi concrete somewhere around 5" thick with embedded rebar tied off both directions every 24" with a gravel base under the pour. To me, cutting sections out and pouring deeper didn't make sense because you'd lose or disturb the rebar reinforcement which I felt was as important if not more than the thickness of the concrete or where the expansion joints were.

I also read about the same people suggesting using epoxy to secure the anchors in the concrete which also didn't make sense to me. I used 3/4" anchors that went into holes I drilled 5-6" deep, some went through the bottom of the slab, others did not. After driving the anchors down into the holes and shimming the column bases plumb, I hand torqued each of the anchors down a little bit at a time. You could feel if and when they were biting and clamping the base of the column down onto the slab. I had one pull up and not bite, the anchor itself failed. I ended up driving it down into the gravel base and put a new anchor in it's place that bit and snugged up great.

This is a long explanation but in the end, the slab is stout and established (over 10 years old) and the bases of the columns are clamped down tight to the rebar reinforced slab, expansion joints or not with 3/4" anchors. Basically the anchors make the bases of the columns and the slab become one. The majority of the weight load goes straight down from the posts onto the slab with a little bit of the anchors job to keep the columns from tilting forward or back. With my truck all the way up on the lift, if you grab the back bumper and lift up or down on it, you will see the lift arms and the carriages twist and tweak back and forth a bit as the truck moves, but the columns do not budge. The lift itself is going to self destruct long before the slab will break or the anchors pull out of the floor.

I agree with you Lance.... The lift makes a square box... on a side to side basis.

People need to learn HOW to use a lift - and I think the real danger is front to back from an improperly positioned car. I have a Rotary 2 post asymmetric where a good portion of the car is offset to the rear. I was told by the lift people that the DASH should be parallel to the posts... and the front arms should be about 90* or perhaps ahead a bit. It's worked fine for me.

Just poking you here a bit -- but maybe that pickup could be used for a couple of runs to the dump... Looks like you're storing a lot of "stuff". That's supposed to be used for car stuff -- at least on this forum... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I drilled a pilot hole and concrete thickness was barely 4" in the area that the posts needed to go and I wasn't sure what psi my concrete is. I am also using a base plate lift (probably a Direct Lift HR8000) due to 10.5' ceilings. I think that makes it a little more critical on the composition of your slab as well. we are using 1/2" rebar to tie the new footing into the slab. Sounds like you know a little bit more about the composition of your slab....which helps.

Yeah, I built it...so I saw what was under it before it was poured and I knew what was poured..

You drilled sideways into the existing slab that was left and tied the new rebar into the old slab...right?

You'll be fine and I understand being concerned about the unknown in your case.

My main concern was actually hitting rebar while drilling the holes...which did happen in two cases. Cost me a $60 rebar drilling concrete bit to get those two holes drilled finally. Neither one was a direct hit though, both were about a half hit on the rebar.

jlwdvm
01-06-2014, 10:22 AM
Yes, we used 2 12" long pieces of bar per side (8/footing). We didn't go all the way across so I didn't have to worry about hitting bar when drilling holes. We also undercut (keyed in) the footing hole to the existing slab per most lift manufacturers' instructions. Can't wait to get the lift in!

A little water or oil or antifreeze on mine and you have to watch your step --- I'm telling ya -- I prefer a floor with just a bit of bite. Concrete is H A R D and not something you want to land on suddenly.

I'm not talking brushed or that much -- but just a bit more than "polished" -- unless you're just trying to make a showroom out of it.

There are sealer additives that shouldn't create excessive future maintenance.
http://www.hcconcrete.com/products/shark-grip-prep-products/Shark_Grip_Slip_Resistant_Additive/
Appears to be glass bead media mix in a sealer.

That said - After 36 years in the flooring business the last thing I'd want is a finished floor in my garage/shop. When I built my place we treated the slab with a penetrating sealer and called it good. In key work areas I use pieces (remnants) of fiberglass stabilized loose-lay vinyl flooring for easy cleanup and comfort. 10 years later it has stains here and there but in my opinion it looks much better than any epoxy coating or hi-build clear sealer would after the same use and maintenance (lack of).

I use my garage as a work shop not a showroom and don't want to slow progress taking preventative measures to protect a floor finish.

SSLance

The guy that finished my flat work put a really smooth finish on it. My goal at the time was to put an epoxy coating on it so I did NOT seal the concrete after.

Fast forward a couple of months and the guys that did my spray in foam insulation job were less than careful with their drop cloth placement and in several places coated the floor with foam. If you have ever seen that stuff, once it sticks, it is stuck on...FOREVER... I was so sickened by the overspray, I gave up on the dream of an epoxy coating on the floor and have been living with just the concrete ever since.

It's okay... Not smooth enough to be slick, but smooth enough to sweep up pretty easily. It's got some oil stains in it in places, they seem to show up more when it's humid.

I've seen enough horror stories from guys with the nice epoxy floors that have it coming up if they drive on it with hot tires or leave their cars sitting on them for too long that I'm now glad I didn't go that route. I'm sure some of the commercial type epoxy floors are better...but they are :G-Dub: compared to the home remedy types.

First off --- Nice job Bryce!! That's a good feeling to have something like this accomplished and will make a much nicer feeling for you every time you're out there.

Lance --- Some of my shop has FLAT Black walls --- and the rest is an off white --- the difference between the two areas is night and day. The black just knocks the light into nothing but I like the background for the neon and 'stuff' (a nice word for crap) on the walls.

Paint 'em white and you'll be happy with the result.

The white is awesome. It is at least twice as bright in the garage now. My next project is to insulate the roof and add a plywood ceiling for storage. I will paint the ceiling white too. This should also increase the brightness.

Back in the dealership days it was my first at a new dealership and the first day everyone had come back to work after they had scrubbed down and painted the floors. I got done setting up my tools just in time to watch a tech come in to his stall a little too hot, tap on the brakes where the freshly painted floor was wet from his last job, and slide right into the hoist. Boom! I would imagine a polished floor would be like that every day.

I'm a +1 on the fact that a painted floor should be in more of a "showroom" garage and not a working garage. I don't care what they say about how durable that stuff is.. I've taken out chips of concrete where trannys roll off of jacks, things have fallen over... where life happens... and you will never be able to keep that floor "perfect."

I'm curious how much you think painting the walls gloss white helps with light? The lighting in my shop sucks and I've wondered if it would help if I painted the walls white.

The walls in my garage used to be brown. I painted them semi-gloss white only because I couldnt find high gloss and lots of people told me it would be to bright. It was a night and day change, and since I had to do some sheet rock work this winter I will find some high gloss when I repaint.

I also have the white epoxy floor stuff and its wonderfull, but as stated it wont stay perfect forever. I put two coats of the clear over it and it seems to help, just dont drag anything super heavy and sharp across it. Most of the time I can see when under my car without having to have a shop light when its up on jack stands as the light reflects off the floor. Only time the floor has reflected to much is in the early evening if I have the garage door open and the sun is setting,it will blast light right onto the floor and blind you if you are in the wrong spot.

I have a beige epoxy floor. The rustoleum two part epoxy paint from Home Depot. It has held up very well in the last 10 years i've been in my house. I didnt put sand in it or the flakes. I mop it once a year cause i spend a lot of time on it. Its icy when wet, but i wanted it glossy so i can clean it easy but mainly to find very small parts when dropped....like circlips on motorcycle carburators....

Nice stuff in here guys! I'm really liking that loft^^^ doubt I would ever leave.

Currently I'm working out of a 3 car and have absolutely run out of space.

Bought a new place with my girlfriend that has an attached 2 car, a 20x40 which I will use for my shop and also a 36x47 steel building for storage. Can't wait to set it up!

T.C.

Well, I finally brought some pictures in

This was originally a Carport, but after the 4 Hurricanes of 2004, the roof leaked and the roofer could not fix it. So I decided to go for it.

Here are the before pictures

Yeah, we got an exterminator on the way. If you notice the plywood on the wall behind the Stang, we moved it and found a giant nest. I've killed over 20 of those little monsters in the past 2 days. The house was empty for a year, so the spiders moved in. I'm terrified we're gonna find a nest in the house. We don't have anything like that in Hawaii so I'm pretty freaked out. This little guy is the last one I killed today.

Half of my pole barn is dedicated for a shop. Inside shop area is about 22X19.

I can get my 68 Torino in there, or the 63 Fairlane but not both. I also have a tractor in there I am restoring.

I have another tractor outside and the Fairlane under the overhang covered by a tarp. The wall by the Fairlane divides off the calves.

My water front property garage during the 2010 Flood in Nashville!

The first 2 pics are of my shop behind the house.

The last picture is of my Datsun 510 race car getting a bath in one of the upper garages in the house. This car was in one of lower garages in the house and I moved the car to an upper garage so I would not have to leave the car outside and get wet. The car would have been totally submerged if I did not move it to the upper garages!

OOOPS!

Forgot about it and it got wet anyway!!!

All I had was 3 1/2 feet of water in the shop, 8 feet of water in the basement garages and 18 inches of water in the upper garage. No water or damage IN the house.

Just an inconvenience when compared to other folks with 8 feet of water in their house!

All cleaned up and ready to go 2 days later.
