So i was bs'ing with a buddy the other day, and we were talking turbo's, has anyone pieced together a turbo set up for a sbc from ebay? Turbo's and accesories on there are cheap, and while it's sure to produce more headaches than just buying a kit, it has to be cheaper to make your own? any thoughts or ideas?

Its funny you should mention it i was just about to start a thread about the same ebay turbo kits... Having done some research i can relay some of the stuff ive read.. and that is that the chinese turbos arent built for long service free life... and the kits require some creative tinkering... but still.. i have a masterpower t70 on the shelf along side a turbosmart 50 mm wastegate and 50mm TIAL bov..

there is a single turbo SBC kit on ebay with plumbing for bothe the hot and cold side.. including a turbo, bov and wastegate.. and hoses etc... it sells for 899 usd and if you discard the turbo and wastegate its still a good price..

one thing i would never use is the wastegate.. a defective turbo will just make less, or no power.. where a defective wastegate and a working turbo will detonate your engine faster than you can lift the accelerator pedal...

the turbos in the kits wont last long... so what, replace with masterpower or better when that time comes... the bov is crap.. but you dont really need it anyway...

the intercooler is marginal, but with a blow thru setup at moderate boost you really dont need it either...

lastly be sure not to run turbo muflers (right jody?:unibrow: ) no muffler or a large straight thru...

im tempted to get the above kit and put it on my stock internals 305 and see when it blows up...

nice link, what all parts do I need for a turbo set up? turbo, wastegate, lines, intercooler, etc? what all do i need to do to the engine on the build? I assume this same setup would work for an ls motor?

there is a kit on ebay with only the hot side

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-02-Firebird-Chevy-LS1-Camaro-Z28-SS-Turbo-Kit-T61-T4-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2c4f9af0caQQitemZ19031 4115274QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccesso ries

I have a single turbo LS1 kit for sale with US made header, a masterpower t70 polished, a turbosmart progate, a 50 mm TIAL bov, large intercooler and such..

And at the top of my recomemd list would be a pair of schwartz logs

Nelson turbo kits are ubercool.. but cost accordingly

Turbos from masterpower are relatively inexpensive and work great.. turbonetics and garett ball bearing units are much more expensive and the extra price isnt always justified...

i personally dont like ball bearing turbos for street use, they arent rebuildable so if you break one.. its a new unit...

wastegate is critical.. like i said, a cheap wastegate will cost you an engine as it might not be able to controll boost and you could overboost your engine the first time you get into it...

a Turbosmart pro gate is expensive but if you are running a single then its recomended.. there are others, TIAL and various US and australian manufactures... (dont skimp in the wastegate dept..)

the intrecooler is not that important.. well it is, but a large chineese unit is almost as good as a medium hihj quality unit.... but as with everything.. you get what you pay for..

ps here is the kit i have fs.
