View Full Version : Custom console update... Mold is done! Comments welcome/needed!

Hey guys
This is my first attempt at actually making a mold, so bare with me :D

The next step is reinforce the underside to add strength and then with the many many hours of sanding....

Suggestions for better mold production or glass laying... or anything? LOL, this is my true first attempt at custom fiberglass work, so i can use all the help i can get!

I dont think i will, only because the covan dash kit has all the ones i need for the moment... until i can save up enough for a blower ;)

for now here's the plan with the console. as illustrated so magically with my photoshop skills... watch out Kris, i'm coming after your job!! LOL

Hehe, nope i used my own special/secret trick ;)

just kidding, i used cut up garbage bags to cover it ... its a great mold release tool, its cheaper than hell, and one bag covers the entire thing! :D

Max this is the first mold in true form your going to make a reverse one to produce the part correct?

Make sure this molds surface is finished. I mean primed painted however the finished part is going to end up. That way the reverse mold will be exactly how you want it, and smooth as glass.

A secret to filling the fiberglass is a milkshake - 1 part Rage "Ultralite" filler, and 1 part Fiberglass resin and your favorite cream hardener. Mix well it will look like a milk shake. Brush on thick to fill everything (don't worry about runs just get it on as thick as you can), and it sands so easy but is strong as hell! This will save you tons of time trying to smooth the part out.

Jeff... sorry i should have clarified... this is the product of the mold i made, i made a mold from foam and formed the 'glass over it.

Explain more about this slurry of milk?

Ah that helps. Looks great by the way.

The milkshake. Go buy some Evercoat - Rage "Ultralite" body filler and cream hardener. You can use the fiberglass resin you have. Mix in equal parts the Rage and resin. So 4oz of Rage and 4oz of resin. Then about a half dollar size amount of the cream hardener. Mix well. If you get "blue" cream hardener it will look like a grey milkshake. Apply over the surface with a paint brush. You should have about 15 minutes of working time. Allow to dry then sand with 80 grit. You'll be able to fill all holes, crevaces, and detail out the contours soooooo much easier. Once it starts to get really sticky stop! You can end up afixing the paint brush to the part... :lol:

The big benefit is it get's super hard versus just using bondo or body filler, and it sands like a dream. You can make it 1" thick if you want and it won't crack. Then you can apply filler, primer, etc over the top with no worries. If you don't fill in everything just reapply and keep sanding.

wow, i've never heard of that before, i had planned on just using short hair fiberglass filler. That stuff sands pretty well too.

awesome job man.......I hope to tackle something like that very soon myself, and seeing what you have done, give's me hope that mine may turn out too.....again, great job man.

I'll have to give it a shot :D

You can use that first if you like. I recommend Evercoat's "Fibertech" product very spreadable and sands easier than Kitty or Tiger hair.

where might i find that? mind you, i live in minnesota, we dont have the kinds of paint/auto parts stores here.
