Ok, I think I have my Trans Am project in the works so I was just looking around at some other cars. I have always liked the way the '70-'72 Chevelle looks. I have come across a few nice ones for sale. What is the largest tire you can put on one without mini-tubbing? Anything I should be aware of on these cars?

I'm not 100% sure but I believe 295-315 depending on rolling the rear lip.

305 for sure but there is some talk here or on Pro-Touring of a 315 but a 315 would be pushing it.Brandon

Thanks, I just like the way they look but most of my other cars are sports cars that handle, I need to go drive one to make sure I like it.. I found this one on E-bay and my wife fell in love with it. I would have to convert it to a 5 spd and maybe change the wheels. What do you guys think it's worth?

The Chevelle with the right suspension will ride nicer than any of your Camaro's.............. that's what I loved about mine. The full frame gives a great ride compared to the subframe cars, they look great, and even though a bit heavier they can still handle fantastic. Not sure about the super low profile tires he has, may affect ride some, but that's a nice looking car.

I have a 68 Coupe, I drove it for six seven years before putting it away doing C4 vette suspension front and rear, Porsche Cayenne brakes a SBC with a Viper T56.

I'm in the process of having some 18" BMW M3 wheels widened from 8" to 11" so I measured my wheelwells the other day and they are 13 1/2" from the lip to the wheelhouse, then you can gain another 1/2" by rolling the lip (its 1" wide approx).

have a nice day!

saw the link now, car is gorgeous! as you state it needs a manual trans and I'd suggest a suspension upgrade up front to have better geometry.

275 frt and 315 rear seems to seem about the limit without a mini tub.

The Widowmaker and MarkM have build topics on Chevelles.com in the pro-touring section if you want to go bigger.

http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67647 has some pics of Chevelles using stock wheel wells.

Nice Chevelle!

That car has been for sale on craigslist (SF Bay Area) for quite a while.
Im in the area by the way.

If you contact the seller through craigslist you might get a better deal.

Good Luck.

SW,

I run a 10" wide wheel with a 305/35 no problem (5.75" b/s),I know guys who run an 11" wheel with 315's,it'll work but you really have to nail your b/s perfectly.

I've seen that Chevelle a few times out here in Frisco. I love it. But then again I would give all of my cars, Harley and both testicles to have a 70SS.

Why did I have the feeling that when I opened the link the car would be black? Sweet ride. I owned a few 70 SS in the past including a LS6, probably my fav car all of time. Typical problem areas are bottom of fenders, doors and trunk. Usually the back window leaks and causes issues but with the caliber of cars you usually look at you should have no problems with that stuff. Good Luck.

I see the bidding has ended...is there something you need to tell us? :unibrow:

I've got a buddy with a 70 SS 396 project he's giving up on that is tempting me...I know what you're going through....I've always wanted a nice 'velle too. Good luck with your search!

We run a 275 up front and a 315 out back with no rubbing issues at all. The car rides on a full airride tech suspension and I love it. Not to harsh but still handles really well. There also great b/c they've got some decent interior room as well as an under hood area that will accommodate anything.

I am sure I have asked you this before but what do you do for a living? I am going to be a senior in high school this year and it's time to pick a path. Also I wanna come visit your house one day lol, I will be in Austin pretty soon.

And you will love a Chevelle, I just sold mine and miss it. Found a true SS 454 project that's pretty nice nearby so I might pick that up and maybe a 77/78 Trans Am and 70-73 bird also for summer projects.
