View Full Version : Top Gear USA
Take a look at this. I guess BBC/Top gear will be using new host.

Should be interesting. I watch Top Gear all the time, and its mostly the hosts that make that show. The back and forth between them is hilarious.
Hope its half as good as the UK one.

It's gonna blow just like every other british hit that they try and americanize....

This will not be good. That Rutledge guy is a clown. Tanner's alright, not much of a TV personality though. Don't know the other guy at all.

I don't know. The Office has done pretty darn well for itself. And so did Friends. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out. I see Tanner Foust on Speed Channel's supercars show and I don't really like him as a host. Kinda bland, if you ask me.

Gotta agree with John...this show will blow.

This same idea was tossed around a couple years ago, faded away, and I was hoping the idea would stay dead.
It will be a politically correct suck-fest, for sure. Forget about them ever dishing out serious criticism of any car currently being manufactured. Too much liability.
What's gonna suck even worse, is that once this half-baked show airs, they won't make the original BBC Top Gear available within the USA anymore.

Yep, this show will suck. For the UK version, the hosts truly do make that show what it is, and there is no good US substitute for their wit and criticism.

Like I said before, Adam Carolla was at the top of the list for this show. He is a car guy and he's funny too.

Thinking about all the people they could have had to give this show a snowball's chance...Tommy Kendall did a pretty decent job as a TV host with that Test Drive show on Speed. The show was heavily scripted and influenced by the auto mfgr's, but he had better TV presence than Foust.

Who's "they?" It'll be on two different networks.

From the article:
The first series of ten episodes will air on History next fall (an American-only season not dissimilar to ‘autumn’, we believe), though exact dates are yet to be finalised.
I'm willing to bet that America will get the UK version on BBC America. Even if the BBC decides to stop airing the UK version on BBC America, ,I have a link to ALL the episodes of the UK version. I would be more than happy to hook you up with the trusted link.

That would be the production company, BBC Worldwide.
Highly doubtful that they would allow both shows to run in the same market, but, we can hope.

I'm amazed at how many people are passionately disapproving of the idea of this show. My only complaint is that finding hosts could've been approached from a different angle. It seems like they always try to find someone that has a racing or technical pedigree above a personality. There are so many high profile celebrities that are personalities for a living and car guys in thier private lives. Jay Leno, David Spade, Adam Carolla, Tim Allen, Chris Titus... the list goes on. To have the spirit of Top Gear you need a comedian. There are also some magazine guys like Frieberger that could add some spark. Just my 2 cents.

Not necessarily for Top Gear - but I like Tanner Foust because he seems legit and doesn't unnecessarily yuck it up constantly. My .02.

Tanner might be a nice guy -- but the "show" as we know it and all like -- it's as much about the hosts as it is the cars...
I for one - would NOT tune into the show with different hosts - it would be like many other things - I would always be comparing it to the REAL show...

If Adam Corolla is the host I will absolutely NOT watch it. He is a tool and should not be considered a car guy. Sorry that guy makes me twitch!

Chad -- Now that's funny!! :D
I was going to say something similar but bit my tongue (rare - I know)... He did an interview with Tom Nelson on a car... and that guy thought he was so funny -- and I thought "what a bozo".

I think I'll give it a chance for a few episodes, but they really would stand a better chance if they could have Titus host it.

Adam Carolla would have been a great host - I heard he had to drop out because he was trying to get a sitcom on NBC - He is definitely a "car guy" have you ever heard his Carcast Podcast - they are awesome - He owns about 7 vintage Ferrari's & Lambo's & a few vintage race cars (Paul Newmans) I would consider that enough of a car guy to host that show

It has Tanner Faust... Count me out.
At least with Adam Carolla it would have been mildly entertaining.
This will fail horribly and just like Night Rider, the networks will make the blanket statement that America hates car shows and we won't get a decent car show for another 20 years. It's not that America hates car shows, it's that we hate BAD car shows

So well said!! X's 300
We have absolutely the very lamest "car shows" in the entire galaxy.
