It looks like you leveled out the rain gutter. That has always been an idea of mine on those cars. I'm sure it will be bad ass like your vette when it is done.

I hope you are going to be able to get it low enough to the ground to make the low roof line look proportioned.. Muscle cars always look weird chopped to me because the body is proportioned to the roof pretty well from the factory.. im looking forward to seeing how this comes out!

The roof line on these cars stock is all wrong, the front is higher than the back. What you are doing makes a huge difference in look of the car.
I like the proportions of the Venom glass bodies, they made me realize how bad the stock roof was. Check out Jesse Greenings site, he's doing one also.

Subscribing to this one! I like what you are doing. I'm going a similar direction with my 69 Dart, except I'm building the front and rear clips using Viper suspension pieces. Hard to tell in the pics, but how are you attaching the frame to the body? Did you remove the inner rockers? I am thinking about cutting out the inner rockers and moving the frame perimiter into the rockers and welding there. Nice work you are doing, I am looking forward to seeing more. Just curious, why 2"x3" tube instead of 2"x4"? Are you running a cage?
69c4x11
08-10-2010, 07:19 PM
Since it is a perimeter frame, and the rocker panels would accept 3" and not 4" , is my reasoning,,I also wanted the floor space and leg& knee space,, the bottom of the 3x2 will be the floor pan,, the exhaust will be in the tunnel along with driveshaft,,, 2x4" will be used from the rear tie-in, to the rear of car,
wellis77
08-11-2010, 05:59 AM
Thanks for the explanation, makes sense. How far into the rockers did you go with the perimeter?
69c4x11
08-14-2010, 07:10 AM
The rockers on the nova have a double vertical panel in it,, I cut through the first which is close to3/4" from the other panel,, This left the original piece to help support car on the jig !! It would have crushed the rockers,, I built a 69 camaro 5" ride height 5yrs ago and used 3x3 in the rockers & 2x4 for the frame rails,, but floor pan was flat, and not much knee room !!!! It was perimeter but the main 2x4 was straight ,on 28" centers,,, the 2x3 added structural rigidity ,,http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/th_000_0014.jpg (http://s231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/?action=view¤t=000_0014.jpg)http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/th_000_0016.jpg (http://s231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/?action=view¤t=000_0016.jpg)http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/th_000_0017.jpg (http://s231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/?action=view¤t=000_0017.jpg)http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/th_000_0018.jpg (http://s231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/?action=view¤t=000_0018.jpg)http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/th_000_0019.jpg (http://s231.photobucket.com/albums/ee291/69c4x11/?action=view¤t=000_0019.jpg)

It's definitely not the Novanutcase but you are making good progress and you should be proud of where you're at with it. Are you planning on fishplating your joints on the back-half? Out of curiousity also, did you do anything when welding your chassis together to avoid warpage. I'm planning how I'll be attacking that part of my chassis build now and I've read that some don't worry too much about it, others go over-the-top crazy to avoid it. Looking good! Will

What are you doing for the wheel tub to quarter panel seam? Looks like weather stripping on there now.
Looks good so far, though it's hard to tell for certain the direction of the dash. Got any sketches to give us a better idea?

I'm using 63-82 Corvette hood ledge seal on the tub to qtr,, If Neal Lea says it'll work ,it's gospel !! The only sketches I have are on a carton of Bud + Busch light ! More sketches on qtr's with Sharpie,, Will update progress !!

Not trying to rain on anyones parade etc -- but how do you plan to get behind the dash for wiring - and installs etc? Is it removable? Ditto the console...

The original dash was welded in,, ??? Was it fun to wire or pull heater ?? No, There will be a glove box door, to match the cluster bezel, with access,, Any way it still will have more room to get to than a Vette !!!!

Wow!!! That is funny how I missed this. I spend a lot of time on this site looking at builds and to see someone talk about mine is really funny. I'm glad what we have printed so far has given others ideas. Super Chevy will be running the rest of my build Project Getaway in roughly 8-10 more issues in the coming months. We have been stacking the stories so it will be in every issue until complete.
I also started a post on here about it. I will be showing a lot of little things that the we couldn't show in the Magazine issues due to space. Check it out.

I am building a 66 also had the same problems hood didn't fit the fenders and the quarter panels were a 1/4 inch short on the door gaps I blamed it on after market parts glad to see I was not alone. It looks like you cut the quarter and filled it in? If I ever get computer smart I will post pictures us Nova guys have to stick together.

As Greg Weld said cut to cure !!! that has been done, the aftermarket parts for a nova are no better than for a camaro-etc,. !! Nothing a little welding and cutting won't cure,, but it just adds moe work to get the gaps right,,

I used it with good results, easy to sand and builds nicely. I think I had to use a 2.2 tip to get it to spray. Economical alternative to high build primer. Keep in mind I am a novice so my feedback value is limited.

I know that this note is too late for the hood on this car but I had the same issue with my hood not matching the curvature of the fenders on my 68 Camaro, too. I tried the bend and twist method first and all it got me was a dented hood.
The advise I got from a restoration guru was to drill out the spot welds along the offending areas then push the sheet metal or hood frame up or down until the curvature matches. The method worked really well for me and was much easier then trying to bend and twist the whole hood. Maybe this will help someone else before he grabs the 4-lb hammer.:willy:

The edge off the hood on the Camaro comes down at a 90 and is spot welded to the inner structure where the Nova hood is rolled back under as a door skin is to the inner frame, it would have to be completely removed from the inner support !Hope you understand my lingo ??

The edge off the hood on the Camaro comes down at a 90 and is spot welded to the inner structure where the Nova hood is rolled back under as a door skin is to the inner frame, it would have to be completely removed from the inner support !Hope you understand my lingo ??
Yep. Funny thing is... I have a 65 nova in the garage at my mother's house. It's been so long since I've opened the hood, I couldn't tell you what it looks like. After I finish my '68, the '65 is next. :unibrow:

Finally it's off the rack, Undercoated then Clearcoated,,Should make it easier to clean,, Had to strip the old Epoxy ?? Found the same problems on the top and deck lid that was on the doors,, spider web streaks of rust!!! Sanded it back to bare metal now the DTM Epoxy,, Now I know what's there !! More than you would think !! Door latch is on outside of glass, this will have to be changed,, to move to inside of door because glass will run length of door, fuzzies will not work and no way of mounting then unless you make inner top of door removable so you can screw them in,,I'm using fuzzie's thar are wider because ,with the stainless trim gone the gap is wider, The door latch was the fun part, had a shaft with bushing made to go behind the glass channel. there is enough clearance to work with stock latch, you are going to need a long channel for the front of door ,so glass will be stable, you could use your old vent window channel,, If I can help ?? send phone # , Roger J

Hey. Just joined up with Latral-G... found your post on google while looking around for idea's for chopping a Nova... Anyhow, names Brian, my Dad and I have plans to do the same to our '67. It's currently at the stripping shop... We've had to remove the roof skin and whatnot due to rust and started thinking about putting more slant on the windshield. That's when we came up with the idea of just chopping it since the new skin was not installed yet...
Anyhow, did have a question about front ends... Looking for best front clip that will provide a good ride without sacrificing looks... Don't want something so stiff that you feel every little bump - no what I mean?
Was thinking about a Detroit speed but they're too damned expensive so what's a good alternative?
Thanks

Thanks for the info!
So your're saying you cut 3/16" on the sail(B pillar) and 7/8"(A pillar)? If so, man, that isn't much... from what I can see, it looks as if you cut and narrowed the sail's from top to bottom and just leaned the A pillars(window frames) back a bit giving the windshield a bit more slant (Bad ass!) saving time and forgoing the roof stretch.
Just seeing if my thoughts are correct on proceeding with a plan of action...
I have a ton of questions about this project and greatly appreciate and idea's and or comments.
I will be posting pictures of our progress shortly.
Thanks agian!

Brian,,, You will to get your glass cut,, I'm going with power windows , the door latch will have to be modified,,because the rod and mechanism will have to be moved to the inside of the door glass,,, I also moved the windshield header at the roof up, so the stock glass won't need to be cut,, since your roof panel is off ,, think this out for a flush mount glass,,My new glass is at the shop now,, I have a pro-glass rear,, RogerJ

Door Glass: So are you saying that we'll need to have the door glass made..?
Windshield: We had planned on cutting and shortening the sails just enough to lay the windshield pillars back a bit.
Flush mounted glass would be very cool, but it seems like more work than I'm feeling like I want to do (lol), unless I'm over-thinking it which is quite possible??? A crash course explanation would be greatly appreciated. :)
Btw, I've worked in the auto body industry for 30 years and have plenty of knowledge to share if needed, but will never claim to be an expert on any matter of the subject... ;)
Thanks
