Charley,
Who bought the car off of Jody?

I would be REAL nervous about taking that car to auction. I hope that car goes to someone who knows how to handle HUGE power.

camcojb

looks good other than the power is off; it made that much at only 4800 rpms, kept shutting off the dyno.

you know, it can run as low as 6 psi I think (can't remember what springs are in the wastegates). At the lowest boost it's very easy and predictable to drive. In fact it's pretty docile at 9-10 psi also in my opinion. At 15 psi it's an animal and beyond that you're on your own. But the good thing is you don't have to run a bunch of boost and it's still fun to drive. That's the great things about turbos, you can adjust the boost level in the car while driving down the road...................Definitely the nicest riding car I've ever owned as far as a muscle car goes. :)

At Mecum, it's basically first come first serve. So those who consigned early got the good spots. That's why you can see a $300k car followed by a $30k car.

I'm pretty dissapointed and know that I will never run another car unless it runs between 3-7 pm, my 1k that I spent for the spot 200 for hotel room and 300 for gas just seems like a big waste of time and money right now, I could have drove 30 minutes to W.I. Dells car show this weekend and had a hell of a lot better chance of selling it. I knew after my father in laws car ran very late on friday night that mine would probably not sell and when I pulled it on the block and seen about 200 people in the building and around 7 there were a couple thousand I really knew I was probably taking it home. So on the 6 hr drive home today I realized that I really dont need the money so if I cant get really close to 75k I'll leave it in the corner till the market turns around or sell my other projects and make some changes so I can make it more trackable. After seeing 10,000 camaro's this weekend I'm getting kind of sick of them this things paid for and different so why not keep it? I just need to figure out how to pay for my upgades to my ta for my trip to Sema!

We actually don't know what kind of jet he had or ow high he would have bid but knowing he had a jet waiting was a good sign. The other guy stopped bidding when he was told by someone that he wasn't going to outbid the other guy. The winning bidder seems like a nice guy. The Ram Air 4 70 Trans Am was dirt cheap even if it did start out as a basket case. Those have been selling at 200k-250K. I just had a bad feeling about the car when reserve was lifted at 50K. You don't pull the reserve on a 200K car at 50K. Now I find out that the reserve got pulled because the bank owned the car and was cleaning house. Great auction. That was the best collection of musclecars at auction ever. There were good deals and bad deals but for the most part it looked to me that people paid pretty fair prices for cars. Next year should be even stronger.

clill (Charley) Congrats on the sale.. I was there with my boss and our shop crew ,Vail's Classic Cars, we were to the right of you in the corner with the 3 Mustangs and the 70 Dodge Charger..... I went over there a few times just to stare at it... wow to see the "Malitude" in person!!!

tellyv....... Feel your Pain on the no sale... we got ripped on our time slot, suppose to be 10pm they got us in there at 11:12 PM..... heck nobody there.. maybe 40 people max.
The money ate us too. Took 5 cars, means 5 trucks and trailers, and the shop is only 30 minutes away.. still a big exspense.
Did sell 1 at 10:am, good crowd then.
Don't know what happened but the paper work for all 5 was sent and received at the same time, but 1 at 10:am and the other 4 at 10:pm?

tellyv Went and seen your Cuda in person.... man it is simply awesome!! great ride enjoy driving it!!

Cant remember his screen name but there was a chap there selling a red Pro=Touring Camaro rag top, with a mean 502 in it, it didnt sell either.
It was a sharp car, got to speak with him for awhile while he was in the setup lanes, good to chat with.

I was glad to see the Pro-Touring style cars represented there...

Sucks you didn't sell the car. From the pics, it looks like a killer car.
BUT, everything happens for a reason. SO,...I would do exactly what you said about storing it and making it a more track-able car. Especially if you don't need to sell it. Why take a bath on it, right?

You should have to pay for your spot according to the time you run it's not fair that I had to pay 1k and so did someone with a good time slot, I should have done some more homework I would've paid 500 for a decent spot on friday than 1k for a ****ty spot on saturday. Congrats on the sale Charley. If somebody told me I wasn't going to outbid the guy it would make me want to run him up a little. That is if I could afford it if I got hung out there for some reason. I am told the buyer was from Lexington, KY. Doesn't seem far enough away to require travelling in a jet, but what do I know I am just a simpleton from Wisconsin.

How about charging based on the time slot they promised vs. what they actually delivered? That would be a nice goodwill gesture if they refunded part of the consignment fee if your car no saled when it ran an hour or more later than their projected time.

Realistically, Mecum would probably sell better percentages if they split the sale up into two lanes, maybe by reserve price.

Just make sure you get a good time, stuff sold well from early afternoon till about 7p.m.! I would go back if that was the case and mine actually ran within an hour of what they promisined. With all the attention my car had I thought it would do 85-90k.

GregWeld
05-26-2010, 07:36 AM
The problem with auctions is that you need at LEAST TWO bidders and 3 or 4 is even better... an auction with ONE bidder isn't an auction.

Doesn't matter if it's eBay or BJ.

The pros in the biz arrange some "phantom" bids with their buddies... to help things along. Good auctioneers - at a busy venue - can also 'help' the bid along but they're not risking that at a slow venue or for a single/newbie seller...

But I don't think the auction house can Phantom bid after the reserve is met? Correct?

GregWeld
05-26-2010, 07:59 AM
There would be no reason to do that... IF the reserve is met -- or is even close enough to get the seller to release the reserve.

Some people think that having phantom bids is akin to cheating. I don't think that way. Here's why.

If you only have one bidder - he's not going to buy the car because regardless of what he is WILLING to pay - he can't get there without someone to bid against (you can't raise your own bid).. thereby not hitting the reserve. So a friend in the pit - bumping along (to a point) is good - and the buyer CHOOSES to bid higher or not. Some say - "well he might have bought the car cheaper" - NO that isn't true - because if it doesn't break reserve - it isn't selling. I would NEVER advocate "running up" the bid... that's wrong. Once it's near the reserve or at it - no more bumping.

Vegas69
05-26-2010, 08:17 AM
Except, if I was the only bidder and it didn't hit reserve I'd wheel and deal down the road with the seller. I'm sure there is a clause in the Mecum contract but the Wife could buy it. :unibrow:

GregWeld
05-26-2010, 08:23 AM
No need for that -- most auctions now days facilitate sales post gavel. Mecum even has a desk staffed with folks to do exactly that.

Vegas69
05-26-2010, 08:24 AM
Then why would you want a shill bidder? I understand the sellers side....

ironworks
05-26-2010, 08:33 AM
Probably to have the appearance that they actually sell cars. That would be one boring TV show if all the cars sold after the fact. And at that point you might as well just open a Consignment store.

I'm thinking about selling the pickup at the Monterey event this August.

GregWeld
05-26-2010, 08:40 AM
Because you never know who's going to bid - and what they're waiting for - and or - what they're willing to bid to... and bidding creates activity... a single bidder or one or two bids LOW early... doesn't get the auction going. People love "action" on a car (or whatever) because it validates what they're doing.

Frankly - my feelings have always been - if the item doesn't bid well - there's LOTS of reasons for that... but mostly - it's just a lack of interest in the item for sale. Regardless of the time -- if I want to bid on something - I'm going to be there when it's rolling - or I'll arrange for someone to be there and proxy bid for me or whatever. So to me -- if the item isn't that hot - then nobody bothers. But that's a different argument.

The good sellers spend lots of time PRE AUCTION pimping their stuff -- talking to prospects - really "selling" - and if the time is an issue - making people really aware of when it's going across etc. I'm NOT SAYING TellyV didn't do this - I'm saying that you've got to do more than just arrange for the item to be auctioned... it takes a bunch of effort and time... and even then there is no guarantee.

The big regular sellers are going to get all the prime time slots... unless you've got something that is really hot or rare or whatever... That's why eBay is so good for "us" regular guys... you can put on a reserve - you can run it a zillion times - you can negotiate via emails etc. and it costs FAR less even if you have to run it 10 times. Even there - it takes some effort. Great photos and lots of them - lots of description - a good attitude - honesty in the description and a sincere effort to present the item so people can form a good opinion on the value. In the end - the price is set by the item and not the seller... it's only worth what others are willing to pay.

This is exactly why I always welcome a low ball offer on a property I'm listing. If there is any other offers subsequent it normally nets the seller a Highest and Best offer that is way higher than needed. Would I lie and say I have another frivolous offer? No, if I got caught.... I understand the sellers side of the equation. If I was bidding and smelled a snake I'd be pissed. False demand and TV ratings at my expense. I guess it's a practice that is accepted by most or they wouldn't show up and bid. At the end of the day, if you're happy with the price you paid then then that's all that really matters. If you have my prick is bigger than yours syndrom, then it just cost you some change.

Good auctioneers - at a busy venue - can also 'help' the bid along but they're not risking that at a slow venue or for a single/newbie seller...

It amazed me when I was at Barrett Jackson how often they ran off the money and had to back it up and hook somebody back in.

Thanks for the offer, It looks like a beautiful area from what I have seen. I'm waiting to hear from Mecum as to whether I might do run it across the block.

Did anyone see this video. Been to a lot of auctions and this happens at all of them. Just funny someone caught it on camera.

If you've been to many auctions - it happens all the time. That or the "bid in the back" - or the "phone bidder" - or the "internet bidder".... or maybe just the sellers buddy.

You set what you are willing to pay - don't forget to add buyer fees and transportation... and stick to it. Cars are like buses - there's another one coming by every 15 minutes.
