Well since my dad and I have geared up and started working on his Camaro project again (he dubbed "Trailer Trash Treasure") I figured I would go ahead and post up a build thread on it.
The car is a 1980 Camaro Z-28 that I bought for him about 8 months ago (he used to own one in the 80's). I painted it the color of his old car and now we are working on building the engine for it. It will have a 5.3l LM7 out of an 04 Tahoe. Plans for the engine include and LS6 cam, LS6 intake, a set of 317 heads milled .030 off an LQ4 (w/LS6 springs), and flat top 4.8l pistons all over a stock bottom end. We are hoping to just about double the factory 190hp with this combo. It will have a 4L60E out of a 2001 Camaro behind it with a little stall in the converter. The idea is to have a factory appearing 80 Z-28 with modern drivability and power. Let us know what you guys think of the car and the progress so far. All criticism is more than welcome!

The day I got it;

So far so good. I like your plan for it. (and the color too).
I am curious though, can you use the heads off a 6.0 on a 5.3 saflely? I ask because I thought the valves would hit the cylinder walls since the 5.3 has a smaller bore. Or am I confused? (and that is OFTEN:D )

yes, you can use up to a 2.00" valve safely on a smaller 4.8 or 5.3. Its only when you upgrade to the larger valves in like the L92 heads that there are clearance issues. You have to have at least a 4" bore to run those heads.

I ordered a set of Speed Pro 4.8 flat tops from Summit. Long story short they only sent me one of the 8 I ordered and upon calling them I find out that they only have 6 more in stock and dont plan on ordering anymore since they arent a commonly ordered item. I would have to wait (alot longer than I want) to get the last piston so I have to find another source (easier said than done since most only offer sets lol) that will sell me the final piston I need.

I agree, I think these cars are going to make a comeback soon, considering that most first gens and early second gens are getting harder to find and more expensive to purchase. I hope to see the retro late 70s/early 80s themes become more popular, especially in the PT world. As for the wheels, the ones that are on it are factory so we will probably keep them, at least for a while.

Dont forget to measure your drivetrain angle. I think the tranny needs to be at -1 to -3. Do you need a poly tranny mount? My dad has an extra. Remember all the issues I had using rubbers. My stock LS1 ripped them in half. You should really change them.

yeah ive been thinking about that, as of now the angle is way too steep. Im not quite sure how to remedy it since i dont have a ton of room in the tranny tunnel to bring it up, and the only other option is to bring the engine down which would constitute cutting and altering the frame mounts to be lower.

I have shot most of my projects in a shop my friend owned. It was really a large garage that wasn't exactly the best environment for painting. I really didn't do much to get it ready for paint except clean the floor very well and of course wet it down to keep any dust from ending up in the air and on the paint. I would also lay plastic over anything you didn't want to get overspray on and I would set up a couple box fans near the door to keep the air flow going. I know there are usually body shops that will rent out their booths on the weekends or when they aren't in use for a reasonable price. I would recommend doing that so you have a good clean area to lay down your first paint job. Also you will have much less debris in your paint meaning the cut and buffing process will go much smoother for you.

Looks good, but I would be worried about glare with the upper w/s area glossy and buffed It's flat black to cut down on glare. FWIW, I have an aftermarket plastic dash cover on my Firebird (Dashcap) until I can afford to have the dash pad redone...and since it's just grained plastic, it's still shiny enough that the glare is really bad on the windshield in the sun. The sun hits it, and it is reflected up onto the windshield, right into your line of vision. For showcar, maybe not a biggie, but if you plan on driving it, you'll probably regret it. Food for thought and just a helpful observations...probably not what you want to hear after putting in the effort.

Thank you for the input, we appreciate all constructive criticism. Although I dont necessarily agree. I painted a friends dash in his first gen Firebird and buffed it out to the same level of shine and he never had any issues with glare. He drives it alot too. Either way if it does become a problem we can always get a dash pad cover to help.

.... I painted a friends dash in his first gen Firebird and buffed it out to the same level of shine and he never had any issues with glare. ....I feel the trend of shiny interior parts for the past few years is subject to ones personal preference. I have to disagree that your friend "never had any issues with glare". Maybe he likes it so much that it doesn't concern him, but I have been in a few cars with the dash painted glossy, and its definitely creates a visibility issue.

Regardless of the shiny dash treatment, the progress is good and your project is B/A.

You cant paint springs as it changes their rates. Its been said painted coils raises the rate by up to .0000001 pds. That something u will feel going through the trailer park. Its up to you if u want a rough ride.

Also make sure your marked them left and right, if you switch them the car will turn easier to one side. Happen to me, twice:_paranoid

That looks awesome Brian. Good job. What did you use to sand down the intake? Just wondering if you used good old muscle with sand paper or an angle grinder first? I'm debating about doing mine body color, but haven't decided. It's covered in the little dimples.

Im sure Brian used muscle. He is a machine when it comes to sanding. I could wet sand half a door and brian would be done with the entire front end. Looks like someone made a lot of progress.....I have a brand new MAF if interested.. Its a 5 wire. Looks great! Wish I could help.

Thanks guys, and Mitch I wish you could help too! lol As for the intake I sanded it down by hand with 180 grit then filled the casting holes in the top with red filler putty to even it out. Then a couple coats of 2K high build primer, later ill wet sand the primer with 600 grit then some color and clear.

Also ill need that MAF Mitch, let me know how much

Great progress!

That highway 15 kit is great. Its amazing how many wires you really only need. I suggest getting a couple of fuse blocks. 1 for ignition and 1 for constant though. The ECM has like 3 ignition wires and 2 or 3 constant. Mount those close the the ecu. I did the remote solenode as well and my car cranks fine even at 0 degrees here. Never had any issues either in 115 heat.

you cant see in the pictures, but there are 3/8" holes drilled into the bottom of the sides of the sump to allow fuel in and out but keeps forward and rearward sloshing from letting the pump run dry.

You've got a grommet on those wires running through the metal, right? I'd redo that set up even if you do have a grommet on the wires. Way too risky being right there with the fuel vapors. They make bulkheads with threads on both side and with a rubber seal. That's the way you need to go about wiring the fuel pump. The ground can just connect to the fuel tank itself or run another bulkhead and run the wire to the frame near by.

I was wanting to run those bulkhead connectors for the pump wiring but I could not find anything. I even posted up a thread on here but nobody could help me find anything. If you happen to know where I could get them Id really appreciate the info. Thats really how I wanted to do this in the first place.

Now that you mention it, I remember that thread. I have no idea where to get something like that though. Maybe McMaster Carr? You might be able to make it using a small grommet that'll let a bolt bass through. You'd have to seal the bolt to the grommet though. Maybe use the sealant you'll use on the tank cover. Use washers on either side of the grommet and it should seal together when tightened down.

How's the fit/finish?

Thanks

The gauges are New Vintage Redline Series, the dash pad is from Classic Industries and I dont remember the manufacture of the instrument cluster. So far the fit and finish is what you would expect of aftermarket parts, so in plain terms.... not great lol
Ill get it close though.

Well Dad and I have made quite a bit of progress in the past few weeks. The entire interior is done except the headliner. The rear tail lights and wiring is done and all electrical circuits and wiring have been completed and tested. As of now all systems are go except the fuel system. Last few things before firing her up for the first time are the fuel system and finish the exhaust on the drivers side. I will post up more pics soon and a video as soon as we fire it for the first time.

Finally fired the car today. We were able to get it running wed. but since VATS was still enabled it would shut down after a few seconds. After fixing a couple little leaks and a slight misfire we will get a new exhaust under it and back to NicD and AZdynochip for final tuning and dyno time. I should have some video up pretty soon.

A few updates...
Just been working on a lot of the "new car" bugs lately. Had a transmission issue that kept us stuck in limp mode for a bit. Figured out the main trans connector was wired wrong. Ive since rewired that and all is good there. Been trying to chase a misfire in cylinder 7. Still not sure what is the cause of it (hopefully not more messed up wiring) Besides that and a few little leaks here and there we are ready to take the car down for the exhaust and front end alignment tomorrow. We are replacing the existing, non-mandrel bent exhaust (with cats) with a new aluminized 2 1/2" mandrel bend dual kit with Magnaflow 3-chamber mufflers. After all that is done just a few more loose ends to finish up like headliner, kick panel speakers and the final tuning and dyno run. Ill post up some pics of the exhaust install and hopfully a couple videos soon.

So we figured out we had a bad injector. I ordered a new one from Rock Auto and it was stuck open and gas washed the cylinder yesterday after I installed it. Today we went down to a local GM dealer and $150 later we had a new, working injector. Here is a video of us getting it fired back up and burning out all the residual fuel in the exhaust system....

Very good find! Most guys figure out they have an injector problem that's stuck open, when they turn the key, and a rod makes a new hole in the block, because the cylinder has fuel puddled in it.

Yeah everything is fine now. Fortunately we were able to figure this out soon enough and get it all fixed before any real damage was done. We drove it to its first car show last night about 25 miles away. It did great considering it still needs a final tune. Overall we are really happy with the way the car turned out. Best of all, my Dad gets to drive it now and enjoy it fully. Its been almost 4 years in the making and this is a great payoff. Special thanks to Mom, Dad, my brother Andy and also to my wife Amy for putting up with my absenteeism lately while I got the car finished. :thankyou:

We got the car tuned and strapped it to a dyno today. Since the drive shaft wasn't sufficient enough to make a pull in 3rd gear (tuner was afraid of it coming apart in 3rd) we did a pull in second instead. The car put down 311whp and 297wtq. Overall we are happy with the power numbers our little 5.3 put down. Not bad for a daily driver muscle car. Here are a couple videos...

Brian,

Car's got a nice sound to it.

I had just a stock 5.3 and still liked it.

What do you think of your 5.3 so far?

Also, how is it with the t-tops?

Thanks, we really like it, its a great all around engine for a daily driver car like this. We hit all our goals with it, great reliability, nice drivability, decent gas mileage and over 300hp. Perfect combo for this application. Its not at the monster power numbers like most are accustomed to seeing on this site, but for what we will use it for, we don't need 500+ hp
