View Full Version : 1965 Fastback Mustang Project
I just picked up this new project today. We will be doing all the rust repair, removing the drip rails, adding metal flares and a few more surprises.
Chris leaves for Iraq for a year and while he is there serving our country we will be restoring his fastback. I think the hardest thing for Chris will be leaving his son.

Great project. I always liked the first gen fastbacks the best.
I hope for a safe return for Chris. Leaving his son can not be easy. I want to say thank you to him for serving our country. It is deeply appreciated. Much more than I can put into words here.
It is now ready for the media blaster

It had been patched with fiberglass mat so there is a lot of hidden rust. The first thing we need to do is repair all the rust.

Lot of work on that one there. What's the plan....restomod or back to original?
Lot of work on that one there. What's the plan....restomod or back to original?
It will be a restomod without drip rails and add fender flares plus a few other things.
I had Brian weld the shock towers since we are going to be using Opentracker front suspension

The fender aprons had been replaced at one time but they had not cut out all of the old metal and were not welded in some places. Brian removed the fender apron cleaned it up and welded back in and repaired a little rust.

Looks good Rusty.Where's the car going when finished and what are the plans of the owner?
Looks good Rusty.Where's the car going when finished and what are the plans of the owner?
At this time we are doing the rust repair, remove drip rails and add fender flares and get it in prime. The owner is not sure where he will be stationed after Iraq so I'm not sure if we will be painting it.
Brian cut the floor out next step will be subframe connectors.

This afternoon Brian starting making the right subframe connector. Since the early Mustang has no torque box in the front we are making one out of 2 x 2 and also welding it to the rocker and the rear torque box. He still has to finish welding it to the rocker

The floor looks great. Theres allway surpises on these projects.Nice work.
Brian cut the drip rails off than drilled out the spot welds and removed the roof. Now he can repair the rust and epoxy prime the area that the factory left bare metal.

Any particular reason to adhere rather then weld? I'm guessing thatd be a lot of heat in a thin part? Looks good!

Brian was working on other things it was just easier for me to bond them. Since it was off the car I didn't want it to warp and than I sprayed two coats of epoxy.

I have flush mount glass kits coming out for these 64-68 Mustang's, and when working with the cars, I like the 65-66 much better than the 67-68. I am not sure why the later brings more money, it has some odd lines and proportions.
We have a new rear panel so Brian removed the old one. This will save a lot of time.

Now that the rear panels fit it is time to prep the frame rails. As Brian was cleaning the front trunk floor he found a few rust pin holes. He cut out the bad area and made three patches one at a time to keep it from warping the edge that hangs down.

Yep, very nice work....Altough i still dont get it lol!!! I went back to read (quickly) but did not find what is the plan with this car? Is it only built to show the capability of the shop posting up or ??
Except for pics i seldom see comments about it or even anwsers to questions....
I can see it is getting back to now! My hat off to the courage it takes to WANT to bring that back.
Any estimate of the manhours invested so far?

What size wheels and tires can you run with those tubs. Brian sure is doing great metal work.

Not sure what size the owner plans on using. On Modified Mustangs & Fords project car they said 295/35/18 fit. On another forum someone else moved their tubs in 2" and has 305/20 on his Mustang.
The outer wheelhouse did not match the inner. We had this same problem on the 65 coupe and the outer wheelhouse was from a different vendor. Brian cut it in two than test fit the front

Some of the sheetmetal fits but most of it you have to work on it to get a good fit. All I have used in my shop since 2005 is SPI primers and clear.
Love the SPI products to the clear is awsome!!

I want one of these. Must add to the bucket list
This project has been on hold for awhile but it is time to finish it so we got it out of storage and into the fab shop. The first thing Brian did was line up the deck lid.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1965%20Fastback%20Mustang/DSCN3522_zpsrdibee8k.jpg
He had to do a little cutting and welding on it and I did the bodywork and sprayed two coats of SPI epoxy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1965%20Fastback%20Mustang/DSCN3563_zpsb8id7xcz.jpg
Block sanded and sprayed SPI Turbo primer.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1965%20Fastback%20Mustang/DSCN3574_zpszzmnec8b.jpg
The customer wanted vents in the hood and I found these. This is not his car.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1965%20Fastback%20Mustang/DSCN3620_zpsbewwn8cn.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1965%20Fastback%20Mustang/DSCN3629_zpsfnlfek9i.jpg
He just had to trim a little of the flat part of the brace
