View Full Version : Carter Hickman rendering of my new 73 Camaro track and street car

I'll start a build thread once I get some of the cars projects cleared out of my shops, but for now I wanted to show you the rendering Carter did for me. The plan is a budget 73 Camaro ($25K to $30K complete) that will still look nice and give me a car to do track events with. I had it rendered in Silver, but may go with a flat color, not sure. I am hoping to make friends with Matt and Tyler at Anvil to run their carbon fiber body panels, and so the rendering shows the stripes in raw CF, which will be shot with flat clear.

Nice Jody, what are the plans for the suspension and drivetrain?
That rendering by Carter is amazing BTW

I bought the car from Chris Mock. It has already been minitubbed with a 4-link rear and DSE tubs, along with Chris' C6 front subframe and new C6 suspension. I have an LQ9 with CNC LS3 heads and custom cam that I had planned to put in the Vega; that will now go in this along with a T56 6 speed I bought from Steve Rupp.

thanks Chris. I've had 4 second gens previously, really like them. This will by far be the best one I've done, but it's not going to be real expensive. That makes the build fun as I can't afford another 6 figure car, so parts choice and decisions are more carefully thought out, vs my past thing of buying whatever I wanted..........................
Looks great Jody.
Does that budget include the cost of the car already with all those goodies or is that on top of the car cost ?
Also will it include the LQ9 and T56 already purchased ?
If so.. that'll be a killer low budget track car !

Sounds like a Killer project Jody. Those suspension parts sound interesting. Are there any available for a Gen I and any pics of the car/suspension?

at this point with the car and all suspension, complete engine with accessory drive, throttle body, intake, injectors, pan, etc., computer and trans plus shipping I have about $11500 total invested. So my budget goal is for everything including the car.

Thunderhill would probably be the closest with Infineon a close second.

Carter as usual
Jody , i would imagine its hard to "budget build" when youve been able to just order and build before.
Im sure your car will be highly detailed and sharp. Based on that past rides. How are you planning to keep you budget down from where your starting ? Painting it yourself ? using used parts/discounted deals from the sale section on the forum/ebay ?
Im interested to hear your plan.

SWEET!!!!!! Love that rendering by Carter, that guys got talent! :hail: Im gonna be following this build. Im thinking about re-doing my 72 Z28 and am looking at other cars for ideas, and design examples. Cam.......PICS, PICS PICS!!!! Need more pics and progress reports. If it comes out looking half as sharp as Carters rendering, its gonna be great!

thanks guys. There will be a full build thread on this one, with a running total of every dime spent. Should be some good info, and fun to boot. I have the money in the bank to finish it now, but I'm holding on to that cash as business has been quite iffy the last year or so. If a screaming "got to have it" deal comes along for a particular item I'll need comes up for sale on the boards I'll grab it, but not sure exactly when the "build" will start................

When you were asking about the vega, it sounded kinda like what I had years ago and I thought that it might be a cool and lightweight little G-machine. But this second gen Camaro will be ALOT better! The car looks great, greatlines and it will be a build that will be very interesting. Just dont turn it into a 100 thousand dollar showcar and you will be fine. I liken it to less is more. And you will capture everyones interest! Plus it will be a blast to drive! Im gonna follow this build like a hawk Jody. Lokss like its going to be a great build, and a great car!

thanks Tony. It won't be a 6 figure car, 'cause I can't afford one right now................ It'll be fun to put together a car most guys can afford to build, that will still be competitive at the track and the local cruise. I'll keep track of all expenses and show everything I do, so it can be duplicated by anyone.

I am really excited about this build. And that you are going to keep track of and post costs. I am shooting for the same kind of thing. Good looks, performance and a lot of fun. Like Tony said, going to follow like a hawk.
Do you have the car in your possession yet? Any pics of "off the truck" condition?

I think the Vega would be very cool. But the cost to build the Vega vs building this second Gen would be a toss up. And there's no comparison in value when the cars were done, the second gen would be worth at least twice what the Vega would be. Unfortunately, that was a factor in my decision.

"Budget" and "Camaro", two words I really like and identify with .
Jody, when you say the rear is a quadra link style, does that mean a 4 link with a panhard bar on it? Sounds like it was a custom rear suspension setup ---
Looking forward to the pics and the build. I wish you great success in your endevors in forming an alliance with Anvil and will hope to someday be able to do the same :unibrow: .

4 link with panhard. Swivel link ends similar to what DSE uses, but not the same. It was done by Scott Mock. I know the DSE stuff works, so this should also.

Great project! This is an inspiration for all of us who build cheap, er, budget rides out of necessity rather than by choice. Seriously though it's nice to see what one can accomplish on a budget. With the big bux the sky's the limit, on a budget you have to really stretch the brain and get real creative at times. Can't wait to see it get finished.
