my name is Joe. I'm building a 1972 Camaro with a drivetrain out of a 2004 GTO with a procharger setup. I'm a senior in high school and I work 40 hours a week at a local gas station to afford paying for this car. I'm kind of midway with the car so I'll try and put up as many old pics as I have so everyone knows what's going on. I've had the car since I was in the 8th grade and I paid for everything myself. The car is being built in pro-touring style and I plan on taking it on the track as much as I can. I found the car from my father's friend who has had it since it was new (have pictures of the car new) which he took apart from the start and was going to make it into a race car. He took it all apart, painted it and that's where she sat since 1978 to 2006. The car has 22,000 original miles and is an original SuperSport. The body didn't have one spec of rust and the car is all original panels
Lists of Mods:
LS1 Procharged and Intercooled
Edelbrock Long Tube Retro Headers - edit going to put a full stainless header and exhaust set up in now due to bad fitment
T-56 GMM Short Throw shifter
Hotchkis TVS System
Global West Upper and Lower Tubuler Control Arms
AGR 12:1 Ration Steering Box
DSE Subframe Connectors (not installed yet)
DSE Solid Body Mounts
Moser 9 Inch Ford Rearend
Vintage Air Unit
Power Windows
Factory Tilt Column
Fesler Billet Hood Hinges
that's all I can remember for now:willy:
In the next few months I'm hopeing to install the fuel system, brakes, and have all the wiring done. My goals are August for it to be running and September driving it to the body shop for paint. I will try and keep the thread as updated as possible. I am running into problems with my headers hitting my frame so this weeks plan is getting those in as making a crossmember at school. Then I will be moving on to the front of the motor.
Pictures ( I tried getting them as in past to present order the best that I could).

Awesome, real awesome. I love hearing about young guys getting into the hobby. And your working and paying for this yourself? Truly amazing. You must be a good kid to have the discipline to do both.
When I was 14 I was working full time after school, getting grades in school and spent all my money on cars (and girls), and became a car builder.
My son Michael has been in the shop his entire life, started to build his first car when he was 14, Graduated school with great grades, he is 23 now and has amased quite a litte collection of cars all with his own earned money. And has been a car builder for 8 years now. The "Prodigy" in Prodigy Customs.
Tell you what man. You did not ask for anything, but good things come to good people. I am sure your not knocking down big bank at the gas station. Doing 40 hours and going to school is impressive.
This hobby / business has given me a lot. Every once in a while I see a project I want to get behind a bit and give back.
If you need something for this car, I will hook you up with some incredible deals. Were talking our cost or better on whatever you need for this car that we can supply, which should save you some real $$$$ and hopefully help get the car done sooner and better.
I will also send you a couple of our own products that will just kinda "show up" as a surprise.
In return, I get one picture of your smiling face with your done car for our wall!

I plan on doing Willwood 6 Pistons with the biggest rotors in the front with 4 piston calipers out back with the biggest rotors. I haven't decided or been worrying about researching a power booster and master set up yet. I've been trying to get the fuel system/headers/and front of motor in order.
I understand. And that is good to focus on what is right in front of you. I also have a second gen (70 RS) and am really excited to see yours on here now. Thanks for sharing!

Wow--frame off on your first build? Impressive--especially at such a young age. I hope you and your dad are involved in the project---I think that would be a great experience for a father/son to share (or father/daughter)---and build a great relationship. That's a great offer from Frank---he's a good guy and generous to boot--in fact he's giving me a set of wheels in April when my name is drawn at the RTTH event---LOL (inside joke). Please keep the pics coming---they show a great amount of work thus far, and I am looking forward to seeing the rest come together! Great work!

This post is overdue. When I read about your support of the school class project and now this, I just gotta say something. The purpose of this site is community and you Frank are one of the leaders. If not for community, it'd just be another hobby with snobby shop owners turning their noses up at guys just getting started. Believe me, I've met them in the custom boating, motorcycle and now the pro-touring world. What's with these prima- donnas anyway?
Thanks for all the good things you do Frank. Love you or hate you, no one can say you're not a good man.
Ron
P.S. The build is killer!

Thank you so much guys. All the nice comments are great. This car is the definition of how hard work pays off to me. I would work 100 hours a week if it meant getting this car done sooner and building it the way I want it. It went from being a simple daily driver idea to a full blown pro-touring hi tech hot rod. I couldn't have asked for a better response and what Frank has said has only added on to the experience. I will keep this as updated as possible. I am at work now untill 7:00 so I will be talking to Frank soon after. It makes me feel proud that I'm getting a bunch of older guys then myself who have been building cars for years saying I have a nice project going. And to the comment of building it with my father has also been great. We have been so close and dealed with the stress of putting the LS1 in the car together and made it work as a team.

Deffinatly might have to take you up on this! The computer is tuned from the GTO, so hopefully I can keep the tuning that it has. As on an update of the car my father and I started making the crossmember, but up here in new york we got hit with a huge storm and just got power and internet back today as the rest of my surrounding blocks has none. So this weekend was a washout, for this week I'd still like to finish the crossmember and get the headers in place. I will be ordering the Procharger bracket and my power steering pump and bracket this week. My blower will also be sent to Procharger to get it's reclocking and to be gone through.

I have several russell/edelbrock fittings. I know I have the one for the fuel rail and the vette fuel filter. Pm me your info and they will be on their way.
I think I may have other parts but need to get back in the garage and work on my own project and see what else I have.
Keep up the good work. I am sure you are making your father proud and that is a gift/felling that he will always remember.

Great project, and Prodigy just outdoes themselves again...
I FULLY restored my Camaro with my Dad, and did the whole motor swap with him too - I would have never done it any other way. The amount and quality of time I got/get to spend with my dad working on the car is priceless.

Deffinatly! Thank you very much. Ordered the blower bracket and the power steering bracket today. As well as sent the blower back to Procharger for it's reclocking. I will be running Street and Performance alternator and A/C compressor brackets (moves compressor to top, alternator to bottom) because of my fear of notching the K member that we talked about.

Deffinatly might have to take you up on this! The computer is tuned from the GTO, so hopefully I can keep the tuning that it has.
Just went back and reread it - didn't realize the GTO had the procharger already. You should be alright except maybe needing VATS turned off...
You should check the air-to-fuel ratio once you get it running though - to be sure the differences in the fuel system don't mess it up.

yeah I plan on having the rear o2's and cat's canceled so I was assuming fuel trims would be out of whack.

No, you can delete the rear O2's and cats without effecting fuel trims - fuel trims are off of the front O2's only. Rears are only there so the computer can tell if the cats are functioning properly...

Got somethings done tonight. Measured the front of the motor and found that it's 5/8th offset to the passenger side, so I have the tranny at center now. I have to cut the floor a little bit more, so that will be my plan for tomorrow night to get the tranny and motor at both 5/8th offset. Then I can weld the cross member. On a good note the headers almost fit now that the tranny is at center, so I'm hoping when it's in correct position that I will not have to notch a thing:woot: Here are some pics of the measuring

Mark has been the only one I could find that makes a low mount passenger side alternator bracket for the LS style motors. Ordered everything today but I thank you for the recommendation! Got a nice package from Procharger today:D The blower bracket and P/S bracket came, started mocking it all up. They sent me no directions, so we're trying to figure it out the best we can from pictures. The crossmember is also in the car and looks pretty sweet aswell. Sunday my plan will be to get the headers to fit in.

yeah after looking at the simplicity of the brackets, I think my next project I might try making them myself ( I know it's not as easy as it looks, but it's worth a shot)

I decided to run my alternator off of the 3rib a/c pulley and I also have 1" set back plates. If I would have used the regular set back and main serpentine it would have been a cake walk!!
With all that being said: Killer project man, I'm jealous!

Had to do some massaging to the frame to get the headers in today. Had the motor in and out about three times to get it perfect. Just going to throw them in once more to mark where the o2 sensors will go, weld emm up, and then send em for coating. Hoping my Street and Performance package comes sometime this week:thumbsup:

Got a ton of work done today! A/C compressor's all mocked in place with the idler pulleys. The harmonic balancer is on. For the 3rd time I have the wrong alternator:faint: so hopefully this week I can get the right one. Street and Performance did some great work on all my brackets and they all seem to line up perfectly. They gave ,e the wrong P/S pulley so this week I'm hoping to recieve the right one. My Procharger comes back this week as well as the crank pulley so I'm hoping to mock those items up and then the front of the motor will be done. Ordered my tank from Rick's Thursday as well:). So that should be here in a month or so.

This week or the next I will be ordering the rest of the due dads for my fuel system (the fuel rails, regulator, filters and such). Rich I have run into so many problems with the front of the motor trying to get a good belt wrap on the water pump and crank pulley, so I sent a lot of my Procharger stuff to Street and Performance today to see if they can work something out. I'm waiting on my Wilwood master to be off backorder, and this week I'm going to try and clean the dimples I had to put in my headers so I can send them out for coating. I've been working like 70 hours a week trying to get some cash for the car saved so within the next few weeks I should be ordering the engine harness, the fans and radiator, my ATS spindles, hopefully maybe some brakes, and the rest of the filters and rails and odds and ends for the fuel system and gauges to fire this thing up. I got my hydraboost this week and threw the booster in. We started putting the A/C in so hopefully after this is done and the dash, rear seat and nose is on it can go for the cage!
P.S. we did a lot more on the A/C we're just waiting for the firewall plate to be back from painting to put in:)

Hey guys, been really busy all summer working like 70 hours a week, now I started school so between work and homework I don't have any time to breathe. I got a chance to work on the car today and got a lot done. Street and Performance sent me they're newest update to my front accessory set-up. This one looks like it's going to work, they just sent me one pulley wrong, and I have to figure out how to get the god damn belt on. I got the a/c box in, put the dash in for mock up when I bring it for the cage. I'm 75% sure I can put the computer under the dash, just have to try a few more things then I can order the harness. Also measured the spacing for the radiator so I can order that and started mocking up in my head the intercooler piping. So hopefully I'll be able to find some time and get some more progress for you guys:D

Hey guys sorry for not having so many updates been SUPER busy. I been buying some new parts and such, haven't really had a chance to do anything major to the car. Got the computer location mocked up, started mocking up the condenser. And even better news, the car FINALLY after 8 months has a fan belt and blower belt that clears with no problems, lines up and will work. So the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders with that:woot:. I picked up a set of brand new Corebeau seats at a local swap meet for $550 for the pair, so I definitely scored there. The tracks are out of a 75-79 Firebird/Camaro so if anyone knows someone who needs the tracks I gotta unload em so I can get the right ones. I got my ATS spindles, and my Wilwood polished master. My radiator should be here within two weeks, and the second/third week of November the car is scheduled to go for roll cage, headers/exhaust, sub-frame connecters and all that jazz. And last but not least, I have been working my butt off in college and keeping that my number one priority for all you guys who have been asking about my school, I have a solid 3.4 gpa for 12 credits so far in my first semester so I am very proud of myself there. hey guys!
Been super busy, but I've been working on the car just haven't posted any pictures:_paranoid . I got my computer harness, so that's the plan this weekend to mock all that up. I got my radiator which is totally gorgeous thumbs up for PRC. I measured perfectly and just clears my steering box, so I bought an aftermarket rad support (so I don't have to hack up my good original one) that I cut the opening as big as possible to get as much air flow, also started mounting my condenser which hopefully will have the brackets finished tomorrow so I can tig it all up. Also have to modify where the radiator sits and the top support bracket so hopefully either thanksgiving or on Sunday will be doing that. I put my Aeromotive fuel rails on and got all my AN fittings for the fuel system, just have to put the tank in, run a return line, and drill the holes for the boost fuel regulator then that wraps that up (again hopefully finishing that this week). I'm just trying to wrap up all the loose ends before starting anything else. Here's some pictures hopefully will have a lot more soon.

Hey guys, got a ton of work done today, mounted my condenser half way (I need to get fittings to finalize it), mounted my computer nice and cleanly under the dash, switched over the tracks on my seats and put them in the car, and started plumbing my fuel system. I have everything under the hood done and all the AN fittings done, with the fuel pressure regulator mounted. Just gotta make hard lines and put the tank in:thumbsup:. Hoping to finish mounting the radiator and finish up the rad support this week, also going to start fitting the fender wells with the a/c compressor/Procharger. Hey the project is looking good. I do have a question for you though. Your fuel sustem has me confused?? Is that the fuel pump down on the passenger side going into a y-block before entering the rails? If so, I dont get how the fuel regulator is going to regulate the fuel pressure since its after the rails? If the pressure is coming into the regulator up on the firewall, then where do the lines run to on the front of the rails?? Just curious:_paranoid
tuff57
02-08-2011, 04:11 PM
The fuel pump is in the tank the feedline comes up to the front of the motor and splits into both fuel rails which exits seperately and enters the fuel pressure regulator which is boost regulated and mounted on the firewall which hooks to a return line which runs back to the tank. It is the opposite of a set up for a carburetor. I did it exactly the way aeromotive recommended for the coolest possible delivery of fuel and/or the least chance of fuel delivery problems

Just read through this whole thread and what a great story. You're doing an amazing job on your car and I'll enjoy following it from here.
What a special thing to be doing it with your Dad. When I was your age and fixing up my Datsun 510, my 'ol man wanted nothing to do with it. He couldn't figure out why I wanted to do that to a perfectly good car. You know, lower it, hop up the engine and so on. Anyway, enjoy the experience, it will stay with you for life. I can't wait to do something similar with one or both of my kids.
Keep up the great work and your great attitude!

Hey guys,
Went to see the car today! Last week the fuel pump died on my father's S10 so we had to get towed back from Jersey:faint: so we were unable to make it. Here are all the pictures I took, I personally think it looks awesome and couldn't be happier. I took a picture of myself with the car so you guys know who's behind all the work as well:P
Thanks!
Joe

Picked the car up last weekend finally! Here are the final pics of everything. Ordered my brakes 6 Piston calipers and 13 inch rotors up front with 4 piston calipers out back with 13 inch rotors from Wilwood. The plans now are just to get it running, I have SO MUCH cleaning to do as I think my fingers are going to fall off from everything I've done so far cleaning wise. Within the next few weeks I plan on finishing the fuel lines, and wiring the whole car up so I can start it up so expect a video of it running within the next month or so:D
here are all the pictures I got! Sorry I don't have any of the exhaust, I couldn't get any good angles with it on the ground.
