Being aircooled, cylinders won't last long. Dude definitely knows his way around a machine shop.

You would think with his fab skills he would at least build and install a cage! At least he wore a helmet ...LOL!

Here's the first start video.

Brats and beer on the table with your buds cheering on the first startup - I guess we all can relate to that.

But... being a cold war B-52/KC-135 mechanic who spent may months in underground alert facilities waiting to launch our missle - that music in the first video always scares the crap outta me ...

Just because you can.... doesn't mean you should.

Kind of a complete waste of skills and perfectly good metal...

there looks to be a couple of electric visible fans drawing air from the passenger compartment onto the cylinders... they are vissible in the shot of the interior of the finished car (3:30 min)...

and asside from that merlin v12 powered 55 chevy some insane australian guy built.. i think it is perhaps the most over powered car in existance... especially for that size rear wheels

Deuce -- You must be talking about Charley Lillards 55 Merlin!!

Very cool. Love how he managed to fit it into such a small car, the packaging wins an award! Awesome work on the transmission too.

Speaking of aircraft engines in cars... while not as cool as this one and nowhere near as nice as the Merlin powered 55 that was built at Castlemaine and now owned by Charlie, I missed buying this on ebay several years back by one bid... I got stuck in traffic on the way home and got "sniped" at the last minute. Got beat by $100. I would have stayed a few minutes late at work to bid but ebay is blocked by our content filter so I had to dash home... and didn't make it.

It's an Opel GT with an Allison V-1710 out back hooked to an Allison automatic transmission and axle out of a Greyhound bus. It was a little dirty but it ran and was all there. It was also pre-74 so I wouldn't have to worry about the California smog checks.

My plan was to clean it up and replace the muffled exhaust with zoomies out the top so I could cruise around town and be really obnoxious.

Don't know what happened to it. The ebay seller forwarded my contact info to the buyer (I wanted it bad!) but I never heard from the new owner. My guess is that it was parted out for spares for an aircraft or tractor puller.

At least it is liquid cooled. Seen it in person and heard it as well. The floor vibrates when he fires it up:thumbsup:

That article is somewhat incorrect... they say Merlin a couple times, but they also say "tank engine"-- the Meteor was the derivative of the Merlin used in tanks and it's a Meteor under the hood.

The Meteor used a lot of steel parts instead of aluminum/magnesium (tanks didn't really need the weight savings) and they also lacked the supercharger of the Merlin so they would run reliably on low-octane "over the road" fuel but at the expense of being way down on horsepower (less than 1/2) compared to the Merlin.

The engine in that Rover lacks the distinct 2-stage supercharger case and accessory drive section of the Merlin-- so I'm inclined to believe it's a Meteor. Reading on other websites confirm the engine as a Meteor.

Still one hell of a job stuffing it into the car... or rather making the car fit around it.

I'd still drive it. :D

I think he has it on ITBs now, must need a big throttle with each cylinder over 2 litres, [not sure on the cui conversion]
