We’ve been busy with many different projects and it’s been a while since we’ve posted a build thread on one. This build is different from most cars we build and for good reason. It is being built as a shop car that (I hope) most people will relate too.
The timing (I think) couldn’t be better being that lately there have been quite a few threads about build costs etc. In a sea of current high caliber / high profile builds, we set out to build a car that most relates to the majority of potential clients. Although the high caliber cars are great for this hobby and for those who are building them, the reality is that most of the people calling or visiting the shop can’t relate to why a car of that caliber costs so much. That is simply because those cars are engineered and purpose built. With that said, the purpose of most car enthusiasts that inquire is to have a practical performance street driven car that sees more road and show time than track time. I as much as the next guy loves a great piece of eye candy that can out perform the new super cars of today but the bottom line is that most people can’t afford such a build and/or it is overkill for their particular situation. It would be like Grandma buying a Ferrari to go grocery shopping. So after a long design and thought process it was apparent that I should try to meet the majority demand of those who inquire. First we chose a car we believe is becoming very popular right now. Then we set out to minimize cost by lessening the amount of hardcore fabrication (which simply is time multiplied by hourly rate) and focused on attention to detail while using for the most part aftermarket bolt-on parts in lieu of over the top fabricated ones. I know this build won’t be for everyone as there always seems to be someone who thinks differently and has a better idea. But if most people view this build with an open mind on possibilities within a budget and not an open checkbook, it should be enlightening.

Here is some info on this build:

Vehicle: 1967 Chevrolet Nova (low mileage, super clean and solid Midwest car requiring NO body panel replacement or patching)

A few CNC'd parts and detailed photos of components:
The CA clip usually reuses the stock body shims. We CNC'd our own "one-piece" version. We also created a "thinner" more low profile decorative bolt washer that we will soon produce for the public. Notice the rubber backer washer for a non-paint chipping installation. We also made up a set of CNC'd Billet Tail lights with one-piece lenses.
The suspension parts shown have all been media blasted and powdercoated in a Matte Black and / or Charcoal finish and all the factory Zinc "plated" mild steel hardware has been replaced with Stainless Steel.

Looking good. Any chance you'll be making any more parts for the 1st & 2nd gen Novas? Also, is there any particular reason you chose the CA front clip and the TCI rear setup over some of the others out there? Love the project!!

Thanks !
We chose the CA clip because we feel it is one of the best aftermarket clips out there. IMO its the most complete system and is better engineered, has better overall craftsmanship and offers several different options in regards to control arms, steering, brakes etc. Nothing against the others but again, we are trying to use mostly "off the shelf" aftermarket pieces on this build. Using a company that offers more options opens the door for future upgrades. Same goes for the TCI 4 Link. That system utilizes a new foward cross member and eliminates the existing spring perch pockets and is overall a complete package rather that using the stock bracketry like other systems out there.
As far as the tail lights.....LOL I knew we would spark some interest with those. And although there would be a market for them, we made these on our own time to see whats possible with our new machine. Currently there are 2 great companys out there that have made quite a name for themselves in the "billet industry" and we feel there would be no room for another.
Thanks for the compliments !

Killer Steve! That has always been one of my favorite body styles!

So -- judging by the taillight you're showing - you've got some mods going on in the quarters??

HRBS
02-22-2010, 03:36 PM
Thanks Greg.
Actually no mods at all to the quarters.
The Billet ones we made duplicate the factory shape and fit into the factory position. We just made them to house a one piece lens. The lens we made from 3/16" thick red acyrlic and used a diffuser in back.
We will run LED's behind. There is no provision for a back-up lens (at this time).
In this pic, the lovely Mrs HRBS is holding the new one up against the factory one to show the difference.

Okay -- It must just be the way the photo is taken - because YOUR billet version looks FAR LARGER than the stock one in the photo --- that's why I thought maybe you were going to mod the quarters.

Nice work by the way -- real nice!

Tracy.... i bought it site unseen on the prior owners word that is was solid. I was expecting that to be slightly false and have a rot box show up. The original plan was to cut it up like all my other builds but after it showed up I kinda had a heart.... (imagine that).

Wheels showed up today in unbelievable time. 3 weeks from ordering.
They're Intro ID321 in Matte Charcoal. Sizes: 19x11 &18x8

Tires should be here this week. Once I get the tires mounted, I can start building the rear section and rear housing. Next it will be off to Media Blast so I can finish the bottom side while doing the rear section. I made it a point to get this into body prep by April 1st (all while working around customer cars) !! :willy:

Jim.. thanks for the good words. I have to imagine and price this build as if it were being built for a customer. To be fair to other builders on the site, I dont want to throw a number out there. I will say as a turn key build, start to finish adding all parts cost, & labor it will be over $60k and under $80k when completed. That will include a custom stitched, hand built, one-off interior that will really make the car stand out. (ps.. that also includes the original cost of the car [$3,800])

We are working on producing these. We made enough for this build and I am currently working on packaging and pricing etc. I am running a few more off in between other projects. I dont think I will offer complete car "kits" as there are way too many cars out there. But we will offer a complete unit with washer, bolt and rubber backing as a whole. You will just need to know the quantity and order accordingly. Currently I am working with a local anodizer, trying to get a deal on anodizing them in mass quanities.

Back from Media blast and this thing is more SOLID than I previously thought !
The only surprise was that the passenger side of the rear window channel was pretty much non-existent. Other than that, its ready for epoxy prime and body work. The under side will be first :unibrow:

Yep.... the car is 95% original. There was a small lower quarter patch put on during its lifetime. It is a pretty decent job, so we'll leave it and rework the area a little. The insides of the front fenders and lower sections of both doors look like THEY were in a museum ! LOL

A) I did "STEAL" this car for what I paid.
B) Its a pleasure working with something that isnt a "Right Coast Salt Bucket".

Actually, this is THE reason I redesigned the intent and "theme" of this build.
Some would frown upon a shop doing a "mailorder bolt together" car but I just could not see cutting this one up to fabricate parts and defeat the purpose of starting with such a solid car.

With that said, look for some cool "mailorder bolt on parts" soon ! :_paranoid

We have to thank Shannon at MODO Innovations for letting us help out with his new product. MODO Innovations now offers an electric trunk latch kit for 1966-67 Nova/Chevy II's. Some minor metal trimming is required to make the latch fit but the install was a walk in the park. The kit includes everything that is needed right down to the factory type screws and wire crimp connectors. The part number for this vehicle is MI 810.

The guys in the body shop had to finish up another big project first so it got off to a slow start. (we never have nor will we ever do in house body/paint. I leave that up to those who do it 100% of the time for a living).
The body got mounted up on the rotisserie, found a small spot we felt needed attention and smoothed the backside door skin area for a clean smooth look.
Once I got the bumpers back from the plater, we preped, masked and undercoated the backsides. All the bracketry was coated in the satin charcoal (I am really diggin this color/finish).
We will start to move quicker in the days to come.
But for now.... enjoy:

No problem Marty.
I have another batch going to my coater next week for a different project.
I will get the info then.
ps.... any coater should be able to match a paint color with powder. I was amazed at the way powder technology has advanced over the last few years.
He tried talking me into a candy color early on, but I knew this project was going for a more factory / restomod look.

I little change in plans as far as the rear end goes. Trying to keep with all things "bolt-on" or available aftermarket, TCI (Total Cost Involved)stepped up with one of their "bolt-in" rear housing assemblies. This assembly is complete to order: cut to length, proper bracketry with proper drive angle, choice of gear ratio, 31 spline center section posi. Its as close to a custom made to order rear but in a "bolt-in" package.
We have also opted for Clayton Machines Pedal assemblies. All I can say is WOW.... Stay tuned !

We want to thank Performance Vehicle Works (https://performancevehicleworks.com/Nova_Replacement_Dash.html)for working with us on a set of their Replacement Dash Bezels. They are made from 18 gauge steel and fit into your stock dash bezel openings. They come standard with the holes cut for 3-3/8 Tach and Speedometer and 2-1/16 oil, water, fuel and amp or volt gauge. They also offer different gauge layouts if you prefer at no extra charge. The bezel comes with 4 upper screw holes predrilled to fit into the factory locations and they even provide a ground stud on the backside of the bezel. The Radio Bezel panel is also made from 18 gauge steel and comes with or without gauge holes. The fit and finish is absolutely incredible !
If you are looking for an alternative to a stock dash bezel or are tired of the plastic competitors fitment issues, give them a shout. They make kits for 66/67 Novas as well as 69-77 Novas !!

IMO it is the nicest finish of all the bedliners out there.
Great texture, not to "chunky", great color sheen (not too dull, not too shiney) etc. And for $110 you cant beat the price.
The reason we went with this over painting (believe me I had second thoughts after seeing how nice the floors were on this car) was because we've done several high dollar builds for clients with painted body color floors, polished stainless exhaust, detailed to the 9's etc only to be a maintance headache. This car is going to driven... ALOT. I dont want to spend days on my back detailing the underside. A simple hose rinse and it'll be as good as new.

Doug.... I am really on the fence. Originally I wanted Air Bags, but am leaning towards Coil-Overs. I am still undecided. I'd love to bag it but routing the lines for a super clean look will take alot of thru-frame bulkheads at this point.
This will be one of those last mintute "pull the trigger" decisions :_paranoid

The "Bitch" has taken a back seat for the past few weeks but we are back on it. Here are some pics of the interior and truck. The floors were coated with a semi gloss black epoxy and the trunk was finished with Raptor like the underside. Also we are very thankfull to Jim, Mike and Staci at Ring Brothers for helping us out with a set of door handles. These things are killer but we cant leave well enough alone. I have plans for these.... :unibrow:

what type of foam are you using for the dash?

HRBS
10-01-2010, 04:20 PM
Thanks guys.....
GM: Its a super dense hard foam similar to that which you would find in a hull of a boat. Its very easy to carve and sand to shape. Once we have the desired look we will fiberglass resin the top piece. It will remain two pieces so we can easily remove it to wire the dash. It will be finished in a two tone leather. The top will be black and the bottom will be........

Did you delete the wiper arm holes on the cowl?

Yes Mark we did. I was originally going to fill the grills only but after some thought I came to the conclusion that this car and others like it most likely will not run autocross in the rain, go to a car show in the rain, or taken out for a sunday cruise in the rain. So I removed the mechanics of the wipers and filled it. When detailing we always use Rain-X and other water repellent products that shed water anyway. I've been caught in the rain a handfull of times coming back from such events where the rain-x worked perfectly for the short drive back.

Clayton Machine Works helped out BIG TIME by working with us to get us the 1st set of Black Anodized "new style" Door Handles and Window Cranks. He also provided us with Billet Brake Arm Assembly w/ Pad & Some trick Billet Trim that we will use on several pieces during the remaining portion of the build. Clay is a true Hot Rod enthusiast who has a real passion for designing and producing billet components for the aftermarket. His creations are all works of art. If any of you have worked with Clay in the past or purchased his parts, then this is no surprise. For those who have yet to, enjoy.... (even the packaging is a work of art)

Fits 1949-up GM & Ford.

Robbie.... the car has no stereo and without one that center area was too plain. It does not open. Its a fixed accent piece for now.

The "mesh" was an idea I had for a while and just couldnt find the right project for it. After some thought we decided to powdercoat the perforated mesh and use the white leather as a background. I am very happy with the result. I can only take credit for the idea and colors. My long time upholsterer Mike gets ALL the execusion credit not to mention perfecting my idea.

Thanks Shannon..... I would love to show how I wired up your remote trunk but we did it so stealth that there is NO trace of ANY wires !
We were able to snake it down the lid, into the trunk hinge, down the backside of the wheel well, across the lower package tray and then down the trans tunnel. We have a really trick idea for the button mount inside the center console.... you will be happy !
For now.... here are some pics:

The battery will be hidden from view once upholstered. Therefor I made a shut off switch mounting plate that will also act as a structural brace once the upholstery panels are layed against them vertically. On the opposite side of the trunk (out of view) I mounted Remote Battery Terminals for charging.

The past few months we have been working slowly on plumbing the fuel system and brakes which is nothing to really take pics of or post.
So here are a few little things that have been done over that time that are worth showing.....

Custom CLEAR glass (for contrast with the black trim and off white upholstery)

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff143/hrbs/Nova%20Build/IMG_0799.jpg

Once the all the trim was repaired and scotch brited it was prepared for Satin Matte Black Powdercoat.

Finished Install (with all new rubber and stops etc):

Love what you did with the trim.
Did you reuse the 1/4 window frames?
If so, was it much work preparing them for powder coating?

HRBS
05-13-2011, 04:39 PM
Bossanova,
All the window trim (and I mean ALL of it) was sent to George Lucas of http://www.glmetalpolishing.com/. George repaired any and all dents and straightened all the pieces before sanding them down with 180 grit. He then puts a red scotchbrite pad on the polishing wheel and meticulously preps each piece. They come out with a smooth yet clean texture for the Powdercoat to adhere too. We had a few pieces that gave us a gard time during assembly and the powder never chipped or became scratched.
As far as the 1/4 windows.... (if you are refering to Vent Windows), they were fairly easy to dissassemble. You NEED to be patient as a few pieces are pretty stubborn from 40+ years of grime. I found the following link to be very informative for taking these apart:
http://www.bthomas1967chevy2wagon.com/Home/Brent/1967ChevyII/VentWindowRebuild.aspx

Thanks for good words..... I will post some better pics of the completed side glass soon

I did the same thing in the trunk area, except I ran in with an existing bundle up to the firewall and put the button in the glove box like my dad's old Buick. Still feels cool to hit the button though.

Can't wait to see the door panels and how the Clayton pieces work with it. Planning the same sometime in the distant future.

The idea for the interior was to have something that resembles a new luxury car. In other words.... "classy" or "elegant" and not too "street rod".
So the truck was covered up in an OEM material and basically has no thrills:

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff143/hrbs/Nova%20Build/IMG_0899.jpg

The headliner is getting a slim decorative console trimmed with billet strips (not 100% on this design yet).

When the dash was made; that is fiberglass with leather covering, if so- what adhesive was used?

For now....the Bumpers will stay but I may shave the bolts in the future.
Page 14 of this thread has some really good close ups of the bolts/washers both on and off the car. The dash was carved from dense foam then glazed with fiberglass, sanded to shape and then wrapped. The adhesive is the standardized stuff upholsterers use.

Its design intent was to be subtle, CLEAN & classy. Similar to something you would find in a new car today. We didnt go crazy on the fabrication, but we did pay attention to detail. Hearing all the feedback makes me feel like we achieved our goal. This by NO means is a SMOY contender. We just wanted to show what was possible using mostly "off-the-shelf" aftermarket parts (after a little modifing).
