In a 67 Impala, what would the driving differences be in a nice 383 stroker small block vs a 425 hp 454?
Want the car to be more of a cruiser, 4spd auto, good low end, but very drivable on the highway...
I have a marine 454 to rebuild, but I'm thinking a Crate 383 w/aluminum head would be cheaper and lighter...maybe just what I need/

Any real-world advise would be apreciated...

i had a 66 2dr ss that had a 327 and a 4 speed.. swapped in a 454 and a 700r4 and it just suited that car so much better.. its a big heavy car.. and the low end of a big block just makes it a totally different ride...

i can tell you from first hand experience that a big block suits that car.. it looks right ta home in that enormous engine bay.. and you will love poping the hood..

a crate 383 might be alittle cheaper, and lighter... but it will not deliver the same torque,

an aluminum headed 425 Hp 383 will run you 6500+ and a 450 hp 502 crate costs 8000+ im sure you can rebuild the 454 for 6500 including aluminum heads and intake... and make well above 425 hp

the smart move is ofcourse a diesel with todays fuelprices.. but thats a different story :-)

425hp is not much peformance from either engine. A GM crate 454 makes 450hp and over 500 lbft with a wimpy cam and small heads. I like the big block in these circumstances also. You'll have 500 ftlbs at 2000 rpm with a decent set of heads and a small hydraulic roller.
