I posted this on PT also, just trying to see how many would be interested in being involved in an event similar to what we do in Pigeon Forge, except this one would be on the West Coast.
OK, everyone has asked for one. After my trip out I think we have found a location to have one hell of an event.
Now is the time to step up and commit to being there if we can pull it off. No money needed but I do need to know if we are talking 10 guys or 100 cars. I am thinking sometime in late summer, probably August. If you can be there, participating to some degree, chime in to this thread. Please, chime in only if you can come, I don't need to hear that you would be there if you had a battery or something. We will have spectator areas too so all that is good, but I need a head count on who could come and spend $75 or $100 to make an event happen out here.

Yea, we're going to see if we can make this happen. My management at the magazine seemed up to the idea.
El Toro would be a great spot. I picture a smaller "tight" autocross combined with a larger "fast" autocross. I've seen cars hit 90 mph at autocrosses there since there's so much room.
Here's an example of a 2.2 MILE autocross they do there... yea, 2.2 FREAKING MILES! lol
Maybe that will hush up the "35mph in a Walmart parking lot" crowd.. ;)

El Toro is a great spot! It's big enough that last year when we took the Evolution school there were actually 3 different autocrosses set up and running at the same time. I'm sure it could be designed with a big course, a small course, and a very comfortable paddock.

Have you looked at any of the Road course tracks on the West Coast? Then you could do some drag racing, some road course and autocross. Just curious. I have been thinking we need a West coast event for a while.

The problem is that they are all out in "ehh" areas.. Plus in August the weather at El Toro would be 100% better than either Buttonwillow or Willow Springs.
At El Toro we can have it all.. possibly even some sort of single car drag event or 0-100-0 deal.
And the location is NICE. Surrounded by good areas where you don't have to worry about leaving your car out overnight.
And a big enough autocross (like that video) is 95% as good as any road course.

Portland Internation Raceway, is a road course, a drag strip and they have room for an Autocross. They have autocross events there but not sure if its usually clubs that hold them or if its the track. They also have a motorcross area.

Update! We are working through some issues, mostly insurance for the event, it is extremely expensive, but we will get there. If all goes well, we will have not one, but TWO El Toro events this year. More soon, I promise.
As far as car goes, we will have a tech team to be sure the car has good linkage for throttle, good brake pedal, battery strapped down, nothing loose in car or trunk, all lug nuts, no floor mats, just standard stuff. Must wear helmet, must have at least a lap belt, even though I prefer a 5 point. This is Protouring, not race cars and I don't think most street cars are going to have a cage. I will be sure the track is slowed down so speeds will not be crazy. My thoughts are we build street cars we can race, not race cars with tags. I will also allow new camaros, mustangs, vettes to participate so if your pt car is not finished, get out that DD and come have fun.

OK, this is not a formal announcement guys, but.........
Mark the weekend of April 2-4 on your calendar and start saving your change, you will probably need about $125 that weekend.
Vendors reading this, mark your calendars also, we need your support. I will be sending out info to all those that have already inquired about a spot as soon as I have conformation back from the city.
If you have extra coins, you may want to save them for Labor Day weekend also.....:captain:

Early April is possible for me but Labor day is out.
Bill could you PM or email me the rules for the event? I want to make sure my car meets tech. I think all it needs now is a battery strap vs. the factory tab.
Thanks!
Jon
Bill Howell
02-05-2010, 05:57 PM
We will have the rules up soon. But if your car is streetable and will pass California inspections you will not have any issues here. Factory tie down is fine, you would be suprised at the people that simply place a battery in the hole and wire it up, no strap, tab or anything.

Todd -- I hear a customer calling... better get the phone.
Doug -- I have the jimmi leg thing - so I drink TONIC (sans the gin) every night and that cures it. Seriously. Thanks for the room offer - but I was planning on staying in Charley's multi-million dollar motorhome... Jody is bringing it down - not sure where Charley is staying.

OK guys, this has been a tough week to pull all this together so quickly but time was not on our side. I have set up a new website that will serve not only as a registration spot for all events I put on, but will also cover the other ones that I attend with pictures, and talk about those events.
Please click here www.octaneforyourbrain.com to register for the 1st annual El Toro event. The cost is $150. It will be April 2-4, 2010, so as you can see, the sooner you register the better. I am limiting the number of registrations to 65 cars, so please, if you want in, please register now. You will have a spot as you go thru the registration where you need to select which day (Friday or Saturday) that you want to run at El Toro. The first 30 that register on Friday will be locked in and the first 35 that register on Saturday will be locked in. Others will be moved to the opposite day, so register asap so you are guarenteed your choice of days. Spectators, volunteers and participates are welcomed both days, see you there.
We will also have a Vendor and Media Class running on Friday. Everyone will be invited for both days, but we can only get about 40 or so per day thru and be sure everyone gets to run. I will have a set of rules up soon. Also, we are trying to fill up the field with pre 80 cars first. Any one with a newer car will be allowed but if your car is newer than that, it will not be in the running for King of the Coast.
Besides the two days at El Toro, we will have a cruise on Sunday morning. Those details are now being finalized but look for a great time on Sunday also.
One other thing in this post before it gets too long.
Optima has stepped up and offered an invite for the winner to the prestigous Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge after SEMA this year, so you have one more reason to sign up soon. Having been invited to this last year, I can tell you what a thrill it was to be there and run with some of the best cars in the industry.
The prefered payment method on the registration site is Paypal, however, if you have another way you rather pay, just comment in the right section and we will do whatever. However, until your payment is in my hand, you are not confirmed as a participant. I hate to do that but it is the only way I can be fair to everyone concerned.
Thanks for wading thru this long post, Yancy, Danny and myself look forward to being your hosts and bringing a little Southern Hospitality to LA.

Ridetech is the official sponsor of the El Toro Autocross. Bret and crew have been doing autocross events across the country with GoodGuys so no one does it better or has more experience, thanks guys for the support.
Baer Brakes has stepped up and is sponsoring the Baer Speed Stop Challenge. This will be their version of 0-60-0 but with a twist. Sorry, but I will not announce the twist until April 2. Every day the news gets better and more sponsors are calling and joining in on the fun.
Tomorrow I will let everyone know about two other MAJOR sponsor announcements, stay tuned.

This is so exciting. Forgeline and GP SUPERSTORE have teamed up for one great door prize. For the price of entry fee, now everyone (except vendors) will be eligible for a FREE set of Forgelines. This is a HUGE door prize guys, one of the most expensive ones I have given away. This is worth the price to play even if you didn't come...haha
Thanks so much to both Forgeline-now the official wheel company of the event and to Frank for, as always supporting these events. Without great sponsors, we just couldn't do these events.
Stay tuned, more info coming tomorrow!

I am due for surgery on the 24th (having a pain pump installed) but will do my best to make it to the event and meet all of you and run the car as hard as I can.
If I can't make it due to complications from the implant etc, I'll let Bill know so a spot can free up.
Ambitious I know, but I don't feel ANY pain when I'm on the track. Adrenaline is a natural painkiller.

Besides the two days at El Toro, we will have a cruise on Sunday morning. Those details are now being finalized but look for a great time on Sunday also.
__________________
Details for the Cruise Route as follows:
Wanting to take advantage of that rare time of year when the surrounding hills are actually green instead of brown (hoping that still to be true by beginning of April), we wanted to incorporate something scenic and somewhat fun to drive (not a lot of options in the midst of the ever sprawling concrete jungle!) so have opted for a short 80 mile jaunt through South Orange County's Cleveland National Forest and the 2 lane roads of Ortega Highway.
The route as planned starts mostly with surface streets from El Toro to Hwy 74 (5 freeway south to the East Ortega Hwy exit can also be used if a shorter/quicker option if desired). We then cross over the mountain and drop down into Lake Elsinore, where the route then runs parallel to the 15 freeway north along Temescal Canyon Road. Eventually we're forced to engange the 15 freeway north and the eventual termination of the journey at the Spectre Performance offices and shop (Note; again, a more direct 15 Freeway option is available starting in Lake Elsinore for those that just love the Southern California freeway experience......... less stop lights, less twisty roads......... can't promise that's it's less traffic though). As for traffic........ seems it's always busy on the weekends in So Cal, so wouldn't expect that Easter day would be any different, all we can hope is that being early enough in the day (beleive the plan is to leave El Toro area around 10AM?.......... will post better timeline details as they develop) that a 2 1/2 to 3 hour tour is do-able.
Route Map Attached.
For those with trailers, it's about a 45 minute to 1 hour drive (traffic permitting) taking the more direct I5 freeway route ( 5 freeway north to the 57 north, 57 merges with the 60 east, exit Vinyard offramp..... you can contact me directly....
[email protected] for better details or they will also be available both Saturday and Sunday AM). For those that are flying out and haven't already made arrangements, we're approximately 5 minutes from the Ontario airport and would be happy to provide transportation if needed. For those on the West Coast staying for other events, your welcome to park your rig with ours in our enclosed yard that now offers video survellence (sometimes you learn the hard way).
Food, drink and plenty of parking. Looking forward to seeing everyone and anyone that can make it.

Guys I gotta bow out. I just found out I won't be released from the hospital until the 26th. So that'd give me a little less than 2 weeks recovery before hitting the track. Its just cutting it too close. I'm getting a pain pump implant, so its a bit more complicated than just 'recovery' as well. I may respond poor to the implant, the meds etc, and the last place I want to be is on a racetrack adjusting to those meds...
The tire wear rating thing was a bit of a surprise as well. :(
If I'm feeling up to attending the event I will try to make it down, meet you all and shake some hands. But I think pushing my car to its limits with a new pain med implants just pushing the limit.
I need to focus on getting myself sorted, not my car for once.
Good luck everyone! I hope Bill can find someone to replace me.

I've withdrawn my entry because of surgery and boy am I glad I did.
I've been laying down fulltime for 5 days straight in level 10 pain. Anything vertical or even sitting on the toilet causes my spinal fluid to drain out of my skull and into my cavity, which causes a massive ****ing headache within 5-15 seconds of trying to stand up or sit up. It has SUCKED.
Hands down the gnarliest thing I've experienced and I would never wish this amount of pain on anyone. Tonights the first time i'm showing signs of improvement (able to situp kinda to use laptop). I hope it continues tomorrow. Insanely bored and I'd like to get back to work.
I definitely have a week or maybe 2-3 even of recovery, so I'm glad I have two RC models to build to build. A Austin Mini racing kit thats FWD and an R34 AWD kit from tamiya. LOVED bulding these when I was little. Great projects while I recover.I even have the metallic black paint for the mini kit, gold for the wheels and chrome etc.
Someone take my spot at this event!

...and to put this in perspective, my understanding is that the GT was owned and driven by the father of the guy who runs the driving school and had more than a few laps on that particular track. David didn't attend the driving school on Friday and ran the course for the first time just before running his competition laps. And yeah - the guy in the Porsche deserves all the kudos in the world for flogging it the way that he did.
...another note, there were some sector times recorded within the overall lap times and it was pointed out after the fact that Mary in her '73 was actually faster in some of the sectors than the Carrera. That says tons about the abilities of a leaf spring car (and Mary's improving road course skills)...

Thanks Greg! Wish we could go back and live it again---feel like it went by so fast--really looking forward to the next one---you'll have to hangout a bit longer next time. Still planning for PT--or mini PT with us in June to Pleasanton?

Doug - Wish I could answer either of those - motor is still bits and pieces - crank and rods arrived yesterday... heads are here... now to get the shop "cranking" (pun).
AutoRad said the radiator went to polisher this week...
I know June sounds like plenty of time - but I also have a college graduation in Phoenix mid May - and one moving down there the following week - so her car and "belongings" going down in the trailer around the 24th of May... blah blah blah... so if I could just get everything to cooperate - and no parts shortages... I may beg off PT and do Mini with you guys... which would be "easier" than getting my BFA to Newton Iower....

Hey now, we used to play Newton in football. I don't know what was in the water but those boys were huuuuuge.

BTW - Not that anyone cares ------ NO I never got the tie-down straps back from the boys loading the Nova in the hotel parking lot.
I never asked for them to be returned -- the young man OFFERED to return them and took my address.... in my mind, they were a "gift".
I hope they made it home safely and with the car intact..... NOT!!! :woot:

Well he offered he should atleast be a man of his word.
I mean we could of let him leave without having helped him. Of course the car would of no longer been on the trailer when he got home.

Well -- I just hope whenever he uses the straps - he feels a tinge of guilt...

I cant believe those guys didn't return the straps. They would still be on the side of the road picking up scraps, if you had let them leave.
Payback will suck.

Mike -- It's no skin on my nose -- really -- I have plenty of them - way more than I can use. I just was sad that they couldn't follow thru what they promised. I carry no grudge nor wish them ill. I hope they made it without incident.
Hey! You bought a trailer yet?? :unibrow:
