The Faceoff in the Flatlands is now The Faceoff at Road America!

Detroit Speed and Engineering and Baer Brakes have teamed up with OPTIMA Batteries to bring this exciting new event to the historic and world-renowned Road America racetrack.

The OPTIMA Batteries Faceoff at Road America presented by Detroit Speed & Engineering and Baer Brakes will be a combination of track, autocross, speed-stop and street driving elements, all taking place at the famed Road America facility in Elkhart Lake, WI on May 1st and 2nd.

According to Todd Gartshore, Vice President of Marketing at Baer Brakes, “Baer was excited to be partnered with Detroit Speed to produce our Faceoff in the Flatlands event and that enthusiasm is redoubled with Optima’s invitation to partner with us to present the Faceoff at Road-America. We’re jazzed about being able to provide enthusiasts an opportunity to run hard at America’s most beautiful road course!”

The new Faceoff at Road America event will be the first in an ongoing series of qualifiers for the OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational, held each year immediately following the SEMA show. In addition to other great prizes, the overall winner of the Faceoff at Road America will receive an invitation to the Ultimate Street Car Invitational to compete with 50 of the highest quality street cars on the planet for the coveted title of “Ultimate Street Car”.

“Detroit Speed is excited to be a part of Optima’s Regional qualifier at the Faceoff at Road America!” said DSE chief Kyle Tucker. “We look forward to continuing the partnership with Baer and meeting everyone for a fun-filled weekend at one of the premier road courses in America.”

“We’re really excited to partner with Baer and DSE for this new event” said Cam Douglass, Director of Product Development & Marketing at OPTIMA Batteries. “This new series of qualifying events will take place throughout the country and open the door for a lot of enthusiasts and builders to compete for an invitation to the big dance.”

Final details are in the works. Please check out www.optimainvitational.com/faceoff for more details in the upcoming weeks.

So, since I have Toyo RA1s I guess I will be buying new tires.

Well I just signed up....

Road America is awesome. I ran it in One Lap of America in 1994 in the White car. Scared the crap out of me. When I made the 4 -5 shift at 130 MPH I knew I was moving.

Since then I learned a few things and logged a few track miles. My new car should be fast there. All I have to do now is pry it out of Joe and Paul VanNus’s hands and put it together. It is all painted and we are putting the chassis under it this weekend. It should be back at my shop by Feb. 14 (My girlfriend is trilled )

The engine should be done Feb 14 also. So I should be very busy the next couple months. But this car was built for Road America not autocrossing at Walmart. Lol

We should crush 150 MPH on the front and back straight.

If all goes right we will be there. Now what tires to use?

This is going to be a way cool event - we will be utilizing the 200 TW rule at the track and we will be doing a couple things to slow the cars down a little on the track for safety. We're not requiring roll cages and harnesses, so we feel this is absolutely necessary for safety.

This event just came together a little over a week ago - we should have all the forms, rules and registration docs, along with the website, up and going shortly.

Thanks for your patience!!

Tell me you are not running the motorcycle part before the kink... Although at any track day that seems to be the place almost everybody who gets in trouble does it.

I was thinking the same as Matt. I have no delusions of winning, no matter how many laps I have in there. I may want to run exhibition only on my RA1's if possible.

Do you mean the Ultimate Street Car Invitational at Spring Mountain? If so, that's an invitational. You need to be either invited or qualify by competing in a regional event like the Faceoff which takes place at Road America in the beginning of May.

Can I run the event with my R888's and bypass any awards?

The rules are posted at www.optimainvitational.com/faceoff

Tire rules - #11 - TIRES - Participants must use DOT approved, non-competition, treaded (non-grooved) street tires (no competition radials, no R compound, drag radials or shaved tread) with a tread wear rating of 200 or greater. Tires will be required to pass a technical inspection at the track. The spirit of the event requires the use of a DOT approved “non-competition” tire – any modifications to tires will be unacceptable. Any vehicle with tires showing any evidence of modification will be immediately disqualified from the event. Segments of the Faceoff will incorporate competitive elements that will make competition tires unsafe and uncompetitive. Safety is of the utmost importance and the race director or event coordinators will not hesitate to disqualify questionable tire selections.

All competitors in the event will be required to follow the same set of rules and there is no exhibition class for this event.

Hey crew, I've been asked to share a few more of the important details to let everyone know just how fun this event is going to be. Be patient with me as I'm going to run through all aspects of the event so everyone is clear as to how this thing is going to work (thanks for the suggestion Finchy!).

Although this is listed as a two day event, the fun actually begins on Friday April 30 with an open house and lunch at the Roadster Shop in Mundelein, IL. Be sure to stop by there on your way up. On Friday evening, we're going to assemble at Andrew Chevrolet on Silver Spring Drive for an informal cookout with burgers and hot dogs, bench racing and lying about how good all of our cars are! Hotel info for Friday night is listed on the event website. Andrew Chevrolet has graciously offered to let anyone keep their tow vehicles and trailers in their secured lot all weekend long.

Saturday morning starts the official event. We'll meet again at Andrew Chevrolet at 8 am for a breakfast sponsored by Pennzoil. We'll get all the cars lined up and ready for the road rally segment of the event. We'll do a drive by the OPTIMA headquarters heading for our first stop (mystery stop to be announced that morning). The cruise route will wind through the beautiful Wisconsin countryside to West Bend Dyno where they and D&Z Customs will provide you with a great lunch. Our final stop will be the famous track at Road America where we will park all the cars and have them teched while we watch James Shipka and his fellow One Lap of America competitors tear it up on the track. The Roadster Shop Performance Design competition will take place on Saturday afternoon as well. This will be a participant judged event with a special award from the Roadster Shop. Basically, you vote for your favorite vehicle in the event (except your own), and the vehicle with the most votes wins.

At 4:00 on Saturday, the high-speed competition begins with the Carbon Kustoms Karting Enduro, a one hour team endurance go-karting event. All competitors and non-driving competitors will be included. This is meant to be a social event, so we will throw everyone's name into a hat and draw out four person teams. Once the teams are established, we will then have all four members of the team gather on the karting scale to determine the starting grid! The heaviest team will start on the pole and the lightest team will start at the back of the pack! This should make for a great icebreaker and some good natured fun. Saturday night concludes with appetizers and bench racing at Siebkins Stop-Inn, a world famous tavern that has hosted every famous racer in history since the 50's. If you know any racers by name, I can practically guarantee you that they've been to Siebkins Stop-Inn. Be sure to bring your favorite racing sticker as the entire establishment is decorated with thousands of them.

The Sibkins Hotel offers some great rooms with great rates, be sure and book quickly, info is on the website. http://www.siebkens.com/

The on track competition starts on Sunday with a 7am drivers meeting. Breakfast food is available from the famous Gearbox restaurant at the track. We'll shoot to have cars on the track by 8am. The BFG Hot Lap Challenge will be on the famous track with a custom configuration specifically designed for our event. http://roadamerica.com/FanInformation/Maps.asp

The DSE Speed Attack Autocross will be held at the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex, and is sure to be one of the most unique and entertaining autocross tracks you'll ever see. This is not a parking lot or skid pad, but a mini road course with rumble strips and elevation changes! http://roadamerica.com/userfiles/image/information_maps/map_motorplex_580w.jpg

The Baer Brakes Speed Stop Challenge will be a true 0-100-0 competition on the most famous front straight in racing!

A couple things to keep in mind - this event is a BFG contingency event, so all of you running BFG's, be sure to sign up at BFG's Nation of Go. BFG has stepped up big and is paying out cash for participants running their product. Brian Finch earned valuable points and $350 at RTTC! http://www.nationofgo.com/#/explore

Lastly, this is an OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car qualifying event. We will be offering two, yes two, invitations to the Ultimate Street Car Invitational in Pahrump, NV right after SEMA!!

We're limiting the event to 60 entries and they're filling up fast. Don't miss out on the chance to be part of the inaugural group to run at Road America and earn your chance to compete with the elite at the OUSCI in 2010. This will truly be one of the most memorable events of the year!

Additional incentive from Bret at Ridetech:

"Hi guys…just now getting a chance to write a few thoughts. As we discussed briefly on Sunday, I would like to set up an offer to store up to 6 participants cars at our facility between the Face Off event on May 1 and the MMC event on May 30 for those who would enter both events. We could even extend that a bit further if they wanted to stay for the Power Tour and/or the Motorstate event in June. Here is a schedule of events in the area that might be of interest for this type vehicle/owner:

April 30-May 2 – Face Off at Road America – 7 hours from Jasper
May 8-9 – 10/10ths track day at Putnam Park – 2 hours from Jasper http://www.1010thsmotorsports.com/page/page/5236308.htm
May 21-23 GoodGuys Nashville – 3 hours from Jasper
May 29-30 Midwest Musclecar Challenge – 1 hour from Jasper
June 5-12 HotRod Power Tour – Iowa to Alabama
June 18-20 Motorstate Challenge – 5 hours from Jasper
July 9-11 Goodguys Columbus – 5 hours from Jasper

We are 75 miles from the Louisville airport. If the flights are coordinated I can even arrange a group ride from the airport to our shop."

A way generous offer guys - don't miss out, no excuses about storage now!! Thanks for the offer Bret.

I had a very hard week getting my car ready, and I almost gave up missed saturday and just made it on sunday! I just have my shop clean enough to work and its almost 2pm, to say the least my tool box exploded all over my shop. I am so happy I made it and with a car that I really did'nt think even belonged there due to my Cuda heading to Mecum this month and my Camaro in the corner not ready for anything. So last week I had the idea to break out the credit card and buy some minimal parts to take my 78 gold edition y88 car out of the corner and get it out on the track, I've owned the car since I was 16 and its probably the coolest piece of my history that I have I really cant believe the car or me made it out of high school alive. So back to the story I just made it and got sent right to the autox and lets just say I needed some more go juice to get this thing around the corner, and if you seen me at the brake challenge I looked more like a stunt driver than a race car driver, but the car did very well on the road coarse in the back straight I actually had the speedo bouncing off the peg! After lunch I headed back to the autox and ran a ton of laps I beat the car so hard I broke the 2 front seat brackets off then headed back to the road track and had an absolute blast. So everythings done and their handing out all of the awards and imagine that I did'nt win a thing (not that I expected to) but they got to the last thing the overall winner who gets a spot at the optima ultimate street car invitational and just before they announced the winner they said that they would be handing out 2 instead of just one and they gave the 2nd spot to little old me with a old mostely stock trans am I almost fainted! So the jist of this long post (sorry) is get your butt's out there and have fun it does'nt matter what you have or if you think you or your car wont impress anyone trust me I built plenty of cooler cars than this but it just goes to show if you get out there and beat your car into the dirt and smile while doing it someone just might send you to Vegas Baby!!!!!!!!! I would like to thank Jimi and Cam and everybody else that had anything to do with this event. Telly Violetto

Thanks Finch your cars are awsome and you can surely get them around the track, For the offer on the road trip I'll probably have to tow it out there so why spend all that money on pulling it out there when I car just drive the car? So if the wife lets me (she'll be 8 month's along with our 2nd child) I'm in! Now I just have to figure out my game plan to make that car more competitive. Telly

Randy,

Thank you for stepping up and helping out on this event, the lunch was excellent and really added to the weekend. It is a big commitment for the smaller shops to step up in this way so more proof that you get it and see where this stuff is going. I am working hard to get to where you are as I can see you are enjoying what you're doing.

Thanks again and see you at the next one,

Hi Brian, I think you already are there, your cars that you build are top notch show quality, & perform like race cars. You are setting a bench mark for others to try & reach.

See Ya at Putnam.
