Reactor is lot 1287.

I hope it brings more than Copperback. I've seen Reactor in person but not Copperback. From pictures it looks like they stepped it up a couple notches with Reactor IMO. Plus the owners live near me and I'd like to see them continue to build these kind of vehicles. They also had a 37 Ford (lot 1252) that went accross earlier...

I would be feeling sick! It sold for $230 with commish he is down to $211 and then a couple thousand for transportation and registering then spending a week in Scottsdale. I am sure there is $350 or so in this car, a $140 or 50 thousand dollar lost to me would really ruin your night. I know Doug has tried to sell it outside of Barrett, so I guess this is the only place he was able to get that kind of money. Someone got a great car for a good price!

See.. I don't get why people think these cars are investments.. they SHOULD lose money. It's a hobby, you build it drive it, beat it and then sell it for less than you have in it. Makes sense to me.

Keep in mind that Reactor was built years ago and has already sucked up the spotlight. If it was fresh and unshown it might have brought in more $$$$.

This is a hobby, not a 401k deal. lol

Steve -- That's it right on the head - it's a HOBBY -- you build a car - and maybe you get half what you put in -- not TWICE.... Welcome to coming back to NORMAL. Cars aren't DOWN - they're just being sold for what they're really worth.

BTW -- the LAKESIDE car was a car called TIMELESS and it's a 35 FORD (not a 37) ... and an absolutely wonderful one at that!

To me this is a hobby and I have lost my fair share of money on cars thru the years. Would I have done it any other way probably not.
I love cars always have always will. If someone can afford to put $350K into building a car then they can probably also afford loosing $150-200K when they sell it.
If someone thinks that just because they get their car on the auction rooster at BJ that they should make money I think they need to think again.

The 35 Ford (Timeless) went really cheap. That is a baddass car for only $130K.

Greg said it right, normal cars are bringing proper money.

What surprises me the most ids the Corvette adjustment seems brutal, worse then the Mopar adjustment last year. Big Block Mid Year Vettes were in the $60K to $80K range, WAY down!

My thoughts exactly. But I feel like if a guy were to home build a badass car such as a Mustang or a Camaro and say only have 35 to 45 thousand in it he should be able to carry it to BJ and make some coin. High dollar shop built cars like this one, I can see not getting back 100% of the money invested and I know the owner didnt have the car built to make money on it.

Exactly! BJ is in the prime position, it never matters what the car cost to build or what it sells for, they make the cash either way. And Speed for whoring themselves out to all of the advertisers of course. These commercials are killing the whole thing for me.

DVR= Record, come back later and shave 4 hours off by skipping the ads.

Making a profit on a " badass " car is easier said than done. I have always justified spending money, and I can be cheap, tying it up. If I can come close to breaking even when it sells, then I'm happy.

Scott --- Well said. I'm thinking that this might be the last year I watch any of it on TV... it's become boring. Way too many commercials.... and frankly - a LOT of erroneous information.

There was no - none - zip - "buzz" this year at BJ... I'm not sure if the weather played a part in that or not. And here's another observation. 2 years ago - I wanted to buy some pieces of the stuff that a couple outfits do - restored old gas pumps - and misc shop pieces. They're top notch - and they get top notch prices. Most of them where sold on the FIRST DAY of BJ... so I was out of luck on a couple things I would have bought.

THIS YEAR --- I'm looking at the stuff SATURDAY afternoon - and very little was tagged SOLD.... most of it's going to go home with the vendor.

HUGE DIFFERENCE.... just HUGE. Ditto most of the "art". In years past - you had to be pretty fast and not drool too long or the piece you wanted was gone... this year - you could still buy all of it - anything you wanted - and barter on the price too!

Having attended BJ and RS for the past 4 years start to finish...I can tell you that attendance was definitely down. We went to Pavillions on Saturday about noon...then headed over to BJ at about 2pm.

Last year at 2pm...there wasn't a parking place to be had anywhere near BJ (even if you had a parking pass like I did)...

This year, when I left at 5:30pm on Saturday night, there were still public parking spaces available right across from the main tent...and there were still seats available in the bidders area (not so last year...or the years prior).

Was it the weather...the economy...or a bit of both?

Yeah, Barrett is the only game in town. 95% of what you see at the NO RESERVE auctions is bogus or shill bidding. That is why you often see cars bid to a bid and sell later for much less. I have run cars though reserve auctions and there are bids, bids, bids, and I am on stage watching, and I'll be damned if I see them.

We never shill bid our stuff, don't have to. All you need to do is tell the auctioneer not to let it die on the stage, and they will run it close to what you want and let it eat.

If you want to sell the car, you take it to Barrett. It may not bring what you hope it will bring, but you will sell it.

Well said Bruce -- Everyone should have this on their "bucket list" -- it is a hoot and there really is only "one" like it. It's bigger than big... and besides you get to do my favorite car thing - MEET UP WITH YOUR BUDDIES!

While I think the prices were "low to middlin" - I agree with Frank when he says if you want to sell your car - this is the place to be. There are real buyers - and the cars get sold. Frankly -- (not Frank) -- everybody talks about what something or other is "worth" -- and an auction like this tells you EXACTLY what it's worth... whatever two other guys are willing to pay for it. It's not worth a nickel more. There are lots and lots of "venues" to sell cars -- and the really high dollar builds are well known and well documented - and generally the "world" knows when they're for sale and what the seller is asking.... and the only way they finally make it to BJ or RM etc is because nobody was willing to step up and buy them for what the seller was asking. That doesn't mean that someone might pay MORE than that at an auction - but if they do you're just LUCKY!

On the plane home - I pulled out Hot Rod magazine - noticed that a previous HUGE buyer at BJ et al - was forced to sell most all of his 210 car collection - and the one they showed came to mind - a Chevelle - X race car - 61 miles on it - all 1/4 at a time - he had bought at BJ in 2006 -- 1.2 MILLION -- sold at a Peterson auction for 240 thousand.... you all know - that the 240 thousand was way more than any of us would have paid for it... so that was what it was really worth. El Stupido that paid 1.2 million for it... Oh well....

Made me think of the GM BUS - that sold for 4 million - Let's take a guess what that was/is really "worth" today.

BTW -- I fully understand that most can not go to these events - vacation time - cost - whatever... and this is only the second time I've ever gone.. ditto SEMA... so I'm just poking people when I say "I was there in person".... because I normally am hunkered around the tube at home drooling and wishin'. BUT DO put it on your to do list -- you really would like it. Oh - and bring a d#*n rain coat and boots!!!
