Painting Glass

Tony, Not sure if this is the correct area But, is it possible to paint glass? Got my winshield installed today and you can see a little of the urethane in the bottom close to the dash. I was thinking about painting a black trim like the modern vehicles are.

Yup, half of the detailing process at work involves scraping paint of glass. :willy:

There's actually a "dye" type paint that should be applied to black out the edge -- ala modern cars... I have clue what it's called -- but watched a guy do this with what looked like an old fashioned liquid shoe polish "dauber"... guy went around the edge in about an inch and bingo - it was blacked out.

Yep, as others have said, it can be done. I was there when our auto glass guy was installing our Camaro windshield, and he did it so quickly that I looked away and he was done. I think he did the same thing Greg described. Sounds familiar. I can ask how he does it though. Oh and if you haven't figured out where to put the vin tag, we mounted it on the edge of the Marquez dash and scraped out a little window for it, so it looks just like late model cars.

Yesh but isnt that stuff on the inside? Dont you have to do it before the window goes in?

Seems like it would be hard to do with the glass already installed and have it look nice and even etc

Yea that's right greg, but I may have to do it on the out side. I'm not real happy about the a few things so at some point the glas may come back out anyway. The header chrome fit terible and the moldings gave us a fit. Funning thing is , it's all original header crome that I had sent out and re-cromed. But it was so thick they had to grind it down and do it over. Once that happened the metal got so distorted it sat to high. I'm going to look at some other Camaro's to compare but knowing me it will come out at some point.

Oh,they offered to take it back out and fix it The glass guys were great. I just had the impression that these old car were perfect. It's my fault the because I should have used the new dash as a guide. but after I got the lower mold up close to the glass it dosent look to bad. Now I just got to get the molding to fit right. On a dead line for interior, so worst case I fix it when it comes back.

As you can probably tell, after putting in the dash, window doesn't even need to be as big as ours is.

Hope that helps you towards a decision on vin placement.

Another option would be to use window tinting or vinyl on the inside or outside, to get that modern look with a black border or design around the edge of the windshield

On our windshields we use the black windshield primer on the backside after masking off wth fineline tape. Its best to mark the original glass before removing so that you know the best "lines" on the new one. Works great and one of those subtle things that make the difference.
