Its been a while since we have posted any of our latest projects so here is one we are really excited about. Gerry Kerna is one of our long time customers who we built a 1941 Willys for a few years back. Gerry came to us this time wanting to build a car that SHE (yes I said she  ) could compete with in the Goodguys autocross and other road racing events. She always wanted an early Chevy II so the search began. We found an all original 1962 Chevy II that we quickly picked up and brought back to the shop to go under the knife. With performance and handling being one of the top priorities of this build we called our friends at The Roadster Shop to have a custom chassis built. We told them we wanted to run a 335/30/18 in the rear and a 275/35/18 up front and they quickly went to work. The car was torn apart media blasted and mounted to the frame table to be cut apart. Once the body was mounted to the chassis it was time for the sheet metal work to begin. The floors, trans tunnel firewall and wheel tubs were fabbed up,installed and it was time to pull it off to table and set it on the earth for the first time to get a look at its killer stance. We massaged the bumpers so they fit tight to the body and are currently building the roll cage. Power will come from a 416 cube Mast Motorsports LS3 that at this time is making 600 Hp. We are very anxious to have this car out this year tearing up the autocross tracks and competing at the Optima Street Challenge. Stay tuned for more pics and info as we go..

upper control arm looks very short probably based off a mustang II design if I had to guess. And a 4 link rear.

Were the rear wheel openings moved rearward to retain the quarter windows? Whats the rocker hieght front and rear and desired ride hieght?

The front is based off a Mustang II, Heidts made the front, The control arms are about 8.25" from the center of the ball joint to the center of the rod-end with adjustments both ways, 4 link rear, Speedway style front and rear swaybars Rocker height is about 3.75 behind the front wheel and about 4 in front of the rear tire. The quarter glass took a little work. But we got them to work perfect. We notched the tubs just a pinch and reworked the tracks slightly and it all worked out. It was nice to work that out while the tubs could still be removed. But the opening remain in the stock location. Travis do you still have the dually?

Come on Curt, WTF, you are better than that! I wouldn't sell you a Mustang II.

This is our latest Nova Chassis. The front uses a modified Heidt's Pro-G. The rear is our 4-bar set up with a 9".

That's an interesting frame setup - in a good way. When I looked at your site I didn't realize that the picture you show for the Chevy II frame is one of your Chevelle Frames (right?). I just glanced at it and saw that it used C5/6 spindles/uprights and assumed that would be the case on the Nova frame. Not that there is anything wrong with any other setup, just an observation and assumption that I made that was incorrect.

Very cool build - I'll be following this one!

This may be a little off-topic, but what do you guys do with the VIN plate on the firewall? I see a few Novas being done but the VIN plate never gets put back on the firewall. What happens when it gets registered?

Boy..... I didn't realize I could get in so much trouble on here. One mistake and everyone is on my butt!!!! And the bad thing is that I knew what it was. That is what happens with 14 employee, 10 projects, 3 kids and twins on the way. I finally think I may be loosing my mind. We do have some mustang II spindles on Ebay. I guess I could always say the damn chassis builders didn't give me a clue on what I got from them!!! SORRY it will not happen again.

On this car the VIN is located in the front of drivers door jamb between the hinges.. Other cars we just try and get it close to where is was originally located.

Thanks Heidts, Glad not to be in trouble with you, now I just have to work on Phil but that will be a uphill battle. One question for you? On the Speedway swaybar we noticed yesterday that it had rubber bushings as in the past they were copper or delrin. Is there an advantage or disadvantage to that?

Travis where at you at with your project? Are you putting a chassis under it?
I almost felt it was a no brainer once I started weighting the pros and cons.

CRCRFT78

Ok I'm aware of the vin tag on the drivers door jam, what I'm asking (had I said it correctly) is what do you do with the trim tag that is on the firewall? Does it become a non issue for builds of this caliber?

The trim tags is removed but the VIN tag is the one that has to be their if it to be driven on the street.you have to have it to cross STATE LINE.

With all of the killer work on this car, everyone is concerned with the VIN tag?? Really??? When was the last time anyone got pulled over and then had to pop the hood to inspect the VIN/trim tag? (That was a rhetorical question. Please do not hi-jack this thread with examples to prove me wrong!:D )

Should be urethane not rubber. We are looking into delrin. The delrin will be more responsive than the urethane, but alittle more noisy (big deal) Urethane helps with the vibration causing less noise.

We are sure that this car didn't have a trim tag... I hope I don't go to jail over this. I don't know if they even had trim tags in 62. I guess I'm on Phil's good side again!!!!!:hail:

(That was a rhetorical question. I will not remove a vin number from a car not here in texas. For the one was a bill of sale they still have the car and I had to replaced the custom car
and the do all the work he paid for.All I had to do it was not stolen impossible with no VIN. and they knew this. The car will be destroy.

Well I'm going to post more pictures later tonight about the car and Maybe I'll start a post in open discussion about vin tags!!!! I started to bag the vin tags and trim tags for the cars we work on and safety wire tie them to the interior quarter panel so they stay with the car. I hope we can end this on this post and move it to where it needs to be. And you can call me out anytime you want on anything we do. I understand we all have different ideas and visions and sometimes that helps. Thanks Guys

First of all - Awesome build! I can't wait to see this car at some of the shows.

I have a question related to the front "downtube" (I guess that's what I'd call it) seen in this pic. Is there going to be something else tied into it or am I missing something in this view? It just seems like that might be a weak point with that sweeping bend going to the floor/frame.

http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/attachment.php4?attachmentid=22093&d=1262751322

Quite possibly there is more to be added, so if so I'll stay posted for the updates. Thanks,

If I am thinking of the same tube as you are, it will have the door bar added to it. We just don't put them in at this point so they are not in the way. I am also up in the air about running it threw the firewall and out the front. But we have so much stuff under the dash it will really be in the way but I would still like to do it. Its just hard sometimes to draw the line on where to stop.

Yes, It is one. All of our cars up until this point have been built with the body coming off the chassis. On this car, weight and cost were taken into mind when making the decision to be one. Plus the car was kind of that way to start.

Well anytime you put a chassis under a car you have options. We put new floors in the car front to back so we could go either way. We didn't use one stock thing under this car. So its not like we just could keep what was there. If I was building an all out show car I would make the chassis separate from the body. Detail, Detail, Detail.

Yea that's going to be one badass 62 Nova. keep the pictures and updates coming. It gives me inspiration on finishing my 66.

One question on the hinges? We tried to use stock on my 66 but they hit the tires because of the cars ride height. You don't have a clearance issue with the tires? Again very nice build!

What are you guys using to smooth out the welds? They have a bronze-ish color? Just curious if you are using some sort of a metallic filler or something after they are welded and ground to give them that extra smooth look.

Thanks

We used a silicon bronze rod to weld that area with... It is easier to grind and finish...

Time for a few updates... We worked with the Ring Brothers to come up with a one off set of hinges for this car.. They work and look great!! We also finished the belly pans under the rear of the car between the quarters and the fuel tank.. We also are making a chin spoiler for under the front bumper, raised sheetmetal floor mat panels that will sit flush with the rug and will have a non slip type of material inserted and lastly installed the fuel filler cap in the top of the quarter panel..

Wanted to post some updated pics... Here are the center consoles we made for the car.. THe front houses the start/stop button, Vintage Air controls and the brake bais knob..

We cut apart the front fenders and moved the wheel opening forward an inch for greater tire clearance...

Stay tuned for more updates!!

UPDATES!!!! Sorry I have not updated this is quite some time.. The car has gotten a lot of attention from a few performance manufacturers who have seen it and are currently showing us a few cutting edge products that have been worth slowing the build down... Its very exciting and all coming together.. We are in Ft Worth Texas for the Goodguys show right now but I will post some new pics when I get back to the shop... Stay tuned!! That's a really good idea, I will take your name change idea into consideration. But since we are on the subject of names, where did the name RPM come from? Obviously everyone knows RPM means Rev's per Minute but I'm beginning to think Re - Paint the Mustang makes alot more sense. :D :D :D

Actually just shy of 5 years. We could also subtract 1 year for Kenny's boo boo which was a pretty ligit reason to put the project on hold.

I did drive the truck Pro-Fair Grounds at Columbus. I think I saw you driving your truck there to the year before.

More important - it's not just a mini-truck it was theee Mini-Truck that all other mini-trucks will strive to be. I dare you to find another idiot like me that would spend that kind of money on a mini-truck. I am certain you will have hard time.

ps - now the 70 Camaro project that should be a Columbus or Sema next year that is if all goes well. But I never really set a time limit on the build. I just enjoy the build part more then I do washing and cleaning them.

Did yall have to take the a/c compressor apart to get it powder coated?

I wouldn't call Gerry your average woman! Her blood has more lube and fuel in it than most guys I know! Spent a bit talking to her this past year at the Convention center. There should be more women out there like her.

You are correct! She is the greatest! She knows every detail about her cars..

With Columbus a week away the "Runt" is really coming together.. We received the CTS-V fuel pump today and are finishing the fab work on the fuel tank. We are using the Vapor Worx set up because of its proven reliability.. Once the tank is completed and bolted back in the car it will be time to hear it run...

Your right... I'm sorry... Here are the pictures you have all been waiting for.. Normally we use Dynamat in all of our builds but on this car we gave Hush mat a try, here is an action shot of our P.G. look alike laying in down.. We removed the coil packs from the valve covers and made mounts to install them in the trans tunnel area.. We decided to fabricate an aluminum sub box for this car, here is a pic of it completed and ready to install..

Is that better RS-Perf? I hope so..

One week to go!

Well we made it to Columbus at 5 am Thursday morning.. Thursday night we decided if this car was going to compete for SMOTY it better be capable of taking A beating... After cruising around the fairgrounds we found a large empty parking lot and it was on! The car is unreal to drive! After feeling good about the thrashing we decided to drive it to the host hotel, again awesome for being fresh out of the box.. Curt ran a 33.6 on the autocross but had taken out 1 cone .. With a little tweaking this car is gonna be incredible! We received a top 5 pick which was awesome but what was even better than that is between burnouts and drift sessions we put over 200 miles on the car over the weekend and had a blast doing it.. The car sat outside at night and took us to dinner everynight.. She's no trailer queen show car!! Pics to come soon!

That's a true street machine. If you ask me I feel doing a 34sec or better should be part of SMOY :unibrow:

I have a 1st gen and have been getting design inspiration form your build for a year now. I just hoping you will bring it to Del Mar.

Do you have a video of it on the Autocross?

Fritz,

Great seeing you guys this weekend. I was really impressed with the car and how it performed. I knew Curt nailed a 33, but did not know about the cone. They didn't announce that over the PA. The Runt was my pick for SMOY. It all comes down to personal taste and this was closest to mine. The best part was seeing Gerry (sp?) driving it in the winners parade on Sunday. She was grinning from ear to ear and looked perfect in the car. Job well done!

Here are some pics for the guys who couldn't make it to Columbus.. They were taken with the shop camera so forgive the quality.. Better ones coming soon! Here is the engine compartment.. We flat cleared a repeating R pattern on the inset parts of the panels.. It is a woman's car so think Coach purse pattern but we used the RPM R... Thanks to Brandy at Spectre for helping out with the air intake..

Last night we rented the skid pad at Beaverun, our local track to do a little testing.. Josh drove the Runt out, I drove the Camaro out and Curt took the Hauler so we had tools and an air compressor if needed.. Once there we all took turns driving and comparing both cars.. After tweaking the set up on the Runt a little the car really felt awesome.. The car is very easy to drive! Here are some pics..

That car is wicked. The stance is nasty. I Love the colors and the pattern painted in. That is pretty damn cool.
In what seems to be an era of cnc'd half million dollar cars, this "appears" to be something more down to earth, but totally bada$$ at the same time.

I know I'll look like a dic$ for even saying it, but the one gig to me is the color difference of the doors from being painted blown apart. But I suck at painting so what do I know.
