View Full Version : offered Sunday "primetime" lot # @ Scottsdale Barrett Jackson in January

Okay guys, with much sadness I submitted my application to BJ for the January auction in Scottsdale a few weeks just to see what lot # and time slot they would offer me. I have been intrigued by this whole experience since I started watching it every year on Speed channel. It is nothing short of pure gambling, but what a rush it must be for both buyer and (especially) seller.
I am still hoping to keep my Camaro but with the economy the way it is, my 2 businesses are not performing as well as I would like, and our beloved muscle cars are usually the first thing to go. So I am trying to stay ahead of the ball. But I have to decide by next week (Monday) if I want the lot # or not. The offered lot # is 1570 and is scheduled for between 12 and 4pm Sunday (Speed channel live coverage).
I calculate I have more potential upside than downside based on what I think my car would bring on the open market or on ebay. If I accept this lot #, it also gives me 2 months to still enjoy the car, and being in NorCal the weather is still fine to drive.
This is a tough call and I am not really ready to make the decision but Monday is my deadline as of now. :_paranoid

Sorry to hear you must sell. But think that a prime selling time might bring more money than trying it on ebay .But thats easy to say not easy watching it go on a no reserve auction instead.Best of luck with what you do. Joe :)

There is no such thing as Sunday Prime Time. Everyone I know flys home Sunday. Once they blow their wad Saturday night, it is over. Friday and Satuday late afternoon / early evening, that is prime time

As the previous post mentions, Sunday is not that good of a day for BJ as most people are heading home on that day. The 'demand' drops on that day, and it's all about demand at that place(and a little luck). As far as I can tell, the hype of BJ is over in terms of fetching big or even solid prices for cars there. I would shoot for Ebay. I still see cars selling at fairly solid prices there. With a well-written auction description and some really good photos, you might do well there. Whichever way you go, I hope you get a solid price for your ride.

What he said.. Sunday is the worst day.. by then all the rollers are done or gone.. you're only left with the bargain hunters.

Contact Chris Moe, he's looking for a car. Sounds like a suicide mission to me. Tell them you want a better spot or you're not coming.

Evryone I know that sells cars, said Hot Rod Hot line was the place to advertise. You might do Ebay and HotRodHotline.

Dave,
don't do Sunday my friend, for all the reasons above. If they can get you in Friday or Saturday, or anytime other than Sunday...............

Thanks guys. This is what I was thinking too but wanted to hear from the masses. Of course they call it "primetime" on Sunday simply because Speed channel coverage is for 4 hours that day. I was hoping for a Fri or Sat night spot.
Well, actually I was hoping for a Wed 12 noon spot so it would be easy to immediately say NO THANKS! ;)
Thanks for all the input guys.
Have a safe Turkey Day wherever you all are!

Dave, it looks like all the signs are pointing towards "Don't do it" at the moment. I would certainly follow up on the other leads in terms of where to sell. Don't invest more money that won't profit you.

I agree, don't give away your car for an adrenalin rush. I have the Chevelle for sale & am looking at using Ebay & Hot Rod Hot Line, also Cars-On-line. Good Luck on your sale.:lateral:

It is going to be hard to get a Friday or Saturday prime time spot. The auction has a lot of heavy duty stuff rolling through. My friend that runs a lot of cars there submitted 30 cars and had what I thought was at least 4 Saturday Prime timers, 4 more Friday Primetimers and the rest at least Thursdays. They gave him 8 Fridays and the rest were Tuesday / Weds. And this is someone that runs a lot of cars, ran our for us. If he cannot get smokin numbers, it will be hard to improve your Sunday number being mister new guy with one car.
But as stated, Thursday, Friday, Saturday (no way) or no go! However IF you could get Thursday / Friday, I am 100% convinced you WILL get the maximum amount the car is worth. Weather that number is what you want, that may be different, but you will get what it is worth.

Not sure yet... you know someone who might be interested? Or just curious?

I have talked to Chris and my car has a couple things that DQ me. :D
Thanks for all the great advice and info guys, especially on Thanksgiving! :)
Frank, I was hoping you would see this and chime in as I know you just went thru this in Vegas. Thanks for the words, and I agree with you if I got a good slot I would not be giving the car away.
I'll ask them Monday for a REAL primetime slot, and see what they say. I will probably say no and just ebay it and put it up on the mentioned sites (thanks for the Hot Rod Hotline tip - did not know of that one) when I am ready.
Darnit, I am full. :D

Dave --
A couple of things about auctions -- and these no reserve auctions are not for the faint of heart... and while a few get lucky and get their asking and then some - many more are giving cars away.
A couple of things you might think about == Some guys have "slots" that could be "had".... depending on whether or not you're really serious about selling your car... The other is - that unless there are at least TWO or more people wanting your car - even if a guy was willing to pay more... if nobody is bidding against him - he can't get the price up by himself (you can't bid against yourself after all)... The pros have "friends" - they'll 'bump' a guy... or if they're big time sellers and buyers - the auction will toss in a "phantom bid". Don't be fooled -- to these folks - you're a nobody - and they're not there to help you out. If you're a regular - they know what you "need" for a car - and will "work" to get it there.
We can talk via PM / Email if you want...
DO NOT run a car on SUNDAY or THURSDAY either.... and if you want my humble opinion - this is most likely NOT the year to be taking a chance on a no reserve auction unless you know how they work.

Greg, I think you meant to call me Dave vs Skip. I think you know us both on here. :D
I may sound like I am clueless sometimes but I am aware of the game played at BJ and am very prepared to be a player and not get played if the time slot is acceptable. Let's just leave it at that for now. ;)
I will PM you Greg.

Thanks and that sucks what happened to you. But I have not signed anything that locks me in to anything. I would never have signed anything without an offered time slot.
I am pretty certain I will be saying no them next week when they say no we cannot move you to Fri or Sat primetime.

Okay so I emailed my Barrett Jackson rep back tonite and told him thanks but no thanks unless I can get a primetime Fri or Sat lot #.
I even pointed out this "pro-touring" 69 Camaro that is on their Friday lineup. Not talking trash at all, but it's a carbed stroker big block (looks nice), M-22 trans (really?), and leaf springs with no mini-tub. I told them to switch this car to Sunday and give me his Friday time slot. I'm sure that will go over well. This is probably one of those cars where the seller is a dealer/seller is a repeat BJ customer and is getting some preferential treatment. That's my guess.

I disagree a bit about market strentgh. Vegas was strong, Camaros brought 50% more then they were worth. Part of the reason your not getting primetime numbers is lots of people rushing to get in because of Vegas numbers. The cars selling at Vegas for $100K we $60K car on their best days!
My phone has been very busy with car inquiries, people looking for cars. And this morning there are 5 inquiries for builds for the shop. The market is stronger then ya think but it is narrow. E bay, I think the shine has come off E Bay a bit

I go to BJ Scottsdale every year and Russo & Steele. R&S is a smaller auction with a mix of cars from drivers to exotics. Their fees are more reasonable and you might get a better deal there (than Sunday at BJ).
Wouldn't hurt to check.

Before you go to any auction you need to have a # in your head that you will take not what you think it will sell for. Because once you get there you'll have every Tom, Dick and Harry telling you the car is worth way more. Don't get sucked into that and stick to your original amount. Your expectations will be much more justified when you leave. Of course you can get lucky and have 2 or more people wanting the car and it can go north in a hurry. But for the most part all the buyers there are very educated and know how much money was spent to put the car together.

Made that mistake as well. You just can't beat the shear number of "buyers" at Barrett's. Russo, Mecum, R&M, etc just don't compare.

I'll bet there are more cars sold on Saturday at Russo than Sunday at BJ. Sunday at BJ is a very bad time to sell a car. That's my point, I would see if I could get an auction on Sturday at Russo before I would try to sell at BJ on Sunday. Most cars at Russo are on reserve anyway, so if you don't get your price, you don't sell.
There may be fewer buyers at R&M but they have 10x the money that BJ bidders have :wow:

Since I've sold cars at both my opinion would be to stay with Barrett's. I wouldn't take a Sunday spot, but a Thursday spot is better than a Russo spot even if it's Russo's primetime.

Frank, I didn't mean to imply market strength is weak, esp not for Camaros. I just meant if that Camaro is Fri material, I respectfully think I am Fri material too based on the mods for that car.
The one thing that has sold well and continues to sell well at these BJ auctions are the customs, and many "pro touring" Camaros have done very well while some of the other cars, namely low mile "collector" cars with pedigree, have not done as well as in recent years. I record and watch every hour of Speed Channel coverage for these events and do the extra research on the details online, so I am not just completely throwing darts here. But as Greg and many of you have said, playing the game how you need to play is paramount to any chance of success, esp as a first timer and non-dealer/friend of the Jackson/Davis clan....

I have my numbers, just not sharing them here... for some obvious reasons. :)
