I am often baffled at the tire choices some people make, and I wonder if it is just lack of experience.
If you are making anywhere near 500 hp /500 lb. ft. at the wheels there is no ultra -perfomance (utg 220) summer tire that is going to contain that power, and you will never get a decent launch (i.e 0-60 1/4 mile time) no matter how wide they are.
You need to go straight to the r-compound tires: think nitto nt-01, toyo r888, or Yokohama Advan A048.
At a minimum the Dunlop Direzza star spec, Brigestone re-11 of yokohama Ad08 (new).
I had the bf goodrich g-force kd 275/40 18's and with only 445/lb ft. at the wheels, hopeless traction. Look at the super snake in this months motor trend. It is making a bona fide 635hp at the wheels and they put 285/35/20's pirelli p zeros on it. It is slower than a stock gt-500!!
Get the stickiest rubber you can afford. worth more than 100 extra hp!!!

I don't know.. my PS2s (220 treadwear) launch pretty good.. I think I got .94g on the launch.
The R888s were better (1.01g) and the A6s were best (1.19g).
Then again, how hard can you legally launch on the street?

I will second that Sticky tires are nice, but you need to weigh the price of a exhibition of speed ticket and tire wear. I would like to go sticker on the goat but it doesn't make sense if the tires are only going to last me 3000 miles. be honest with yourself Do you really take your pro touring car out there and treat it like a sport bike? Didn't think so, so yes its nice to be able to use the car to its fullest but there comes a point of when money comes into consideration and common sense. It may not make sense to some but, it has kept me out of trouble on the street. BTW if you want to hook in a straight line adjust the rear suspension accordingly and get some drag radials.
A. cost of the tires
B cost of a ticket
C cost of repairing the car if you hook and break something
D cost of wrecking the car
This is all consequences on the street though
If your using the car on a track or have a different set of wheels you will be using these tires on disregard most of this.
Just my two cent on the whole matter.

couple more points here boys,
ps2's are pretty sticky, and to be fair you are running a 335 vs. 275 and 397 ft. lbs vs. 445 ft. lbs. Never mind launch, the bfg kd's would spin at 4,000 in 3rd.
as for tire wear, really who cares? every car here pretty much has 80k+ in it so these are not budget minded builds. If you got 8,000 miles on a set of r888's that is probably 3 years of driving, and by then they are old anyway. Rain? yeah only if you got caught in it!
I guess its more of a power to tire thing. There is no point in going beyond 450 rwhp without r-compounds because you will never get it to the ground.
And if we are talking tickets and being all street legal, then you better stop at 300 hp, so you are not tempted.
breakage is a legitimate concern, then again maybe scaling back the power is a better idea??

"sticky" tires like the R888, RA1, NTO1 and such should give you 10,000 miles unless you're just doing burnouts from point A to point B.. lol
That's still a lot less than a KDW or PS2.. but how many miles a year do you drive?
I don't get it.... are you trying to explain it to us, or looking for an explanation. Fortunately, my car doesn't have enough power to spin the tires, so I have nothing to worry about. :D

My r888's will probably last just as long at the pilot sports I have on my second set of wheels. Those babies spin so much they're bound to run out of tread just as fast. I can hook 497 flbs at 3800 in first gear on a clean desert road. Not so lucky around town or in a dirty autocross track. It really hooks on the road course.

Traction in a straight line is much more than just tires so not sure where this is going. I put 482/475 to the ground in my 67 Mustang with 285 KDW rears and as long as I am above 15 MPH I can stand on it in any gear and it will bite.
