I've done both -- you can not beat the GNRS --

Tip -- Go on FRIDAY first thing - if you go into the NHRA museum - you can go through that - which is cool on it's own - and buy your GNRS ticket there - walk out the back door when it opens - 11:00 I think on Friday - and go right into the show area.

SATURDAY you can't see a thing -- it's so dang crowded it's not worth it (to me at least).

thanks for the info and the tip. appreciate it. looks like if i can make it out it'll have to be for gnrs anyways. i won't be able to get time off for the autorama due to the olympics coming up. but hey, if it's the better one anyways....

That's a great idea Greg. I go every year on Friday and I agree it's the best day.

Can you park by NHRA museum?

No - you're not supposed to park that long there - but we just park in the other lot and walk to the museum.

I've never tried just leaving a car in that lot - you might get away with it - not like it's a metered lot or anything.

One last comment on GNRS... and I'll shut up!

ON Saturday while everyone in the entire world was at the show - Rudy and I would hit all the shops -- Barry Whites - Coddington - So Cal - Marcels (across from Foose) personally I could spend the whole day there! - Foose... and sometimes go see what was cookin' at a couple of the bigger engine builders around town... and, or, take in the Peterson Museum...

I'd do a Google map of all the locations I wanted to see - it's amazing how many are close enough that if you're "organized" = you can hit quite a few... and don't forget to check the schedule for FONTANA as they may be running drags on Saturday or Sunday...

For me - making the trip to "LA" area is always like a pilgrimage to hot rod heaven. There's always so much more going on there than Seattle area.

Are those shops open on Saturday?

YEP they are Al ---- been doing this "tour" every year -- and it's fun. Good people and projects in the shops - and few people - JUST MY KINDA DAY!

Now -- right after I've said all this -- it is a "recession" -- and things have changed and not in a good way - so if you're planning this kind of Saturday tour - it wouldn't hurt to give them a call BEFORE you make your plans.

Thanks Greg, definitely going to do that on Saturday. I heard Chip has 3 killer projects going on.

My understanding is that Boyd shop closed.

Marcel always has something cooking.

About a yr ago, I was at Barry's and they were building a killer 55 chewy.

Perhaps we can do the shop thing together.

AL --

I'd love to but stopped going down there. I always gave this "trip" to my Brother in Law for Xmas... but after several shows - became bored - had been to all the shops more than a couple of times - so like much of life - we "moved on". Ditto Hot August Nights. We went for 13 or 14 years or more so long ago I can't even remember... but again - doing the same thing year after year became boring... so now I've tasked my sister with coming up with a new show/place to go each year. If we like it - we go back once more - if not - no biggie. So this year we hauled to Rod Run to Yellowstone... met a couple there from Wyoming - and they've talked us into joining them at Kool Deadwood Nights... That - and I'm going to try my hand at Power Tour for the first time this year (well "next year" actually since it will be 2010).

Just a "car thing" about BOYD - and yes, I'm sure that shop is closed up by now... After watching the build of "Junkyard Dog" -- and watching these bozos form the gap of the trunk using bondo and a razor knife... ALL pretense of 'quality' and that name went on the cutting room floor... We crossed that shop name off of our tour list. We then added Corvette Mike...
