Brand new zr-1 vette, 7 weeks old, owner had it gutted and caged, and had wrap put on it, its a copy cat compuware car, but its genuine zr-1, tracked prepped.
He was leading the thunder nasa race, racing in st-1, and was leading a couple stock car su cars and ran out of talent, did not lift when he got 2 tires in the grass and when he came back on track it snap over steered bouncing off 2 walls, was first time on track with this car.
This was at the nasa races at watkins glen this weekend, all classes were running, american iron,su,etc

I doubt it hurt his wallet much -- generally a guy that's going to take a car like this out - has deep pockets and isn't making payments.
Now - if he is making payments - then you just can't fix STUPID! LOL
I have a friend that vintage races (or I should say did until he sold the car for 4 million dollars) a REAL 63 Corvette Grand Sport... they (husband and wife both drove the snot out of the car) crashed it several times == no biggie == just bring her back to the shop and fix it up good as new. Another friend races a real Mercedes Gullwing.... and thinks nothing of it.
I couldn't buy the door handle of either of these... thus... no racie! LOL

LOL When I talked to Jake yesterday the first thing I asked him was to check and see if the guy wanted to sell the engine!
Jake said if I had one of these it would be pictures of my wreck! so true, so true.

Too funny! AND yes -- that might be most of us as well!!
A little too much throttle and light on skills -- bad combo!

first time on the track with a fresh non sorted car?
Parts of the story must be missing. Theres no way anyones stupid enough to take a fresh car thats newly built and COMPETE with it without doing some track testing.
Otherwise, darwinism at its best. Either way thats a shame.
Are the brakes for sale?

no its simple, he practiced 1 session, then qualified with the car, then raced, so I guess he had 25 laps on the car. He did not go 2 feet in when he started going off track, which led to gaining speed, then hitting the wall, i was there and saw it. it was turn 8-9, he was partially driving with his rear view as there was a super unlimited car behind him.
I talked with him for 10-15 mins after he settled down.
this is nasa pro racing, not a track day.

I understand that its pro racing. Was the car sorted and had he done any testing whatsoever in the car before this event? Or was it the first outing all together?
I don't care how much experience the guy may have racing Nasa, it just seems pretty silly to compete in a fresh car you've barely driven.
Regardless, live and learn, I'm sure he can afford it.

That sucks. Looked like a pretty hard hit. I'm glad he's ok.
It kind of looked like there were a few areas he was having a hard time with the car.
Corvettes don't make good 4X4's. :drive:

That could've happened to anybody. That track gives you little room for error. I like the thought of the desert or grass when I make a mistake, not a steel fence 10 yards off the track. He should've waved the guy by.

He was having problems with that corner on a consistent basis. Race tires and grass, Mr. Fender meet Mr. Armco. Depending on the track, although I dont think he hurt the armco, you can be held responsible for repairs to the track equipment.

Clear case of running out of talent. Nice to be in the lead but you got to have a feeling for when you're pushing beyond your abilities and he just kept on messing up that turn (and many others). Nice driving in the camera car, just stayed back and saved the tires for when the Corvette ran off.
