View Full Version : GM fuel line 45 double flare or something else?

I need to bend and flare better fitting hardlines for old school chevy. I have Mastercool 71450 Double Flare & Metric Bubble Flare Tool Set . Can i do it with 45 double flare for this application?

Or do i need mastercools " GM 5/16" fuel line 71415 adapter set" ?

GM fittings they're talking about are the "push to connect" style...

Double flares are usually for brake lines

45 single flares are used in many gas lines etc. BUT the style of flare etc depends more on what your RECEIVER style is... so you kind of need to figure out BOTH sides of what fittings you're using before you can know what you need to make up.

The AN style fittings use a single 37 degree flare...

So you see why you're not getting an answer? It's hard to say "do this"... because nobody would know what else you're using/trying to do.

A P.S....


You can't double flare Stainless steel... it cracks... so don't even try that...

The fittings you show in your picture are double flare... you don't want to over tighten this style of flare - the double flare kind of acts like a spring - and the nut is there to push on that spring loaded (kinda) fitting. In this case the nut does NO sealing - it only pushes the flare to seat.

Single flare 45 degree need a backing flare (forget the name of this piece right now) that the nut pushes against...

Metric BUBBLE flares are almost like a bulb on the end of the tube..

Okay - Yes 45 double flare works just fine - but like I said - if you're going to try to fancy things up a bit - then you might have to go to another type... because you CAN NOT double flare stainless steel.

I've even tried to anneal it (SS) and it still cracks or splits.

That's why most of us use the 37 degree AN stuff... I guess.
