View Full Version : Overhaulin'
After catching an episode of Overhaulin' today it got me thinking. Does anyone know how accurate the timeline is they lead us to believe on TV?
Or what kind of quality the cars are when finished? Are the owners responsible for any of the expenses like parts, labor, taxes?
Have any of the cars turned up on the market for sale and if so how did they do?
I am just curious.:lateral:
The filming definitely takes place over 7-8 days on al but a few of them but the cars are kept after they reveal it to safety check them and go over everything with a fine-tooth comb which is why the mark almost never drives the car at the end of the episode.
I've seen a bunch of them in person and the quality is up there and curb appeal is always over the top but just like our cars, depends a lot on what you had to start with, i.e. rust buckets that take an extra day or two to hang panels on. Rushing the bodywork may create issues down the road and best case scenario require another cut and rub a few months down the road when things shrink.
I've seen a lot of them go up for sale at Barrett-Jackson, Hot Rod Hotline, EBay, etc for various reasons ranging from "where the hell am I supposed to park this thing and not have a panic attack every time I hear a car alarm?" to "I wonder if I can capitalize on this car's new found fame?" Don't know what they sold for but it depends on a bunch of things like selling an oddball like the van or the Tahoe in the depth of the recession or selling a 1st gen Camaro 4 years ago.
Of course they're responsible for the taxes! Do you think the IRS is going to let that slide?
Do some Google searches and to the magazine guys reading, round some of them up for feature articles! 90% of them are in So-Cal!
I guess I'd be a happy guy if someone took my car and built it for me. But to have any issues with it after the build and get the bill for the taxes would suck. I imagine some of the owners who may not have a secure place to keep it would risk theft and want to sell. But to try and make a buck on someone elses hard work and a gift at that, well that is pretty low in my mind.
I would love to see an article on those builds. Kind of a "where are they now" write up.

Reminds me of that suburban Stacey built on TRUCKS, it changed hands so many times and ended up just being a bare shell after it was all said and done. I will try and find the article.
Hope none of these cars ended up like this.

The 4 door nova 2 that was done a while back is here in my town... Good kid, he deserved it !
After the reveal, they did as stated above, had to have it safety inspected before giving it back. The guy who did the inspection was an idiot ! He kept the car for roughly 3 months, drove it around and told people he built it... Anyways, he took alot of the enjoyment out of the experiance. The owner was even told that the new engine was junk and he needed to put a new crate motor in it (at the owners expense) , keep in mind it had a brand new Edelbrock crate engine... i believe the guy was trying to pull a fast one and get the Edelbrock engine... Pretty sad. I had to go help out getting the air ride to raise the car since the guy killed the battery and it had to be towed to the owners house. I was asked to trailer it to a local stereo shop to get it fixed, but sorry, an aired out Foose built car... not taking chances, so we luckily fixed it in his garage. Chip and his team did a very good thing for these people and this hobby ! Sad to see creeps out there trying to get something for nothing...

That sucks! the inspector should be fired at least. What an ass.
I am glad to hear the kid deserved the car. I hope he is enjoying it.

the 66 or 67 charger (built at sema) was on ebay with a buy it now of $115k a while back
the 30 ford that started out with a mazda motor was at the classic auction in Palm Springs last yr. Not sure if it sold, but it looked really good in person.
I'd be interested to know what the taxes are based on? Especially considering there have been quite a few people on the show that hadn't done anything with the cars because they couldn't afford to.
Definitely cool to see them doing this for people though.

You're welcome.
I haven't gotten to see many of the shows, but one I remember well ... the Grand Theft '50 (Ford) episode.
The owner was an older fellow who I believe managed a car museum, maybe Peterson's?
They had a real cop I think leading his friend away in handcuffs as part of the prank. I thought the car owner could've have had a heart attack!
Here's my favorite from that link.

I think they overlooked an important aspect on the earlier seasons of that show. Sure it would be awesome to have that done to your car but imagine if you could go out there and hang while it was being done. Help out where appropriate, chill with Chip some, have lunch with the teams each day, etc. Those would be some incredible memories.

x2!!!! that would be so killer.
Funny story i recently found out from my mom. My brother and I both have 3rd gen novas mine a 70 and his a 69. When they bought me mine it was in better shape than his and had a v8 where as his had a 6 cyl/slushbox. After he graduated high school he had the entire car torn apart getting the prostreet make over via a loan and the chassis works catalog. So unknown to him (obviously) she submitted his car to overhaulin' on the off chance they'd pick him. Sure enough she got a call. They asked if it was at least a rolling chassis and it wasn't the floor was out and it was getting backhalved at the moment. they said sorry they cant take it and moved on. Poor guy...he still has no idea. My mom doesnt have the heart to tell him haha.

The TV build does take a week but often times they spend WEEKS after the build finishing stuff up, making stuff work, and tweeking.
Considering the time frame the quality is good although I've heard of a few mechanical issues.
The owner is 1099'd for the value of the parts. They found away around billing them for the labor, but the free build ends up costing quite a bit. Still, I wouldn't turn it down.

Just parts, that is not quite as bad. Still, that is a sizable amount of income to get hit with and no withholding $$. Whew.

They may have changed it on season 5. On my build they appraised the car before and after and I paid taxes on the difference. The amount I paid was substantially less than what it would have cost in parts.
As with any build the car did need some finishing touches. I will say Chip, Discovery Channel and a few of the vendors all helped out after I received the car back. I also may have lucked out, prior to receiving the car back it was in the Pirelli booth at SEMA so it may have received a little finer tuning.

I have a couple friends who worked on several episodes of the show and it really does take place over 7 days. The clock is weird though. It ends at like 4am or something like that.
