In my dilusional quest to build something unique and crazy fast i've been contemplating awd. :willy: Has anyone done it? Thinking turbo LSx in a gen I camaro with awd. :hail:

well i seriously thought about it for my "shop" truck shop truck (http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=1120)

but i decided i didnt want the engineering headache so im saving the awd parts for the next project.

i think awd in an f-body is gonna be super hard to figure out, simply because after you engineer and fab up a subframe for the front diff, where is the motor gonna go? either up or back, niether of which sound ideal. i think the idea rocks, if you can figure out how to package it...it would be sweet

there is a guy in the hybrid section of LS1tech.com that is putting an LS1 into a Subaru WRX.. I don't remember if he is keeping the AWD..

Bad thing about AWD is the huge amount of drivetrain loss you have.. something like 25%..

Rodz- That is one mean "shop truck" and yeah I know it will be a MAJOR undertaking to complete a project like this. I've been searching posts and pictures for a while now and ideas are coming. More than likely would set the motor back and cut the firewall a bit. Looks like the syclone front diff would be an acceptable setup tho likely to require some custom 1/2 shafts and use C5 rear drive hubs ;) I love engineering crazy stuff and something like this would be quite an addition to my resume (as an engineer) No doubt it would be years in the making but hey it keeps me out of trouble.

Steve- Yeah awd does have a good bit of parasitic loss in the driveline but it's all a give and take. Being able to rip off 1.5 60ft's on street tires (not DR's) on an unpreped surface is well worth it. :yes: Ever tryed getting a 600rwhp car to hook up below 50mph on radials, it's no fun.

And the ultimate reason to try it, as far as I know nobody has done an awd Gen I maro so might as well be the first. :thumbsup:

well my next...or next+3 project.... is a 33 chevy 3 window coupe(steel), i have typhoon front diff, trans/t-case. im not really sure about any details yet, other than its also gonna be fenderless.... and probably be a lil more driver friendly.

i figured i would use 930 c/v's, with custom shafts, custom knuckles with ?? for hubs...also tryin to figure out if inboard brakes will work on the front as well as the back........ as they become "sprung" weight, and i really dig the big wheels with nothin behind em look.

anyway...we wanna see lots of pics, with enough time an money...damn near anything is possible.... so get that awd f-body project goin :D

Check over at www.syty.net there is a guy who put a LS1 in a Typhoon. He built his own website (I can get link if you need it) on how he did the whole swap. I would think using SYTy awd or Bravada parts is the way to go.

I think John Lingenfelter built that truck for himself before he passed away. RC awd sonoma with a turbo LS1 if I remember correctly. But yes please do find that link :thumbsup:

Great for fast takeoffs on just about any surface. Totally awesome in the dirt and loose stuff with the adjustable center differential, I had an entire afternoon of fun a little while back on a friend's 650 acre ranch; the pastures had about 2" of greenery on the ground and it had just rained a little bit. It's also pretty much "idiot-proof" on the asphalt, but tends to push when driven hard, as AWD cars tend to do.

A well sorted 2wd will still get around a roadcourse faster, but if you are willing to give up a bit of max-effort cornering ability the additional straight-line traction AWD provides is wonderful. Lots of HP + AWD would be an evil combination for street tires as it will hook just about anywhere. Take it off the pavement and it really shines. High-HP Sy/Ty's, plus Nissan Skylines, Subaru STI's, Mitsu Evos, the Escort Cosworth, and a few others come to mind. There are many guys on the Subaru forum I watch pulling 1.5x 60' times on relatively narrow street tires (usually 225 wide) although that's rather hard on the drivetrain and clutch.

Plus, given enough power, you can do awesome AWD burnouts. The Top Secret-built Skyline (about 1200hp) does some WICKED 4-wheel burnouts. :D

I say go for it. I honestly thought about it on my car but given the size of the transfer case you're going have difficulties with headroom; if you want to keep the car low you're going to have to REALLY raise the floorpan for clearance.

I talked to Mark Stielow personally about the stuff that is avaialable now. He mentioned that there is a AWD Pro-Touring car being built as we speak.... it will be using a Cadillac Escalade AWD transfer case. This unit although larger in size is much stronger considering power handling capabilities.

I am no expert, but would like you to explain something. If the above is true why did officials give weight penalties to AWD cars (Audi) in the BTC Series? Was it just a matter of inferior technology? Do they still give weight penalties to AWD cars today? Have 2wd systems caught up w/ AWD systems?

The truck Lingenfelter built and died in was a Sonoma/S-10 pickup, red i think.
