1968 Firebird Paint Progress

Im taking on my next paint project. My friend Mitch's (vannatta20) 1968 Firebird. It is currently in the primer stage. Final color will be a dark gunmetal metallic. Let me know what you think.

OMG! as much as you don't like my comments of constructive criticism,I have to put in my .02c, please take the extra time to remove old crust off the pinchwelds around the windows and clean all the rust,loose dirt and old paint, STOP using that garbage red putty, or atleast use it wha is was made for,not use it a skim coat, it was made for small pin holes and I would never use it on anything else,not to fill scratches or do bodywork with it, don't take it as an insult, I just hate to know that this car will rust in no time, when you can take extra time to do it right

well if you didnt really think about it you would just assume you primed over everything but im sure that if your going to take the time to replace the quarters, youre going to take the time to do the rest of the job right. my only recommendation for the future is throw the nitrostain away! get some nice evercoat metal glaze to fill in the pinholes and it will gaurantee a quality job..:thumbsup:

evercoat makes an easy sand polyester filler, it self levels, sand easy with 180-220, and has a hardener so it will shrink very little.

thanks, I appreciate it. The acrylic glazing putty works great, I have been using it for years and have never had a shrinking or cracking issue, nor any rust from under the paint. I do take the time to thoroughly clean everything beforehand. Ill post up some more pics as the progress continues.

John510; thanks for the compliments, i really appreciate it. I agree with you 100%, i mean i do ask for criticism, thats why i post my work on here. But i would hope that people understand that im 22 and a beginner at this

Well i appreciate your criticism, but you have been doing this for 18 years and i have been doing it for like 1 year consistantly if that, so please keep in mind in new at this painting thing.....

like I said Ive been doing it consistantly for about a year. But off and on for at least 4. So yeah using it for years is an accurate statement. Thanks for trying though. I must be doing something right for having at least 8+ months of work scheduled if i wanted it. You must be a real busy guy though with your paint work if you have time to come on here and bash other painters work and teqhniques because they differ from your own. Thanks for the try bud, but i will take advice from macco before Id ask you for any assistance.

once again, the pictures do not show the entire process and for you to pass judgement when you were not there to see what was sanded, welded and cleaned is just plain ludicrous. Come see what i do every step of the way and i would be happy to listen to your criticism, but seeing a few random pics of the progress at different stages and to say i did it wrong is stupid. Also the cars I painted years ago (using the same processes) are still looking just as good to this day with no rust or issues whatsoever. Time does tell and if rust was to form it would have after 3 to 4 years without being consistantly garaged. Like i said before, I know what stupid things not to do like cover rust and crap with filler, I will admit to being an amature but i will not admit to being just plain stupid like you make me out to be.

When i said assistance i didnt mean literally, what i meant by that was advice, you can read into stuff i hope and not take everything i say literally. Either way this doesnt look like undercoating/chip gaurd to me for not being color sanded yet...

i use marglass, its like a fiberglass filler then light rage gold filler to smooth it out.

Its a sherman williams planet color paint. It was one of the few charcoal colors I saw in their book. I think is was called sinister something.

next time around i promise promise promise if you take my advice you will be sooo glad. to minimize your trash issues you have... if you back tape all your door openings, tail light holes and trunk holes with two inch tape, come back and lay 18 or 36" paper over it and trim it to fit tight with no slop you will cut your trash in half! literally half. besides the trash and texture id say you did a pretty decent job. looks like all your metallics layed out nice too..

I love the mono-chromatic paint scheme. I had a yellow 69 Firebird done up the same way. I think it looks better than the chrome bumper. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. :thumbsup:

Nice progress! Please give me a call though, I cannot get the drivers door to fully latch. You know how the door latches twice? I cannot get it to fully latch and I can not adjust the striker enough to fully close the sucker. It seems like the striker needs to come out more but there is no adjustment left. 2 steps foward 1 step back like always.....

Still doing some more aligning and trying to finish all the small details. Its really dusty as well. Thanks Brian for all the help this weekend. We got a lot done!
