I hope this is the right place to post. This is my Porsche 944 Project I'm building with my buddy. We're turning it into an extreme race car to run in SCCA, PCA, and NASA. The engine plans to be turbo'ed with extensive internal modifications, full Moton suspension, custom roll cage, widened fenders, body kit, lexan windows, and much more. These pictures are bit old, in fact I forgot that the car actually used to look like this. Monday I will be going in to school to start cutting out rusted panels and such, and hopefully get new pics.

Here we go:

What classes do you expect to run in for the various sanctioning bodies? In NASA, you'll likely have to run with the big boys in Super Unlimited, abd though not always very crowded, when they show, the SU cars are FAST. Like, real fast. REAL fast.

Cool car, havev a great time building it, it is a really educational and fun process. Keep posting!

SCCA we are running Prepared. NASA PCR we are GT3.

Definately educational. This is the project for our Automotive class at school.

Mike,
I am staring my Ultima GTR build and just received my G50/52 trans from Power Haus II. Do you know of a good source for a service manual. Its a brand new trans, but I think they ran them in the Carrera 964?
Thanks,
chris

From what I've heard about 944 engines/drivetrains, your most inexpensive option would to scrap it and install an chevy lsx/t56 drivetrain. You could spend thousands on the Porsche engine and end up with something that's still very fragile and prone to issues.

Sweet project. What panels are you cutting out? Unless you found that car at the bottom of a lake the only rust prone places are under the battery.

cslithergo and Mike, check out http://forum.rennlist.com there's a wealth of Porsche info there.

As for running a built turboed engine, check the rules for the class you want to run first. If you're still set on building a turbo engine, start with an engine out of an originally turboed car, they use sodium filled exhaust valves and have some internal variations from the N/A engine. This also means that you would probably want to look at getting a 951 transaxle that has a bit taller gears and LSD. A good place to start on 944Turbo parts is www.lindseyracing.com. And a good mechanical referance is www.clarks-garage.com

As for running an LSx backed by a T-56, you'd really have to consider the class you plan to run in, not to mention you'd have to re-engineer the rear suspension. If you plan on going V8, keep the transaxle. Porsche engine's aren't all that fragile, but there are some things to watch for. The head is an interferance design and a broken timing belt will be expensive. The number 2 rod bearing is prone to spinning, but there are fixes to prevent this (refer to rennlist for details). Aside from this, the engines are pretty stout.

good luck.
