Finally got out to the storage location of the Camaro I picked up in November last fall. The car was originally fully restored in 1989 with a full sub-frame off, interior refresh and re-paint. Originally the car was a 350hp 396 SS. Engine is original heads and intake, but block was replaced with a punched out 454 for driving purposes and the original block is being stored. Z/28 stripes were added in the late 70's and were kept when it was repainted in 1989. Car only has 250 miles since 89. Everything looked really good except a small scrape on the driver rear quarter that happened when it was being moved several years ago. We pulled out the old fuel from the tank, and filled her up with new juice. All the plugs, points, and condenser were replaced because we weren't getting any spark. After that, the car started right up and we ran it for 20min and everything looked good, no leaks at all. All that is left is to go through the brakes, steering, and safety equipment and make sure she is road ready. It's a little dirty from sitting under a cover and has not been washed in the last 20years. It's only been around the block a few times since 89 to blow off the dust. Once I get it home, the Willwood brakes, Prodigy Bar 4-link, sway bars, Hotchkis parts, and Fikse wheels will go on the car. Here are a few pics from yesterday.

Thanks very much. :) Car was basically driven a few times after it was completed and then saw some runs around the block every couple summers to circulate the fluids. Car was stored in a heated garage on jack stands.

what's the story with the 442 and the impala? projects to follow on after the camaro?
Impala was ordered and bought new by his mother in 1964. It's a 64 Impala SS327 comvertible. 60,000 miles and 100% original except for some regular maintenance items. That car was driven until the mid 70's and then parked in their heated attached garage until about 5 years ago when she passed on. She was 97 years old. The car needs a full teardown because it was never started in over 20 years. It would probably fire but the brake system, fuel system and everything would need to be pulled apart and thoroughly cleaned.
Oldsmobile is a 72 442 W-30 coupe, 39000 miles, original owner from a local dealer in town. That car is fully loaded with every option but A/C. Light yellow color with black stripes and a black interior.
I might be able to aquire them from him eventually, as he is now in his mid 60's, but that is a little ways away. The Impala would need the most work since it hasn't been started in over 20 years. The olds would just need a clean up and a few maintenance items addressed, rebuild the carb, flush the tank, etc.

Well, went to take the car for a spin last night and had no real fuel delivery past 2000 rpm's so I figured the carb might be a little gummed up after sitting for so long. We pulled the carb off and took it apart for a good cleaning. Got that back together tonight, re-installed and it fired right up. Everything seems really good now and it runs really nice. Ran into a couple isues with burned out signal bulbs and the alternator regulator seems to be not working correctly. The voltage gauge seems to spike quite high with increased rpm's so that needs to be addressed. Other than that the prep seems to be coming along. Unfortunatley it looks like rain until Monday so it may have to wait for the maiden voyage until then. :(

Finally got the car back on the ground today after getting brakes bled, rough alignment done, and all the bolts checked. I had to set the coilovers at the top to get the equal ride height with the 2" front drop Hotchkis springs. Pretty happy with everything. Lot's of delays waiting for bushings and getting custom braided brake lines done but at least it is finished.

Thanks for the input. Once I got the coilovers on and the height set, I look to have gained a little. I probably have about 1/2" clearance on each side on the inside now and I don't think I could even do a 1/4" spacer to bring the rim out without cutting the lips back a little.

07-12-2009, 09:13 PM
Looks great man....if it rubs you can add an 1/8 to 1/4 spacer. You won't know until you get into some real agressive cornering. Make sure and play with the shock settings because they make a ton of difference.

Got the car into the alignment shop today. Everything was pretty close on the laser machine. I was out about a 1/4" on the rear with the alignment and about the same on the front. It needed a good amount of shimming to get the cars camber/castor sorted out but it drives pretty nice now. The prodigy bar seems to be pretty good riding compared to the stock leafs. Much stiffer and more planted ride than before. My stock seats I think are going to be an issue with hard cornering. I already feel myself bracing against the door panel and console.

Went for a drive the other day and broke a rocker. Luckily I got the car shut off before it did any damage or came apart.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RockerFailure004.jpg
Pulled everything apart and found a bent pushrod and an oiling problem from another.

With the taller rockers, I then had to change to a taller valve cover, and went to a fabricated aluminum unit.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b245/g356gear/RollerRockers004.jpg
They don't seem to take power brake boosters into account with these, so a little cut and re-welding and everything clears OK.

I picked up a set of Lemons Big block headers off a forum with 250 miles on them for a pretty good deal. I had blown a hole in my #4 cylinder header pipe and needed to get new headers anyway so the timing was good. They are a 2 1/4" pipe header with individual pipes and a 4" collector. They were ceramic coated and had O2 bungs for FI or fuel injection when it comes time for that. They fit super tight and some of the clearances are within 1/8". I had to trim my motor mounts for clearance on both sides and remove 1 grease fitting off my suspension to get full lock to lock without contact. No biggy but they are that tight.

The quality is great but they leave almost no room for any variation between cars. Some of the steering parts moving lock to lock come within 1mm (1/32nd) of contact, it's that tight. I have a couple wear spots on the headers where there was rubbing from the previous owner and hea was running the same year car with a BBC. Anything bigger than 2 1/4" piping I don't see how they would ever fit.

Painted to match the wheels would be a nice detail...
Noticed you don't have a breather in either of the V/C's -- I see a PCV in the drivers side and an oil fill in the passenger -- is that temporary? You need a breather in there somewhere... can't have vacuum (the PCV) without some replacement air...

Ordered some new Arizen Racing seats several weeks ago to replace the stockers. I had them done to match in Ivory vinyl and deluxe houndstooth. I should have them next week and will get some installed photos up. Here are the actual seat pics from Mark at Arizen. Should really help with my sliding issues out of the stock flat bottom units under hard cornering. :)
Also got a set of Eddie Motorsports billet aluminum hood hinges in machined finish. Should help with some slop I have in the original stockers.

I also ran into an issue with the original starter a few weeks ago. I had the car running for about 10 minutes and the starter suddenly engaged like I was turning the key to start the car!! Luckily I was in the driver seat and turned the key off......but it was still engaging! I ran around the front of the car to the battery and pulled off the negative terminal and everything stopped. I thought it might be a solenoid issue so I decided to switch to a mini starter to be safe. I pulled off the header, installed the new unit and everything seems fine now. There was no flywheel damage at all. It ended up being a bit of a blessing. The clearance was really tight on the header tube with the factory starter and I was having heat soak issue with the stock unit anyhow. The new starter is lighter, smaller and seems to crank the BBC over no problem. Any excuse I can give my wife for parts upgrades is fine by me. :)

Finally started to pull the car apart for the big color change. I am pretty happy with how solid the car is. Very little rust anywhere, even in the rear quarter lower areas. You can see a lot of the original Garnet Red paint, which is what I think I will be going back to. Here are some pics.

Dont worry, I am not going to try to use the original Garnet red. I want to bring it into the modern time, and get away from the flat color that the orange had. I am not sure if I will do a little metallic or pearl to give it a little pop.

Got the last of the stuff off the car Sunday and Monday nights. I wasn't sure if the 15" corvette rally wheels would fit the back but they cleared the Willwoods by about 1/4" on the caliper. All thats left is put one of the original seats back in and deliver to the body shop next week. :)

I was told 6-8 weeks if I have all the parts available....which I do.:) That would put it back to me before the snow flies (fingers crossed) so I can get it back to the garage for assembly over the winter. Then I can take my time and do everything right.

Got the car into the shop this morning. Got a call around 4:30pm after they put the wheel to it in a few suspect spots and typical rust areas on these cars. Rear quarters had a ton of brass repair work in them...very bizarre stuff. Roof and trunk were all good with no filler to speak of. The strangest things were on the doors, hood, front fenders, and quarters. It was almost like the last body man was too lazy too align everything. The filler was on the panels and got progressively thicker, the lower you went down the car...on every panel. There was no evidence of damage on the insides of the panels that you could see or feel. When the wheel was put to it, the metal underneath the filler was straight and rust free. The hood was the same...no damage on the underside but about 3/16" thick filler skim coat on the whole hood. It goes tomorrow for media blast to get the rest of the car stripped. I guess we will then see what else is there.

A few cell phone pics from the body shop visit today. We were lucky we pulled out the headliner. When they did, a huge mouse nest and 2 dead mumified mouse corpses dropped on the guys. I guess thats what 20 years of storage gets you. Apparently the mouse poison that was in the car worked!:captain:

I understand what you are saying, but I dont have any crap rims big enough to clear the 14" Wilwoods on the front. The 15" corvette rallys only cleared the rears by 1/4". I took a page from Mark Stielow's build book and did pick up a set of Corvette C4 17" spare tires today on Ebay for $26 each. I will get those in a week and swap out the front rims before it sees any body work.

Yep...driver quarter next and then the body is ready for finishing. While that is being done, the repairs to the bottoms of the front fenders can happen.

I have a dilemma of what to do with the original front fenders. They need repairs and patchwork to the lowers and are going to need a bunch of time to do. One needs a new inner brace to be re-worked. The other has a patch on the inside and outside sandwiching the original metal. Looking at an extra $500 per side in labour to remove, re-work, cut and re-weld. I have a feeling though, that number will increase to around $800 per side. I can get new AMD fenders for $450/side. Dilemma is to go aftermarket or save the originals. What to do????

Looks like they are doing a great job! As far as the front fenders go...sometimes they are not worth fixing. Have you looked around to see if there are any in better condition for sale? There's nothing like OE metal but you have to decide if it's worth the cash to patch them up. Mine were too shot to fix so I bought some repops...took three sets to get a couple we could work with and they needed quite a bit of work to 'fit'! They are Goodmark but I am told the 69's fit way better than my 68's did. After going through that with my car...I would try very hard to get some OE metal.

There are a few guys around with good solid original fenders, but pricing is anywhere from $1200-1500 !!:_paranoid

Thanks guys. Very happy with the shop so far. Any metal that was bad (quarters, truck drop downs, lower front fenders) got removed and replaced with new metal. Everything else on the car was solid and straight and didnt need much filler. They do a lot of extra hammer and dolly work to keep the filler to a minimum. You pay a little more but you know what you are getting.
Car will be going back to Garnet Red. We are going to do some color samoles and see about using hat color as a base and bringing it up a little to a more modern color that is not soo flat. Looking at color in about 2 weeks.

Alignment is great on the passenger side everywhere. Driver side is another story. We are tight at the cowl and wide at the header. We have decided to put the car on a rack and check the subframe alignment and see if the cowl could be off on the drivers side. We could make everything fit with the sub and cowl in their current position but I am not comfortable with that. If the car is apart...do it once...do it right.

Had the frame guy come and look at the cowl but everything seems to be pretty close. Ended up relief cutting and doing some adjustments to the fender mount locations and that has given us a lot more adjustment than the factory ever allowed for, which in turn has helped out the gaps a ton.

The header is aftermarket. They wanted to get the fender to hood gaps perfect and then were going to do some adjustments to the header. It needed some relief cuts and welding to get it to fit properly. It was that or put 2X as much labor into the original that was twisted and beat up pretty bad. We did put a gauge on the nose of the hood and the heel of the header and they were pretty close.

We have paint! I had a couple of colors to choose from since PPG has more than one formulation for Code 52 Garnet Red. One is a brighter red like Regal Red from the mid 60's GM color chart. The other was a deeper red and matched the rear speaker area, dash end, and floor rails that were still in their original factory color. I think the darker Garnet red will be good with the black stripes amd darker wheels.:)

Doors and fenders will be re-hung so they can get the stripes laid out, painted, and then have the final 2 coats of clear applied. Doors and fenders currently only have 1 coat of clear.

GM CODE 52 (WA 3921) translates into PPG CODE 2076 ....but......we did a comparison tint to get it closer as the color techinically isnt avaliable yet in water based.

Thanks! Yeah...really happy with how straight they got the body. Nice crisp lines everywhere. The body sealer joints look perfect like the factory did them.
Here's a few pics of the water base coat going on.

Exactly Tony. Thats how it should be. Its should not take months to years to prime, sand and paint a car.

Thanks guys. Project was 17 weeks from drop off to pick up. Only real delay was the media blasting that took about 10 days, just becasue of the amount of filler on the car. 5 complete passes to get it back down to metal! It was actually a new project milestone for this shop. They said usually for a project this size, they would be 6-7 months minimum. It sped everything up for them when I had all the required parts ready to go, and had a plan for what I wanted. There really weren't any changes mid stream, and that helped a ton.
