Buffing guys, color sanding?

Ive done a TON of color sanding. That being said Im doing a old caddy that is a football field,lol. I find myself wishing I had a guide coat to tell me where I left off last. Is there a guide coat used for color sanding?

This is a show car and the painter put eight coats on the car. Because of the number of coats the peel is BAD. So I busted it with 800 wet first. I just want to make sure I hit ALL the 800 scratch with the next few grits. I thought maybe a guide coat would aid in this process. I would hate to go through the process to find I missed a few 800 scratch marks.

8 coats? If I had done it would have got a sanding in the middle and never would have laid 8 coats in one painting. How long has it sat because with that much clear it will definitely shrink back and what looked perfect after a cut and buff may not look perfect in 6 months. I have started with 600 before, but normally I start around 800 or 1000 depending on how much peel there is. You could guide coat it, but have never done or wanted too.

Yeah my buddy had another guy paint it. You know "he got a deal":lol: . Its been a week in a half. Yeah Im taking my time on it because I know its going to haze back. My hope is Ill finish it with 1200 and let it site a while. Then Ill 1500 it and cut it. There was a TON of crap in the clear and TONS of peel to boot. My my paint jobs Ive been about to start with 1000. The 800 scares me a bit.

What color is it painted? With 8 coats you could start with 320 on that thing! :lol: You can let it sit opened up with the 800 scratches in it. Put her in the sun if you can to try and get the solvents out.

A trick I like to use is to sand in a different pattern for each grit. Example make X's with the 800, then do circles with the 1000, when you don't see any more X's your good. Then go back to X's, then circles, etc. A good PDR light is your friend...:yes:

Its HOK Kandy lime green. They used UC35 and that stuff is like water! Odd part is its pretty hard now and its only been a week. Ive buffed UC35 before and it buffed like butter.

Finished it up today. It turned out pretty good. Ill post pics tomorrow.

Oh, 8 coats of base! Totally different story. Candies do require 8 coats. We thought you had 8 coats of clear! I was thinkig like Jeff said, you need to 320 half that off so it does not shatter!

I was talking clear coat. Theres way more then 8 coats of base and kandy.
Heres a couple pics of the car. The owner is happy so Im happy. Now I just hope he doesnt scratch it when he puts it back together.

I have a 62 cady convert i am close to paitning and i am dreading the cut and buff stage.

My buddys tell me to lay down a few coats of clear then sand it then re spray the last coats of clear. They tell me it will lay down smoth and i shouldnt have to cut so much. 62's have so many edges i would hate to burn it and you are rightr its like 2 football fields long.

My buddy works for Neds he is a PPG slinger

I have to say being the one that didnt paint the car I was trippin a bit. Never even came close to going through! I guess they really put that much clear down.
My plan for my Camaro is to clear the car with four coats and cut it with 600. Ill then clear is again with four coats and cut it with 800 on up. Ive done this with cycle parts before and the clear just flows out so nice!

just make sure there's enough clear after the wet sand in the middle to never go through into the sanded clear. If you break through the top coats into the sanded area it leaves an image, and you'll be re-painting or spotting to fix it.

About four years ago I went through on my first paint job. I stacked it up to "oh well it was my first" Took forever to fix. Kandy doesnt act very well when you try and recoat it. All in all it was a good start. I havent gone through again, knock on wood,lol.

Man that paint is sweet. I hate to admit it because I'm not a big green fan, but that is really spectacular.
