Today the rear end in my car developed a strange clunking sound at slow speed / leaving from a stop. It only does it a couple of times until I get up to speed and then it seems ok but I don't want to drive it now until this is figured out.

It almost feels like it is missing a tooth on the axle or ? something and I am noticing it on (what I think) the right rear.

Does anybody have any advice or thoughts they would like to share? Please!

if its not a consistent speed dependent clonking then its propably not the rear itself... im willing to bet that you have some form of link type rear suspension and one of the links has gone bad... the clonking at low speed occurs before the link is loaded to eliminate the play...

Hey Steve...

I'd be suprised if its the diff if the noise disappears once you get moving.. Plus to break a gear tooth, you would need to be beating on it a the time...

Id look at all your suspension points and u-joint...something is probably loose/broken...hopefully something no big deal.

Thanks for the responses everyone...Ned, I have checked everything and all is good, I think that it is definately internal (at least that is how it feels). Looks like i'm going in, uuhgg!...lol

Update: pulled the rear apart and inspected everything....all is good, just did not have enough additive in it!

Now I feel better...lol

That's good that it was just additive...better than loose ring gear bolts any day of the week.
