View Full Version : You have to quiet down your car with a minimal loss of power...

How would you do it. What muffler combo? Borla? Magnaflow?
2 Mufflers 2 resonators? 4 Mufflers?
I'm trying to prep my car for laguna seca. Their sound limits are 92 decibels and the readings are taken at 50 feet from the track apparently.
I'm currently running 2 chamber flowmasters with an h-pipe, 2.5" diameter. Dumps behind the rear axle...
its... loud to say the least :_paranoid

ZTgSVykiw_Ufirst an x-pipe setup will quiet it down and give you more power or at least a better curve that the h-pipe.
and second i would bet money that you will gain power by going with a straight through design like the borlas or magnaflows over a chambered design and be quieter
i prefer the sound of borlas but magnaflows are a little quieter...

I agree. An X-Pipe and tailpipes will make a surprising difference. Resonators DO cut down on power.

The sound meter at Laguna is on the right side of the track. Make tailpipes that you can add 90 degree turns on the ends to point the exhaust to the left. Pozzi runs there and should also have tips. Sometimes even your engine makes it too loud and you might need a closed air cleaner and underhood insulation.

I have been told Flowmasters don't quiet enough at Laguna. Our 73 Camaro has a 3" X pipe then just before the mufflers we put flowmaster reducer cones from 3" to 2.5" then into the Walker 2.5" mufflers, then flowmaster mandril bent tail pipes. Even then, the car has gone over depending on conditions, so I made up some elbows for the tail pipes to divert sound to the left. We also run a 1970 Z/28 air cleaner instead of the usual open element one. It costs 10 RWHP though.
The car sounds very quiet on the track, like a stocker almost. I think the Laguna DB limit is BELOW what the state of California requires.
Here is mary in the red camaro at Laguna.

Jake,
No we run -1 deg on Mary's Camaro. It might be 1.25 now, I don't remember.
David
Here's a better shot showing camber.

I'm thinking about just having an extra set thrown on to see how quiet I can get it.
Damn laguna's neighbors :(

I was reading about the elbow tricks. I've also read that people shift into high gear before the booth and cruise by

Diddo on pointing the exhaust away from the meter.
When I raced my Mustang for the first time I registered a 118 db (100 feet from the track edge at BHF, driver's left). I was running a simple system with a dump in front of each back tire.
I rerouted the left side pipe to the right side and the reading dropped to 93db.
Sometimes it's not so much quieting the car as it is keeping sound pressure from the meter.
