From Pro-Tour to Grand-Tour (my new ride)

I guess that I am getting old as things appeal more to me now than they use to.

Well my daily driver (96 Tahoe) has 166,000 miles on it and is still running like a top. Everyday I get in and say...is this the day I need to put a $2500 transmission in a $6000 truck. I have been driving this thing and making the sacrifce so I can spend money on the 69. It came to an end last Thursday. I still have the Tahoe as a back-up/rainy day vehicle, but I broke down and bought one of my friend's cars. It is a 93 BMW 850ci with 70,000 miles.

This car is really outside of my confort zone as I have owned one foreign car in my life...a Jag XJ6(which I loved) I have always like the 850 and it is a pretty rare car, but that is not why I bought it. Besides being exstemely well maintained, it is one of the best all around driving cars I have ever been in. I would not call this car a sports car as it is a pig weighing in at a svelt 4000lbs, pulls about a .89 on the skid pad and does 0-60 in a mid 6. Top end is suppose to be about 180-188.

But what a great driving car. With that much weight you know it is going to ride good, but it does not feel heavy, the V12 (yes it has a V12) is a smooth as silk. It really comes into it own about 60mph on the interstate.

Is it the "Ultimate Driving Machine?" For my old ass it is real close.

HAHA good read... I've always like bimmers and i wish i had one, i just dont want to repair it when it comes time!! yikes.. LOL.

Not a thing wrong with bimmers. I had a new 88 735i, probably the best driving, handling car I ever owned. Other than the price for service, I had no complaints about it. I have been tempted from time to time to dive back into those waters....

yea I am a little concerned on the service side of things. I was told, You can pick them up relatively cheap but when you take them in for service it is still a $90,000 car.

I guess being a car guy I needed to own a V12 once in my life. Of coarse I am thinking if this car had more power it really would be a ball. I believe they make a twin turbo kit for this thing...if I just could get the 69 finished.

It is also hard to keep my wife out of it as well.

Nice car Payton I love the styling of those cars they always remind me of my first car Mitsubishi Starion. The 850ci looks like its big brother.

My wife had a Starion in College that she absolutely loved and still talks about that car today.

Mine is black with an M series style wheel. I think they call them split 5's.

Yeah, the one I had was a inline 6, not so much hp but very torquey. It takes some getting used to their power vs. V8 American iron, but once you get the feel, they are hard to beat. My car had creature comforts back in 88 that GM is just now getting around to. Dang it, you got me wanting one again :yes:

You are going to love this. Called the dealer to see if any recalls had been posted on the car. He was reading my option list and get this. It has tear gas sensors...what in the hell. I guess it will buzz if I am ever in a riot situation incase I did not notice the crowds.

As far as tech on this car. If you drive in 4th (auto) that is the comfort mode and it short shifts easy and smooth. If you leave it in 3rd it changes the fuel maps, increases the shift points and firmness. It is like 2 different cars. It also has traction control, ride control, dual climate controls, pollen filters on the A/c, heated seats, 12 speaker stereo system,built in phone...really a technical tour deforce for 1993.

Great car--especially in black. Congrats. Now all you need is a service manual and some metric tools. Learn how to freshen the brakes yourself you won't mind the dealer service "pinch" so bad.
