I have a 69 camaro that I picked up a few years ago, it is pretty much all the way taken apart. I would like to get all the body work done and get the car into at least primer, seeing how I don't have enough money to get it painted the way I want.

Since its taken apart, I wanted to have the car media blasted or acid stripped/dipped. What do you guys recommend and why?Can you guys recommend a good shop to do either, I am in SoCal.
I am also looking for a trust worthy body shop that can align/straighten body panels and leave the car in primer?
thanks for all your help,
Joe Acosta
Here are a few photos from a couple years ago I dont have any updated ones

They did our '70 Nova shell from top to bottom for $400 (If I remember right)
No doors, trunk lid, hood or fenders though.

Joe,

What part of SoCal do you live in. If Huntington Beach is close, you can try D&P Classic Chevy. If San Diego is closer, You can try Best of Show Coachwork's. I have used both shops in the last 2 years and would recommend both.

On my 68 Camaro I had Darryl at D&P Classic Chevy (closer to my house) put my shell with subframe on a rotisserie. They trailered it around the corner (3 blocks away) to Media Resurfacing and had them blast it down to bare metal. D&P took the shell back to their place and shop vac'ed all the media back out of the car. I believe they left in on the rotisserie so they could turn it over and blow it out with air and then shop vac it out again. Getting all that stuff out can take a good part of a day. After the shell was free of media, they prepped it, primed it and then sealed it with DP90.

Keep in mind that weather will play a big part on when the car gets brought over to the blasters and then back over to the paint booth.

Also put together a plan of what all you want done. What I had them do while it was over their was tub the rear end with DSE mini tubs, add DSE sub frame connectors and install a DSE quadra link rear end (4 link). I also had them undercoat the floor pans.

There's a board member on here that took his Camaro to D&P and wasn't happy about how they did his mini-tubs and DSE SFCs. His car is now going down to Best Of Show.

Personally my shop is Best Of Show. It's a bit farther (about 80 miles) but they are honest and don't low-ball the initial estimate just to get you in the door.

Give them a call and ask for D!ck.. they just had a '69 media blasted and should be able to give you a pretty good estimate. They also blasted and DP90'd a body for a guy that was in your similar position.

Tell him I sent you and ask for the Bad Penny discount. lol

There are other good shops around but they are even farther away (ie, Ironworks)

Hey Jay,

Here's a '69 BOS had done just a week ago. It came out very good and it was only $1750 for the whole car including fenders, doors, panes, etc.

The car was in great shape except for the oddly done quarters.

I must have just missed you Steve. I dropped the shop this afternoon, and saw the car sitting just as pictured.

I did pick up the invoice for it though and I think it as actually about 100 less than you quoted but, I should also note that, the 1600 didn't include blasting the hood, core support or inner fenders.

Sorry I missed ya... I got $1750 for the whole deal but they were going off memory.

Car looks pretty good.. just the funky way they put on the quarters, but that's not a big deal. I will be there today with Penny (afternoon)

Feel free to use these shots in your build thread.

Thanks,

I you look at those pictures I posted you'll see that whoever did the quarters (most likely long ago) attached them in a strange location rather than melt out the lead and end them where the factory did.

They did an ok job, just an od place to make the transition. And they did it different on both sides.

You never know what you'll find after the soda blaster. :)

Its kind of hard to tell in those pictures how the the previous guy did the quarters, and Steve is basically right, the guy cut up a whole aftermarket quarter, creative kind of strange weld spots.

there are couple more pics on this page here: http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=17154&page=2

Oh and I visited BOS on Thursday, they had the whole thing covered in etch primer, so as far as the media blasting/cleanup and seal process, well its done so I can can get back to you with a pretty good estimate.

I'll be sending you a pm right after this.

Actually your car is in pretty darn good shape. The fenders are like brand new and even the oddly done quarters arn't bad. Car is going to be killer when it's done.

Hey, that alum core support is at the shop. As D!ck to see it next time you're there. The radiator is HUGE. lol

Doing your write-up right now.

I hate to ask but what type of numbers am I looking at for a Best In Show job....

10k? 20k?

I'm not looking for a show quality penny job, nor a full resto, just a quality paint job. You've had a couple cars done by them right steve? What sort of turn around time have you typically seen?

They seem to be the best 'pro' shop I know of in socal. The local 'east la' paint shop wanted 6k for a quality job which seemed awefully cheap. I've seen the guys work and its not going to impress anyone at a car show, but it'd suit my needs especially considering how much I drive my car....

The saying is "when you're broke or happy"

In other words you can spend as much or as little as you want.

Turn around can be pretty good. Typically you get invoiced every two weeks for work done in that time. So long as you stay current work progresses. If you need them to stop for a bit they can.

I've worked with a lot of shops and it's hard to find good/honest ones. PM me and I can get you testimonials from a half dozen, or more, customers. I only know of one pissed off one and that's a long story.

I hate to do a quote. But I will tell you this. BOS doesn't low ball the quote to get your business knowing that they can squeeze you down the line. I've seen them quote $15k for a job and then the cust says "but xyz down the street said $10k".. later they find out the job ran $18k. In other words they try to give realistic quotes. The final price will ultimatly depend on the condition of the starter car and your wants and desires.

You can save a lot of labor if you bring them the car taken apart. Ask D!ck and he can give you some tips to cut the cost. Keep in mind that you will have several grand just in materials for a full deal (paint, filler, reducers, primers, sealers, clear, papers, tape, etc).. it really adds up.

PM me your number if you want to talk. :)

Oh, best of all, thier shop is clean.. And project move through the shop. The only ones that "hang out" for any time are ones where the owners are short on cash so they are having just a little done each month. They also do a lot of classic Porsches (sp?) and those guys are really picky.
