View Full Version : What is the most radical 69 camaro, EVER?

I'm working on putting togther a project 69 camaro with Typical Ironworks stuff, tube chassis and all that blah blah blah. But do you guys have any pics of the most radical 69 you have every seen, as in stance with or with out air bags, prefer air bags, because we plan to have a very aggresive static ride height. I'm looking for something along the lines of the G-Force cuda or the the Brunning Cuda but in a 69 Camaro. I'm also thinking of trying to wedge section the car and just to line the rocker up with front fender extensions. We plan just buy all the exterior panels and align everything up from there. We are not going to cut up a stocker.
Could some body give me tell me how much higher the front fender extensions are above therocker on the camro if the rocker was parrell to the ground. I'm sure somebody has a 69 camaro on this site.
Thanks
Rodger

Well let me post few I have been looking at. I was unable to get any pics of Orion off the lateral-g homepage. I know there was a Morrison chassis that some guy overseas was putting under a 69 but I can not find it for the life of me.

hearing or reading where the front fenders on Big Red were done like you were talking about. The nose was dropped for aero purposes. That car is suppose to be really low at the nose.
I will have to measure when I get home, but I think the fender extension makes up the difference to line it up to the bottom of the rocker...8 to 10 inches

I'm just looking for the car the either has a custom chassis to achieve a lower then usual ride height. Feslers camaro sits really low in the front, Orion has a wicked stance. Most all these cars are limited by the sub frame.

Well thank you for that one!!! we feel the love :unibrow:
i know with our sub frame Not that that is what your asking) and air ride with 18x10 285 tire the cross member sits 3/4" off ground,
and the limiting factor seems to be the inner fenders and that is easy to fix.

I know I should have called the only guy that always has a camaro and a tri-5 in their shop.
I have a new idea rolling around in my my head from a client that got me all worked up on a 69 camaro idea and then disappeared. Plus the Truck project is almost done. So I might as well start on a 4" ride height 69 camaro with a minor wedge section and stuff all the spare parts we have laying around. And I have a brand new muscle car magazine interested in coving the whole build since no one ever wanted to do a tech article series on Johns Nova and I now know how the system work I might as well run with it.

69 camaro due to the fact they look better super low due to the fender opening shape. 4" ride hight to rocker with no pinch weld, not the subframe or front crossmember. Probably 18's and 19's with the widest possible front and 345 rears with some modified corvette C6 suspension. I'm not going to let all the cats of the bag, but I'm just looking for inspiration other guys might have saved on their hard drives. If you can not tell by the project we build I like to build cars that sit lower then a laid out air bag car ever could with medium sized wheels. I have been thinking for weeks about this car and cannot think that I have ever seen a 69 Camaro of all years ever built to l this level. That is why I opened this up to my fellow car addicts.
So where is this 68 you talk about. Tylers 50/50 will be 4" with the body kit he has to install.

We built a camaro a few years ago that had a lot of work put into it. I know alot of people didn't care for it but it had alot of work placed in it. Full tube chassis, viper suspension, can-am'd quarters, custom interior, etc... It sold at Barrett-Jackson for $486,000 to Ron Pratt. It won the GM design award at SEMA... I just wish they had showed it more before the sale....

Hey Rodger,
Our 69 is all hand built like what you want to do, we used a Wayne front end and rebuilt the complete thing to get the cross member 1/2 inch off the ground and lowered the body over the frame, we rebuilt the complete back all by hand and the 3-inch exhaust allows the car to sit 1/2 inch off the ground and still drive.
Cant do full turns but I can drop it right to the ground while driving. I set out to build the lowest functional Camaro out at the time and think we achieved most of that. We also have a 345/35ZR19 on the rear and a 275/30ZR19 on the front so super wide wheels and we can do full turns.
I can send you some detail shots if you want or you can check out the post as we are finishing up the car now. Its getting ready to go into paint.

Absolutely nowhere near the amazing builds that many have already posted, you guys build some killer cars , but mine might be of interest.
It's not a low budget car, but th list of customisation that I could do on it (over and above what is being done) is still signiicant.
It's a 68 Camaro.
AME front clip. Coilovers all round
Minitubbed with 325x50x17's on rear
245x45x17 on front
I also wanted a 4" ride height and that is what has been achieved. No wedge
To achieve this, custom 4 link rear end, and on the AME front we increased to top of the coilover mounting point by 1.5" to give 2.5" of travel.
I would have loved to channel it and get it even lower, but I have to set a budget that is realistic and I had other mods that were more important to me.
As said maybe not quite what you are thinking, but it is in Australia and is running an AME front clip, not sure if this is what you may have been referring to earlier. Car still 10-12 months off completion.
My major customisations are all internal (massive dash, console and hood lining changes)

The rendering is a stylized version of the car I designed for a company in GA that Chris refers to which was stillborn a few years back when the budget fell apart. A buck was being built to mass produce C/F bodies that had a chopped top, laid back windshield, wedged body, functional aero underside, altered wheelbase, etc.

We were hired to install the AME front clip, do some sheetmetal modifcations and install a quadra link with mini tubs. We also built a pretty bitchin spoiler on that car. We do lot of fabrication only work. We chop tops for guys and build exhaust and do just segments of builds for customers that want to tackle certain aspects themselves. We actually built the exhaust and did some sheetmetal work on one of the 32 raodsters going for the AMBR last weekend Pomona. We built that exhaust and headers like 4 years ago. That was our 3rd set of headers ever.

Thanks for the link. I also agree about Widby's cars as the last few seem to be very similar. The attention to detail is there. The quality is there. Top notch car in every aspect. I just don't like the style. Too street roddish for my tastes is the best way to sum it up.

We have done a full chassis for the Gen 1 that does not require cutting your entire floor out of the car. The 4" (or less) ride height is still acheiveable. Take a look at our '70 Chevelle that has a 4" ride height and is completely street and track driveable.
Roadster Shop
01-28-2009, 04:07 PM
Here is the '67 on our full chassis. This owner wanted a higher ride height, more like stock, so this one will be sitting at about 5.5" with engine and full weight of the car. This car is tucking 345/30R20's under the rear which is a 28.5" tall tire as well. The car can easily go lower with simple suspension adjustments.
This car has a good amount of modification, not anywhere near as drastic as you are looking to do though.

Sounds like a cool project Rodger!
The black one was on air ride and a 29" tall rear tire. Rodger with a full frame you can put the motor up in the car high enough to clear the pan. That's the problem with the front sub on a camaro it doesn't let you put the front as low as the rear. In the bottom pic the car was 3.5" in the front and 4" in the rear, but the rear could go another 1" lower.

Killer thread and correct me if I'm wrong but I think the idea is to develop a chassis that allows the car to run at 4" rocker and frame height. The yellow car has rocker extensions but doesn't look right since the fenders haven't been modified. You can modify tubs for air ride but that won't allow you to drive it safely lowered.
Man that thing is straight!

Our 69 sits just a few inches from the ground and will roll there with no problem, you cant turn but you can go straight fast. We have lowered it more since the pic Rodger found. We have the front cross member 1/2 inch off the ground and the oil pan clears with a built LS2. We are running 19X10 275/35ZR19 front and a 19X12.5 345/30ZR19 and fits perfect. We have done the 20 on the rear and it just does not look right.
Cant wait to see what Rodger is going to do. Start a post on this and get some pics up.

Im building another 69 with 2008 ZO-6 complete suspension motor rear mounted trans and rear I took a original GRANNY Car with perfect rust free floors and cut it up. My last car had C-4 STUFF WITH a complete 2x3 frame and my new car has a round tube crome moly frame I think I'll use coil overs instead of air bags My last car had bags and you set it as low as it would go it made it hard to drive safetly it changes the sus, geomerty to much it's hard toget two different ride heights and drive good I like something i can drive and enjoy. I'll soon have pics as soon as i'm smart enough to put them no the putter Thank's REAL BOB

Stay tuned

I can understand all the hype on Big Red. But its a track car with tube chassis, heavy horsepower and stock car components and is build no different than other track cars. I know the intent was to keep the body and interior pretty stock. But for me Radical means a combo of everything from off the wall engine, custom chassis , serious ride height, trick suspension, one off body mods and eye catching paint, some full tilt recovery room interior, and proven performance to match. I understand the car has got a lot of exposure because of the races its been in and the crash. But again IMO its a track car and if I wasnt familiar with its background I personally wouldn't pick it out of a crowd or race because its radical, it would be because its IN THE LEAD.
#1 for most radical track car....yes
personally I would mix the killer 69 or Kenny D's 69 with Penny's performance or Jakes test car

It's in the May, 2009 Camaro Performers magazine. According to the article, it's on coil-overs. Rear wheels are 20X12 with 335/30ZR-20s, fronts are 19X8-1/2 with 245/35ZR-19s. Rear suspension is a modified Art Morrison triangulated 4-bar and front is a stock sub with Unisteer rack & pinion, and Speed Tech control arms.

No air here, it runs the QA1 coil overs. if i remember the bottom of the sub is 4-4.5 off the ground
255/30/19 and 335/30/20 on 19x8.5 and 20x12
we have toyed with the idea of putting one of the sub frames under it but the car is finished so nice i would hate to have to pull it appart.

WAS!
with out a doubt in it's own way
too bad he has gone to a new car, all be it more aerodynamic just not as cool!
The new GXP is an aero-bullet, but keep in mind he still has the original '69 Camaro race car, which was one of the standouts of the whole street car drag scene in the early '90s, and he won the championship a couple years ago with it... it's the single turbo car, so he still has an all-steel Camaro in the fleet. Who knows, it may make a comeback now that the super-bad twin car got hurt.

That is a total bummer about Pappas wreacking that Hemi Car, that car was an amazing masterpiece. Don't worry that single turbo car being outdated, it was running 6.70 at the Super Street Car Nationals last year. So He still has a bad ass single turbo camaro to run.

Geez Tom...Quite the Resume.....And cool cars on your site..
Master Fabrication/Restoration Technician Tom Farrell:
Tom Farrell has spent nearly his entire life learning the arts of metal fabrication, welding and repair, body preparation and painting and standard mechanical diagnosis and repair. Before graduation from high school, he had already created a number of specialty vehicles, fabricating custom frames, interchanging drive trains, creating one-off parts in his family machine shop, and working extensively with paint, body prep and fiberglass body parts. From 1981 to 1985 Tom worked as an apprentice and journeyman in an oil-industry related repair, fabrication and large-engine repair business. From 1985 to 1992 he served as supervisor and resident expert for this same entity. During this period, he became impressively expert in custom machining and fabrication, adaptation and painting of all manner of parts and frames composed of nearly every kind of metal used today. In addition, he perfected his all-source welding skills to a level of quality rarely seen anywhere in the world. In 1992, Tom followed a lifelong dream and joined a NASCAR Busch Series team, working for Allen Dillard Motors’ Racing Team in the Charlottesville, VA area. After one season of racing, his talents were recognized by the Carl Yarborough racing team and he moved there. By 1995, he’d been offered and accepted a position at the prestigious Penske Racing team. From 1995 to early 2007, Tom specialized in NASCAR race vehicle design and construction for Penske Racing. This included frequent prototype CAD work and designing and machining parts on three-axis CNC mills, custom fabrication of metal and carbon fiber parts and assemblies, suspension fabrication/tuning and body prep/painting. Tom’s position included hands-on involvement with nearly every aspect of the creation of these very complex race vehicles. Tom’s wealth of knowledge and expertise was recognized again in 2000 when Penske Racing moved him to their research and development and wind-tunnel testing area. Also in 2000, Tom began his own business restoring, creating custom fabricated parts, painting, plating and finishing, and performing mechanical maintenance on hot rods, Muscle Cars and exotic cars—specializing in vintage Ferraris. Today, Tom Farrell brings 31 years of experience in shaping metal, fiberglass, carbon fiber, custom welding, forming custom frame work, roll cages, exhausts and headers, mold-making for hard-to-find or custom parts and paint and body work to RKC every day—ensuring our creations and restorations are the finest available.

How far along is this project, photos yet!
