It's been awhile since I have made any progress on this, but I found some time to work on it this weekend. I got both quarters, roof, and tail panel off. Here are some pics.

I got some more done over the past several weeks. The passenger quarter is prepped and fitted, I used this stuff called rust bullet on all the metal surfaces, I started to cut out and fit the trunk floor, passenger drip rail is mounted, and the flanges for the roof are ready to go. It's starting to look like a car again

So far it has not been that difficult to line things up. Getting out all the spot welds and prepping the mating surfaces has been a real pain though.

Thanks!
Probably some mods; better rear-end, the original 4 speed is long gone so I will have decide what tranny (it came with a TH400), I'll beef up the suspension, convert to disk brakes, but I will keep the 400 motor, probably stroke it and get some aluminum heads on it.

I'm just waiting for the other quarter and roof to show up at Summit. I've got those areas prepped and ready to go as soon as they get in. Pics will follow soon after.
Quick question for you body guys: What do you use to fill in the area where the drip rails and roof meet? There was some sort of sealer/filler in there. I've been told mar-glass and filler. What about metal based filler?
Thanks for the input :lateral:  :woot:

Thanks, I'm determined to get this thing together. I'm in Reno and Hot August nights was this week, so I got to see a bunch of stuff to get me motivated. I got the rest of the sheetmetal for the body and started mocking it up. I'm having issues with the Goodmark driver's side quarter. It seems to be too high along the door side. I had to trim from the bottom to get it closer. Needs more massaging, though. I'll post up some pics soon.

Thanks, hopefully I can get some more work done on it soon. I had to take a break from it to work on my little brother's car.

Thanks for the compliments. I'll post up some progress pics this week. I finally got the driver quarter panel sitting right. When I first popped it on, it sat about 1/2" higher than the door. I ended up cutting at the bottom edge to get it lower. The passenger quarter went right on with no issues. I should have the roof fitted by this weekend. Then it's fenders and making sure all the gaps are good before I weld it together. :willy: :bunny:

Thanks,it's getting there. Here are some more pictures. I had a hard time getting the driver side quarter to line up, but I finally beat it into submission :unibrow: I'm trying to decide wheter I should weld everything up or mount the subframe and fenders before permanently attaching everything. Any thoughts?

Thanks, the subframe was completely gone through and has had everything replaced. It was installed in the car, then taken out (owner decided to slide an 86 Corvette under a 67 Camaro) . It basically had 0 miles on the whole deal, but the guy left it outside for awhile which is why it's a little rough. I'm pretty happy with it, I got the whole thing for about what I would have paid for just the brake kit

Your rear door line must line up to the rear quarters -- because the quarters don't move -- so if that lines up and you're happy... then go ahead and tack 'er up. The front fender line is adjustable and you may have to modify the door edge - or fender edge to get that perfect gap (depending on what you're happy with).... Once you have the rear quarters on - the trunk gap is even and perfect (to your liking) and the tailpan is in and you're happy with that... then it sounds like it's time to start sticking her together.
RE Drip rails: Cut 'em off while you have the chance. :wow: You live in Reno - and aren't going to drive it in the rain anyway! LOL

Thanks for the tips:thumbsup: I made sure to line up the doors before I cut off the old quarters and I am just about satisfied with the gaps. I'll make some final adjustments and weld it up after. I was going to cut off the drip rails but ended up buying new ones since the originals were rusted. I'm going to keep them since they are new and I am basically a beginner at this stuff.

Update:
Making a little progress. I decided to cut away the inner edge of the outer wheel houses so that I could cut and tuck the rear quarters in a bit (I did that before I set the quarters on). I'm hoping to stuff some 285's back there.
I started by laying down some thin masking tape to mark a straight line.
http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd290/jcrazy28/firebird/IMGP1058.jpg
Then I cut straight lines with my airsaw every inch or so.
http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd290/jcrazy28/firebird/IMGP1060.jpg
I was able to bend each section by hand and follow up with just a little hammering to get the edge to sit flat.
http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd290/jcrazy28/firebird/IMGP1062.jpg
I then spot welded.
http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd290/jcrazy28/firebird/IMGP1064.jpg
Cleaned up with some sanding discs and sprayed a light coat of Zero Rust.

Yea, they sure don't. I usually pick one thing to do on Friday night and do it; even if it's something small like setting a gap correctly, it gets me that much closer. I'm actually amazed with how much I was able to get done this past year just completing a small task each week.

Here's an update.
I mounted the subframe using Global West solid bushings, mounted the GW upper arms, painted the stock lowers. Upper and lower arms have poly bushings. I also mounted the stock rear-end for the time being so that I could get this to roller status. The brakes will be C5; I picked up a set of calipers for a good price, so I guess I'll be giving Kore3 a call for some brackets and hardware.

Yes, that's the stock subframe. I did not need to trim away the control arm mount and original holes because I'm using tubular arms. That way I can always go back if I need to.

I guess I'm long over due for an update. Progress has been slow, I sort of got sidetracked on another deal. The block is mostly together and painted. I'm just waiting on the manifold, it's at the machine shop. It needs some material removed to fit due to the block decking and head resurfacing. The heads got a little more work than I originally intended. In addition to resurfacing, the ports and chambers were cleaned up, new springs installed, and the vlave job was touched up.

Thanks  I'm hoping that I'll be in the 500hp range with the combo. I would really like to run it on a dyno to find out, but I'm not sure if anyone around here has one. I used the examples in the back of Jim Hand's book to help put it together. It's not exactly the same, but I picked one of the combos and went with it. The main difference is the cam, I went with a solid cam from PPR

Update: got my manifold back and installed. Now to get a look at that oil pan. I bought the one-piece gasket BOP engineering makes, but the pan looks like it needs a little persuasion and work on some of the holes to get it to fit right. Why can't anything just bolt on with no mods anymore?

I'm almost ready to mate the Pontiac Motor to the Viper T56, pics soon. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the hydraulic setup. I want to use the Viper CSC and the Camaro T56 master and lines. The problem is that the connection on the Viper CSC is slightly different and won't connect to the Camaro hydraulic line. I know that the fitting is removeable, but can't find a source other than buying a Camaro CSC and removing that fitting.
Does anyone know where I can get just the fitting? Or better yet, a used Camaro t56 CSC that I can buy cheap to remove the fitting?

Take your line --- and the fitting that is slightly different - to a hydraulic shop -- show them what you need and they'll make you one. It isn't that expensive and most will do it while you wait.
Some of the fittings are JIC.... don't ask me what that is - but they're basically AN- stuff but used in the hydraulic industry.

To answer your question, it's a 400 stroked to 461. I used a forged rotating assembly and 87cc Edelbrock heads with some mild porting. I also switched out the springs and running a Tomahawk solid cam @ about .525 lift

Sounds really nice. I had 400ci, stock iron heads with a good valve job and bowl work, a crane copy of the RAIV cam with the 1.65 ratio steel rockers (grooved rocker balls comes to mind), a set of off the shelf hooker headers, recurved HEI out of a 76 and a holley street dominator intake and recalibrated quadrajet. With a munncie, 4.33 and 255 gatorbacks it was an exciting ride.
Yours will be better in every way. I can't wait to see the finished project.

I've been working on the gap between the bumper and front-end. I know that from the factory, this gap was pretty large. I'm trying to get a uniform and closer gap here. Right now if you look from the top down, the gap is tighter towards the center of the hood and wider as it goes out to the fenders. Can anyone offer any tips or advice on getting this as close and as uniform as possible?
I've also been thinking of buying a new fiberglass bumper. My reasoning here is that it may be easier to work with and fit the fiberglass bumper. If I keep the metal bumper, I was planning on painting it body color anyway, so the fiberglass would work out in my plans. Any thoughts on this or experience with the fiberglass bumpers for this car? I found a company named UP22 that sells them. Anyone deal with them?
Thanks

I worked on it some more this past weekend and got it much closer. I had to tweak my bumper a little, basically just bent in the outsides a little. I don't think this is the original bumper because there are no holes in it for the pontiac emblem. From what I can tell, the 400 cars had this on the bumper. Also, who knows what happened to this bumper over the years.
Currently, the gaps are much more consistent. The only issue is that the gap is a little closer towards the middle (center of the hood) and gets slightly larger as it gets towards the fenders. I'm still trying to decide if I can live with it. I'll try and take some pictures this weekend.

Cool, thanks for the update. Yeah, the original 400 bumpers had two stamped (5/8" ??) holes on the middle for the emblem. Most people just drill out the non 400 bumpers to attach the emblem. I have an original 400 bumper if you need a template. I can make one for you- just let me know.

Sorry for the delay on these, been busy with a new job. Here are the pics after I messed around with the gaps. It's not perfect, but it is much better than it was. The sides use some sort of urethane filler pieces that cover that gap. Ames has them listed in their catalog. I also picked up some doug's headers since Classic was having a sale. Reading through several posts spread over a few forums led me to using a 98-02 F-body Clutch Slave to actuate the Viper part in my transmission that in turn engages the Mcleod clutch. I took it apart and cut the stopper in half to get the extra throw. I also started on making my original clutch pedal engage it.

Long overdue for an update so here we go:
Fuel system: complete (used a Tanksinc pump setup, ROBBMC regulator, 3/8 stainless feed and return
AAW wire harness, installation underway
Pedals refurbished, modified to work with new clutch, and old butchery welds cleaned up
Lincoln Mark VIII fan installed
Bought an American Powertrain x-member that was supposed to fit.....of course it did not, so had to modify to make it work
Ordered a RideTEch 4 link and coil-overs, waiting on getting the wheels and then I'm going to attempt to narrow the Ford 9" I have in waiting.
I've also been continuing to work on the body and will be attempting an initial start of the motor real soon to get the cam broken in and make sure nothing leaks :excited:

Got the motor started for the first time. Found 2 issues:
1: I will need to rethink the fuel pump setup, maybe reposition or cut and weld in a small sump section for the bottom of it. With 4 gallons of gas, it started cutting out on me, so I put in another 5 gallons and it was good to go.
2: Little oil leak that I need to investigate. It looks like it's either the rear main or the oil pan. I'm kind of pissed about this because I used the high-dollar BOP seal and followed the instructions exactly (if that's the cause). The other possibility is the oil pan. It's the Canton pan and it was way off out of the box, so I had to massage it into shape. I thought about exchanging it after I got it, but at the time, my machine shop was using the same pan on a Pontiac and it fit exactly like mine did. It's like it got warped a little when they welded to bottom portion onto it.
Anyways, here's a video of it running. This is after I ran it for about 20 minutes at around 2000 rpm. It's idling at about 1000 in this video

Thanks! Still a lot of work to do before it sees the road. I'm going to be removing the front sheetmetal for paint. I wanted to make sure that everything is ok with the motor before I get to paint and re-assembly. Depending on where that little oil leak is, I may have to get the motor back out.

Nope, they're US Mag model U109. They cost a few bucks less than the Year One versions. I went with them because they had 18's and everything I read about the 17" year one's said no good with big brakes.

Thanks! I went with 18's and took a shot hoping that they will clear C5 brakes; I printed out the template and just need to check. The fronts are 18x8 with 4.5 backspace. The rears are 18x9 with 5.25 backspace. The rears fit with the stock rear end setup, but looks pretty close to the outer edge. A bunch of lowering might cause rubbing issues. I've already cut and rolled back the outer edge on the rear wheel housings so it should clear my setup. No tires yet, so I can't provide any feedback on that yet. My goal is at least a 275, maybe a 285.

Awesome info thanks! If you get a chance and could take some profile (i.e. rear shots) or even a bottom up straight shot or shot of a ruler across up that woudl be a huge help! I am running Boss wheels 9.5 in the rear, but they are very much on the edge with the 275's even rolled up so a bit of room but not too much room for more drop. That is with the stock bird rear wich I believe is about .5 inch or so wider than a Camaro rear from what I heard?
Thanks again!

I've heard the same, problem is that I have no idea if the rear I have is original or not. I'm building a 9" for it, so I'm using what's in there as a base for measuring and cutting the other rear end. I'm planning on going 1/4" shorter on each end of my 9".
I measured with a straight edge from the outer edges of the rear wheels and came up with 1.25" on the inside and .75 on the outside. Of course, there will be variances due to where you take the measurement on the inside and because I cut and rolled the outer lip. I'll take some pictures for you, but I'm not sure how much it will help.

A little measuring on the C5 brakes question, thought this might be useful for others looking at doing the same:
To Recap- the front wheels are 18x8 with 4.5 backspacing and 1mm offset
I printed out the C5/C6 template on the Kore 3 website and took some pictures today. The total distance across the inside of the wheel is 16 inches, so the 12.8" rotors and calipers should fit fine. The protrusion of the caliper looks really close, but I believe it will fit. I will know for sure once I get everything, but at least this gives an idea. The only concern I see is at the point where the caliper gets close to the hub. The template has something there, but it's not the caliper (PAB??). Here are the pics, hope it helps:

I completely forgot to take pictures, sorry. I removed the rear end this weekend so I can narrow the other setup. Will the stock size rear-end length help you any (to compare to yours)? I took a measurement to the outside of each axle flange, drum brakes and backing plates removed, and I am at 60 inches. With the 18x9 and 5.25 backspace, I would be on that edge if I had not rolled back the metal underneath. I'm actually going to see if I can cut the new rear end about 1/4" extra on each side to move the wheels in just a hair. Like I said in a previous post, with my 18x9, I had a little more room to the inside when compared to the outside. If there's any other measurements I can take for you, let me know.

Here's just a little update, rear end is out and set up next to the new 9:
67rstbkt
04-15-2013, 09:29 AM
Well, started on the narrowing process and I could use some advice here. This is the first time I've done this; I've measured a bunch of times and have the length where it needs to be. The main issues I ran into is that the new ends do not seem to line up that great with the axle tubes. They are off a little bit, almost like the housing tubes are a bit out of alignment.
As it sits right now, the new ends are lined up with the alignment slugs in the center chunk, so basically the rod going through the 4 slugs is straight while the new ends are tacked on slightly off. Is it ok to weld them on like this?
I assume the axles being centered to the carrier is the most important thing?
Thanks

I got the assembly mocked with the 4 link and tacked on the upper brackets. I'm planning on having a friend weld it solid for me tonight. I don't have the skill or correct setup to feel good about welding together such a critical component.
I went a little bit narrower than I needed on the rear end to try and center the tires in the wheelwell just a bit. I figured it's easier to adjust out just a little bit with wheel spacers to get them just perfect; at least I hope it is. More pics soon.

Update Time :G-Dub:
Finally got the rear end installed after figuring out all the measurements (with help from forum members, of course :thankyou: )
So here is what I have done:
Ford 9", narrowed it myself, had a buddy do final welding
Ridetech 4 link installed, I used nuts and bolts instead of the cheesy self tappers for the majority of the connections. A piece of wire welded to the nut worked out great to get the nuts in place inside the frame rails.
98-02 F-body rear brakes installed; figured out a 2.5" offset works well for them. I should have used the flush mount GM ends from Moser instead of the standard ones, but removing .105 from the rear of the backing plates solved that issue.
On to the pics:

Thanks!
I ordered the axle shafts from Quick Performance - extreme series axles, 31 spline
Did you mean flanges? To hold in the axles? If so, then the brake backing plates act as the retainer in this setup. I had to slide the backing plate on first, then the seal, followed by the bearing and bearing retainer.

I was able to break off the wire after I tightened down the nut. I did manage to get two pieces stuck in there though.

In the meantime - here's a pic I drew up of what I'm thinking of doing when this new shop is up. I've been checking out those portable scissor lifts and want to recess it into the floor. I lose a little access under the car (mainly transmission stuff) with this style, but I can get it completely hidden and the height works out well for a 9 foot ceiling.

This one costs less than any 4 post that I've seen. I looked at different brands, but I suspect that the same manufacturer in China makes all the ones I was looking at.....so, I got this one from harbor freight. Cost is about $1500, but you can use the 20% or more coupons. I had a 25% off one day only coupon that I used. Add in Freight to the terminal and it came in under $1200 tax and all.
There are obviously some drawbacks to this style of lift compared to a 2 post or 4 post, but I don't have much room and both of those take up too much of it. If I had built a 30X24, I would have looked into a 2 post designed to handle more weight and for transmission access. Still, I would rather have this than nothing at all. This will make working on my projects so much easier.
